High Fidelity Single Qubit Operations using Pulsed EPR

Systematic errors in spin rotation operations using simple RF pulses place severe limitations on the usefulness of the pulsed magnetic resonance methods in quantum computing applications. In particular, the fidelity of quantum logic operations performed on electron spin qubits falls well below the threshold for the application of quantum algorithms. Using three independent techniques, we demonstrate the use of composite pulses to improve this fidelity by several orders of magnitude. The observed high-fidelity operations are limited by pulse phase errors, but nevertheless fall within the limits required for the application of quantum error correction.

A new mechanism for electron spin echo envelope modulation

Electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) has been observed for the first time from a coupled hetero-spin pair of electron and nucleus in liquid solution. Previously, modulation effects in spin echo experiments have only been described in liquid solutions for a coupled pair of homonuclear spins in NMR or a pair of resonant electron spins in EPR. We observe low-frequency ESEEM (26 and 52 kHz) due to a new mechanism present for any electron spin with S>1/2 that is hyperfine coupled to a nuclear spin. In our case these are electron spin (S=3/2) and nuclear spin (I=1) in the endohedral fullerene N@C60. The modulation is shown to arise from second order effects in the isotropic hyperfine coupling of an electron and 14N nucleus.

Measuring errors in single qubit rotations by pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance

The ability to measure and reduce systematic errors in single-qubit logic gates is crucial when evaluating quantum computing implementations. We describe pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) sequences that can be used to measure precisely even small systematic errors in rotations of electron-spin-based qubits. Using these sequences we obtain values for errors in rotation angle and axis for single-qubit rotations using a commercial EPR spectrometer. We conclude that errors in qubit operations by pulsed EPR are not limiting factors in the implementation of electron-spin based quantum computers.

Comparison of the normal state properties of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ and its deuterated analogue in high magnetic fields and under high hydrostatic pressures

Details of the Fermi-surface topology of deuterated $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ ~have been measured as a function of pressure, and compared with equivalent measurements of the undeuterated salt. We find that the superconducting transition temperature is much more dramatically suppressed by increasing pressure in the deuterated salt. It is suggested that this is linked to pressure-induced changes in the Fermi-surface topology, which occur more rapidly in the deuterated salt than in the undeuterated salt as the pressure is raised. Our data suggest that the negative isotope effect observed on deuteration is due to small differences in Fermi-surface topology caused by the isotopic substitution.

Superconductivity, incoherence and Anderson localization in the crystalline organic conductor (BEDT-TTF)_3Cl_2.2H_2O at high pressures

The conducting properties of the pressure-induced, layered organic superconductor (BEDT-TTF)_3Cl_2.2H_20 have been studied at 13.5 and 14.0 kbar using low temperatures, high magnetic fields and two-axis rotation. An upper critical field that is significantly larger than that expected from the Pauli paramagnetic limit is observed when the field is applied parallel to the conducting layers. The angle dependent magnetoresistance suggests incoherent transport between the conducting layers at both pressures and the observed negative magnetoresistance at 13.5 kbar can be explained by considering Anderson localization within the layers. Further application of pressure destroys the effects of localization.

Cyclotron resonance in the layered perovskite superconductor Sr2RuO4

We report a detailed study of the magnetic-field-orientation dependence of the millimetre-wave magnetoconductivity of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 We find two harmonic series of cyclotron resonances. We assign the first, corresponding to a quasiparticle mass of $4.29 \pm 0.05 m_{\rm e}$, where $m_{\rm e}$ is the free-electron mass, to the $β$ Fermi-surface section. We assign the second series, which contains only odd harmonics, to cyclotron resonance of the $γ$ Fermi-surface section, yielding a quasiparticle mass of $12.35 \pm 0.20 m_{\rm e}$. A third, single cyclotron resonance, corresponding to a quasiparticle mass of $5.60 \pm 0.03 m_{\rm e}$, is attributed to the $α$ Fermi-surface section. In addition, we find a very strong absorption mode in the presence of a magnetic field component parallel to the quasi-two-dimensional planes of the sample. Its dependence on the orientation of the magnetic field cannot be described in the context of conventional cyclotron resonance, and the origin of this mode is not yet clear.
