Viscoelastic Properties of Dynamically Asymmetric Binary Fluids Under Shear Flow

We study theoretically the viscoelastic properties of sheared binary fluids that have strong dynamical asymmetry between the two components. The dynamical asymmetry arises due to asymmetry between the viscoelastic stresses, particularly the bulk stress. Our calculations are based on the two-fluid model that incorporates the asymmetric stress distribution. We simulate the phase separation process under an externally imposed shear and compare the asymmetric case with the usual phase separation under a shear flow without viscoelastic effects. We also simulate the behavior of phase separated stable morphologies under applied shear and compute the stress relaxation.

Self-Dual Bending Theory for Vesicles

We present a self-dual bending theory that may enable a better understanding of highly nonlinear global behavior observed in biological vesicles. Adopting this topological approach for spherical vesicles of revolution allows us to describe them as frustrated sine-Gordon kinks. Finally, to illustrate an application of our results, we consider a spherical vesicle globally distorted by two polar latex beads.

Landau Theory For Shape Memory Polycrystals

We propose a Ginzburg-Landau theory for the elastic properties of shape memory polycrystals. A single crystal elastic free energy for a system that undergoes a square-to-rectangle transformation is generalized to a polycrystal by introducing a crystal orientational field that is determined from a continuum phase field model. The coupled system is used to study domain morphology and mechanical properties of shape memory alloys in different temperature regimes.

Electromechanical Properties of Multi-Domain Ferroelectrics

We study theoretically the influence of the underlying domain microstructure on the electromechanical properties of ferroelectrics. Our calculations are based on a continuum approach that incorporates the long-range elastic and electrostatic interactions. The theory is used to simulate the piezoelectric properties of a two dimensional model ferroelectric crystal. Simulation results indicate that the electromechanical response of the ferroelectric is strongly dependent on the domain microsctructure, including domain walls. This is particularly true for the case when an electric field is applied along a non-polar direction.

Magnetic-field dependence of electron spin relaxation in n-type semiconductors

We present a theoretical investigation of the magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal ($T_1$) and transverse ($T_2$) spin relaxation times of conduction band electrons in n-type III-V semiconductors. In particular, we find that the interplay between the Dyakonov-Perel process and an additional spin relaxation channel, which originates from the electron wave vector dependence of the electron $g$-factor, yields a maximal $T_2$ at a finite magnetic field. We compare our results with existing experimental data on n-type GaAs and make specific additional predictions for the magnetic field dependence of electron spin lifetimes.

Elastic Deformation of Polycrystals

We propose a framework to model elastic properties of polycrystals by coupling crystal orientational degrees of freedom with elastic strains. Our model encodes crystal symmetries and takes into account explicitly the strain compatibility induced long-range interaction between grains. The coupling of crystal orientation and elastic interactions allows for the rotation of individual grains by an external load. We apply the model to simulate uniaxial tensile loading of a 2D polycrystal within linear elasticity and a system with elastic anharmonicities that describe structural phase transformations. We investigate the constitutive response of the polycrystal and compare it to that of single crystals with crystallographic orientations that form the polycrystal.

Glassy behavior in systems with Kac-type step-function interaction

We study a system with a weak, long-range repulsive Kac-type step-function interaction within the framework of a replicated effective $ϕ^4$-theory. The occurrence of extensive configurational entropy, or an exponentially large number of metastable minima in the free energy (characteristic of a glassy state), is demonstrated. The underlying mechanism of mesoscopic patterning and defect organizations is discussed.

Interaction of a Discrete Breather with a Lattice Junction

We study the scattering of a moving discrete breather (DB) on a junction in a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain consisting of two segments with different masses of the particles. We consider four distinct cases: (i) a light-heavy (abrupt) junction in which the DB impinges on the junction from the segment with lighter mass, (ii) a heavy-light junction, (iii) an up mass-ramp in which the mass in the heavier segment increases continuously as one moves away from the junction point, and (iv) a down mass-ramp. Depending on the mass difference and DB characteristics (frequency and velocity), the DB can either reflect from, or transmit through, or get trapped at the junction or on the ramp. For the heavy-light junction, the DB can even split at the junction into a reflected and a transmitted DB. The latter is found to subsequently split into two or more DBs. For the down mass-ramp the DB gets accelerated in several stages, with accompanying radiation (phonons). These results are rationalized by calculating the Peierls-Nabarro barrier for the various cases. We also point out implications of our results in realistic situations such as electron-phonon coupled chains.

Phase transition induced hydrodynamic instability and Langmuir-Blodgett Deposition

We propose a model to understand periodic oscillations relevant to the origin of mesoscopic channels formed during a Langmuir-Blodgett deposition observed in recent experiments \{M. Gleiche, L.F. Chi, and H. Fuchs, Nature {\bf 403}, 173 (2000)\}. We numerically study one-dimensional flow of a van der Waals fluid near its discontinuous liquid-gas transition and find that steady-state flow becomes unstable in the vicinity of the phase transition. Instabilities leading to complex periodic density-oscillations are demonstrated at some suitably chosen sets of parameters.

Bogomol'nyi Decomposition for Vesicles of Arbitrary Genus

We apply the Bogomol'nyi technique, which is usually invoked in the study of solitons or models with topological invariants, to the case of elastic energy of vesicles. We show that spontaneous bending contribution caused by any deformation from metastable bending shapes falls in two distinct topological sets: shapes of spherical topology and shapes of non-spherical topology experience respectively a deviatoric bending contribution a la Fischer and a mean curvature bending contribution a la Helfrich. In other words, topology may be considered to describe bending phenomena. Besides, we calculate the bending energy per genus and the bending closure energy regardless of the shape of the vesicle. As an illustration we briefly consider geometrical frustration phenomena experienced by magnetically coated vesicles.

Heisenberg Spins on a Cylinder Section

Classical Heisenberg spins in the continuum limit (i.e. the nonlinear sigma-model) are studied on an elastic cylinder section with homogeneous boundary conditions. The latter may serve as a physical realization of magnetically coated microtubules and cylindrical membranes. The corresponding rigid cylinder model exhibits topological soliton configurations with geometrical frustration due to the finite length of the cylinder section. Assuming small and smooth deformations allows to find shapes of the elastic support by relaxing the rigidity constraint: an inhomogeneous Lamé equation arises. Finally, this leads to a novel geometric effect: a global shrinking of the cylinder section with swellings.

Statistical Mechanics of Double sinh-Gordon Kinks

We study the classical thermodynamics of the double sinh-Gordon (DSHG) theory in 1+1 dimensions. This model theory has a double well potential, thus allowing for the existence of kinks and antikinks. Though it is nonintegrable, the DSHG model is remarkably amenable to analysis. Below we obtain exact single kink and kink lattice solutions as well as the asymptotic kink-antikink interaction. In the continuum limit, finding the classical partition function is equivalent to solving for the ground state of a Schrodinger-like equation obtained via the transfer integral method. For the DSHG model, this equation turns out to be quasi-exactly solvable. We exploit this property to obtain exact energy eigenvalues and wavefunctions for several temperatures both above and below the symmetry breaking transition temperature. The availability of exact results provides an excellent testing ground for large scale Langevin simulations. The probability distribution function (PDF) calculated from Langevin dynamics is found to be in striking agreement with the exact PDF obtained from the ground state wavefunction. This validation points to the utility of a PDF-based computation of thermodynamics utilizing Langevin methods. In addition to the PDF, field-field and field fluctuation correlation functions were computed and also found to be in excellent agreement with the exact results.

Exact Thermodynamics of the Double sinh-Gordon Theory in 1+1-Dimensions

We study the classical thermodynamics of a 1+1-dimensional double-well sinh-Gordon theory. Remarkably, the Schrodinger-like equation resulting from the transfer integral method is quasi-exactly solvable at several temperatures. This allows exact calculation of the partition function and some correlation functions above and below the short-range order (``kink'') transition, in striking agreement with high resolution Langevin simulations. Interesting connections with the Landau-Ginzburg and double sine-Gordon models are also established.

Statistical Mechanics of Nonlinear Coherent Structures: Kinks in the Phi^6 Model

We study the thermodynamics of kinks in the Phi^6 model using a Langevin code implemented on a massively parallel computer. This code can be used to study first order dynamical phase transitions which exhibit multiple length and time scales. The classical statistical mechanics of a 1+1-dimensional field theory reduces to a time-independent quantum problem in one dimension via the transfer integral method. Exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation exist for the Phi^6 potential (unlike the case for Phi^4) and can be used to check results from the simulations. The Phi^6 model is also much richer than the Phi^4 model in terms of the variety of coherent structures and possible phases accompanying a phase transition. Specifically, we have calculated (in a one dimensional model) such quantities as the probability density function (PDF) and field-field correlation functions. These quantities help us understand the contribution to the specific heat from coherent structures such as domain walls (kinks) and other transformation structures as opposed to the contribution from lattice vibrations. We have calibrated our results against known exact solutions for limiting cases with very high accuracy. Having understood this problem, we are now extending our Langevin code to higher dimensions.
