PT invariant Non-Hermitian Potentials with Real QES Eigenvalues

We show that at least the quasi-exactly solvable eigenvalues of the Schrödinger equation with the potential $V(x) = -(ζ\cosh 2x -iM)^2$ as well as the periodic potential $V(x) = (ζ\cos 2θ-iM)^2$ are real for the PT-invariant non-Hermitian potentials in case the parameter $M$ is any odd integer. We further show that the norm as well as the weight functions for the corresponding weak orthogonal polynomials are also real.

Stability of Compacton Solutions of Fifth-Order Nonlinear Dispersive Equations

We consider fifth-order nonlinear dispersive $K(m,n,p)$ type equations to study the effect of nonlinear dispersion. Using simple scaling arguments we show, how, instead of the conventional solitary waves like solitons, the interaction of the nonlinear dispersion with nonlinear convection generates compactons - the compact solitary waves free of exponential tails. This interaction also generates many other solitary wave structures like cuspons, peakons, tipons etc. which are otherwise unattainable with linear dispersion. Various self similar solutions of these higher order nonlinear dispersive equations are also obtained using similarity transformations. Further, it is shown that, like the third-order nonlinear $K(m,n)$ equations, the fifth-order nonlinear dispersive equations also have the same four conserved quantities and further even any arbitrary odd order nonlinear dispersive $K(m,n,p...)$ type equations also have the same three (and most likely the four) conserved quantities. Finally, the stability of the compacton solutions for the fifth-order nonlinear dispersive equations are studied using linear stability analysis. From the results of the linear stability analysis it follows that, unlike solitons, all the allowed compacton solutions are stable, since the stability conditions are satisfied for arbitrary values of the nonlinear parameters.

A PT-Invariant Potential With Complex QES Eigenvalues

We show that the quasi-exactly solvable eigenvalues of the Schrödinger equation for the PT-invariant potential $V(x) = -(ζ\cosh 2x -iM)^2$ are complex conjugate pairs in case the parameter M is an even integer while they are real in case M is an odd integer. We also show that whereas the PT symmetry is spontaneously broken in the former case, it is unbroken in the latter case.

A class of N-body problems with nearest- and next-to-nearest neighbour interactions

We obtain the exact ground state and a part of the excitation spectrum in one dimension on a line and the exact ground state on a circle in a case where N particles are interacting via nearest- and next-to-nearest neighbour interactions. Further, using the exact ground-state, we establish a mapping between these N-body problems and the short-range Dyson models introduced recently to model intermediate spectral statistics. Using this mapping we compute the one- and two-point functions of a related many-body theory and show that there is no long-range order in the thermodynamic limit. However, quite remarkably, we prove the existence of an off-diagonal long-range order in the symmetrised version of the related many-body theory. Generalisation of the models to other root systems is also considered. Besides, we also generalize the model on the full line to higher dimensions. Finally, we consider a model in two dimensions in which all the states exhibit novel correlations.

The November $J/Ψ$ Revolution: Twenty-Five Years Later

Exactly twenty five years ago the world of high energy physics was set on fire by the discovery of a new particle with an unusually narrow width at 3095 MeV, known popularly as the $J/Ψ$ revolution. This discovery was very decisive in our understanding as well as formulating the current picture regarding the basic constituents of nature. I look back at the discovery, pointing out how unexpected, dramatic and significant it was.

Fractional Statistics and Chern-Simons Field Theory in 2+1 Dimensions

The question of anyons and fractional statistics in field theories in 2+1 dimensions with Chern-Simons (CS) term is discussed in some detail. Arguments are spelled out as to why fractional statistics is only possible in two space dimensions. This phenomenon is most naturally discussed within the framework of field theories with CS term, hence as a prelude to this discussion I first discuss the various properties of the CS term. In particular its role as a gauge field mass term is emphasized. In the presence of the CS term, anyons can appear in two different ways i.e. either as soliton of the corresponding field theory or as a fundamental quanta carrying fractional statistics and both approaches are elaborated in some detail.

New Solvable and Quasi Exactly Solvable Periodic Potentials

Using the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we obtain a large number of new analytically solvable one-dimensional periodic potentials and study their properties. More specifically, the supersymmetric partners of the Lame potentials ma(a+1)sn^2(x,m) are computed for integer values a=1,2,3,.... For all cases (except a=1), we show that the partner potential is distinctly different from the original Lame potential, even though they both have the same energy band structure. We also derive and discuss the energy band edges of the associated Lame potentials pm sn^2(x,m)+qm cn^2(x,m)/ dn^2(x,m), which constitute a much richer class of periodic problems. Computation of their supersymmetric partners yields many additional new solvable and quasi exactly solvable periodic potentials.

Classical and quantum mechanics of a particle on a rotating loop

The toy model of a particle on a vertical rotating circle in the presence of uniform gravitational/ magnetic fields is explored in detail. After an analysis of the classical mechanics of the problem we then discuss the quantum mechanics from both exact and semi--classical standpoints. Exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation are obtained in some cases by diverse methods. Instantons, bounces are constructed and semi-classical, leading order tunneling amplitudes/decay rates are written down. We also investigate qualitatively the nature of small oscillations about the kink/bounce solutions. Finally, the connections of these toy examples with field theoretic and statistical mechanical models of relevance are pointed out.

An exactly solvable many-body problem in one dimension

For N impenetrable particles in one dimension where only the nearest and next-to-nearest neighbours interact, we obtain the complete spectrum both on a line and on a circle. Further, we establish a mapping between these N-body problems and the short-range Dyson model introduced recently to model intermediate spectral statistics in some systems using which we compute the two-point correlation function and prove the absence of long-range order in the corresponding many-body theory. Further, we also show the absence of off-diagonal long-range order in these systems.

Relationship Between the Energy Eigenstates of Calogero-Sutherland Models With Oscillator and Coulomb-like Potentials

We establish a simple algebraic relationship between the energy eigenstates of the rational Calogero-Sutherland model with harmonic oscillator and Coulomb-like potentials. We show that there is an underlying SU(1,1) algebra in both of these models which plays a crucial role in such an identification. Further, we show that our analysis is in fact valid for any many-particle system in arbitrary dimensions whose potential term (apart from the oscillator or the Coulomb-like potential) is a homogeneous function of coordinates of degree -2. The explicit coordinate transformation which maps the Coulomb-like problem to the oscillator one has also been determined in some specific cases.

Statistical Mechanics of Double sinh-Gordon Kinks

We study the classical thermodynamics of the double sinh-Gordon (DSHG) theory in 1+1 dimensions. This model theory has a double well potential, thus allowing for the existence of kinks and antikinks. Though it is nonintegrable, the DSHG model is remarkably amenable to analysis. Below we obtain exact single kink and kink lattice solutions as well as the asymptotic kink-antikink interaction. In the continuum limit, finding the classical partition function is equivalent to solving for the ground state of a Schrodinger-like equation obtained via the transfer integral method. For the DSHG model, this equation turns out to be quasi-exactly solvable. We exploit this property to obtain exact energy eigenvalues and wavefunctions for several temperatures both above and below the symmetry breaking transition temperature. The availability of exact results provides an excellent testing ground for large scale Langevin simulations. The probability distribution function (PDF) calculated from Langevin dynamics is found to be in striking agreement with the exact PDF obtained from the ground state wavefunction. This validation points to the utility of a PDF-based computation of thermodynamics utilizing Langevin methods. In addition to the PDF, field-field and field fluctuation correlation functions were computed and also found to be in excellent agreement with the exact results.

On The Stability of the Compacton Solutions

The stability of the recently discovered compacton solutions is studied by means of both linear stability analysis as well as Lyapunov stability criteria. From the results obtained it follows that, unlike solitons, all the allowed compacton solutions are stable, as the stability condition is satisfied for arbitrary values of the nonlinearity parameter. The results are shown to be true even for the higher order nonlinear dispersion equations for compactons. Some new conservation laws for the higher order nonlinear dispersion equations are also presented.

N Fermion Ground State of Calogero-Sutherland Type Models in Two and Higher Dimensions

I obtain the exact ground state of $N$-fermions in $D$-dimensions $(D \geq 2)$ in case the $N$ particles are interacting via long-ranged two-body and three-body interactions and further they are also interacting via the harmonic oscillator potential. I also obtain the $N$-fermion ground state in case the oscillator potential is replaced by an $N$-body Coulomb-like interaction.

A Number of Quasi-Exactly Solvable N-body Problems

We present several examples of quasi-exactly solvable $N$-body problems in one, two and higher dimensions. We study various aspects of these problems in some detail. In particular, we show that in some of these examples the corresponding polynomials form an orthogonal set and many of their properties are similar to those of the Bender-Dunne polynomials. We also discuss QES problems where the polynomials do not form an orthogonal set.
