Controlling synchronization in large laser networks using number theory

Synchronization in networks with delayed coupling are ubiquitous in nature and play a key role in almost all fields of science including physics, biology, ecology, climatology and sociology. In general, the published works on network synchronization are based on data analysis and simulations, with little experimental verification. Here we develop and experimentally demonstrate various multi-cluster phase synchronization scenarios within coupled laser networks. Synchronization is controlled by the network connectivity in accordance to number theory, whereby the number of synchronized clusters equals the greatest common divisor of network loops. This dependence enables remote switching mechanisms to control the optical phase coherence among distant lasers by local network connectivity adjustments. Our results serve as a benchmark for a broad range of coupled oscillators in science and technology, and offer feasible routes to achieve multi-user secure protocols in communication networks and parallel distribution of versatile complex combinatorial tasks in optical computers.

Measuring maximal eigenvalue distribution of Wishart random matrices with coupled lasers

We determined the probability distribution of the combined output power from twenty five coupled fiber lasers and show that it agrees well with the Tracy-Widom, Majumdar-Vergassola and Vivo-Majumdar-Bohigas distributions of the largest eigenvalue of Wishart random matrices with no fitting parameters. This was achieved with $500,000$ measurements of the combined output power from the fiber lasers, that continuously changes with variations of the fiber lasers lengths. We show experimentally that for small deviations of the combined output power over its mean value the Tracy-Widom distribution is correct, while for large deviations the Majumdar-Vergassola and Vivo-Majumdar-Bohigas distributions are correct.

Modal dynamics in multimode fibers

The dynamics of modes and their states of polarizations in multimode fibers as a function of time, space, and wavelength are experimentally and theoretically investigated. The results reveal that the states of polarizations are displaced in Poincare sphere representation when varying the angular orientations of the polarization at the incident light. Such displacements, which complicates the interpretation of the results, are overcome by resorting to modified Poincare spheres representation. With such modification it should be possible to predict the output modes and their state of polarization when the input mode and state of polarization are known.

Principal modes in fiber amplifiers

The dynamics of the state of polarization in single mode and multimode fiber amplifiers are presented. The experimental results reveal that although the state of polarizations at the output can vary over a large range when changing the temperatures of the fiber amplifiers, the variations are significantly reduced when resorting to the principal states of polarization in single mode fiber amplifiers and principal modes in multimode fiber amplifiers.

Extreme value statistics in coupled lasers

Experimental configuration for investigating the dynamics and the statistics of the phase locking level of coupled lasers that have no common frequency is presented. The results reveal that the probability distribution of the phase locking level of such coupled lasers fits a Gumbel distribution that describes the extreme value statistic of Gaussian processes. A simple model, based on the spectral response of the coupled lasers, is also described, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Can one passively phase lock 25 fiber lasers?

Yes, it is possible to phase lock 25 fiber lasers but only for a short time. Our experiments on passively phase locking two-dimensional arrays of coupled fiber lasers reveal that the average phase locking level of 25 lasers is low ($20%-30%$) but can exceed 90% on rare instantaneous events. The average phase locking level was found to decrease for larger number of lasers in the array and increase with the connectivity of the array.

Fiber amplification of radially and azimuthally polarized laser light

The results on amplifying either radially or azimuthally polarized light with a fiber amplifier are presented. Experimental results reveal that more than 85% polarization purity can be retained at the output even with 40dB amplification, and that efficient conversion of the amplified light to linear polarization can be obtained.

Phase locking of coupled lasers with many longitudinal modes

Detailed experimental and theoretical investigations on two coupled fiber lasers, each with many longitudinal modes, reveal that the behavior of the longitudinal modes depends on both the coupling strength as well as the detuning between them. For low to moderate coupling strength only longitudinal modes which are common for both lasers phase-lock while those that are not common gradually disappear. For larger coupling strengths, the longitudinal modes that are not common reappear and phase-lock. When the coupling strength approaches unity the coupled lasers behave as a single long cavity with correspondingly denser longitudinal modes. Finally, we show that the gradual increase in phase-locking as a function of the coupling strength results from competition between phase-locked and non phase-locked longitudinal modes.

Temporal behavior of synchronization between chaotic fiber lasers

A new configuration for synchronizing two chaotic fiber lasers, which includes both coupling and losses, is presented. Experimental and calculated results reveal that the synchronization time can be significantly shorter than with configuration that have only coupling.

Coherent addition of two dimensional array of fiber lasers

Configurations for efficient free space coherent addition of four separate fiber lasers arranged in two dimensional array are presented. They include compact and robust interferometric combiners that can be inserted either inside or outside the cavity of the combined lasers system. The results reveal that over 85% combining efficiency can be obtained.

Design of a High Power Continuous Source of Broadband Down-Converted Light

We present the design and experimental proof of principle of a low threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) that continuously oscillates over a large bandwidth allowed by phase matching. The large oscillation bandwidth is achieved with a selective two-photon loss that suppresses the inherent mode competition, which tends to narrow the bandwidth in conventional OPOs. Our design performs pairwise mode-locking of many frequency pairs, in direct equivalence to passive mode-locking of ultrashort pulsed lasers. The ability to obtain high powers of continuous \textit{and} broadband down-converted light enables the optimal exploitation of the correlations within the down-converted spectrum, thereby strongly affecting two-photon interactions even at classically high power levels, and opening new venues for applications such as two-photon spectroscopy and microscopy and optical spread spectrum communication.

Nonlinear interactions with an ultrahigh flux of broadband entangled photons

We experimentally demonstrate sum-frequency generation (SFG) with entangled photon-pairs, generating as many as 40,000 SFG photons per second, visible even to the naked eye. The nonclassical nature of the interaction is exhibited by a linear intensity-dependence of the nonlinear process. The key element in our scheme is the generation of an ultrahigh flux of entangled photons while maintaining their nonclassical properties. This is made possible by generating the down-converted photons as broadband as possible, orders of magnitude wider than the pump. This approach is readily applicable for other nonlinear interactions, and may be applicable for various quantum-measurement tasks.

Temporal shaping of entangled photons

We experimentally demonstrate shaping of the two-photon wavefunction of entangled photon-pairs, utilizing coherent pulse-shaping techniques. By performing spectral-phase manipulations we tailor the two-photon wavefunction exactly like a coherent ultrashort pulse. To observe the shaping we perform sum-frequency generation (SFG) with an ultrahigh flux of entangled photons. At the appropriate conditions, SFG performs as a coincidence detector with an ultrashort response time (~100 fs), enabling a direct observation of the two-photon wavefunction. This property also enables us to demonstrate background-free, high-visibility two-photon interference oscillations.

Quantum lithography by coherent control of classical light pulses

The smallest spot in optical lithography and microscopy is generally limited by diffraction. Quantum lithography, which utilizes interference between groups of N entangled photons, was recently proposed to beat the diffraction limit by a factor N. Here we propose a simple method to obtain N photons interference with classical pulses that excite a narrow multiphoton transition, thus shifting the "quantum weight" from the electromagnetic field to the lithographic material. We show how a practical complete lithographic scheme can be developed and demonstrate the underlying principles experimentally by two-photon interference in atomic Rubidium, to obtain focal spots that beat the diffraction limit by a factor of 2.

Two photon absorption and coherent control with broadband down-converted light

We experimentally demonstrate two-photon absorption (TPA) with broadband down-converted light (squeezed vacuum). Although incoherent and exhibiting the statistics of a thermal noise, broadband down-converted light can induce TPA with the same sharp temporal behavior as femtosecond pulses, while exhibiting the high spectral resolution of the narrowband pump laser. Using pulse-shaping methods, we coherently control TPA in Rubidium, demonstrating spectral and temporal resolutions that are 3-5 orders of magnitude below the actual bandwidth and temporal duration of the light itself. Such properties can be exploited in various applications such as spread-spectrum optical communications, tomography and nonlinear microscopy.

Coherent control with broadband squeezed vacuum

We report the experimental demonstration of coherent control with high power, broadband squeezed vacuum. Although incoherent and exhibiting the statistics of a thermal noise, broadband squeezed vacuum is shown to induce certain two-photon interactions as a coherent ultrashort pulse with the same spectral bandwidth. Utilizing pulse-shaping techniques we coherently control the sum-frequency generation of broadband squeezed vacuum over a range of two orders of magnitude. Coherent control of two-photon interactions with broadband squeezed vacuum can potentially obtain spectral resolutions and extinction ratios that are practically unattainable with coherent pulses.
