Generalized Landen Transformation Formulas for Jacobi Elliptic Functions

Landen transformation formulas, which connect Jacobi elliptic functions with different modulus parameters, were first obtained over two hundred years ago by changing integration variables in elliptic integrals. We rediscover known results as well as obtain more generalized Landen formulas from a very different perspective, by making use of the recently obtained periodic solutions of physically interesting nonlinear differential equations and numerous remarkable new cyclic identities involving Jacobi elliptic functions. We find that several of our Landen transformations have a rather different and substantially more elegant appearance compared to the forms usually found in the literature. Further, by making use of the cyclic identities discovered recently, we also obtain some entirely new sets of Landen transformations. This paper is an expanded and revised version of our previous paper math-ph/0204054.

Affine Toda-Sutherland Systems

A cross between two well-known integrable multi-particle dynamics, an affine Toda molecule and a Sutherland system, is introduced for any affine root system. Though it is not completely integrable but partially integrable, or quasi exactly solvable, it inherits many remarkable properties from the parents. The equilibrium position is algebraic, i.e. proportional to the Weyl vector. The frequencies of small oscillations near equilibrium are proportional to the affine Toda masses, which are essential ingredients of the exact factorisable S-matrices of affine Toda field theories. Some lower lying frequencies are integer times a coupling constant for which the corresponding exact quantum eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are obtained. An affine Toda-Calogero system, with a corresponding rational potential, is also discussed.

Breather lattice and its stabilization for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation

We obtain an exact solution for the breather lattice solution of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (MKdV) equation. Numerical simulation of the breather lattice demonstrates its instability due to the breather-breather interaction. However, such multi-breather structures can be stabilized through the concurrent application of ac driving and viscous damping terms.

Local Identities Involving Jacobi Elliptic Functions

We derive a number of local identities of arbitrary rank involving Jacobi elliptic functions and use them to obtain several new results. First, we present an alternative, simpler derivation of the cyclic identities discovered by us recently, along with an extension to several new cyclic identities of arbitrary rank. Second, we obtain a generalization to cyclic identities in which successive terms have a multiplicative phase factor exp(2iπ/s), where s is any integer. Third, we systematize the local identities by deriving four local ``master identities'' analogous to the master identities for the cyclic sums discussed by us previously. Fourth, we point out that many of the local identities can be thought of as exact discretizations of standard nonlinear differential equations satisfied by the Jacobian elliptic functions. Finally, we obtain explicit answers for a number of definite integrals and simpler forms for several indefinite integrals involving Jacobi elliptic functions.

Cyclic Identities Involving Jacobi Elliptic Functions. II

Identities involving cyclic sums of terms composed from Jacobi elliptic functions evaluated at $p$ equally shifted points on the real axis were recently found. These identities played a crucial role in discovering linear superposition solutions of a large number of important nonlinear equations. We derive four master identities, from which the identities discussed earlier are derivable as special cases. Master identities are also obtained which lead to cyclic identities with alternating signs. We discuss an extension of our results to pure imaginary and complex shifts as well as to the ratio of Jacobi theta functions.

Complex Optical Potentials and Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Recently some authors have broadened the scope of canonical quantum mechanics by replacing the conventional Hermiticity condition on the Hamiltonian by a weaker requirement through the introduction of the notion of pseudo-Hermiticity. In the present study we investigate eigenvalues, transmission and reflection from complex optical potentials enjoying the property of pseudo-Hermiticity.

Periodic Solutions of Nonlinear Equations Obtained by Linear Superposition

We show that a type of linear superposition principle works for several nonlinear differential equations. Using this approach, we find periodic solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation, the $λϕ^4$ model, the sine-Gordon equation and the Boussinesq equation by making appropriate linear superpositions of known periodic solutions. This unusual procedure for generating solutions is successful as a consequence of some powerful, recently discovered, cyclic identities satisfied by the Jacobi elliptic functions.

A Study of Quantum Many-Body Systems With Nearest And Next-to-Nearest Neighbour Long-Range Interactions

The scattering and bound states of the many-body systems, related to the short-range Dyson model, are studied. First, we show that the scattering states can be realized as coherent states and the scattering Hamiltonian can be connected to a free system. Unlike the closely related Calogero-Moser model, only a part of the partial waves acquire energy independent phase shifts, after scattering. The cause of the same is traced to the reduction in the degeneracies. The bound state Hamiltonian for the full-line problem is also studied and the relationship of its Hilbert space with that of the decoupled oscillators elucidated. Finally, we analyze the related models on circle and construct a part of the excitation spectrum through symmetry arguments.

A Generalization of Landen's Quadratic Transformation Formulas for Jacobi Elliptic Functions

Landen formulas, which connect Jacobi elliptic functions with different modulus parameters, were first obtained over two hundred years ago by making a suitable quadratic transformation of variables in elliptic integrals. We obtain and discuss significant generalizations of the celebrated Landen formulas. Our approach is based on some recently obtained periodic solutions of physically interesting nonlinear differential equations and numerous remarkable new cyclic identities involving Jacobi elliptic functions.

Cyclic Identities Involving Jacobi Elliptic Functions

We state and discuss numerous mathematical identities involving Jacobi elliptic functions sn(x,m), cn(x,m), dn(x,m), where m is the elliptic modulus parameter. In all identities, the arguments of the Jacobi functions are separated by either 2K(m)/p or 4K(m)/p, where p is an integer and K(m) is the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. Each p-point identity of rank r involves a cyclic homogeneous polynomial of degree r (in Jacobi elliptic functions with p equally spaced arguments) related to other cyclic homogeneous polynomials of degree r-2 or smaller. Identities corresponding to small values of p,r are readily established algebraically using standard properties of Jacobi elliptic functions, whereas identities with higher values of p,r are easily verified numerically using advanced mathematical software packages.

Linear Superposition in Nonlinear Equations

Even though the KdV and modified KdV equations are nonlinear, we show that suitable linear combinations of known periodic solutions involving Jacobi elliptic functions yield a large class of additional solutions. This procedure works by virtue of some remarkable new identities satisfied by the elliptic functions.

Born-Infeld Chern-Simons Theory: Hamiltonian Embedding, Duality and Bosonization

In this paper we study in detail the equivalence of the recently introduced Born-Infeld self dual model to the Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons model in 2+1 dimensions. We first apply the improved Batalin, Fradkin and Tyutin scheme, to embed the Born-Infeld Self dual model to a gauge system and show that the embedded model is equivalent to Abelian Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory. Next, using Buscher's duality procedure, we demonstrate this equivalence in a covariant Lagrangian formulation and also derive the mapping between the n-point correlators of the (dual) field strength in Born-Infeld Chern-Simons theory and of basic field in Born-Infeld Self dual model. Using this equivalence, the bosonization of a massive Dirac theory with a non-polynomial Thirring type current-current coupling, to leading order in (inverse) fermion mass is also discussed. We also re-derive it using a master Lagrangian. Finally, the operator equivalence between the fermionic current and (dual) field strength of Born-Infeld Chern-Simons theory is deduced at the level of correlators and using this the current-current commutators are obtained.

A QES Band-Structure Problem in One Dimension

I show that the potential $$V(x,m) = \big [\frac{b^2}{4}-m(1-m)a(a+1) \big ]\frac{\sn^2 (x,m)}{\dn^2 (x,m)} -b(a+{1/2}) \frac{\cn (x,m)}{\dn^2 (x,m)}$$ constitutes a QES band-structure problem in one dimension. In particular, I show that for any positive integral or half-integral $a$, $2a+1$ band edge eigenvalues and eigenfunctions can be obtained analytically. In the limit of m going to 0 or 1, I recover the well known results for the QES double sine-Gordon or double sinh-Gordon equations respectively. As a by product, I also obtain the boundstate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the potential $$V(x) = \big [\frac{β^2}{4}-a(a+1) \big ] \sech^2 x +β(a+{1/2})\sech x\tanh x$$ in case $a$ is any positive integer or half-integer.

Quantum Expression of Classical Chaos

Even as we understand for long that the world is quantal and buried in it is classical dynamics which is chaotic, finding eigenfunctions analytically from the the Schroedinger equation has turned out to be a near-impossibility. Here, we discover a class of chaotic quantum systems for which we obtain some analytically exact eigenfunctions in closed form. This paves way to an exact classical and quantum mechanical treatment of chaotic systems. Furthermore, we bring out connections, underlying the discovery, between different areas of physics and mathematics related to universality in fluctuations observed in a wide variety of complex quantum systems.

Testing Hall-Post Inequalities With Exactly Solvable N-Body Problems

The Hall--Post inequalities provide lower bounds on $N$-body energies in terms of $N'$-body energies with $N'<N$. They are rewritten and generalized to be tested with exactly-solvable models of Calogero-Sutherland type in one and higher dimensions. The bound for $N$ spinless fermions in one dimension is better saturated at large coupling than for noninteracting fermions in an oscillator

Some Exact Results for Mid-Band and Zero Band-Gap States of Associated Lame Potentials

Applying certain known theorems about one-dimensional periodic potentials, we show that the energy spectrum of the associated Lamé potentials $$a(a+1)m~{\rm sn}^2(x,m)+b(b+1)m~{\rm cn}^2(x,m)/{\rm dn}^2(x,m)$$ consists of a finite number of bound bands followed by a continuum band when both $a$ and $b$ take integer values. Further, if $a$ and $b$ are unequal integers, we show that there must exist some zero band-gap states, i.e. doubly degenerate states with the same number of nodes. More generally, in case $a$ and $b$ are not integers, but either $a + b$ or $a - b$ is an integer ($a \ne b$), we again show that several of the band-gaps vanish due to degeneracy of states with the same number of nodes. Finally, when either $a$ or $b$ is an integer and the other takes a half-integral value, we obtain exact analytic solutions for several mid-band states.

Solitons in 2+1 Dimensional Non-Commutative Maxwell Chern-Simons Higgs Theories

We find soliton solutions in the 2+1 dimensional non-commutative Maxwell Chern-Simons Higgs theories. In the limit of the Chern-Simons coefficient going to zero, these solutions go over to the previously found solutions in the non-commutative Maxwell Higgs theories. The new solutions may have relevance in the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect and possibly in string vacua corresponding to open strings terminating on D2 branes in the presence of D0 branes.

Self-Duality of a Topologically Massive Born-Infeld Theory

We consider self-duality in a 2+1 dimensional gauge theory containing both the Born-Infeld and the Chern-Simons terms. We introduce a Born-Infeld inspired generalization of the Proca term and show that the corresponding self dual equation is identical to that of the Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory.
