Bogoliubov spectrum of a cigar shaped Fermi superfluid in an optical lattice at the BEC-BCS crossover

We study the Bogoliubov spectrum of an elongated Fermi superfluid confined in an one-dimensional superfluid along the Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC)-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) crossover. We derive analytic expressions for the sound velocity, effective mass and the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of the axial quasiparticles long the crossover based on the hydrodynamic theory. Our investigation reveal interesting signatures of BEC-BCS crossover in an optical lattice which deserve experimental investigation.

Transport behaviour of a Bose Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

The Bloch and dipole oscillations of a Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical superlattice is investigated. We show that the effective mass increases in an optical superlattice, which leads to localization of the BEC, in accordance with recent experimental observations [16]. In addition, we find that the secondary optical lattice is a useful additional tool to manipulate the dynamics of the atoms.

Coherence Properties of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Optical Superlattice

We study the effect of a one dimensional optical superlattice on the superfluid fraction, number squeezing, dynamic structure factor and the quasi-momentum distribution of the Mott-insulator. We show that due to the secondary lattice, there is a decrease in the superfluid fraction and the number fluctuation. The dynamic structure factor which can be measured by Bragg spectroscopy is also suppressed due to the addition of the secondary lattice. The visibility of the interference pattern (the quasi-momentum distribution)of the Mott-insulator is found to decrease due to the presence of the secondary lattice. Our results have important implications in atom interferometry and quantum computation in optical lattices.

Superfluid Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a One Dimensional Optical Super-Lattice

We derive and study the Bloch and Bogoliubov spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a one-dimensional optical superlattice (created by interference between a primary optical lattice and a secondary optical lattice of small strength), using the Bogoliubov approximation and the hydrodynamic theory with mode coupling. We show that a BEC in an optical superlattice experiences two different tunneling parameters and hence behaves like a chain of diatomic lattice. We derive expressions for the tunneling parameters as a function of the strength of the primary and secondary lattice. This gives rise to a gapped branch in addition to the gapless acoustical branch in the Bogoliubov spectrum. The spectrum strongly depends on the strength of the secondary lattice, the interaction parameter and the number density of atoms. The effective mass is found to increase as the depth of the secondary optical lattice increases, a property that was utilized in ref. [20] to achieve the Tonks-Girardeau regime. The coupling between the inhomogeneous density in the radial plane and the density modulation along the optical lattice gives rise to multibranch Bogoliubov spectrum.

Josephson Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Accelerated Double Well Potential

Motivated by recent experiment on Bloch Oscillation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in accelerated optical lattices, we consider the Josephson dynamics of a BEC in an accelerated double well potential. We show that acceleration suppresses coherent population oscillation between the two wells. Accelerating the double well renders the Josephson coupling energy time dependent and this emerges as a source of dissipation. This dissipative mechanism helps to stabilize the system. The results are used to interpret recent experimental results[reference 16].

Dynamics of Coupled Topological - Collective Modes of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We develop the theory of the resonant formation of coupled topological-collective coherent modes in the presence of a quantized trap and classical external field. The coupling between the topological and the collective modes can be linear as well as non-linear depending upon the tuning of the external extremely low frequency electromagnetic field. This tuning depends on the trap frequency and the energy level separation between the ground and the first excited topological coherent mode modified by the two body atomic collisions.

Stability of Bloch Oscillations in two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate analytically, the stability of Bloch waves at the boundary of the first Brillouin zone in two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates confined in an optical lattice. Contrary to the single component case, we find here two critical density regimes which determine the stability of the Bloch waves. Breakdown of Bloch oscillations appear when n1/n2 Nc2, here Nc1 and Nc2 are some critical values of n1/n2. There is an intermediate regime between Nc1 and Nc2 where the Bloch oscillations are stable and the condensates behave like single particles.

Quantum Theory of a Bose-Einstein Condensate out of Equilibrium

We consider the interaction between a single-mode quantized perturbing external field and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) out of equilibrium. The usual Rabi type oscillations between the ground and the excited state of the coherent topological modes are observed with a Rabi frequency modified by the two-body atomic interactions. Taking into account the granular structure of the external perturbing field reveals the well know phenomena of collapse and revival of the Rabi oscillations. In particular we find that atomic interactions reduce the Rabi frequency and also affect the collapse and revival sequence.

Vortex flux and Berry phase in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a toroidal trap

We study a system of large number of singly quantized vortices in a BEC confined in a rotating toroidal geometry. Analogous to the Meissner effect in supercomputers, we show that the external rotational field can be tuned to can cancel the Magnus field, resulting in a zero vortex flux. We also show that the Berry's phase for this system is directly related to the vortex flux.

Stability of small amplitude normal modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a singly quantized vortex confined in an optical lattice

We study the dynamics of a BEC with a singly quantized vortex, placed in the combined potential of a 1-D (2-D) optical lattice and an axi-symmetric harmonic trap. A time-dependent variational Lagrangian analysis shows that an optical lattice helps to stabilize the vortex which in absence of the optical lattice is unstable. We find that the normal modes are stable only if the depth of the optical potential is more than a certain critical value. This critical value of the optical potential depends on the interaction parameter. In general higher the interaction parameter, lower the value of the optical potential required to stabilize the vortex. The BEC with the singly quantized vortex is found to be relatively more unstable in a 2-D optical lattice compared to a 1-D optical lattice.
