Domain Wall and Periodic Solutions of Coupled phi4 Models in an External Field

Coupled double well (phi4) one-dimensional potentials abound in both condensed matter physics and field theory. Here we provide an exhaustive set of exact periodic solutions of a coupled $ϕ^4$ model in an external field in terms of elliptic functions (domain wall arrays) and obtain single domain wall solutions in specific limits. We also calculate the energy and interaction between solitons for various solutions. Both topological and nontopological (e.g. some pulse-like solutions in the presence of a conjugate field) domain walls are obtained. We relate some of these solutions to the recently observed magnetic domain walls in certain multiferroic materials and also in the field theory context wherever possible. Discrete analogs of these coupled models, relevant for structural transitions on a lattice, are also considered.

Statistical Mechanics of Lamé Solitons

We study the exact statistical mechanics of Lamé solitons using a transfer matrix method. This requires a knowledge of the first forbidden band of the corresponding Schrödinger equation with the periodic Lamé potential. Since the latter is a quasi-exactly solvable system, an analytical evaluation of the partition function can be done only for a few temperatures. We also study approximately the finite temperature thermodynamics using the ideal kink gas phenomenology. The zero-temperature "thermodynamics" of the soliton lattice solutions is also addressed. Moreover, in appropriate limits our results reduce to that of the sine-Gordon problem.

Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations with arbitrarily high order nonlinearities

A class of discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations with arbitrarily high order nonlinearities is introduced. These equations are derived from the same Hamiltonian using different Poisson brackets and include as particular cases the saturable discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the Ablowitz-Ladik equation. As a common property, these equations possess three kinds of exact analytical stationary solutions for which the Peierls-Nabarro barrier is zero. Several properties of these solutions, including stability, discrete breathers and moving solutions, are investigated.

Complex Periodic Potentials with a Finite Number of Band Gaps

We obtain several new results for the complex generalized associated Lame potential V(x)= a(a+1)m sn^2(y,m)+ b(b+1)m sn^2(y+K(m),m) + f(f+1)m sn^2(y+K(m)+iK'(m),m)+ g(g+1)m sn^2(y+iK'(m),m), where y = x-K(m)/2-iK'(m)/2, sn(y,m) is a Jacobi elliptic function with modulus parameter m, and there are four real parameters a,b,f,g. First, we derive two new duality relations which, when coupled with a previously obtained duality relation, permit us to relate the band edge eigenstates of the 24 potentials obtained by permutations of the four parameters a,b,f,g. Second, we pose and answer the question: how many independent potentials are there with a finite number "a" of band gaps when a,b,f,g are integers? For these potentials, we clarify the nature of the band edge eigenfunctions. We also obtain several analytic results when at least one of the four parameters is a half-integer. As a by-product, we also obtain new solutions of Heun's differential equation.

Spectral correlations of individual quantum graphs

We investigate the spectral properties of chaotic quantum graphs. We demonstrate that the `energy'--average over the spectrum of individual graphs can be traded for the functional average over a supersymmetric non--linear $σ$--model action. This proves that spectral correlations of individual quantum graphs behave according to the predictions of Wigner--Dyson random matrix theory. We explore the stability of the universal random matrix behavior with regard to perturbations, and discuss the crossover between different types of symmetries.

Asymptotic Calculation of Discrete Nonlinear Wave Interactions

We illustrate how to compute asymptotic interactions between discrete solitary waves of dispersive equations, using the approach proposed by Manton [Nucl. Phys. B 150, 397 (1979)]. We also discuss the complications arising due to discreteness and showcase the application of the method in nonlinear Schrodinger, as well as in Klein-Gordon lattices, finding excellent agreement with direct numerical computations.

Quasi-Periodic Solutions of Heun's Equation

By exploiting a recently developed connection between Heun's differential equation and the generalized associated Lamé equation, we not only recover the well known periodic solutions, but also obtain a large class of new, quasi-periodic solutions of Heun's equation. Each of the quasi-periodic solutions is doubly degenerate.

PT-Invariant Periodic Potentials with a Finite Number of Band Gaps

We obtain the band edge eigenstates and the mid-band states for the complex, PT-invariant generalized associated Lamé potentials $V^{PT}(x)=-a(a+1)m \sn^2(y,m)-b(b+1)m {\sn^2 (y+K(m),m)} -f(f+1)m {\sn^2 (y+K(m)+iK'(m),m)}-g(g+1)m {\sn^2 (y+iK'(m),m)}$, where $y \equiv ix+β$, and there are four parameters $a,b,f,g$. This work is a substantial generalization of previous work with the associated Lamé potentials $V(x)=a(a+1)m\sn^2(x,m)+b(b+1)m{\sn^2 (x+K(m),m)}$ and their corresponding PT-invariant counterparts $V^{PT}(x)=-V(ix+β)$, both of which involving just two parameters $a,b$. We show that for many integer values of $a,b,f,g$, the PT-invariant potentials $V^{PT}(x)$ are periodic problems with a finite number of band gaps. Further, usingsupersymmetry, we construct several additional, new, complex, PT-invariant, periodic potentials with a finite number of band gaps. We also point out the intimate connection between the above generalized associated Lamé potential problem and Heun's differential equation.

Exact solitary wave solutions for a discrete $λϕ^4$ field theory in 1+1 dimensions

We have found exact, periodic, time-dependent solitary wave solutions of a discrete $ϕ^4$ field theory model. For finite lattices, depending on whether one is considering a repulsive or attractive case, the solutions are either Jacobi elliptic functions $\sn(x,m)$ (which reduce to the kink function $\tanh(x)$ for $m\to 1$), or they are $\dn(x,m)$ and $\cn(x,m)$ (which reduce to the pulse function $\sech(x)$ for $m\to 1$). We have studied the stability of these solutions numerically, and we find that our solutions are linearly stable in most cases. We show that this model is a Hamiltonian system, and that the effective Peierls-Nabarro barrier due to discreteness is zero not only for the two localized modes but even for all three periodic solutions. We also present results of numerical simulations of scattering of kink--anti-kink and pulse--anti-pulse solitary wave solutions.

On Some Classes of mKdV Periodic Solutions

We obtain exact periodic solutions of the positive and negative modified Kortweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations. We examine the dynamical stability of these solitary wave lattices through direct numerical simulations. While the positive mKdV breather lattice solutions are found to be unstable, the two-soliton lattice solution of the same equation is found to be stable. Similarly, a negative mKdV lattice solution is found to be stable. We also touch upon the implications of these results for the KdV equation.

Solitary Wave Interactions In Dispersive Equations Using Manton's Approach

We generalize the approach first proposed by Manton [Nuc. Phys. B {\bf 150}, 397 (1979)] to compute solitary wave interactions in translationally invariant, dispersive equations that support such localized solutions. The approach is illustrated using as examples solitons in the Korteweg-de Vries equation, standing waves in the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and kinks as well as breathers of the sine-Gordon equation.

Exact Solutions of the Saturable Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

Exact solutions to a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger lattice with a saturable nonlinearity are reported. For finite lattices we find two different standing-wave-like solutions, and for an infinite lattice we find a localized soliton-like solution. The existence requirements and stability of these solutions are discussed, and we find that our solutions are linearly stable in most cases. We also show that the effective Peierls-Nabarro barrier potential is nonzero thereby indicating that this discrete model is quite likely nonintegrable.

Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics

An elementary introduction is given to the subject of Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics. We demonstrate with explicit examples that given a solvable problem in quantum mechanics with n bound states, one can construct new exactly solvable n Hamiltonians having n-1,n-2,...,0 bound states. The relationship between the eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and scattering matrix of the supersymmetric partner potentials is derived and a class of reflectionless potentials are explicitly constructed. We extend the operator method of solving the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator problem to a class of potentials called shape invariant potentials. Further, we show that given any potential with at least one bound state, one can very easily construct one continuous parameter family of potentials having same eigenvalues and s-matrix. The supersymmetry inspired WKB approximation (SWKB) is also discussed and it is shown that unlike the usual WKB, the lowest order SWKB approximation is exact for the shape invariant potentials. Finally, we also construct new exactly solvable periodic potentials by using the machinery of supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

Cyclic Identities Involving Ratios of Jacobi Theta Functions

Identities involving cyclic sums of terms composed from Jacobi elliptic functions evaluated at $p$ equally shifted points were recently found. The purpose of this paper is to re-express these cyclic identities in terms of ratios of Jacobi theta functions, since many physicists prefer using Jacobi theta functions rather than Jacobi elliptic functions.

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics on Non-Commutative Plane

We study the Pauli equation on non-commutative plane. It is shown that the Supersymmetry algebra holds to all orders in the non-commutative parameter $θ$ in case the gyro-magnetic ratio $g$ is 2. Using Seiberg-Witten map, the first order in $θ$ correction to the spectrum is obtained in the case of uniform magnetic field. We find that the eigenstates in the non-commutative case are identical to the commutative case provided the magnetic field $B$ is everywhere replaced by $B(1+Bθ)$.

Periodic Potentials and Supersymmetry

We review the current status of one dimensional periodic potentials and also present several new results. It is shown that using the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, one can considerably enlarge the limited class of analytically solvable one-dimensional periodic potentials. Further, using the Landen transformations as well as cyclic identities for Jacobi elliptic functions discovered by us recently, it is shown that a linear superposition of Lamé (as well as associated Lamé) potentials are also analytically solvable. Finally, using anti-isospectral transformations, we also obtain a class of analytically solvable, complex, PT-invariant, periodic potentials having real band spectra.

Analytically Solvable PT-Invariant Periodic Potentials

Associated Lamé potentials $V(x)=a(a+1)m\sn^2(x,m)+b(b+1)m{\cn^2 (x,m)}/{\dn^2(x,m)}$ are used to construct complex, PT-invariant, periodic potentials using the anti-isospectral transformation $x \to ix+β$, where $β$ is any nonzero real number. These PT-invariant potentials are defined by $V^{PT}(x) \equiv -V(ix+β)$, and have a different real period from $V(x)$. They are analytically solvable potentials with a finite number of band gaps, when $a$ and $b$ are integers. Explicit expressions for the band edges of some of these potentials are given. For the special case of the complex potential $V^{PT}(x)=-2m\sn^2(ix+β,m)$, we also analytically obtain the dispersion relation. Additional new, solvable, complex, PT-invariant, periodic potentials are obtained by applying the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

Soliton Lattice and Single Soliton Solutions of the Associated Lamé and Lamé Potentials

We obtain the exact nontopological soliton lattice solutions of the Associated Lamé equation in different parameter regimes and compute the corresponding energy for each of these solutions. We show that in specific limits these solutions give rise to nontopological (pulse-like) single solitons, as well as to different types of topological (kink-like) single soliton solutions of the Associated Lamé equation. Following Manton, we also compute, as an illustration, the asymptotic interaction energy between these soliton solutions in one particular case. Finally, in specific limits, we deduce the soliton lattices, as well as the topological single soliton solutions of the Lamé equation, and also the sine-Gordon soliton solution.
