Yangian Symmetry in Five Dimensions

Quantum gravity in AdS$_7 \times$S$^4$ is dual to a 6d superconformal field theory, known as the 6d $(2,0)$ theory, which is very challenging to describe because it lacks a conventional Lagrangian description. On the other hand, certain null reductions of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory give rise to 5d Lagrangian theories with $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry, $SO(5)$ R-symmetry, and 24 supercharges. This appears to be closely related to the superconformal group of a 3d superconformal Chern-Simons theory known as the ABJM theory, which is believed to be integrable in the planar limit, if one exchanges the role of conformal and R-symmetry. In this note, we construct a representation of the 5d superconformal group using 6d supertwistors and show that it admits an infinite dimensional extension known as Yangian symmetry, which opens up the possiblity that these 5d theories are exactly solvable in the planar limit.

Effective Field Theories and Cosmological Scattering Equations

We propose worldsheet formulae for wavefunction coefficients of the massive non-linear sigma model (NLSM), scalar Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI), and special Galileon (sGal) theories in de Sitter momentum space in terms of the recently proposed cosmological scattering equations constructed from conformal generators in the future boundary. The four-point integrands are assembled from simple building blocks and we identify a double copy prescription mapping the NLSM wavefunction coefficient to the DBI and sGal wavefunction coefficients, including mass deformations and curvature corrections. Finally, we compute the soft limits of these wavefunction coefficients and find that they can be written in terms of boundary conformal generators acting on contact diagrams.

Cosmological Scattering Equations at Tree-level and One-loop

We recently proposed a formula for tree-level $n$-point correlators of massive $ϕ^4$ theory in de Sitter momentum space which consists of an integral over $n$ punctures on the Riemann sphere and differential operators in the future boundary dubbed the cosmological scattering equations. This formula was explicitly checked up to six points via a map to Witten diagrams using the global residue theorem. In this work we provide further details of these calculations and present an alternative formulation based on a double cover of the Riemann sphere. This framework can be used to derive simple graphical rules for evaluating the integrals more efficiently. Using these rules, we check the validity of our formula up to eight points and sketch the derivation of $n$-point correlators. Finally, we propose a similar formula for 1-loop $n$-point correlators in terms of an integral over $(n+2)$ punctures on the Riemann sphere, which we verify at four points. The 1-loop formula holds for small masses in de Sitter space and arbitrary masses satisfying the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound after Wick-rotating to Anti-de Sitter space.

Five-Dimensional Path Integrals for Six-Dimensional Conformal Field Theories

In this paper we derive Ward-Takahashi identities from the path integral of supersymmetric five-dimensional field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ spacetime symmetry in the presence of instantons. We explicitly show how $SU(1,3)$ is enhanced to $SU(1,3)\times U(1)$ where the additional $U(1)$ acts non-perturbatively. Solutions to such Ward-Takahashi identities were previously obtained from correlators of six-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories but where the instanton number was replaced by the momentum along a null direction. Here we study the reverse procedure whereby we construct correlation functions out of towers of five-dimensional operators which satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identities of a six-dimensional conformal field theory. This paves the way to computing observables in six dimensions using five-dimensional path integral techniques. We also argue that, once the instanton sector is included into the path integral, the coupling of the five-dimensional Lagrangian must be quantised, leaving no free continuous parameters.

Cosmological Scattering Equations

We propose a worldsheet formula for tree-level correlation functions describing a scalar field with arbitrary mass and quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space, which is a simple model for inflationary cosmology. The correlation functions are located on the future boundary of the spacetime and are Fourier-transformed to momentum space. Our formula is supported on mass-deformed scattering equations involving conformal generators in momentum space and reduces to the CHY formula for $ϕ^4$ amplitudes in the flat space limit. Using the global residue theorem, we verify that it reproduces the Witten diagram expansion at four and six points, and sketch the extension to $n$ points.

Instanton Worldlines in Five-Dimensional $Ω$-Deformed Gauge Theory

We discuss the Bosonic sector of a class of supersymmetric non-Lorentzian five-dimensional gauge field theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. These actions have a Lagrange multiplier which imposes a novel $Ω$-deformed anti-self-dual gauge field constraint. Using a generalised 't Hooft ansatz we find the constraint equation linearizes allowing us to construct a wide class of explicit solutions. These include finite action configurations that describe worldlines of anti-instantons which can be created and annihilated. We also describe the dynamics on the constraint surface.

Five-Dimensional Non-Lorentzian Conformal Field Theories and their Relation to Six-Dimensions

We study correlation functions in five-dimensional non-Lorentzian theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. Examples of such theories have recently been obtained as $Ω$-deformed Yang-Mills Lagrangians arising from a null reduction of six-dimensional superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski space. The correlators exhibit a rich structure with many novel properties compared to conventional correlators in Lorentzian conformal field theories. Moreover, identifying the instanton number with the Fourier mode number of the dimensional reduction offers a hope to formulate six-dimensional conformal field theories in terms of five-dimensional Lagrangian theories. To this end we show that the Fourier decompositions of six-dimensional correlation functions solve the Ward identities of the the $SU(1,3)$ symmetry, although more general solutions are possible. Conversely we illustrate how one can reconstruct six-dimensional correlation functions from those of a five-dimensional theory, and do so explicitly at 2- and 3-points. We also show that, in a suitable decompactification limit $Ω\to 0$, the correlation functions become those of the DLCQ description.

Bosonic Symmetries of $(2,0)$ DLCQ Field Theories

We investigate symmetries of the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory reduced along a compact null direction. The action for this theory was deduced by considering M-theory on $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and reducing the $AdS_7$ factor along a time-like Hopf fibration which breaks one quarter of the supersymmetry and reduces the isometry group from $SO(6,2)$ to $SU(3,1)$. The boundary theory was previously shown to have 24 supercharges and a Lifshitz scaling symmetry. In this paper, we show that it has four boost-like symmetries and an additional conformal symmetry which furnish a representation of $SU(3,1)$ when combined with the other bosonic symmetries, providing a nontrivial check of the holographic correspondence.

Double copy structure and the flat space limit of conformal correlators in even dimensions

We analyse the flat space limit of 3-point correlators in momentum space for general conformal field theories in even spacetime dimensions, and show they exhibit a double copy structure similar to that found in odd dimensions. In even dimensions, the situation is more complicated because correlators contain branch cuts and divergences which need to be renormalised. We describe the analytic continuation of momenta required to extract the flat space limit, and show that the flat space limit is encoded in the leading singularity of a 1-loop triangle integral which serves as a master integral for 3-point correlators in even dimensions. We then give a detailed analysis of the renormalised correlators in four dimensions where the flat space limit of stress tensor correlators are controlled by the coefficients in the trace anomaly.

Non-Lorentzian M5-brane Theories from Holography

M-theory on $AdS_7 \times S^4$ admits a description where the $AdS_7$ factor is constructed as a timelike Hopf fibration over a non-compact three dimensional complex projective space $\tilde{\mathbb{CP}}^3$. We consider the worldvolume theory for M5-branes at a fixed $\tilde{\mathbb{CP}}^3$ radius which, after reduction along the timelike fibre, is given by an $Ω$-deformed Yang-Mills theory with eight supercharges. Taking the radius to infinity then induces a classical RG flow. We construct the fixed point action which has an enhanced 24 supercharges and which can be understood as the $(2,0)$ theory of M5-branes on flat space reduced along a compact null Killing direction.

Lattice N=4 three-dimensional super-Yang-Mills

We describe our recent work on the lattice formulation of N=4 three-dimensional super-Yang-Mills. Our formulation was based on the Donaldson-Witten twist, but we have also been studying the formulation based on the Blau-Thompson twist by Joseph. We find in the latter case there is a single counterterm necessary to restore supersymmetry in the continuum limit, and that this counterterm can be computed with a two-loop calculation in lattice perturbation theory. It is crucial that this three-dimensional model is super-renormalizable. We also describe some of the motivations for studying three-dimensional theories, including mirror symmetry and holographic cosmology.

Towards a Worldsheet Description of N=8 Supergravity

In this note we address the worldsheet description of 4-dimensional N=8 supergravity using ambitwistors. After gauging an appropriate current algebra, we argue that the only physical vertex operators correspond to the N=8 supermultiplet. It has previously been shown that worldsheet correlators give rise to supergravity tree level scattering amplitudes. We extend this work by proposing a definition for genus-one amplitudes that passes several consistency checks such as exhibiting modular invariance and reproducing the expected infrared behavior of 1-loop supergravity amplitudes.

Yangian-Like Symmetry of Probe-Brane Actions

We demonstrate that world-volume actions describing probe branes in anti de Sitter space have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra that is reminiscent of Yangian symmetry. Two essential ingredients are responsible for this symmetry. The first is an inversion symmetry of anti de Sitter space. The second is the compensating gauge transformations that are required to properly describe global symmetries after gauge fixing the general coordinate invariance.
