The de Sitter group and its representations: a window on the notion of de Sitterian elementary systems

We review the construction of ("free") elementary systems in de Sitter (dS) spacetime, in the Wigner sense, as associated with unitary irreducible representations (UIR's) of the dS (relativity) group. This study emphasizes the conceptual issues arising in the formulation of such systems and discusses known results in a mathematically rigorous way. Particular attention is paid to: "smooth" transition from classical to quantum theory; physical content under vanishing curvature, from the point of view of a local ("tangent") Minkowskian observer; and thermal interpretation (on the quantum level), in the sense of the Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We review three decompositions of the dS group physically relevant for the description of dS spacetime and classical phase spaces of elementary systems living on it. We review the construction of (projective) dS UIR's issued from these group decompositions. (Projective) Hilbert spaces carrying the UIR's (in some restricted sense) identify quantum ("one-particle") states spaces of dS elementary systems. Adopting a well-established Fock procedure, based on the Wightman-Gärding axioms and on analyticity requirements in the complexified Riemannian manifold, we proceed with a consistent quantum field theory (QFT) formulation of elementary systems in dS spacetime. This dS QFT formulation closely parallels the corresponding Minkowskian one, while the usual spectral condition is replaced by a certain geometric Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition equivalent to a precise thermal manifestation of the associated "vacuum" states.

On the improved dynamics approach in loop quantum black holes

In this paper, we consider the Böhmer-Vandersloot (BV) model of loop quantum black holes obtained from the improved dynamics approach. We adopt the Saini-Singh gauge, in which it was found analytically that the BV spacetime is geodesically complete. We show that black/white hole horizons do not exist in this geodesically complete spacetime. Instead, there exists only an infinite number of transition surfaces, which always separate trapped regions from anti-trapped ones. Comments on the improved dynamics approach adopted in other models of loop quantum black holes are also given.

Cosmological Constant, Inflaton, and Dark Matter all Naturally Originated from Poincaré Gauge Gravity

We propose a cosmological model in the framework of Poincaré gauge gravity, in which cosmological constant, inflaton, and dark matter candidate all naturally originate. Cosmological constant originates in the process of breaking of the Poincaré symmetries down to the Lorentz symmetries. We select a gauge Lagrangian without any additional matter fields, which can be regarded as a minimum extension of general relativity with two more massive modes from the Lorentz connection. Numerical analysis shows that the scalar dominates a slow-rolling inflation and the pseudo-scalar behaves as a dark matter candidate.

A regular MOG black hole's impact on shadows and gravitational weak lensing in the presence of quintessence field

We investigate the impact of the modified gravity (MOG) field and the quintessence scalar field on horizon evolution, black hole (BH) shadow and the weak gravitational lensing around a static spherically symmetric BH. We first begin to write the BH metric associated with the MOG parameter and quintessence scalar field. We then determine the BH shadow and obtain numerical solutions for the photon sphere and shadow radius. We show that the MOG ($α$) and the quintessence ($c$) parameters have a significant impact on BH shadow and photon sphere. Based on the analysis, we further show that the combined effects of the MOG parameter and quintessential field can increase the values of BH shadow and photon sphere radii. We also obtain constraints on the BH parameters by applying the observational data of Sgr A$^{\star}$ and M87$^{\star}$. Finally, we consider the weak deflection angle of BH within the context of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) and show that the combined effects of the MOG and quintessence parameters do make the value of the deflection angle grow, referring to remarkable property being in well agreement with the physical meaning of both parameters that can maintain the strong gravitational field in the surrounding environment of BH.

Uniform Asymptotic Approximation Method with Pöschl-Teller Potential

In this paper, we study analytical approximate solutions of the second-order homogeneous differential equations with the existence of only two turning points (but without poles), by using the uniform asymptotic approximation (UAA) method. To be more concrete, we consider the Pöschl-Teller (PT) potential, for which analytical solutions are known. Depending on the values of the parameters involved in the PT potential, we find that the upper bounds of the errors of the approximate solutions in general are $\lesssim 0.15\% \sim 10\% $, to the first-order approximation of the UAA method. The approximations can be easily extended to high-order, with which the errors are expected to be much smaller. Such obtained analytical solutions can be used to study cosmological perturbations in the framework of quantum cosmology, as well as quasi-normal modes of black holes.

Asymptotic analysis of Einstein-Æther theory and its memory effects: the linearized case

This work analyzes the asymptotic behaviors of the asymptotically flat solutions of Einstein-æther theory in the linear case. The vacuum solutions for the tensor, vector, and scalar modes are first obtained, written as sums of various multipolar moments. The suitable coordinate transformations are then determined, and the so-called pseudo-Newman-Unti coordinate systems are constructed for all radiative modes. In these coordinates, it is easy to identify the asymptotic symmetries. It turns out that all three kinds of modes possess the familiar Bondi-Metzner-Sachs symmetries or the extensions as in general relativity. Moreover, there also exist the \emph{subleading} asymptotic symmetries parameterized by a time-independent vector field on a unit 2-sphere. The memory effects are also identified. The tensor gravitational wave also excites similar displacement, spin, and center-of-mass memories to those in general relativity. New memory effects due to the vector and scalar modes exist. The subleading asymptotic symmetry is related to the (leading) vector displacement memory effect, which can be viewed as a linear combination of the electric-type and magnetic-type memory effects. However, the scalar memory effect seems to have nothing to do with the asymptotic symmetries at least in the linearized theory.

On the parameters of the spherically symmetric parametrized Rezzolla-Zhidenko spacetime through solar system tests, orbit of S2 star about Sgr A$^\star$, and quasiperiodic oscillations

In this paper, we find the higher order expansion parameters $α$ and $λ$ of spherically symmetric parametrized Rezzolla--Zhidenko (PRZ) spacetime by using its functions of the radial coordinate. We subject the parameters of this spacetime to classical tests including weak gravitational field effects in Solar System, observations of the S2 star located in the star cluster close to the Sgr A$^{\star}$ and of the frequencies of selected microquasars. Based on this spherically symmetric spacetime we perform the analytic calculations for Solar System effects like perihelion shift, light deflection, and gravitational time delay so as to determine limits on the parameters by using observational data. We restrict our attention to the limits on the two higher order expansion parameters $α$ and $λ$ that survive at the horizon or near the horizon of spherically symmetric metrics. The properties of these two small parameters expansion in PRZ parametrization are discussed. We further apply the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulations to analyze and obtain the limits on the expansion parameters by using observations of phenomena of the S2 star. Finally, we consider the epicyclic motions and derive analytic expressions of the epicyclic frequencies. Applying these expressions to the quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) of selected microquasars allows us to set further limits on the parameters of the PRZ spacetime. Our results demonstrate that the higher order expansion parameters can be given in the range $α\, ,λ=(-0.09\, , 0.09)$ and of order $\sim 10^{-2}$ as a consequence of three various tests and observations.

Universal horizons and black hole spectroscopy in gravitational theories with broken Lorentz symmetry

The violation of Lorentz invariance (LI) in gravitational theories, which allows superluminal propagations, dramatically alters the causal structure of the spacetime and modifies the notion of black holes (BHs). Instead of metric horizons, now universal horizons (UHs) define the boundaries of BHs, within which a particle cannot escape to spatial infinities even with an infinitely large speed. Then, a natural question is how the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of a BH are modified, if one considers the UH as its causal boundary. In this paper, we study in detail this problem in Einstein-aether theory, a vector-tensor theory that violates LI but yet is self-consistent and satisfies all observations to date. Technically, this poses several challenges, including singularities of the perturbation equations across metric horizons and proper identifications of ingoing modes at UHs. After overcoming these difficulties, we show that the QNMs of the Schwarzschild BH, also a solution of Einstein-aether theory, consist of two parts, the metric and aether parts. The QNMs of the metric perturbations are quite similar to those obtained in general relativity and are consistent with current observations of gravitational waves. But the ones from aether perturbations are different, and our numerical studies indicate that they are even not stable. The latter is consistent with our previous studies, which showed that the stealth Schwarzschild BH suffers a Laplacian instability along the angular direction. The method and techniques developed in this paper can be applied to the studies of QNMs in other theories of gravity with broken LI.

Thermodynamics of Kerr-Sen-AdS black holes in the restricted phase space

We analyse the restricted phase space thermodynamics (RPST) of Kerr-Sen-AdS black holes with the central charge $C$ and its conjugate chemical potential $μ$ but exclude the familiar $PdV$ term in the first law of black hole thermodynamics. That gives rise to a new perspective on the thermodynamics of black holes. Using the scaling properties, we investigate the first law and the corresponding Euler formula. Such formalism has its beauty, to say, for example, the mass is considered to be a homogeneous function of the extensive variables in the first order. In contrast, the intensive variables are of zeroth order. Because of the complicated expressions of the metric, we numerically calculate the critical values of the thermodynamic quantities. We find the phase transition behaviour of the free energy and other thermodynamic conjugate variables that appear in the first law. The RPST of the Kerr-Sen-AdS black holes is like that of the Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m-AdS and the Kerr-AdS black holes. Such notions of the phase transition behaviour show that there should be some underlying universality in the RPST formalism.

Black hole scalarizations induced by parity violations

It is well-known that parity symmetry is broken in the weak interaction but conserved for Einstein's general relativity and Maxwell's electromagnetic theory. Nevertheless, parity symmetry could also be violated in the gravitational/electromagnetic sectors if a fundamental scalar field couples to the parity-violating gravitational/electromagnetic curvature terms. Such parity-violating terms, which flip signs under reversed spatial directions, can inevitably lead to a negative effective mass squared for the scalar field perturbations near nonspherically symmetric black holes and thus are expected to trigger tachyonic instability. As illustrative examples, we show that the scalar field coupled to gravitational/electromagnetic Chern-Simons terms near a Kerr-Newmann spacetime can develop tachyonic instabilities, leading to equilibrium scalar field configurations in certain parameter regions of black holes. This instability, which is an indication of the black hole scalarization process, can occur in a broad class of nonspherically symmetric black holes and parity-violating theories.

Periodic orbits and their gravitational wave radiations in a polymer black hole in loop quantum gravity

This article provides a detailed investigation into the motion of the surrounding particles around a polymer black hole in loop quantum gravity (LQG). Using effective potential, the critical bound orbits and innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) are analyzed. The study finds that the radii and angular momentum of the critical bound orbits decrease with an increase in the parameter $A_λ$ which labels the LQG effects, while the energy and angular momentum of the ISCO also decreases with an increase in $A_λ$. Based on these findings, we then explore the periodic orbits of the polymer black hole in LQG using rational numbers composed of three integers. Our results show that the rational numbers increase with the energy of particles and decrease with the increase of angular momentum based on a classification scheme. Moreover, compared to a Schwarzschild black hole, the periodic orbits in a polymer black hole in LQG consistently have lower energy, providing a potential method for distinguishing a polymer black hole in LQG from a Schwarzschild black hole. Finally, we also examine the gravitational wave radiations of the periodic orbits of a test object which orbits a supermassive polymer black hole in LQG, which generates intricate GW waveforms that can aid in exhibiting the gravitational structure of the system.

Odd-parity perturbations of the wormhole-like geometries and quasi-normal modes in Einstein-Æther theory

The Einstein-$Æ$ther theory has drawn a lot of attentions in recent years. As a representative case of gravitational theories that break the Lorentz symmetry, it plays an important role in testing the Lorentz-violating effects and shedding light on the attempts to construct quantum gravity. Since the first detection to the gravitational wave, the event GW150914, a brand new window has been opened to testing the theory of gravity with gravitational wave observations. At the same time, the study of gravitational waves itself also provides us a serendipity of accessing the nature of a theory. In this paper, we focus on the odd-parity gravitational perturbations to a background that describes a wormhole-like geometry under the Einstein-$Æ$ther theory. Taking advantage of this set of analytic background solutions, we are able to simplify the Lagrangian and construct a set of coupled single-parameter dependent master equations, from which we solve for the quasi-normal modes that carry the physical information of the emitted gravitational waves. Basically, the results reflect a consistency between Einstein-$Æ$ther theory and general relativity. More importantly, as long as the no-ghost condition and the latest observational constraints are concerned, we notice that the resultant quasi-normal mode solutions intimate a kind of dynamical instability. Thus, the solutions are ruled out based on their stability against small linear perturbations.

Power Spectra of Slow-Roll inflation in the consistent $D\to 4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

The slow-roll inflation which took place at extremely high energy regimes is in general believed to be sensitive to the high-order curvature corrections to the classical general relativity (GR). In this paper, we study the effects of the high-order curvature term, the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term, on the primordial scalar and tensor spectra of the slow-roll inflation in the consistent $D \to 4$ Einstein Gauss-Bonnet (4EGB) gravity. The GB term is incorporated into gravitational dynamics via the re-scaling of the GB coupling constant $α\to α/(D-4)$ in the limit $ D\to 4$. For our purpose, we calculate explicitly the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra with GB corrections accurate to the next-to-leading order in the slow-roll approximation in the slow-roll inflation by using the third-order uniform asymptotic approximation method. The corresponding spectral indices and their runnings of the spectral indices for both the scalar and tensor perturbations as well as the ratio between the scalar and tensor spectra are also calculated up to the next-to-leading order in the slow-roll expansions. These results represent the most accurate results obtained so far in the literature. In addition, by studying the theoretical predictions of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio with Planck 2018 constraint in a model with power-law potential, we show that the second-order corrections are important in future measurements.

Observational tests of quantum extension of Schwarzschild spacetime in loop quantum gravity with stars in the galactic center

In this paper, we use the publicly available observational data of 17 stellar stars orbiting Sgr A* to test the quantum extension of Schwarzschild spacetime in loop quantum gravity (LQG). For our purpose, we transform the geodesical evolution of a massive particle in the quantum-extended Schwarzschild black hole to the perturbed Kepler problem and calculate the effects of LQG on the pericentre advance of the stellar stars. With these effects, one is able to compare them with the publicly available astrometric and spectroscopic data of stellar stars in the galactic center. We perform Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulations to probe the possible LQG effects on the orbit of S-stars. No significant evidence of the quantum-extended Schwarzschild black hole from LQG is found. Among the posterior analyses of 17 S-stars, the result of S2 gives the strongest bound on the LQG parameter $A_λ$, which places an upper bound at 95\% confidence level on $A_λ$ to be $A_λ< 0.302$.

Gravitational wave constraints on spatial covariant gravities

The direct discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) from the coalescence of compact binary components by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration provides an unprecedented opportunity for exploring the underlying theory of gravity that drives the coalescence process in the strong and highly dynamical field regime of gravity. In this paper, we consider the observational effects of spatial covariant gravities on the propagation of GWs in the cosmological background and obtain the observational constraints on coupling coefficients in the action of spatial covariant gravities from GW observations. We first decompose the GWs into the left- and right-hand circular polarization modes and derive the effects of the spatial covariant gravities on the propagation equation of GWs. We find that these effects can be divided into three classes: 1) frequency-independent effects on GW speed and friction, 2) parity-violating amplitude and velocity birefringences, and 3) a Lorentz-violating damping rate and dispersion of GWs. With these effects, we calculate the corresponding modified waveform of GWs generated by the coalescence of compact binaries. By comparing these new effects with the publicly available posterior samples or results from various tests of gravities with LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA data in the literature, we derive the observational constraints on coupling coefficients of the spatial covariant gravities. These results represent the most comprehensive constraints on the spatial covariant gravities in the literature.

Gravitational wave constraints on non-birefringent dispersions of gravitational waves due to Lorentz violations with GWTC-3

The standard model extension (SME) is an effective field theory framework that can be used to study the possible violations of Lorentz symmetry in the gravitational interaction. In the SME's gauge invariant linearized gravity sector, the dispersion relation of GWs is modified, resulting in anisotropy, birefringence, and dispersion effects in the propagation of GWs. In this paper, we mainly focus on the non-birefringent and anisotropic dispersion relation in the propagation of GWs due to the violation of Lorentz symmetry. With the modified dispersion relation, we calculate the corresponding modified waveform of GWs generated by the coalescence of compact binaries. We consider the effects from the operators with the lowest mass dimension $d=6$ in the gauge invariant linearized gravity sector of the SME which are expected to have the dominant Lorentz-violating effect on the propagation of GWs. For this case, the Lorentz-violating effects are presented by 25 coefficients and we constrain them independently by the ``maximal-reach" approach. We use 90 high-confidence GW events in the GWTC-3 catalog and use {\tt Bilby}, an open source software, and {\tt Dynest}, a nested sampling package, to perform parameter estimation with the modified waveform. We do not find any evidence of Lorentz violation in the GWs data and give a $90\%$ confidence interval for each Lorentz violating coefficient.

Magnetic-induced Spontaneous Scalarization in Dynamcial Chern-Simons Gravity

In the framework of the dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, we study the scalar field perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström-Melvin spacetime, which describes a charged black hole permeated by a uniform magnetic field. In the presence of the magnetic field, the scalar field acquires an effective mass whose square takes negative value in the half domain of the angular direction. This inevitably introduces the tachyonic instability and associated spontaneous scalarization as long as the coupling constant between the scalar field and the Chern-Simons invariant exceeds a threshold value. We study the object pictures of the time evolutions of the scalar field perturbations at the linear level, and find that the presence of the magnetic field will dramatically change the waveforms and associated ringdown modes. Nonlinear evolutions for the unstable perturbations are also performed in the decoupling limit, which demonstrate the scalar cloud as the final fate. Influences of the coupling constant and the black hole charge on the wave dynamics are also studied.
