Decay and asymptotics for the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We obtain sharp decay estimates and asymptotics for small solutions to the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with constant coefficient cubic and spatially localized, variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities. Vector-field techniques to deal with the long-range nature of the cubic nonlinearity become problematic in the presence of variable coefficients. We introduce a novel approach based on pointwise-in-time local decay estimates for the Klein-Gordon propagator to overcome this impasse.

Bilinear estimates in the presence of a large potential and a critical NLS in 3d

We propose an approach to nonlinear evolution equations with large and decaying external potentials that addresses the question of controlling globally-in-time the nonlinear interactions of localized waves in this setting. This problem arises when studying localized perturbations around (possibly non-decaying) special solutions of evolution PDEs, and trying to control the projection onto the continuous spectrum of the nonlinear radiative interactions. One of our main tools is the Fourier transform adapted to the Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+V$, which we employ at a nonlinear level. As a first step we analyze the spatial integral of the product of three generalized eigenfunctions of $H$, and determine the precise structure of its singularities. This leads to study bilinear operators with certain singular kernels, for which we derive product estimates of Coifman-Meyer type. This analysis can then be combined with multilinear harmonic analysis tools and the study of oscillations to obtain (distorted Fourier space analogues of) weighted estimates for dispersive and wave equations. As a first application we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $3$d in the presence of large decaying potential with no bound states, and with a $u^2$ non-linearity. The main difficulty is that a quadratic nonlinearity in $3$d is critical with respect to the Strauss exponent; moreover, this nonlinearity has non-trivial fully coherent interactions even when $V=0$. We prove quantitative global-in-time bounds and scattering for small solutions.

Derivation of the Bogoliubov Time Evolution for a Large Volume Mean-field Limit

The derivation of mean-field limits for quantum systems at zero temperature has attracted many researchers in the last decades. Recent developments are the consideration of pair correlations in the effective description, which lead to a much more precise description of both spectral properties and the dynamics of the Bose gas in the weak coupling limit. While mean-field results typically lead to convergence for the reduced density matrix only, one obtains norm convergence when considering the pair correlations proposed by Bogoliubov in his seminal 1947 paper. In this article we consider an interacting Bose gas in the case where both the volume and the density of the gas tend to infinity simultaneously. We assume that the coupling constant is such that the self-interaction of the fluctuations is of leading order, which leads to a finite (non-zero) speed of sound in the gas. In our first main result we show that the difference between the N-body and the Bogoliubov description is small in $L^2$ as the density of the gas tends to infinity and the volume does not grow too fast. This describes the dynamics of delocalized excitations of the order of the volume. In our second main result we consider an interacting Bose gas near the ground state with a macroscopic localized excitation of order of the density. We prove that the microscopic dynamics of the excitation coming from the N-body Schrödinger equation converges to an effective dynamics which is free evolution with the Bogoliubov dispersion relation. The main technical novelty are estimates for all moments of the number of particles outside the condensate for large volume, and in particular control of the tails of their distribution.

Higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons

In this paper, we introduce a novel method for deriving higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons. More precisely, we consider the dynamics of $N$ $d$-dimensional bosons for large $N$. The bosons initially form a Bose-Einstein condensate and interact with each other via a pair potential of the form $(N-1)^{-1}N^{dβ}v(N^β\cdot)$ for $β\in[0,\frac{1}{4d})$. We derive a sequence of $N$-body functions which approximate the true many-body dynamics in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^{d N})$-norm to arbitrary precision in powers of $N^{-1}$. The approximating functions are constructed as Duhamel expansions of finite order in terms of the first quantised analogue of a Bogoliubov time evolution.

Uncertainty principle, minimal escape velocities and observability inequalities for schrödinger equations

We develop a new abstract derivation of the observability inequalities at two points in time for Schrödinger type equations. Our approach consists of two steps. In the first step we prove a Nazarov type uncertainty principle associated with a non-negative self-adjoint operator $H$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In the second step we use results on asymptotic behavior of $e^{-itH}$, in particular, minimal velocity estimates introduced by Sigal and Soffer. Such observability inequalities are closely related to unique continuation problems as well as controllability for the Schrödinger equation.

On the energy cascade of 3-wave kinetic equations: Beyond Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions

In weak turbulence theory, the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectra is a class of time-independent solutions to the kinetic wave equations. In this paper, we construct a new class of time-dependent isotropic solutions to the decaying turbulence problems (whose solutions are energy conserved), with general initial conditions. These solutions exhibit the interesting property that the energy is cascaded from small wavenumbers to large wavenumbers. We can prove that starting with a regular initial condition whose energy at the infinity wave number $|p|=\infty$ is $0$, as time evolves, the energy is gradually accumulated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$. Finally, all the energy of the system is concentrated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$ and the energy function becomes a Dirac function at infinity $Eδ_{\{|p|=\infty\}}$, where $E$ is the total energy. The existence of this class of solutions is, in some sense, {the first complete rigorous} mathematical proof based on the kinetic description for the energy cascade phenomenon for waves with quadratic nonlinearities. We only represent in this paper the analysis of the statistical description of acoustic waves (and equivalently capillary waves). However, our analysis works for other cases as well.

Decay estimates for higher order elliptic operators

This paper is mainly devoted to study time decay estimates of the higher-order Schrödinger type operator $H=(-Δ)^{m}+V(x)$ in $\mathbf{R}^{n}$ for $n>2m$ and $m\in\mathbf{N}$. For certain decay potentials $V(x)$, we first derive the asymptotic expansions of resolvent $R_{V}(z)$ near zero threshold with the presence of zero resonance or zero eigenvalue, as well identify the resonance space for each kind of zero resonance which displays different effects on time decay rate. Then we establish Kato-Jensen type estimates and local decay estimates for higher order Schrödinger propagator $e^{-itH}$ in the presence of zero resonance or zero eigenvalue. As a consequence, the endpoint Strichartz estimate and $L^{p}$-decay estimates can also be obtained. Finally, by a virial argument, a criterion on the absence of positive embedded eigenvalues is given for $(-Δ)^{m}+V(x)$ with a repulsive potential.

Fermi's Golden Rule and $H^1$ Scattering for Nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equations with Metastable States

In this paper, we explore the metastable states of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with potentials. These states come from the instability of a bound state under a nonlinear Fermi's golden rule. In [16], Soffer and Weinstein studied the instability mechanism and obtained an anomalously slow-decaying rate $1/(1+t)^{\frac{1}{4}}$. Here we develop a new method to study the $L^2_x$ norm of solutions to Klein-Gordon equations. With this method, we prove the first $H^1$ scattering result for Klein-Gordon equations with metastable states. By exploring the oscillations, we also give another more robust and more intuitive approach to derive the sharp decay rate $1/(1+t)^{\frac{1}{4}}$.

On the Wave Turbulence Theory for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Random Potentials

We derive a new kinetic and a porous medium equations from the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with random potentials. The kinetic equation has a very similar form with the 4-wave turbulence kinetic equation in the wave turbulence theory. Moreover, we construct a class of self-similar solutions for the porous medium equation. These solutions spread infinitely as time goes to infinity and this fact answers the 'weak turbulence' question for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with random potentials positively. We also derive Ohm's law for the porous medium equation.

Global rough solution for $L^2$-critical semilinear heat equation in the negative Sobolev space

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy global problem for the $L^2$-critical semilinear heat equations $\partial_t h=Δh\pm |h|^{\frac4d}h, $ with $h(0,x)=h_0$, where $h$ is an unknown real function defined on $ \R^+\times\R^d$. In most of the studies on this subject, the initial data $h_0$ belongs to Lebesgue spaces $L^p(\R^d)$ for some $p\ge 2$ or to subcritical Sobolev space $H^{s}(\R^d)$ with $s>0$. We here prove that there exists some positive constant $\varepsilon_0$ depending on $d$, such that the Cauchy problem is locally and globally well-posed for any initial data $h_0$ which is radial, supported away from origin and in the negative Sobolev space $\dot H^{-\varepsilon_0}(\R^d)$ including $L^p(\R^d)$ with certain $p<2$ as subspace. Furthermore, unconditional uniqueness, and $L^2$-estimate both as time $t\to0$ and $t\to +\infty$ were considered.

A semilinear Schroedinger equation with random potential

We study a non-linear Schroedinger equation with a Hartree-type nonlinearity and a localized random time-dependent external potential. Sharp dispersive estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation with a random time-dependent potential enable us to also treat the case of small semi-linear perturbations. In both the linear and the nonlinear instances, we prove that, on average, energy remains bounded and solutions scatter.

Three-Body Dispersive Scattering

We study the spectral and scattering theory of three body dispersive systems, which include a massless particle and a two body non-relativistic pair, along with two body short interactions among the three particles. We prove local decay estimates and propagation estimates, which are then used to prove asymptotic completeness for all non-threshold negative energies of the system. By adding (trace class) non-particle-conserving interactions, this models ionization processes as well. In particular, if the massless particle is interacting only through the non-particle-number conserving interactions, no ionization is possible if the total energy of the system is negative, as predicted by the formal analysis of the photo-electric effect.

Large global solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations III, energy-supercritical cases

In this work, we mainly focus on the energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $$ i\partial_{t}u+Δu= μ|u|^p u, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb{R}^{d+1}, $$ with $μ=\pm1$ and $p>\frac4{d-2}$. %In this work, we consider the energy-supercritical cases, that is, $p\in (\frac4{d-2},+\infty)$. We prove that for radial initial data with high frequency, if it is outgoing (or incoming) and in rough space $H^{s_1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ $(s_1<s_c)$ or its Fourier transform belongs to $W^{s_2,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ $(s_2<s_c)$, the corresponding solution is global and scatters forward (or backward) in time. We also construct a class of large global and scattering solutions starting with many bubbles, which are mingled with in the physical space and separate in the frequency space. The analogous results are also valid for the energy-subcritical cases.

Mean field dynamics of a quantum tracer particle interacting with a boson gas

We consider the dynamics of a heavy quantum tracer particle coupled to a non-relativistic boson field in ${\mathbb R}^3$. The pair interactions of the bosons are of mean-field type, with coupling strength proportional to $\frac1N$ where $N$ is the expected particle number. Assuming that the mass of the tracer particle is proportional to $N$, we derive generalized Hartree equations in the limit $N\rightarrow\infty$. Moreover, we prove the global well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem for sufficiently weak interaction potentials.

Linear inviscid damping and enhanced viscous dissipation of shear flows by using the conjugate operator method

We study the large time behavior of solutions to two-dimensional Euler and Navier-Stokes equations linearized about shear flows of the mixing layer type in the unbounded channel $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$. Under a simple spectral stability assumption on a self-adjoint operator, we prove a local form of the linear inviscid damping that is uniform with respect to small viscosity. We also prove a local form of the enhanced viscous dissipation that takes place at times of order $ν^{-1/3}$, $ν$ being the small viscosity. To prove these results, we use a Hamiltonian approach, following the conjugate operator method developed in the study of Schrödinger operators, combined with a hypocoercivity argument to handle the viscous case.

On coupling kinetic and Schrodinger equations

We consider in this paper a system coupling a linear quantum Boltzmann equation and a defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The Schrodinger equation reflects the dynamics of the wave function of the Bose-Einstein Condensate and the kinetic part of the system describes the evolution of the density function of the thermal cloud. An existence and uniqueness result for the system is supplied. We also prove the convergence to equilibrium of the density function of the thermal cloud and a scattering theory for the wave function of the condensate.

On the dynamics of finite temperature trapped Bose gases

The system that describes the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) and the thermal cloud at finite temperature consists of a nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) and a quantum Boltzmann (QB) equations. In such a system of trapped Bose gases at finite temperature, the QB equation corresponds to the evolution of the density distribution function of the thermal cloud and the NLS is the equation of the condensate. The quantum Boltzmann collision operator in this temperature regime is the sum of two operators $C_{12}$ and $C_{22}$, which describe collisions of the condensate and the non-condenstate atoms and collisions between non-condensate atoms. Above the BEC critical temperature, the system is reduced to an equation containing only $C_{22}$, which possesses a blow-up positive radial solution with respect to the $L^\infty$ norm (cf. \cite{EscobedoVelazquez:2015:FTB}). On the other hand, at the very low temperature regime, the system becomes an equation of $C_{12}$, with a different (much higher order) transition probability, which has a unique global positive radial solution with weighted $L^1$ norm (cf. \cite{AlonsoGambaBinh}). In the current temperature regime, we first decouple the QB and NLS equations, then show a global existence and uniqueness result for positive radial solutions to the spatially homogeneous kinetic system. Different from the case considered in \cite{EscobedoVelazquez:2015:FTB}, due to the presence of the BEC, the collision integrals are associated to sophisticated energy manifolds rather than spheres, since the particle energy is approximated by the Bogoliubov dispersion law. Moreover, the mass of the full system is not conserved while it is conserved for the case considered in \cite{EscobedoVelazquez:2015:FTB}. A new theory is then supplied.
