Dynamics of an optomechanical resonator containing a Quantum Well induced by periodic modulation of cavity field and external laser beam

We study in detail the dynamics of a non-stationary system composed of a Quantum Well confined in an optomechanical cavity. This system is investigated with classical and quantized motion of the cavity movable mirror. In both the cases, the cavity frequency is rapidly modulated in time. The resultant periodically modulated spectra is presented. In particular, we study the effect of two-photon process on the number of intracavity photons. The intensity of fluorescent light emitted by excitons in the quantum well is also examined for these non-stationary systems. It is observed that the initial stage of fluorescence spectrum helps in detecting the two-photon process. It is also noticed that under strong modulation, two-photon process dominates while under weak modulation, fluorescence dominates. We also analyzed the dynamics of the system induced by a periodic modulation of the external pump laser with constant cavity frequency. This modulation of external laser pump helps in phonon amplification.

Optomechanical effect on the Dicke quantum phase transition and quasi-particle damping in a Bose-Einstein Condensate: A new tool to measure weak force

We make a semi-classical steady state analysis of the influence of mirror motion on the quantum phase transition for an optomechanical Dicke model in the thermodynamic limit. An additional external mechanical pump is shown to modify the critical value of atom-photon coupling needed to observe the quantum phase transition. We further show how to choose the mechanical pump frequency and cavity-laser detuning to produce extremely cold condensates. The present system can be used as a quantum device to measure weak forces.

Dynamical Casimir Effect in Superradiant Light Scattering by Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Optomechanical Cavity

We investigate the effects of dynamical Casimir effect in superradiant light scattering by Bose-Einstein condensate in an optomechanical cavity. The system is studied using both classical and quantized mirror motions. The cavity frequency is harmonically modulated in time for both the cases. The main quantity of interest is the number of intracavity scattered photons. The system has been investigated under the weak and strong modulation. It has been observed that the amplitude of the scattered photons is more for the classical mirror motion than the quantized mirror motion. Also, initially, the amplitude of scattered photons is high for lower modulation amplitude than higher modulation amplitude. We also found that the behaviour of the plots are similar under strong and weak modulation for the quantized mirror motion.

Dicke-Hepp-Lieb Superradiant Phase Transition and Independent Modes Model in Quantum Optomechanics

We show that in the strong coupling linear regime, the dispersive opto-mechanical Hamiltonian system can undergo a Dicke-Hepp-Lieb superradiant phase transition with two critical points. The higher critical point is the usual second order Dicke superradiant phase transition while the lower critical point is a new effect showing similarity to the usual Dicke superradiance. We also show that the mechanical mode near its quantum ground state completely decouples from the optical mode and the optical mode shows similarity to the Bogoluibov like excitations.

Quantum dynamics of two-optical modes and a single mechanical mode optomechanical system: selective energy exchange

We study the quantum dynamics of an optomechanical setup comprising two optical modes and one mechanical mode. We show that the same system can undergo a Dicke-Hepp-Lieb superradiant type phase transition. We found that the coupling between the momentum quadratures of the two optical fields give rise to a new critical point. We show that selective energy exchange between any two modes is possible by coherent control of the coupling parameters. In addition we also demonstrate the occurrence of Normal Mode Splitting (NMS) in the mechanical displacement spectrum.

Achieving the Quantum Ground State of a Mechanical Oscillator using a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Back-Action and Cold Damping feedback schemes

We present a detailed study to show the possibility of approaching the quantum ground-state of a hybrid optomechanical quantum device formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined inside a high-finesse optical cavity with an oscillatory end mirror. Cooling is achieved using two experimentally realizable schemes: back-action cooling and cold damping quantum feedback cooling. In both the schemes, we found that increasing the two body atom-atom interaction brings the mechanical oscillator to its quantum ground state. It has been observed that back-action cooling is more effective in the good cavity limit while the cold damping cooling scheme is more relevant in the bad cavity limit. It is also shown that in the cold damping scheme, the device is more efficient in the presence of BEC than in the absence of BEC.

Detection of Weak Force using a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate the possibility of detecting a weak coherent force by means of a hybrid optomechanical quantum device formed by a Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) confined in a high quality factor optical cavity with an oscillatory end mirror. We show using the stochastic cooling technique that the atomic two-body interaction can be utilized to cool the mirror and achieve position squeezing essential for making sensitive measurements of weak forces. We further show that the atomic two-body interaction can also increase the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and decrease the noise of the off-resonant stationary spectral measurements.

Opto-mechanical effects in superradiant light scattering by Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity

We investigate the effects of a movable mirror (cantilever) of an optical cavity on the superradiant light scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical lattice. We show that the mirror motion has a dynamic dispersive effect on the cavity-pump detuning. Varying the intensity of the pump beam, one can switch between the pure superradiant regime and the Bragg scattering regime. The mechanical frequency of the mirror strongly influences the time interval between two Bragg peaks. We found that when the system is in the resolved side band regime for mirror cooling, the superradiant scattering is enhanced due to coherent energy transfer from the mechanical mirror mode to the cavity field mode.

Optomechanical coupling between two optical cavities: cooling of a micro-mirror and parametric normal mode splitting

We propose a technique aimed at cooling a harmonically oscillating mirror mechanically coupled to another vibrating mirror to its quantum mechanical ground state. Our method involves optmechanical coupling between two optical cavities. We show that the cooling can be controlled by the mechanical coupling strength between the two movable mirrors, the phase difference between the mechanical modes of the two oscillating mirrors and the photon number in each cavity. We also show that both mechanical and optical cooling can be achieved by transferring energy from one cavity to the other. We also analyze the occurrence of normal-mode splitting (NMS). We find that a hybridization of the two oscillating mirrors with the fluctuations of the two driving optical fields occurs and leads to a splitting of the mechanical and optical fluctuation spectra.

Theoretical Study of Oligophenyl-based Double Barrier Molecular Device

We report an investigation of electron conduction in oligophenyl based double barrier molecular device. We have carried out analytical calculations and numerical simulations on isolated molecules, consisting of aromatic "pi" conjugated system made up of three phenyl rings separated by insulator groups -CH_{2}-, -SiH_{2}-, -GeH_{2}- and -SnH_{2}-. We show analytically as well as numerically that when the two insulator groups are different an asymmetric electron transport in the presence of external electric field is possible, thus resembling a diode which allows one way electron transport.

Luttinger liquid in superlattice structures: atomic gases, quantum dots and the classical Ising chain

We study physical properties of a Luttinger liquid in a superlattice which is characterized by alternating two tunneling parameters. Employing the Bosonization approach, we describe the corresponding Hubbard model by the equivalent Tomonoga-Luttinger model. We analyze the spin-charge separation and transport property as the difference between the two tunneling parameter increases. We suggest that cold Fermi gases trapped in a bichromatic optical lattice and coupled quantum dots offer the opportunity to measure these effects in a convenient manner. We also study the classical Ising chain with two tunneling parameters. We found that the classical two-point correlator decreases as the difference between the two tunneling parameter increases.

Entangling two Bose Einstein condensates in a double cavity system

We propose a scheme to transfer the quantum state of light fields to the collective density excitations of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) in a cavity. This scheme allows to entangle two BECs in a double cavity setup by transferring the quantum entanglement of two light fields produced from a nondegenerate parametric amplifier (NOPA) to the collective density excitations of the two BECs. An EPR state of the collective density excitations can be created by a judicious choice of the system parameters.

Quantum noise reduction using a cavity with a Bose Einstein condensate

We study an optomechanical system in which the collective density excitations (Bogoliubov modes) of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) is coupled to a cavity field. We show that the optical force changes the frequency and the damping constant of the collective density excitations of the BEC. We further analyze the occurrence of normal mode splitting (NMS) due to mixing of the fluctuations of the cavity field and the fluctuations of the condensate with finite atomic two-body interaction. The NMS is found to vanish for small values of the two-body interaction. We further show that the density excitations of the condensate can be used to squeeze the output quantum fluctuations of the light beam. This system may serve as an optomechanical control of quantum fluctuations using a Bose Einstein condensate.

TheqQuantum acousto optic effect in Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the interaction between a single mode light field and an elongated cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), subject to a temporal modulation of the trap frequency in the tight confinement direction. Under appropriate conditions, the longitudinal sound like waves (Faraday waves) in the direction of weak confinement acts as a dynamic diffraction grating for the incident light field analogous to the acousto-optic effect in classical optics. The change in the refractive index due to the periodic modulation of the BEC density is responsible for the acousto-optic effect. The dynamics is characterised by Bragg scattering of light fom the matter wave Faraday grating and simultaneous Bragg scattering of the condensate atoms from the optical grating formed due to the interference between the incident light and the diffracted light fields. Varying the intensity of the incident laser beam we observe the transition from the acousto-optic effect regime to the atomic Bragg scattering regime, where Rabi oscillations between two momentum levels of the atoms are observed. We show that the acousto-optic effect is reduced as the atomic interaction is increased.

Dynamics of a movable micro-mirror in a nonlinear optical cavity

We consider the dynamics of a movable mirror (cantilever) of a nonlinear optical cavity. We show that a $χ^{(3)}$ medium with a strong Kerr nonlinearity placed inside a cavity inhibits the normal mode splitting (NMS) due to the photon blockade mechanism. This study demonstrates that NMS could be used as a tool to observe the photon blockade effect. We also found that the backaction cooling of the movable mirror is reduced in the presence of the Kerr medium.

Cavity Quantum Optomechanics of Ultracold Atoms in an Optical Lattice: Normal-Mode Splitting

We consider the dynamics of a movable mirror (cantilever) of a cavity coupled through radiation pressure to the light scattered from ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. Scattering from different atomic quantum states creates different quantum states of the scattered light, which can be distinguished by measurements of the displacement spectrum of the cantilever. We show that for large pump intensities the steady state displacement of the cantilever shows bistable behaviour. Due to atomic back-action, the displacement spectrum of the cantilever is modified and depends on the position of the condensate in the Brillouin zone. We further analyze the occurrence of splitting of the normal mode into three modes due to mixing of the mechanical motion with the fluctuations of the cavity field and the fluctuations of the condensate with finite atomic two-body interaction. The present system offers a novel scheme to coherently control ultracold atoms as well as cantilever dynamics.

Two-photon nonlinear spectroscopy of periodically trapped ultracold atoms in a cavity

We study the transmission spectra of a Bose Einstein condensate confined in an optical lattice interacting with two modes of a cavity via nonlinear two-photon transition. In particular we show that a nonlinear two-photon interaction between the superfluid (SF) phase and the Mott insulating (MI) phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and the cavity field show qualitatively different transmission spectra compared to the one-photon interaction. We found that when the BEC is in the Mott state, the usual normal mode splitting present in the one-photon transition is missing in the two-photon interaction. When the BEC is in the superfluid state, the transmission spectra shows the usual multiple lorentzian structure. However the separation between the lorentzians for the two-photon case is much larger than that for the one-photon case. This study could form the basis for non-destructive high resolution Rydberg spectroscopy of ultracold atoms or two-photon spectroscopy of a gas of ultracold atomic hydrogen.
