Loop quantum cosmology: relation between theory and observations

This chapter provides a review of the frameworks developed for cosmological perturbation theory in loop quantum cosmology, and applications to various models of the early universe including inflation, ekpyrosis and the matter bounce, with an emphasis on potential observational consequences. It also includes a discussion on extensions to include non-Gaussianities and background anisotropies, as well as on its limitations concerning trans-Planckian perturbations and quantization ambiguities. It concludes with a summary of recent work studying the relation between loop quantum cosmology and full loop quantum gravity.

Polarized primordial gravitational waves in spatial covariant gravities

The spatial covariant gravities provide a natural way to including odd-order spatial derivative terms into the gravitational action, which breaks the parity symmetry at gravitational sector. A lot of parity-violating scalar-tensor theories can be mapped to the spatial covariant framework by imposing the unitary gauge. This provides us with a general framework for exploring the parity-violating effects in primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the polarization of PGWs in the spatial covariant gravities and their possible observational effects. To this end, we first construct the approximate analytical solution to the mode function of the PGWs during the slow-roll inflation by using the uniform asymptotic approximation. With the approximate solution, we calculate explicitly the power spectrum and the corresponding circular polarization of the PGWs analytically. It is shown that the new contributions to power spectrum from spatial covariant gravities contain two parts, one from the parity-preserving terms and the other from the parity-violating terms. While the parity-preserving terms can only affect the overall amplitudes of PGWs, the parity-violating terms induce nonzero circular polarization of PGWs, i.e., the left-hand and right-hand polarization modes of GWs have different amplitudes. The observational implications of this nonzero circular polarization is also briefly discussed.

Understanding quantum black holes from quantum reduced loop gravity

We systematically study the top-down model of loop quantum black holes (LQBHs), recently derived by Alesci, Bahrami and Pranzetti (ABP). To understand the structure of the model, we first derive several well-known LQBH solutions by taking proper limits. These include the Böhmer-Vandersloot and Ashtekar-Olmedo-Singh models, which were all obtained by the so-called bottom-up polymerizations within the framework of the minisuperspace quantizations. Then, we study the ABP model, and find that the inverse volume corrections become important only when the radius of the two-sphere is of the Planck size. For macroscopic black holes, the minimal radius obtained at the transition surface is always much larger than the Planck scale, and hence these corrections are always sub-leading. The transition surface divides the whole spacetime into two regions, and in one of them the spacetime is asymptotically Schwarzschild-like, while in the other region, the asymptotical behavior sensitively depends on the ratio of two spin numbers involved in the model, and can be divided into three different classes. In one class, the spacetime in the 2-planes orthogonal to the two spheres is asymptotically flat, and in the second one it is not even conformally flat, while in the third one it can be asymptotically conformally flat by properly choosing the free parameters of the model. In the latter, it is asymptotically de Sitter. However, in any of these three classes, sharply in contrast to the models obtained by the bottom-up approach, the spacetime is already geodesically complete, and no additional extensions are needed in both sides of the transition surface. In particular, identical multiple black hole and white hole structures do not exist.

Two 3-Branes in Randall-Sundrum Setup and Current Acceleration of the Universe

Five-dimensional spacetimes of two orbifold 3-branes are studied, by assuming that {\em the two 3-branes are spatially homogeneous, isotropic, and independent of time}, following the so-called "bulk-based" approach. The most general form of the metric is obtained, and the corresponding field equations are divided into three groups, one is valid on each of the two 3-branes, and the third is valid in the bulk. The Einstein tensor on the 3-branes is expressed in terms of the discontinuities of the first-order derivatives of the metric coefficients. Thus, once the metric is known in the bulk, the distribution of the Einstein tensor on the two 3-branes is uniquely determined. As applications, we consider two different cases, one is in which the bulk is locally $AdS_{5}$, and the other is where it is vacuum. In some cases, it is shown that the universe is first decelerating and then accelerating. The global structure of the bulk as well as the 3-branes is also studied, and found that in some cases the solutions may represent the collision of two orbifold 3-branes. The applications of the formulas to the studies of the cyclic universe and the cosmological constant problem are also pointed out.

Dirac observables in the 4-dimensional phase space of Ashtekar's variables and spherically symmetric loop quantum black holes

In this paper, we study a proposal put forward recently by Bodendorfer, Mele and Münch and Garc\'ıa-Quismondo and Marugán, in which the two polymerization parameters of spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes are the Dirac observables of the four-dimensional Ashtekar's variables. In this model, black and white hole horizons in general exist and naturally divide the spacetime into the external and internal regions. In the external region, the spacetime can be made asymptotically flat by properly choosing the dependence of the two polymerization parameters on the Ashtekar variables. Then, we find that the asymptotical behavior of the spacetime is universal, and, to the leading order, the curvature invariants are independent of the mass parameter $m$. For example, the Kretschmann scalar approaches zero as $K \simeq A_0r^{-4}$ asymptotically, where $A_0$ is generally a non-zero constant and independent of $m$, and $r$ the geometric radius of the two-spheres. In the internal region, all the physical quantities are finite, and the Schwarzschild black hole singularity is replaced by a transition surface whose radius is always finite and non-zero. The quantum gravitational effects are negligible near the black hole horizon for very massive black holes. However, the behavior of the spacetime across the transition surface is significantly different from all loop quantum black holes studied so far. In particular, the location of the maximum amplitude of the curvature scalars is displaced from the transition surface and depends on $m$, so does the maximum amplitude. In addition, the radius of the white hole is much smaller than that of the black hole, and its exact value sensitively depends on $m$, too.

Gauge Invariant Perturbations of General Spherically Symmetric Spacetimes

In this paper, the gauge choices in general spherically symmetric spacetimes have been explored. We construct the gauge invariant variables and the master equations for both the Detweiler easy gauge and the Regge-Wheeler gauge, respectively. The particular cases for $l=0,1$ are also been investigated. Our results provide analytical calculations of metric perturbation in general spherically symmetric spacetimes, which can be applied to various cases, including the Effective-One-Body problem. A simple example is presented to show how the metric perturbation components are related to the source perturbation terms.

Constraining a modified gravity theory in strong gravitational lensing and black hole shadow observations

We study the strong gravitational lensing effect around rotating black holes in different gravity theories. By calculating the deflection angle of strong gravitational lensing, we evaluate the lensing observables including the image position, separation, magnification and the time delays between the relativistic images of different rotating black holes. We argue that the differences in image positions, separations between the rotating black hole in modified gravity (MOG) theory and the Kerr black hole in general relativity (GR) are more significant in SgrA* than those in M87*, however the differences in time delays between rotating black holes in MOG and GR are shorter in SgrA* than that in M87*. Our evaluations on lensing observables in the strong gravity regime can help to distinguish the MOG from GR. Furthermore, we investigate the shadow observables of different rotating black holes. Employing the EHT observations on the angular shadow radius for supermassive M87* and SgrA* black holes respectively, we estimate the ranges of MOG parameter and obtain its upper limit constraint $0.350\lesssimα_{\rm up}\lesssim 0.485$ and $0.162 \lesssim α_{\rm up} \lesssim 0.285$ correspondingly, relating to black hole spins. This is the first constraint on the MOG parameter for rotating supermassive black holes from EHT observations on the angular shadow radius. Our constraint on the MOG parameter is much tighter compared with the result obtained from the orbital precession of the S2 star.

Constraints on self-dual black hole in loop quantum gravity with S0-2 star in the Galactic Center

One of remarkable features of loop quantum gravity (LQG) is that it can provide resolutions to both the black hole and big bang singularities. In the mini-superspace approach based on the polymerization procedure in LQG, a quantum corrected black hole metric is constructed. This metric is also known as self-dual spacetime since the form of the metric is invariant under the exchange $r \to a_0/r$ with $a_0$ being proportional to the minimum area in LQG and $r$ is the standard radial coordinate at asymptotic infinity. It modifies the Schwarzschild spacetime by the polymeric function $P$, purely due to the geometric quantum effects from LQG. Here $P$ is related to the polymeric parameter $δ$ which is introduced to define the paths one integrates the connection along to define the holonomies in the quantum corrected Hamiltonian constraint in the polymerization procedure in LQG. In this paper, we consider its effects on the orbital signatures of S0-2 star orbiting Sgr A* in the central region of our Milky Way, and compare it with the publicly available astrometric and spectroscopic data, including the astrometric positions, the radial velocities, and the orbital precession for the S0-2 star. We perform Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) simulations to probe the possible LQG effects on the orbit of S0-2 star. No significant evidence of the self-dual spacetime arisIng from LQG is found. We thus place an upper bounds at 95\% confidence level on the polymeric function $P < 0.043$ and $P < 0.056$, for Gaussian and uniform priors on orbital parameters, respectively.

Imprints of dark matter on gravitational ringing of supermassive black holes

Gravitational waves emitted from the gravitational ringing of supermassive black holes are important targets to test general relativity and probe the matter environment surrounding such black holes. The main components of the ringing waveform are black hole quasi-normal modes. In this paper, we study the effects of the dark matter halos with three different density profiles on the gravitational polar (even-parity) perturbations of a supermassive black hole. For this purpose, we first consider modified Schwarzschild spacetime with three different dark matter profiles and derive the equation of motion of the polar perturbations of the supermassive black hole. It is shown that by ignoring the dark matter perturbations, a Zerilli-like master equation with a modified potential for the polar perturbation can be obtained explicitly. Then we calculate the complex frequencies of the quasi-normal modes of the supermassive black hole in the dark matter halos. The corresponding gravitational wave spectra with the effects of the dark matter halos and their detectability have also been discussed.

Properties of the spherically symmetric polymer black holes

In this paper we systematically study a five-parameters class of spherically symmetric polymer black/white hole solutions, and find that only three independent combinations are physical and uniquely determine the spacetime properties. After exploring the whole 3-dimensional (3D) phase space, we find that the model has very rich physics, and depending on the choice of these parameters, various possibilities exist, including: (i) spacetimes that have the standard black/white hole structures, that is, spacetimes that are free of spacetime curvature singularities and possess two asymptotically flat regions, which are connected by a transition surface (throat) with a finite and non-zero geometric radius. The black/white hole masses measured by observers in the two asymptotically flat regions are all positive, and the surface gravity of the black (white) hole is positive (negative). (ii) Spacetimes that have wormhole-like structures, in which the two masses are all positive, but no horizons exist.(iii) Spacetimes that still possess curvature singularities, which can be either hidden inside trapped regions or naked. However, such spacetimes correspond to only some limit cases, and the necessary (but not sufficient) condition is that at least one of the two "polymerization" parameters vanishes. In addition, even for solar mass black/white holes, quantum gravitational effects can be still very large at the black/white hole horizons, again depending on the choice of the parameters.

Quasiperiodic Oscillations, Quasinormal Modes and Shadows of Bardeen-Kiselev Black Holes

In this article, we study the particle dynamics around a static and spherically symmetric Bardeen-Kiselev black hole (BK BH) which is a solution of the Einstein-non-linear Maxwell field equations along with a quintessential field. We discuss its essential geometrical properties such as scalar invariants and size of innermost stable circular orbits. Dynamics of test particles around the BH is also studied. Moreover, we also computed the fundamental frequencies of a test particle orbiting the BH in a slightly perturbed orbit. Further, the degeneracy relations between the spin of rotating Kerr BH and magnetic charge of the BK BH at the values of the quintessential parameter $ω_q=-1/3$ and in terms of the same values of innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) radius, energy efficiency, twin-peaks quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) frequencies and impact parameter for photon are also discussed in detail. Finally, we have investigated the relationship between the shadow radius and the real part of the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequency.

Gravitational wave constraints on Lorentz and parity violations in gravity: high-order spatial derivative cases

High-order spatial derivatives are of crucial importance for constructing the low energy effective action of a Lorentz or parity violating theory of quantum gravity. One example is the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, in one has to consider at least the sixth-order spatial derivatives in the gravitational action, in order to make the theory power-counting renormalizable. In this paper, we consider the Lorentz and parity violating effects on the propagation of GWs due to the fifth and sixth-order spatial derivatives respectively. For this purpose we calculate the corresponding Lorentz and parity violating waveforms of GWs produced by the coalescence of compact binaries. By using these modified waveforms, we perform the full Bayesian inference with the help of the open source software \texttt{Bilby} on the selected GW events of binary black hole (BBH) and binary neutron stars (BNS) merges in the LIGO-Virgo catalogs GWTC-1 and GWTC-2. Overall we do not find any significant evidence of Lorentz and parity violation due to the fifth and sixth-order spatial derivatives and thus place lower bounds on the energy scales $M_{\rm LV} > 2.4 \times 10^{-16} \; {\rm GeV}$ for Lorentz violation and $M_{\rm PV} > 1.0 \times 10^{-14} \; {\rm GeV}$ for parity violation at 90\% confidence level. Both constraints represent the first constraints on the fifth- and sixth-order spatial derivative terms respectively in the framework of spatial covariant gravity by using the observational data of GWs.

Gravitational axial perturbations of Schwarzschild-like black holes in dark matter halos

Gravitational waves emitted by distorted black holes, such as those arising from the coalescence of binary black holes, or a falling compact star into a supermassive black hole, carry not only information about the corresponding spacetime but also information about the environment surrounding the black holes. In this paper, we study the effects of the dark matter halos with three different density profiles on the gravitational axial perturbations of a Schwarzschild-like black hole. For this purpose, we first consider modified Schwarzschild black holes with three different dark matter profiles and derive the equation of motion of the axial perturbations of the modified Schwarzschild metric. It is shown that by ignoring the dark matter perturbations, a Regge-Wheeler-like master equation with a modified potential for the axial perturbation can be obtained explicitly. Then we calculate the complex frequencies of the quasi-normal modes of the Schwarzschild-like black hole in the dark matter halos by applying the sixth-order WKB method. The corresponding gravitational wave spectra with the effects of the dark matter halos have also been discussed.

Constraints on the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity with gravitational waves

The discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) from the compact binary components by LIGO/Virgo Collaboration provides an unprecedented opportunity for testing gravity in the strong and highly dynamical field regime of gravity. Currently a lot of model-independent tests have been performed by LIGO/Virgo Collaboration and no any significant derivation from general relativity has been found. In this paper, we study the parity violating effects on the propagation of GWs in the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity, a theory which modifies general relativity by a parity violating Nieh-Yan term. We calculate the corresponding parity violating waveform of GWs produced by the coalescence of compact binaries. By comparing the two circular polarization modes, we find the effects of the velocity birefringence of GWs in their propagation caused by the parity violation due to the Nieh-Yan term, which are explicitly presented in the GW waveforms by the phase modification. With such phase modifications to the waveform, we perform the full Bayesian inference with the help of the open source software {\texttt Bilby} on the GW events of binary black hole merges (BBH) in the LIGO-Virgo catalogs GWTC-1 and GWTC-2. We do not find any significant evidence of parity violation due to the parity violating Nieh-Yan term and thus place an upper bound on the energy scale $M_{\rm PV} < 6.5 \times 10^{-42} \; {\rm GeV}$ at 90\% confidence level, which represents the first constraint on the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity so far.

Extended geometry of Gambini-Olmedo-Pullin polymer black hole and its quasinormal spectrum

In this paper we systematically study a model of spherically symmetric polymer black holes recently proposed by Gambini, Olmedo, and Pullin (GOP). Within the framework of loop quantum gravity, the quantum parameters in the GOP model depend on the minimal area gap and the size of the discretization of the physical states. In this model, a spacelike transition surface takes place of the classical singularity. By means of coordinate transformations, we first extend the metric to the white hole region, and find that the geometric structure of the quantum black hole is similar to the wormhole structure, and the radius of the most quantum region is equal to the wormhole radius. In addition, we show that the energy conditions are violated not only at throat, but also at horizons and the spatial infinities. In order to show how the quantum effects affect the spacetimes, we calculate the Ricci and Kretschmann scalars at different places. It turns out that, as expected, the most quantum region is at the throat. Finally, we consider the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless scalar field perturbations, electromagnetic field perturbations, and axial gravitational perturbations. QNMs in the Eikonal limits are also considered. As anticipated, the spectrum of QNMs deviates from that of the classical case due to quantum effects. Interestingly, our results show that the quasinormal frequencies of the perturbations share the same qualitative tendency while setting quantum parameters with various values in this effective model, even if the potential deviations are different with different spins.

Rotations of the polarization of a gravitational wave propagating in Universe

In this paper, we study the polarization of a gravitational wave (GW) emitted by an astrophysical source at a cosmic distance propagating through the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walk universe. By considering the null geodesic deviations, we first provide a definition of the polarization of the GW in terms of the Weyl scalars with respect to a parallelly-transported frame along the null geodesics, and then show explicitly that, due to different effects of the expansion of the universe on the two polarization modes, the so-called "+" and "$\times$" modes, the polarization angle of the GW changes generically, when it is propagating through the curved background. By direct computations of the polarization angle, we show that different epochs, radiation-, matter- and $Λ$-dominated, have different effects on the polarization. In particular, for a GW emitted by a binary system, we find explicitly the relation between the change of the polarization angle $|Δφ|$ and the redshift $z_s$ of the source in different epochs. In the $Λ$CDM model, we find that the order of $|Δφ|{η_0 F}$ is typically $O(10^{-3})$ to $O(10^3)$, depending on the values of $z_s$, where $η_0$ is the (comoving) time of the current universe, and $F\equiv\Big(\frac{5}{256}\frac{1}{τ_{obs}}\Big)^{3/8}\left(G_NM_c\right)^{-5/8}$ with $τ_{obs}$ and $M_c$ being, respectively, the time to coalescence in the observer's frame and the chirp mass of the binary system.

Gravitational waves from the quasi-circular inspiral of compact binaries in Einstein-aether theory

We study gravitational waves emitted by a binary system of non-spinning bodies in a quasi-circular inspiral within the framework of Einstein-aether theory. In particular, we compute explicitly and analytically the expressions for the time-domain and frequency-domain waveforms, gravitational wave polarizations, and response functions for both ground- and space-based detectors in the post-Newtonian approximation. We find that, when going beyond leading-order in the post-Newtonian approximation, the non-Einsteinian polarization modes contain terms that depend on both the first and the second harmonics of the orbital phase. We also calculate analytically the corresponding parameterized post-Einsteinian parameters, generalizing the existing framework to allow for different propagation speeds among scalar, vector and tensor modes, without assumptions about the magnitude of its coupling parameters, and meanwhile allowing the binary system to have relative motions with respect to the aether field. Such results allow for the easy construction of Einstein-aether templates that could be used in Bayesian tests of General Relativity in the future.

Odd-parity stability of black holes in Einstein-Aether gravity

In Einstein-Aether theory, we study the stability of black holes against odd-parity perturbations on a spherically symmetric and static background. For odd-parity modes, there are two dynamical degrees of freedom arising from the tensor gravitational sector and Aether vector field. We derive general conditions under which neither ghosts nor Laplacian instabilities are present for these dynamical fields. We apply these results to concrete black hole solutions known in the literature and show that some of those solutions can be excluded by the violation of stability conditions. The exact Schwarzschild solution present for $c_{13} = c_{14} = 0$, where $c_i$'s are the four coupling constants of the theory with $c_{ij}=c_i + c_j$, is prone to Laplacian instabilities along the angular direction throughout the horizon exterior. However, we find that the odd-parity instability of high radial and angular momentum modes is absent for black hole solutions with $c_{13} = c_4 = 0$ and $c_1 \geq 0$.
