Windowed Dictionary Design for Delay-Aware OMP Channel Estimation under Fractional Doppler

Delay-Doppler (DD) signal processing has emerged as a powerful tool for analyzing multipath and time-varying channel effects. Due to the inherent sparsity of the wireless channel in the DD domain, compressed sensing (CS) based techniques, such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), are commonly used for channel estimation. However, many of these methods assume integer Doppler shifts, which can lead to performance degradation in the presence of fractional Doppler. In this paper, we propose a windowed dictionary design technique while we develop a delay-aware orthogonal matching pursuit (DA-OMP) algorithm that mitigates the impact of fractional Doppler shifts on DD domain channel estimation. First, we apply receiver windowing to reduce the correlation between the columns of our proposed dictionary matrix. Second, we introduce a delay-aware interference block to quantify the interference caused by fractional Doppler. This approach removes the need for a pre-determined stopping criterion, which is typically based on the number of propagation paths, in conventional OMP algorithm. Our simulation results confirm the effective performance of our proposed DA-OMP algorithm using the proposed windowed dictionary in terms of normalized mean square error (NMSE) of the channel estimate. In particular, our proposed DA-OMP algorithm demonstrates substantial gains compared to standard OMP algorithm in terms of channel estimation NMSE with and without windowed dictionary.

Reduced Overhead Channel Estimation for OTFS With Split Pilot

Orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS) is currently one of the most robust modulation techniques for high Doppler channels. However, to reap the benefits of OTFS, an accurate channel estimation is crucial. To this mean, the widely used embedded pilot structures use twice the channel length size as a delay guard to avoid interference between the pilot and data symbols. Hence, incurring a large spectral efficiency loss, especially in wideband systems where the channel length is large. To reduce the pilot overhead, we propose a novel split pilot structure with two impulse pilots. With two pilots, we can use one to cancel the other, thus, capable of removing the pilot interference over data. To remove the data interference from the pilot, we also propose an iterative joint channel estimation and detection technique tailored to the proposed split pilot structure. With the interference caused by the delay spread solved, we reduce the number of delay guards in our system by half, significantly improving the spectral efficiency. To corroborate our claims, we numerically demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve performance levels comparable to that of the full-guard method while using only half the delay guard. Additionally, we show that our proposed iterative channel estimating technique has a fast convergence speed, requiring only two iterations.

RIS-Assisted OTFS Communications: Phase Configuration via Received Energy Maximization

In this paper, we explore the integration of two revolutionary technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, to enhance high-speed wireless communications. We introduce a novel phase shift design algorithm for RIS-assisted OTFS, optimizing energy reception and channel gain in dynamic environments. The study evaluates the proposed approach in a downlink scenario, demonstrating significant performance improvements compared to benchmark schemes in the literature, particularly in terms of bit error rate (BER). Our results showcase the potential of RIS to enhance the system's performance. Specifically, our proposed phase shift design technique outperforms the benchmark solutions by over 4 dB. Furthermore, even greater gains can be obtained as the number of RIS elements increases.

SC-FDMA as a Delay-Doppler Domain Modulation Technique

This paper compares orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation and single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA). It shows that these are equivalent except for a set of linear phase shifts, applied to the transmit/receive data symbols, which can be absorbed into the channel. Through mathematical and numerical analysis, it is confirmed that SC-FDMA is in fact a delay-Doppler domain multiplexing technique that can achieve the same performance gains as those of OTFS in time-varying wireless environments. This is a promising result as SC-FDMA is already a part of the current wireless standards. The derivations in this paper also shed light on the time-frequency resources used by the delay-Doppler domain data symbols with the fine granularity of delay and Doppler spacings. While comparing the detection performance of the two waveforms, a timing offset (TO) estimation technique with orders of magnitude higher accuracy than the existing solutions in the literature is proposed. From multiple access viewpoint, the underlying tile structures in the time-frequency domain for OTFS and SC-FDMA are discussed. Finally, multiuser input-output relationships for both waveforms in the uplink are derived.

A Unified Framework for Pulse-Shaping on Delay-Doppler Plane

Delay-Doppler multiplexing has recently stirred a great deal of attention in research community. While multiple studies have investigated pulse-shaping aspects of this technology, it is challenging to identify the relationships between different pulse-shaping techniques and their properties. Hence, in this paper, we classify these techniques into two types, namely, circular and linear pulse-shaping. This paves the way towards the development of a unified framework that brings deep insights into the properties, similarities, and distinctions of different pulse-shaping techniques. This framework reveals that the recently emerged waveform orthogonal delay-Doppler multiplexing (ODDM) is a linear pulse-shaping technique with an interesting staircase spectral behaviour. Using this framework, we derive a generalized input-output relationship that captures the influence of pulse-shaping on the effective channel. We also introduce a unified modem for delay-Doppler plane pulse-shaping that leads to the proposal of fast convolution based low-complexity structures. Based on our complexity analysis, the proposed modem structures are substantially simpler than the existing ones in the literature. Furthermore, we propose effective techniques that not only reduce the out-of-band (OOB) emissions of circularly pulse-shaped signals but also improve the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of both circular and linear pulse-shaping techniques. Finally, we extensively compare different pulse-shaping techniques using various performance metrics.

Downlink Transmission in FBMC-based Massive MIMO with Co-located and Distributed Antennas

This paper introduces a practical precoding method for the downlink of Filter Bank Multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed method comprises a two-stage precoder, consisting of a fractionally spaced prefilter (FSP) per subcarrier to equalize the channel across each subcarrier band. This is followed by a conventional precoder that concentrates the signals of different users at their spatial locations, ensuring each user receives only the intended information. In practical scenarios, a perfect channel reciprocity may not hold due to radio chain mismatches in the uplink and downlink. Moreover, the channel state information (CSI) may not be perfectly known at the base station. To address these issues, we theoretically analyze the performance of the proposed precoder in presence of imperfect CSI and channel reciprocity calibration errors. Our investigation covers both co-located (cell-based) and cell-free massive MIMO cases. In the cell-free massive MIMO setup, we propose an access point selection method based on the received SINRs of different users in the uplink. Finally, we conduct numerical evaluations to assess the performance of the proposed precoder. Our results demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed precoder when compared with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) method as a benchmark.

A Generalized Framework for Pulse-Shaping on Delay-Doppler Plane

The primary objective of this paper is to establish a generalized framework for pulse-shaping on the delay-Doppler plane. To this end, we classify delay-Doppler pulse-shaping techniques into two types, namely, circular and linear pulse-shaping. This paves the way towards the development of a generalized pulse-shaping framework. Our generalized framework provides the opportunity to compare different pulse-shaping techniques under the same umbrella while bringing new insights into their properties. In particular, our derivations based on this framework reveal that the recently emerged waveform orthogonal delay-Doppler multiplexing modulation (ODDM) is a linear pulse-shaping technique. By presenting ODDM under our generalized framework, we clearly explain the observed staircase behavior of its spectrum which has not been previously reported in the literature. Another contribution of this paper is proposal of a simple out-of-band (OOB) emission reduction technique by inserting a small number of zero-guard (ZG) symbols along the delay dimension of the circularly pulse-shaped signals. Additionally, inserting the zero-guards improves the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of both circular and linear pulse-shaping techniques. Finally, our simulation results confirm the validity of our mathematical derivations, claims and the effectiveness of the ZGs in OOB reduction and BER performance improvement.

RIS Meets Aerodynamic HAPS: A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture for integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) to establish connection between terrestrial ground stations which are unconnected due to blockage. We propose a new network framework where reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is mounted on an aerodynamic high altitude platform station (HAPS), referred to as aerodynamic HAPS-RIS. This can be one of the promising candidates among non-terrestrial RIS (NT-RIS) platforms. We formulate a mathematical model of the cascade channel gain and time-varying effects based on the predictable mobility of the aerodynamic HAPS-RIS. We propose a multi-objective optimization problem for designing the RIS phase shifts to maximize the cascade channel gain while forcing the Doppler spread to zero, and minimizing the delay spread upper bound. Considering an RIS reference element, we find a closed-form solution to this optimization problem based on the Pareto optimality of the aforementioned objective functions. Finally, we evaluate and show the effective performance of our proposed closed-form solution through numerical simulations.

Truncated Turbo Equalizer with SIC for OTFS

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising candidate waveform for the next generation wireless communication systems. OTFS places data in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, which simplifies channel estimation in highmobility scenarios. However, due to the 2-D convolution effect of the time-varying channel in the DD domain, equalization is still a challenge for OTFS. Existing equalizers for OTFS are either highly complex or they do not consider intercarrier interference present in high-mobility scenarios. Hence, in this paper, we propose a novel two-stage detection technique for coded OTFS systems. Our proposed detector brings orders of magnitude computational complexity reduction compared to existing methods. At the first stage, it truncates the channel by considering only the significant coefficients along the Doppler dimension and performs turbo equalization. To reduce the computational load of the turbo equalizer, our proposed method deploys the modified LSQR (mLSQR) algorithm. At the second stage, with only two successive interference cancellation (SIC) iterations, our proposed detector removes the residual interference caused by channel truncation. To evaluate the performance of our proposed truncated turbo equalizer with SIC (TTE-SIC), we set the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizer without channel truncation as a benchmark. Our simulation results show that the proposed TTE-SIC technique achieves about the same bit error rate (BER) performance as the benchmark.

Low-Complexity Reliability-Based Equalization and Detection for OTFS-NOMA

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently emerged as a potential 6G candidate waveform which provides improved performance in high-mobility scenarios. In this paper we investigate the combination of OTFS with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Existing equalization and detection methods for OTFS-NOMA, such as minimum-mean-squared error with successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC), suffer from poor performance. Additionally, existing iterative methods for single-user OTFS based on low-complexity iterative least-squares solvers are not directly applicable to the NOMA scenario due to the presence of multi-user interference (MUI). Motivated by this, in this paper we propose a low-complexity method for equalization and detection for OTFS-NOMA. The proposed method uses a novel reliability zone (RZ) detection scheme which estimates the reliable symbols of the users and then uses interference cancellation to remove MUI. The thresholds for the RZ detector are optimized in a greedy manner to further improve detection performance. In order to optimize these thresholds, we modify the least squares with QR-factorization (LSQR) algorithm used for channel equalization to compute the the post-equalization mean-squared error (MSE), and track the evolution of this MSE throughout the iterative detection process. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed equalization and detection technique to the existing MMSE-SIC benchmark in terms of symbol error rate (SER).

Practical Synchronization for OTFS

In the existing literature on joint timing and frequency synchronization of orthogonal time frequency space modulation (OTFS), practically infeasible impulse pilot with large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is deployed. Hence, in this paper, we propose a timing offset (TO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation for OTFS over a linear time-varying (LTV) channel, using a low PAPR pilot structure. The proposed technique utilizes the recently proposed practically feasible pilot structure with a cyclic prefix (PCP). We exploit the periodic properties of PCP in both delay and time domains to find the starting point of each OTFS block. Furthermore, we propose a two-stage CFO estimation technique with over an order of magnitude higher estimation accuracy than the existing estimator using the impulse pilot. In the first stage, a coarse CFO estimate is obtained which is refined in the second stage, through our proposed maximum likelihood (ML) based approach. The proposed ML-based approach deploys the generalized complex exponential basis expansion model (GCE-BEM) to capture the time variations of the channel, absorb them into the pilot and provide an accurate CFO estimate. Since our proposed synchronization technique utilizes the same pilot deployed for channel estimation, it does not require any additional overhead. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our proposed synchronization technique through simulations. We also compare and show the superior performance of our proposed technique to the only other existing joint TO and CFO estimation method in OTFS literature.

Joint Channel Estimation and Equalization in Massive MIMO Using a Single Pilot Subcarrier

The focus of this letter is on the reduction of the large pilot overhead in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose a novel joint channel estimation and equalization technique that requires only one pilot subcarrier, reducing the pilot overhead by orders of magnitude. We take advantage of the coherent bandwidth spanning over multiple subcarrier bands. This allows for a band of subcarriers to be equalized with the channel frequency response (CFR) at a single subcarrier. Subsequently, the detected data symbols are considered as virtual pilots, and their CFRs are updated without additional pilot overhead. Thereafter, the remaining channel estimation and equalization can be performed in a sliding manner. With this approach, we use multiple channel estimates to equalize the data at each subcarrier. This allows us to take advantage of frequency diversity and improve the detection performance. Finally, we corroborate the above claims through extensive numerical analysis, showing the superior performance of our proposed technique compared to conventional methods.

Low-Complexity Equalization and Detection for OTFS-NOMA

Our proposed method uses an iterative process where in each iteration, an equalizer based on the least-squares with QR factorization (LSQR) algorithm is followed by a novel reliability zone (RZ) detection scheme which estimates the reliable symbols of the users and then uses interference cancellation to remove MUI. We present numerical results which demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method, in terms of symbol error rate (SER), to the existing MMSE-SIC benchmark scheme. Additionally, we present results which illustrate that a judicious choice of RZ thresholds is important for optimizing the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Downlink Precoding for FBMC-based Massive MIMO with Imperfect Channel Reciprocity

In this paper, a practical precoding method for the downlink of filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is developed. The proposed method includes a two-stage precoder consisting of a fractionally spaced prefilter (FSP) per subcarrier for flattening/equalizing the channel across the subcarrier band, followed by a conventional precoder whose goal is to concentrate the signals of different users at their spatial locations. This way, each user receives only the intended information. In this paper, we take note that channel reciprocity may not hold perfectly in practical scenarios due to the mismatch of radio chains in uplink and downlink. Additionally, channel state information (CSI) at the base station may not be perfectly known. This, together with imperfect channel reciprocity can lead to detrimental effects on the downlink precoder performance. We theoretically analyze the performance of the proposed precoder in the presence of imperfect CSI and channel reciprocity calibration errors. This leads to an effective method for compensating these effects. Finally, we numerically evaluate the performance of the proposed precoder. Our results show that the proposed precoder leads to an excellent performance when benchmarked against OFDM.

Joint CFO and Channel Estimation for RIS-aided Multi-user Massive MIMO Systems

Accurate channel estimation is essential to achieve the performance gains promised by the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless communications. In the uplink of multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) can significantly degrade the channel estimation performance. This becomes more critical in RIS-aided communications, as even a small channel estimation error leads to a significant performance loss. Motivated by this, we propose a joint CFO and channel estimation method for RIS-aided multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Our proposed pilot structure allows accurate estimation of the CFOs without multi-user interference (MUI), using the same pilot resources for both CFO estimation and channel estimation. For joint estimation of multiple users' CFOs, a correlation-based approach is devised using the received signals at all BS antennas. Using least-squares (LS) estimation with the obtained CFO values, the channels of all users are jointly estimated. For optimization of the RIS phase shifts at the data transmission stage, we propose a projected gradient method (PGM). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides an improvement in the normalized mean-square error (NMSE) of channel estimation as well as in the bit error rate (BER) performance.

OTFS Without CP in Massive MIMO: Breaking Doppler Limitations with TR-MRC and Windowing

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently emerged as an effective waveform to tackle the linear time-varying channels. In OTFS literature, approximately constant channel gains for every group of samples within each OTFS block are assumed. This leads to limitations for OTFS on the maximum Doppler frequency that it can tolerate. Additionally, presence of cyclic prefix (CP) in OTFS signal limits the flexibility in adjusting its parameters to improve its robustness against channel time variations. Therefore, in this paper, we study the possibility of removing the CP overhead from OTFS and breaking its Doppler limitations through multiple antenna processing in the large antenna regime. We asymptotically analyze the performance of time-reversal maximum ratio combining (TR-MRC) for OTFS without CP. We show that doubly dispersive channel effects average out in the large antenna regime when the maximum Doppler shift is within OTFS limitations. However, for considerably large Doppler shifts exceeding OTFS limitations, a residual Doppler effect remains. Our asymptotic derivations reveal that this effect converges to scaling of the received symbols in delay dimension with the samples of a Bessel function that depends on the maximum Doppler shift. Hence, we propose a novel residual Doppler correction (RDC) windowing technique that can break the Doppler limitations of OTFS and lead to a performance close to that of the linear time-invariant channels. Finally, we confirm the validity of our claims through simulations.

Low-Complexity Joint CFO and Channel Estimation for RIS-aided OFDM Systems

Accurate channel estimation is essential for achieving the performance gains offered by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. A variety of channel estimation methods have been proposed for such systems; however, none of the existing methods takes into account the effect of synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offset (CFO). In general, CFO can significantly degrade channel estimation performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of CFO on channel estimation for RIS-aided OFDM systems. Furthermore, we propose a joint CFO and channel impulse response (CIR) estimation method for these systems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, and also demonstrate that the use of time-domain rather than frequency-domain estimation in this context results in an improvement in the mean-squared error (MSE) performance of channel estimation as well as a significantly lower overall computational complexity.

FBMC Receiver Design and Analysis for Medium and Large Scale Antenna Systems

In this paper, we design receivers for filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive MIMO considering practical aspects such as channel estimation and equalization. In particular, we propose a spectrally efficient pilot structure and a channel estimation technique in the uplink to jointly estimate all the users' channel impulse responses. We mathematically analyze our proposed channel estimator and find the statistics of the channel estimation errors. These statistics are incorporated into our proposed equalizers to deal with the imperfect channel state information (CSI) effect. We revisit the channel equalization problem for FBMC-based massive MIMO, address the shortcomings of the existing equalizers in the literature, and make them more applicable to practical scenarios. The proposed receiver in this paper consists of two stages. In the first stage, a linear combining of the received signals at the base station (BS) antennas provides a coarse channel equalization and removes any multiuser interference. In the second stage, a per subcarrier fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) takes care of any residual distortion of the channel for the user of interest. We propose an FSE design based on the equivalent channel at the linear combiner output. This enables the applicability of our proposed technique to small and/or distributed antenna setups such as cell-free massive MIMO. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed techniques is corroborated through numerical analysis.
