Efficient, direct calculation of reaction rate coefficients based on a partially rearranged rovibrational Hamiltonian. A full-dimensional case study of the H$_2$ + D $\rightarrow$ HD + H reaction

It is shown that an efficient, direct, and fully quantum mechanical calculation of thermal reaction rate coefficients requires a new, partially rearranged form of the numerically-constructed exact kinetic energy part of the rovibrational Hamiltonian expressed in internal coordinates. Using this Hamiltonian and an accurate, full-dimensional potential energy surface characterizing the H$_2$ + H exchange reaction, developed by Mielke, Garrett, and Peterson (J. Chem. Phys. 2002, 116, 4142), reaction rate coefficients in the temperature range of $75-800$ K have been computed for the H$_2$ + D $\rightarrow$ HD + H reaction. The paper puts particular emphasis on the exact treatment of overall molecular rotation and on nuclear spin symmetry.

Precise frequencies of H$_2^{~16}$O lines protected for radio astronomy

Precise frequency values have been determined for H$_2^{~16}$O radio lines appearing in protected line lists of the International Astronomical Union and the Panel on Frequency Allocations of the US National Academy of Sciences. The improved precision is attributable to a spectroscopic network built from a large set of near-infrared Lamb-dip lines augmented with a handful of ultrahigh-accuracy rotational transitions. The ultraprecise H$_2^{~16}$O network contains 376 Lamb-dip lines recorded previously via our frequency-comb locked cavity-enhanced spectrometer. During the present study, altogether 55 target lines have been (re)measured at high accuracy. Due to our network-assisted measurements, the accuracy has been significantly improved with respect to previous direct radio-frequency measurements for all the protected lines of H$_2^{~16}$O above 750 GHz. Furthermore, 43 of these protected transitions now benefit from the accuracy of the new near-infrared Lamb dips reported in this paper.

Coupling Polyatomic Molecules to Lossy Nanocavities: Lindblad versus Schrödinger description

The use of cavities to impact molecular structure and dynamics has become popular. As cavities, in particular plasmonic nanocavities, are lossy and the lifetime of their modes can be very short, their lossy nature must be incorporated into the calculations. The Lindblad master equation is commonly considered as an appropriate tool to describe this lossy nature. This approach requires the dynamics of the density operator and is thus substantially more costly than approaches employing the Schrödinger equation for the quantum wave function when several or many nuclear degrees of freedom are involved. In this work we compare numerically the Lindblad and Schrödinger descriptions discussed in the literature for a molecular example where the cavity is pumped by a laser. The laser and cavity properties are varied over a range of parameters. It is found that the Schrödinger description adequately describes the dynamics of the polaritons and emission signal as long as the laser intensity is moderate and the pump time is not much longer than the lifetime of the cavity mode. Otherwise, it is demonstrated that the Schrödinger description gradually fails. We also show that the failure of the Schrödinger description can often be remedied by renormalizing the wave function at every step of the time propagation. The results are discussed and analyzed.

A quantum-chemical perspective on the laser-induced alignment and orientation dynamics of the CH$_3$X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules

The laser-induced alignment-and-orientation (A&O) dynamics of the prolate symmetric top CH$_3$X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules is investigated, with particular emphasis on the effect of halogen substitution on the rotational constants, dipole moments, and polarizabilities of these species, as these quantities determine the A&O dynamics. Insight into possible control schemes for preferred A&O dynamics of halogenated molecules and best practices for A&O simulations are provided, as well. It is shown that for accurate A&O-dynamics simulations it is necessary to employ large basis sets and high levels of electron correlation when computing the rotational constants, dipole moments, and polarizabilities. The benchmark-quality values of these molecular parameters, corresponding to the equilibrium, as well as the vibrationally averaged structures are obtained with the help of the focal-point analysis (FPA) technique and explicit electronic-structure computations utilizing the gold-standard CCSD(T) approach, basis sets up to quintuple-zeta quality, core-correlation contributions and, in particular, relativistic effects for CH$_3$Br and CH$_3$I. It is shown that the different A&O behavior of the CH$_3$X molecules in the optical regime is mostly caused by the differences in their polarizability anisotropy, in other terms, the size of the halogen atom. In contrast, the A&O dynamics of the CH$_3$X series induced by an intense few-cycle THz pulse is mostly governed by changes in the rotational constants, due to the similar dipole moments of the CH$_3$X molecules. The A&O dynamics is most sensitive to the $B$ rotational constant: even the difference between its equilibrium and vibrationally-averaged values results in noticeably different A&O dynamics. The contribution of rotational states having different symmetry, weighted by nuclear-spin statistics, to the A&O dynamics is also studied.

The rovibrational Aharonov-Bohm effect

Another manifestation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect is introduced to chemistry, in fact to nuclear dynamics and high-resolution molecular spectroscopy. As demonstrated, the overall rotation of a symmetric-top molecule influences the dynamics of an internal vibrational motion in a way that is analogous to the presence of a solenoid carrying magnetic flux. To a good approximation, the low-energy rovibrational energy-level structure of the quasistructural molecular ion H5+ can be understood entirely in terms of this effect.

Exactly solvable 1D model explains the low-energy vibrational level structure of protonated methane

A new one-dimensional model is proposed for the low-energy vibrational quantum dynamics of CH5+ based on the motion of an effective particle confined to a 60-vertex graph $Γ_{60}$ with a single edge length parameter. Within this model, the quantum states of CH5+ are obtained in analytic form and are related to combinatorial properties of $Γ_{60}$. The bipartite structure of $Γ_{60}$ gives a simple explanation for curious symmetries observed in numerically exact variational calculations on CH5+.

An improved rovibrational linelist of formaldehyde, \spec{h212c16o}

Published high-resolution rotation-vibration transitions of \spec{h212c16o}, the principal isotopologue of methanal, are analyzed using the MARVEL (Measured Active Rotation-Vibration Energy Levels) procedure. The literature results are augmented by new, high-accuracy measurements of pure rotational transitions within the ground, $ν_3$, $ν_4$, and $ν_6$ vibrational states. Of the \nbNonRedTr\ non-redundant transitions processed, which come from \nbSr\ sources including the present work, \nbValTr\ could be validated, providing \nbEl\ empirical energy levels of \spec{h212c16o}\ with statistically well-defined uncertainties. All the empirical rotational-vibrational energy levels determined are used to improve the accuracy of ExoMol's AYTY line list for hot formaldehyde. The complete list of collated experimental transitions, the empirical energy levels determined, as well as the extended and improved line list are provided as Supplementary Material.

Rovibronic spectra of molecules dressed by light fields

The theory of rovibronic spectroscopy of light-dressed molecules is presented within the framework of quantum mechanically treated molecules interacting with classical light fields. Numerical applications are demonstrated for the homonuclear diatomic molecule Na$_2$, for which the general formulae can be simplified considerably and the physical processes leading to the light-dressed spectra can be understood straightforwardly. The physical origin of different peaks in the light-dressed spectrum of Na$_2$ is given and the light-dressed spectrum is investigated in terms of its dependence on the dressing field's intensity and wavelength, the turn-on time of the dressing field, and the temperature. The important implications of light-dressed spectroscopy on deriving field-free spectroscopic quantities are also discussed.

MARVEL analysis of the measured high-resolution spectra of $^{14}$NH

Rovibronic energy levels are determined for four low-lying electronic states (\X, \A, \Sa, and \Sc) of the imidogen free radical ($^{14}$NH) using the \Marvel\ (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) technique. Compilation of transitions from both laboratory measurements and solar spectra, found in 18 publications, yields a dataset of 3002 rovibronic transitions forming elements of a measured spectroscopic network (SN). At the end of the MARVEL procedure, the majority of the transitions form a single, self-consistent SN component of 2954 rovibronic transitions and 1058 energy levels, \NoX, \NoA, and \Noc\ for the \X, \A, and \Sc\ electronic states, respectively. The \Sa\ electronic state is characterized by \Noa\ $Λ$-doublet levels, counting each level only once. Electronic structure computations show that unusually the CCSD(T) method does not accurately predict the \Sa\ excitation energy even at the complete basis set limit.

Marvel analysis of the measured high-resolution rovibrational spectra of H2S

44325 measured and assigned transitions of H$_2^{32}$S, the parent isotopologue of the hydrogen sulfide molecule, are collated from 33 publications into a single database and reviewed critically. Based on this information, rotation-vibration energy levels are determined for the ground electronic state using the Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels (MARVEL) technique. The ortho and para principal components of the measured spectroscopic network of H$_2^{32}$S are considered separately. The verified set of 25293 ortho- and 18778 para- H$_2^{32}$S transitions determine 3969 ortho and 3467 para energy levels. The Marvel results are compared with alternative data compilations, including a theoretical variational linelist.

Rovibrational quantum dynamical computations for deuterated isotopologues of the methane-water dimer

Rovibrational states of the four dimers formed by the light and the heavy isotopologues of the methane and the water molecules are computed using a potential energy surface taken from the literature. The general rovibrational energy-level pattern characteristic to all systems studied is analyzed employing two models of a dimer: the rigidly rotating complex and the coupled system of two rigidly rotating monomers. The rigid-rotor model highlights the presence of rovibrational sequences corresponding to formally negative rotational excitation energies, which is explained in terms of the coupled-rotors picture.

Definitive ideal-gas thermochemical functions of the H$_2$$^{16}$O molecule

$Q_{\rm int}$($T$), of the H$_2$$^{16}$O molecule is reported for temperatures between 0 and 6000 K. Determination of $Q_{\rm int}$($T$) is principally based on the direct summation technique involving all accurate experimental energy levels known for H$_2$$^{16}$O (almost 20~000 rovibrational energies including an almost complete list up to a relative energy of 7500 \cm), augmented with a less accurate but complete list of first-principles computed rovibrational energy levels up to the first dissociation limit, about 41~000 \cm\ (the latter list includes close to one million bound rovibrational energy levels up to $J = 69$, where $J$ is the rotational quantum number). Partition functions are developed for {\it ortho}- and {\it para}-H$_2$$^{16}$O as well as for their equilibrium mixture. Unbound rovibrational states above the first dissociation limit are considered using an approximate model treatment. The effect of the excited electronic states on the thermochemical functions is neglected, as their contribution to the thermochemical functions is negligible even at the highest temperatures considered. Based on the high-accuracy $Q_{\rm int}$($T$) and its first two moments, definitive results, in 1~K increments, are obtained for the following thermochemical functions: Gibbs energy, standardized enthalpy, entropy, and isobaric heat capacity. Reliable approximately two standard deviation uncertainties, as a function of temperature, are estimated for each quantity determined. These uncertainties emphasize that the present results are the most accurate ideal-gas thermochemical functions ever produced for H$_2$$^{16}$O. It is recommended that the new value determined for the standard molar enthalpy increment at 298.15~K, $9.90404 \pm 0.00001$ kJ~mol$^{-1}$, should replace the old CODATA datum, $9.905 \pm 0.005$ kJ~mol$^{-1}$.
