Earthquake-like dynamics in ultrathin magnetic film

We study the motion of a domain wall on an ultrathin magnetic film using the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). At tiny magnetic fields, the wall creeps only via thermal activation over the pinning centers present in the sample. Our results show that this creep dynamics is highly intermittent and correlated. A localized instability triggers a cascade, akin to aftershocks following a large earthquake, where the pinned wall undergoes large reorganizations in a compact active region for a few seconds. Surprisingly, the size and shape of these reorganizations display the same scale-free statistics of the depinning avalanches in agreement with the quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.

Measuring interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin magnetic films

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), being one of the origins of chiral magnetism, is currently attracting considerable attention in the research community focusing on applied magnetism and spintronics. For future applications, an accurate measurement of its strength is indispensable. Here we present a review of the state-of-the-art of measuring the coefficient of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the DMI constant $D$, focusing on systems where the interaction arises from the interface between two materials (i.e. interfacial DMI). We give an overview of the experimental techniques as well as their theoretical background and models for the quantification of the DMI constant. The measurement techniques are divided into three categories: a) domain wall-based measurements, b) spin wave-based measurements and c) spin-orbit torque-based measurements. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each method and compare $D$ values at different interfaces. The review aims to obtain a better understanding of the applicability of the different techniques to various stacks and of the origin of apparent disagreements among literature values.

Bloch-to-Néel domain wall transition evinced through morphology of magnetic bubble expansion in Ta/CoFeB/MgO layers

Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are often characterised by vanishing or modest values of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which results in purely Bloch or mixed Bloch-Néel domain walls (DWs). Here we investigate the creep evolution of the overall magnetic bubble morphology in these systems under the combined presence of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields and we show that He$^+$ ion irradiation induces a transition of the internal DW structure towards a fully Néel spin texture. This transition can be correlated to a simultaneous increase in DMI strength and reduction in saturation magnetisation -- which are a direct consequence of the effects of ion irradiation on the bottom and top CoFeB interfaces, respectively. The threshold irradiation dose above which DWs acquire a pure Néel character is experimentally found to be between 12 $\times$ 10$^{18}$ He$^+$/m$^2$ and 16 $\times$ 10$^{18}$ He$^+$/m$^2$, matching estimations from the one dimensional DW model based on material parameters. Our results indicate that evaluating the global bubble shape during its expansion can be an effective tool to sense the internal bubble DW structure. Furthermore, we show that ion irradiation can be used to achieve post-growth engineering of a desired DW spin texture.

Individual skyrmion manipulation by local magnetic field gradients

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures, stabilised in systems with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Several studies have shown that electrical currents can move skyrmions efficiently through spin-orbit torques. While promising for technological applications, current-driven skyrmion motion is intrinsically collective and accompanied by undesired heating effects. Here we demonstrate a new approach to control individual skyrmion positions precisely, which relies on the magnetic interaction between sample and a magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probe. We investigate perpendicularly magnetised X/CoFeB/MgO multilayers, where for X = W or Pt the DMI is sufficiently strong to allow for skyrmion nucleation in an applied field. We show that these skyrmions can be manipulated individually through the local field gradient generated by the scanning MFM probe with an unprecedented level of accuracy. Furthermore, we show that the probe stray field can assist skyrmion nucleation. Our proof-of-concepts results offer current-free paradigms to efficient individual skyrmion control.

Dynamics and morphology of chiral magnetic bubbles in perpendicularly magnetized ultra-thin films

We study bubble domain wall dynamics using micromagnetic simulations in perpendicularly magnetized ultra-thin films with disorder and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Disorder is incorporated into the material as grains with randomly distributed sizes and varying exchange constant at the edges. As expected, magnetic bubbles expand asymmetrically along the axis of the in-plane field under the simultaneous application of out-of-plane and in-plane fields. Remarkably, the shape of the bubble has a ripple-like part which causes a kink-like (steep decrease) feature in the velocity versus in-plane field curve. We show that these ripples originate due to the nucleation and interaction of vertical Bloch lines. Furthermore, we show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction field is not constant but rather depends on the in-plane field. We also extend the collective coordinate model for domain wall motion to a magnetic bubble and compare it with the results of micromagnetic simulations.

Influence of magnetic field and ferromagnetic film thickness on domain pattern transfer in multiferroic heterostructures

Domains in BaTiO$_3$ induces a regular modulation of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in CoFeB via an inverse magnetostriction effect. As a result, the domain structures of the CoFeB wedge film and BaTiO$_3$ substrate correlate fully and straight ferroelectric domain boundaries in BaTiO$_3$ pin magnetic domain walls in CoFeB. We use x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy to characterize the spin structure of the pinned domain walls. In a rotating magnetic field, abrupt and reversible transitions between two domain wall types occur, namely, narrow walls where the magnetization vectors align head-to-tail and much broader walls with alternating head-to-head and tail-to-tail magnetization configurations. We characterize variations of the domain wall spin structure as a function of magnetic field strength and CoFeB film thickness and compare the experimental results with micromagnetic simulations.

Electric-field-driven domain wall dynamics in perpendicularly magnetized multilayers

We report on reversible electric-field-driven magnetic domain wall motion in a Cu/Ni multilayer on a ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ substrate. In our heterostructure, strain-coupling to ferroelastic domains with in-plane and perpendicular polarization in the BaTiO$_3$ substrate causes the formation of domains with perpendicular and in-plane magnetic anisotropy, respectively, in the Cu/Ni multilayer. Walls that separate magnetic domains are elastically pinned onto ferroelectric domain walls. Using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, we demonstrate that out-of-plane electric field pulses across the BaTiO$_3$ substrate move the magnetic and ferroelectric domain walls in unison. Our experiments indicate an exponential increase of domain wall velocity with electric field strength and opposite domain wall motion for positive and negative field pulses. Magnetic fields do not affect the velocity of magnetic domain walls, but independently tailor their internal spin structure, causing a change in domain wall dynamics at high velocities.

Influence of elastically pinned magnetic domain walls on magnetization reversal in multiferroic heterostructures

In elastically coupled multiferroic heterostructures that exhibit full domain correlations between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic sub-systems, magnetic domain walls are firmly pinned on top of ferroelectric domain boundaries. In this work we investigate the influence of pinned magnetic domain walls on the magnetization reversal process in a Co40Fe40B20 wedge film that is coupled to a ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate via interface strain transfer. We show that the magnetic field direction can be used to select between two distinct magnetization reversal mechanisms, namely (1) double switching events involving alternate stripe domains at a time or (2) synchronized switching of all domains. Furthermore, scaling of the switching fields with domain width and film thickness is also found to depend on field orientation. These results are explained by considering the dissimilar energies of the two types of pinned magnetic domain walls that are formed in the system.
