Phenomenological aspects of composite Higgs scenarios: exotic scalars and vector-like quarks

Composite Higgs models usually contain additional pseudo Nambu Goldstone bosons and vector-like quarks. We discuss various aspects related to their LHC phenomenology and provide summary plots of exclusion limits using currently available information. We also describe a general parametrisation implemented in a software for Monte Carlo simulations and study the SU(5)/SO(5) scenario as a concrete example.

Modelling vector-like quarks in partial compositeness framework

Composite Higgs models, together with partial compositeness, predict the existence of new scalars and vector-like quarks (partners) at and above the TeV scale. Generically, the presence of these additional scalars opens up new decay topologies for the partners. In this paper we show how to systematically construct the general low energy Lagrangian to capture this feature. We emphasize the specific pattern in the top-partner spectrum arising in this class of models. We then present a concrete realization in the context of the SU(5)/SO(5) coset. We show that the top-partners in this model can have significant branching ratios to the additional scalars and a third generation quark, compared to the usual Standard Model channels. Amongst the most promising signatures at the LHC are final states containing a diphoton resonance along with a top quark.

Erasure tolerant quantum memory and the quantum null energy condition in holographic systems

Investigating principles for storage of quantum information at finite temperature with minimal need for active error correction is an active area of research. We bear upon this question in two-dimensional holographic conformal field theories via the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) that we have shown earlier to implement the restrictions imposed by quantum thermodynamics on such many-body systems. We study an explicit encoding of a logical qubit into two similar chirally propagating excitations of finite von-Neumann entropy on a finite temperature background whose erasure can be implemented by an appropriate inhomogeneous and instantaneous energy-momentum inflow from an infinite energy memoryless bath due to which the system transits to a thermal state. Holographically, these fast erasure processes can be depicted by generalized AdS-Vaidya geometries described previously in which no assumption of specific form of bulk matter is needed. We show that the quantum null energy condition gives analytic results for the minimal finite temperature needed for the deletion which is larger than the initial background temperature in consistency with Landauer's principle. In particular, we find a simple expression for the minimum final temperature needed for the erasure of a large number of encoding qubits. We also find that if the encoding qubits are localized over an interval shorter than a specific localization length, then the fast erasure process is impossible, and furthermore this localization length is the largest for an optimal amount of encoding qubits determined by the central charge. We estimate the optimal encoding qubits for realistic protection against fast erasure. We discuss possible generalizations of our study for novel constructions of fault-tolerant quantum gates operating at finite temperature.

Probing composite Higgs boson substructure at the HL-LHC

The Higgs boson may well be a composite scalar with a finite extension in space. Owing to the momentum dependence of its couplings the imprints of such a composite pseudo Goldstone Higgs may show up in the tails of various kinematic distributions at the LHC, distinguishing it from an elementary state. From the bottom up we construct the momentum dependent form factors to capture the interactions of the composite Higgs with the weak gauge bosons. We demonstrate their impact in the differential distributions of various kinematic parameters for the $pp\rightarrow Z^*H\rightarrow l^+l^-b\bar{b}$ channel. We show that this channel can provide an important handle to probe the Higgs' substructure at the HL-LHC.

HEE and HSC for flavors: perturbative structure in open string geometries

Introduction of electric field in the D-brane worldvolume induces a horizon in the open string geometry perceived by the brane fluctuations. We study the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and subregion complexity (HSC) in these asymptotically AdS geometries in three, four and five dimensions aiming to capture these quantities in the flavor sector introduced by the D-branes. Both the strip and spherical subregions have been considered. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy associated with the open string horizon, which earlier failed to reproduce the thermal entropy in the boundary, now precisely matches with the entanglement entropy at high temperatures. We check the validity of embedding function theorem while computing the HEE and attempt to reproduce the first law of entanglement thermodynamics, at least at leading order. On the basis of obtained results, we also reflect upon consequences of applying Ryu-Takayanagi proposal on these non-Einstein geometries.

Probing the Higgs boson through Yukawa force

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations of the LHC have observed that the Higgs boson decays into the bottom quark-antiquark pair, and have also established that the Higgs coupling with the top quark-antiquark pair is instrumental in one of the modes for Higgs production. This underlines the discovery of the Yukawa force at the LHC. We demonstrate the impact of this discovery on the Higgs properties that are related to the dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that these measurements have considerably squeezed the allowed window for new physics contributing to the Higgs couplings with the weak gauge bosons and the third generation quarks. The expected constraints at the HL-LHC and future Higgs factories are also shown. We project these constraints on the parameter space of a few motivated scenarios beyond the Standard Model. We pick them under two broad categories, namely, the composite Higgs and its RS dual, as well as various types of multi-Higgs models. The latter category includes models with singlet scalars, Type I, II and BGL-type two-Higgs doublet models, and models with scalar triplets a la Georgi and Machacek.

SO(10) unification with horizontal symmetry

We extend the nonsupersymmetric SO(10) grand unification theories by adding a horizontal symmetry, which connects the three generations of fermions. Without committing to any specific symmetry group, we investigate the 1-loop renormalization group evolutions of the gauge couplings with one and two intermediate breaking scales. We find that depending on the SO(10) breaking chains, gauge coupling unification is compatible with only a handful of choices of representations of the Higgs bosons under the horizontal symmetry.

Rotating Black Holes in AdS, Extremality and Chaos

Extremal black holes have vanishing Hawking temperatures. In this article, we argue that for asymptotically AdS black holes, at extremality, a particular class of correlators in the dual CFT can exhibit exponential, maximally chaotic growth with a non-vanishing temperature. Our approach, at extremality, is two-fold. First, we geometrically investigate the modes that are responsible for chaos. Secondly, we study the dynamics of a probe string to capture chaos in worldsheet correlators. For rotating BTZ at extremality, the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is determined by the left-moving temperature. In higher dimensional AdS-Kerr geometries, on the other hand, the corresponding Lyapunov exponent becomes a non-trivial function of the Frolov-Thorne temperatures.

Dark matter seeping through dynamic gauge kinetic mixing

We show for the first time that the loop-driven kinetic mixing between visible and dark Abelian gauge bosons can facilitate dark matter production in the early Universe by creating a 'dynamic' portal, which depends on the energy of the process. The required smallness of the strength of the portal interaction, suited for freeze-in, is justified by a suppression arising from the mass of a heavy vector-like fermion. The strong temperature sensitivity associated with the interaction is responsible for most of the dark matter production during the early stages of reheating.

Impact of Yukawa-like dimension-5 operators on the Georgi-Machacek model

We study the effects of including Yukawa-like dimension-5 operators in the Georgi-Machacek model where the Standard Model is augmented with triplet scalars. We focus only on the charged Higgs sector and investigate the constraints arising from radiative B-meson decays, neutral B-meson mixing and precision measurement of Zbb vertex. We observe that the inclusion of the dimension-5 operators causes substantial alteration of the limits on the charged Higgs masses and the vacuum expectation value of the triplets, derived otherwise using only the dimension-4 operators.

Clockworked VEVs and Neutrino Mass

In this paper we present an augmented version of the Abelian scalar clockwork model to generate geometrically suppressed vacuum expectation values (vev) of the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons, that we call the clockworked vevs. We briefly comment on generalization of the setup and possible 5D UV realizations. We demonstrate how tiny neutrino mass can be generated by clockworking a weak scale vev.

Maximal Chaos from Strings, Branes and Schwarzian Action

In this article, we explicitly demonstrate that, for a sufficiently generic class of examples, an open string embedded in an AdS-background yields an effective Schwarzian action and, in the semi-classical description, the fluctuation modes of the open string couple to this Schwarzian sector. This leads to a maximal chaos, observed in the open string degrees of freedom, irrespective of the gravitational background. This corresponds to the dynamics of quark-like degrees of freedom in a strongly coupled large N_c gauge theory. We also demonstrate a maximal chaos, resulting from an inherent D-brane horizon, by computing the four-point out-of-time-ordered correlator of spin-one operators. We also offer some observations and comments regarding a class of effective theories that is described by a generic functional of a Schwarzian derivative.

Strings, Branes, Schwarzian Action and Maximal Chaos

In this article, we present explicit evidence that maximal chaos occurs for a generic, probe quark-like defect degrees of freedom, in a strongly coupled large $N_c$ gauge theory. In holography, this corresponds to the dynamics of open string degrees of freedom, in the background of a closed string geometry. In this context, we explicitly show that a Schwarzian effective action for the soft sector emerges and couples with other modes, in the infra-red. This is manifest on an open string worldsheet, as well as a D$1$-brane world-volume, embedded in AdS$_3$. The corresponding maximal chaos is governed by an intrinsic defect D-brane horizon, and an intrinsic non-linear description of the brane or the string. We also present explicit evidence of maximal chaos away from extremality on a D-brane horizon, by computing a four-point out-of-time order correlator of spin-one operators. This further suggests that a similar description of the soft sector physics of open string degrees of freedom may exist in general.

Constraining Composite Higgs Models using LHC data

We systematically study the modifications in the couplings of the Higgs boson, when identified as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of a strong sector, in the light of LHC Run 1 and Run 2 data. For the minimal coset SO(5)/SO(4) of the strong sector, we focus on scenarios where the standard model left- and right-handed fermions (specifically, the top and bottom quarks) are either in 5 or in the symmetric 14 representation of SO(5). Going beyond the minimal 5L-5R representation, to what we call here the 'extended' models, we observe that it is possible to construct more than one invariant in the Yukawa sector. In such models, the Yukawa couplings of the 125 GeV Higgs boson undergo nontrivial modifications. The pattern of such modifications can be encoded in a generic phenomenological Lagrangian which applies to a wide class of such models. We show that the presence of more than one Yukawa invariant allows the gauge and Yukawa coupling modifiers to be decorrelated in the 'extended' models, and this decorrelation leads to a relaxation of the bound on the compositeness scale (f > 640 GeV at 95% CL, as compared to f > 1 TeV for the minimal 5L-5R representation model). We also study the Yukawa coupling modifications in the context of the next-to-minimal strong sector coset SO(6)/SO(5) for fermion-embedding up to representations of dimension 20. While quantifying our observations, we have performed a detailed chi-square fit using the ATLAS and CMS combined Run 1 and available Run 2 data.

Scale invariance with fundamental matters and anomaly: A holographic description

Generally, quantum field theories can be thought as deformations away from conformal field theories. In this article, with a simple bottom up model assumed to possess a holographic description, we study a putative large N quantum field theory with large and arbitrary number of adjoint and fundamental degrees of freedom and a non-vanishing chiral anomaly, in the presence of an external magnetic field and with a non-vanishing density. Motivated by the richness of quantum chromodynamics under similar condition, we explore the solution space to find an infinite class of scale-invariant, but not conformal, field theories that may play a pivotal role in defining the corresponding physics. In particular, we find two classes of geometries: Schrodinger isometric and warped AdS_3 geometries with an SL(2,R) X U(1) isometry. We find hints of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry, at low temperatures, around the warped backgrounds.

Improving Fine-tuning in Composite Higgs Models

In this paper we investigate the next-to-minimal composite Higgs model with a SO(6)/SO(5) coset, whose pNGB sector includes a Standard Model singlet in addition to the usual Higgs doublet. The fermions are embedded in the representation 6 of SO(6). We study the region of parameter space of the model where the radiatively generated potential has global minima with both the doublet and the singlet fields developing vacuum expectation values. We investigate the consequences of kinetic and mass mixing between the Higgs and the singlet scalar that arise in this framework. We demonstrate that the ensuing doublet-singlet mixing can provide a handle to accommodate heavier resonances (top-partners) for a given compositeness scale as compared to the minimal composite Higgs model, thus relaxing the tension with the direct LHC bounds. The main phenomenological consequence of this is a sizable deviation of the Higgs couplings from the Standard Model predictions. While the present experimental precision in the measurement of the Higgs couplings still allows for considerable release of this tension, future measurements of the Higgs branching ratios with increased precision would lead to stringent constraints on this setup.

Oscillating Shells and Oscillating Balls in AdS

It has recently been reported that certain thin timelike shells undergo oscillatory motion in AdS. In this paper, we compute two-point function of a probe field in the geodesic approximation in such an oscillating shell background. We confirm that the two-point function exhibits an oscillatory behaviour following the motion of the shell. We show that similar oscillatory dynamics is possible when the perfect fluid on the shell has a polytropic equation of state. Moreover, we show that certain ball like configurations in AdS also exhibit oscillatory motion and comment on how such a solution can be smoothly matched to an appropriate exterior solution. We also demonstrate that the weak energy condition is satisfied for these oscillatory configurations.

Emergent Horizons and Causal Structures in Holography

The open string metric arises kinematically in studying fluctuations of open string degrees of freedom on a D-brane. An observer, living on a probe D-brane, can send signals through the spacetime by using such fluctuations on the probe, that propagate in accordance with a metric which is conformal to the open string metric. Event horizons can emerge in the open string metric when one considers a D-brane with an electric field on its worldvolume. Here, we emphasize the role of and investigate, in details, the causal structure of the resulting open string event horizon and demonstrate, among other things, its close similarities to an usual black hole event horizon in asymptotically AdS-spaces. To that end, we analyze relevant geodesics, Penrose diagrams and various causal holographic observables for a given open string metric. For analytical control, most of our calculations are performed in an asymptotically AdS$_3$-background, however, we argue that the physics is qualitatively the same in higher dimensions. We also discuss how this open string metric arises from an underlying D-brane configuration in string theory.
