Dipolar Fermi gases in anisotropic traps

The quest for quantum degenerate Fermi gases interacting through the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction is an exciting and fast developing branch within the cold-atoms research program. Recent experimental progress in trapping, cooling, and controlling polar molecules with large electric dipole moments has, therefore, motivated much theoretical effort. In a recent letter, we have briefly discussed the application of a variational time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach to study theoretically both the static and the dynamic properties of such a system in a cylinder-symmetric harmonic trap. We focused on the hydrodynamic regime, where collisions assure the equilibrium locally. Here, we present a detailed theory, extended to encompass the general case of a harmonic trap geometry without any symmetry. After deriving the equations of motion for the gas, we explore their static solutions to investigate key properties like the aspect ratios in both real and momentum space as well as the stability diagram. We find that, despite the lack of symmetry of the trap, the momentum distribution remains cylinder symmetric. The equations of motion are then used to study the low-lying hydrodynamic excitations, where, apart from the quadrupole and monopole modes, also the radial quadrupole mode is investigated. Furthermore, we study the time-of-flight dynamics as it represents an important diagnostic tool for quantum gases. We find that the real-space aspect ratios are inverted during the expansion, while the one in momentum space becomes asymptotically unity. In addition, anisotropic features of the dipole-dipole interaction are discussed in detail. These results could be particularly useful for future investigations of strongly dipolar heteronuclear polar molecules deep in the quantum degenerate regime.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates with Weak Disorder

A homogeneous polarized dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in the presence of weak quenched disorder within mean-field theory at zero temperature. By first solving perturbatively the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then performing disorder ensemble averages for physical observables, it is shown that the anisotropy of the two-particle interaction is passed on to both the superfluid density and the sound velocity.

Nonlinear Bose-Einstein-condensate Dynamics Induced by a Harmonic Modulation of the s-wave Scattering Length

In a recent experiment, a Bose-Einstein condensate of Li7 has been excited by a harmonic modulation of the atomic s-wave scattering length via Feshbach resonance. By combining an analytical perturbative approach with extensive numerical simulations we analyze the emerging nonlinear dynamics of the system on the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii level at zero temperature. Resulting excitation spectra are presented and prominent nonlinear features are found: mode coupling, higher harmonics generation and significant shifts in the frequencies of collective modes. We indicate how nonlinear dynamical properties could be made clearly observable in future experiments and compared to our results.

Smearing Formulas for Density Matrices

We report on the development of a systematic variational perturbation theory for the euclidean path integral representation of the density matrix based on new smearing formulas for harmonic correlation functions. As a first application, we present the lowest-order approximation for the radial distribution function of an electron in a hydrogen atom.

Fast Converging Path Integrals for Time-Dependent Potentials I: Recursive Calculation of Short-Time Expansion of the Propagator

In this and subsequent paper arXiv:1011.5185 we develop a recursive approach for calculating the short-time expansion of the propagator for a general quantum system in a time-dependent potential to orders that have not yet been accessible before. To this end the propagator is expressed in terms of a discretized effective potential, for which we derive and analytically solve a set of efficient recursion relations. Such a discretized effective potential can be used to substantially speed up numerical Monte Carlo simulations for path integrals, or to set up various analytic approximation techniques to study properties of quantum systems in time-dependent potentials. The analytically derived results are numerically verified by treating several simple models.

Fast Converging Path Integrals for Time-Dependent Potentials II: Generalization to Many-body Systems and Real-Time Formalism

Based on a previously developed recursive approach for calculating the short-time expansion of the propagator for systems with time-independent potentials and its time-dependent generalization for simple single-particle systems, in this paper we present a full extension of this formalism to a general quantum system with many degrees of freedom in a time-dependent potential. Furthermore, we also present a recursive approach for the velocity-independent part of the effective potential, which is necessary for calculating diagonal amplitudes and partition functions, as well as an extension from the imaginary-time formalism to the real-time one, which enables to study the dynamical properties of quantum systems. The recursive approach developed here allows an analytic derivation of the short-time expansion to orders that have not been accessible before, using the implemented SPEEDUP symbolic calculation code. The analytically derived results are extensively numerically verified by treating several models in both imaginary and real time.

Collective Motion of Polarized Dipolar Fermi Gases in the Hydrodynamic Regime

Recently, a seminal STIRAP experiment allowed the creation of 40K-87Rb molecules in the rovibrational ground state [K.-K. Ni et al., Science 322, 231 (2008)]. In order to describe such a polarized dipolar Fermi gas in the hydrodynamic regime, we work out a variational time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach. With this we calculate dynamical properties of such a system as, for instance, the frequencies of the low-lying excitations and the time-of-flight expansion. We find that the dipole-dipole interaction induces anisotropic breathing oscillations in momentum space. In addition, after release from the trap, the momentum distribution becomes asymptotically isotropic, while the particle density becomes anisotropic.

Ultra-Fast Converging Path-Integral Approach for Rotating Ideal Bose-Einstein Condensates

A recently developed efficient recursive approach for analytically calculating the short-time evolution of the one-particle propagator to extremely high orders is applied here for numerically studying the thermodynamical and dynamical properties of a rotating ideal Bose gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms in an anharmonic trap. At first, the one-particle energy spectrum of the system is obtained by diagonalizing the discretized short-time propagator. Using this, many-boson properties such as the condensation temperature, the ground-state occupancy, density profiles, and time-of-flight absorption pictures are calculated for varying rotation frequencies. The obtained results improve previous semiclassical calculations, in particular for smaller particle numbers. Furthermore, we find that typical time scales for a free expansion are increased by an order of magnitude for the delicate regime of both critical and overcritical rotation.

Rotating Fermi gases in an anharmonic trap

Motivated by recent experiments on rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, we investigate a rotating, polarized Fermi gas trapped in an anharmonic potential. We apply a semiclassical expansion of the density of states in order to determine how the thermodynamic properties depend on the rotation frequency. The accuracy of the semiclassical approximation is tested and shown to be sufficient for describing typical experiments. At zero temperature, rotating the gas above a given frequency $Ω_{\rm DO}$ leads to a `donut'-shaped cloud which is analogous to the hole found in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. The free expansion of the gas after suddenly turning off the trap is considered and characterized by the time and rotation frequency dependence of the aspect ratio. Temperature effects are also taken into account and both low- and high-temperature expansions are presented for the relevant thermodynamical quantities. In the high-temperature regime a virial theorem approach is used to study the delicate interplay between rotation and anharmonicity.

Systematic Semiclassical Expansion for Harmonically Trapped Ideal Bose Gases

Using a field-theoretic approach, we systematically generalize the usual semiclassical approximation for a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas in such a way that its range of applicability is essentially extended. With this we can analytically calculate thermodynamic properties even for small particle numbers. In particular, it now becomes possible to determine the critical temperature as well as the temperature dependence of both heat capacity and condensate fraction in low-dimensional traps, where the standard semiclassical approximation is not even applicable.

Effective Action Approach for Quantum Phase Transitions in Bosonic Lattices

Based on standard field-theoretic considerations, we develop an effective action approach for investigating quantum phase transitions in lattice Bose systems at arbitrary temperature. We begin by adding to the Hamiltonian of interest a symmetry breaking source term. Using time-dependent perturbation theory, we then expand the grand-canonical free energy as a double power series in both the tunneling and the source term. From here, an order parameter field is introduced in the standard way, and the underlying effective action is derived via a Legendre transformation. Determining the Ginzburg-Landau expansion to first order in the tunneling term, expressions for the Mott insulator-superfluid phase boundary, condensate density, average particle number, and compressibility are derived and analyzed in detail. Additionally, excitation spectra in the ordered phase are found by considering both longitudinal and transverse variations of the order parameter. Finally, these results are applied to the concrete case of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian on a three dimensional cubic lattice, and compared with the corresponding results from mean-field theory. Although both approaches yield the same Mott insulator - superfluid phase boundary to first order in the tunneling, the predictions of our effective action theory turn out to be superior to the mean-field results deeper into the superfluid phase.

Recursive Schr\" odinger Equation Approach to Faster Converging Path Integrals

By recursively solving the underlying Schr\" odinger equation, we set up an efficient systematic approach for deriving analytic expressions for discretized effective actions. With this we obtain discrete short-time propagators for both one and many particles in arbitrary dimension to orders which have not been accessible before. They can be used to substantially speed up numerical Monte Carlo calculations of path integrals, as well as for setting up a new analytical approximation scheme for energy spectra, density of states, and other statistical properties of quantum systems.

Order via Nonlinearity in Randomly Confined Bose Gases

A Hartree-Fock mean-field theory of a weakly interacting Bose-gas in a quenched white noise disorder potential is presented. A direct continuous transition from the normal gas to a localized Bose-glass phase is found which has localized short-lived excitations with a gapless density of states and vanishing superfluid density. The critical temperature of this transition is as for an ideal gas undergoing Bose-Einstein condensation. Increasing the particle-number density a first-order transition from the localized state to a superfluid phase perturbed by disorder is found. At intermediate number densities both phases can coexist.

Visibility of Cold Atomic Gases in Optical Lattices for Finite Temperatures

In nearly all experiments with ultracold atoms time-of-flight pictures are the only data available. In this paper we present an analytical strong-coupling calculation for those time-of-flight pictures of bosons in an optical lattice in the Mott phase. This allows us to determine the visibility, which quantifies the contrast of peaks in the time-of-flight pictures, and we suggest how to use it as a thermometer.

Noise-dependent stability of the synchronized state in a coupled system of active rotators

We consider a Kuramoto model for the dynamics of an excitable system consisting of two coupled active rotators. Depending on both the coupling strength and the noise, the two rotators can be in a synchronized or desynchronized state. The synchronized state of the system is most stable for intermediate noise intensity in the sense that the coupling strength required to desynchronize the system is maximal at this noise level. We evaluate the phase boundary between synchronized and desynchronized states through numerical and analytical calculations.

Density and Stability in Ultracold Dilute Boson-Fermion Mixtures

We analyze in detail recent experiments on ultracold dilute 87Rb-40K mixtures in Hamburg and in Florence within a mean-field theory. To this end we determine how the stationary bosonic and fermionic density profiles in this mixture depend in the Thomas-Fermi limit on the respective particle numbers. Furthermore, we investigate how the observed stability of the Bose-Fermi mixture with respect to collapse is crucially related to the value of the interspecies s-wave scattering length.

Condensation of Ideal Bose Gas Confined in a Box Within a Canonical Ensemble

We set up recursion relations for the partition function and the ground-state occupancy for a fixed number of non-interacting bosons confined in a square box potential and determine the temperature dependence of the specific heat and the particle number in the ground state. A proper semiclassical treatment is set up which yields the correct small-T-behavior in contrast to an earlier theory in Feynman's textbook on Statistical Mechanics, in which the special role of the ground state was ignored. The results are compared with an exact quantum mechanical treatment. Furthermore, we derive the finite-size effect of the system.

Dynamical Properties of a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

Within a variational approach to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we investigate dynamical properties of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate which is confined in an anharmonic trap. In particular, we calculate the eigenfrequencies of low-energy excitations out of the equilibrium state and the aspect ratio of the condensate widths during the free expansion.
