Synchronization in a neuronal feedback loop through asymmetric temporal delays

We consider the effect of asymmetric temporal delays in a system of two coupled Hopfield neurons. For couplings of opposite signs, a limit cycle emerges via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation when the sum of the delays reaches a critical value. We show that the angular frequency of the limit cycle is independent of an asymmetry in the delays. However, the delay asymmetry determines the phase difference between the periodic activities of the two components. Specifically, when the connection with negative coupling has a delay much larger than the delay for the positive coupling, the system approaches in-phase synchrony between the two components. Employing variational perturbation theory (VPT), we achieve an approximate analytical evaluation of the phase shift, in good agreement with numerical results.

Thermodynamical Properties of a Rotating Ideal Bose Gas

In a recent experiment, a Bose-Einstein condensate was trapped in an anharmonic potential which is well approximated by a harmonic and a quartic part. The condensate was set into such a fast rotation that the centrifugal force in the corotating frame overcompensates the harmonic part in the plane perpendicular to the rotation axis. Thus, the resulting trap potential became Mexican-hat shaped. We present an analysis for an ideal Bose gas which is confined in such an anharmonic rotating trap within a semiclassical approximation where we calculate the critical temperature, the condensate fraction, and the heat capacity. In particular, we examine in detail how these thermodynamical quantities depend on the rotation frequency.

Bose-Einstein Condensation Temperature of Dipolar Gas in Anisotropic Harmonic Trap

We consider a dilute gas of dipole moments in an arbitrary harmonic trap and treat both the short-range, isotropic delta-interaction and the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction perturbatively. With this we calculate the leading shift of the critical temperature with respect to that of an ideal gas as a function of the relative orientation of the dipole moments with respect to the harmonic trap axes. In particular, we determine those magic angles, where the dipolar shift of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature vanishes. Furthermore, we show for the parameters of the ongoing 52Cr-experiment in Stuttgart that this dipolar shift can be enhanced by increasing the number of particles, the geometrical mean trap frequency, and the anisotropy of the trap.

Synergetic Analysis of the Haeussler-von der Malsburg Equations for Manifolds of Arbitrary Geometry

We generalize a model of Haeussler and von der Malsburg which describes the self-organized generation of retinotopic projections between two one-dimensional discrete cell arrays on the basis of cooperative and competitive interactions of the individual synaptic contacts. Our generalized model is independent of the special geometry of the cell arrays and describes the temporal evolution of the connection weights between cells on different manifolds. By linearizing the equations of evolution around the stationary uniform state we determine the critical global growth rate for synapses onto the tectum where an instability arises. Within a nonlinear analysis we use then the methods of synergetics to adiabatically eliminate the stable modes near the instability. The resulting order parameter equations describe the emergence of retinotopic projections from initially undifferentiated mappings independent of dimension and geometry.

Solutions of the Haeussler-von der Malsburg Equations in Manifolds with Constant Curvatures

We apply generic order parameter equations for the emergence of retinotopy between manifolds of different geometry to one- and two-dimensional Euclidean and spherical manifolds. To this end we elaborate both a linear and a nonlinear synergetic analysis which results in order parameter equations for the dynamics of connection weights between two cell sheets. Our results for strings are analogous to those for discrete linear chains obtained previously by Haeussler and von der Malsburg. The case of planes turns out to be more involved as the two dimensions do not decouple in a trivial way. However, superimposing two modes under suitable conditions provides a state with a pronounced retinotopic character. In the case of spherical manifolds we show that the order parameter equations provide stable stationary solutions which correspond to retinotopic modes. A further analysis of higher modes furnishes proof that our model describes the emergence of a perfect one-to-one retinotopy between two spheres.

Critical Temperature of Weakly Interacting Dipolar Condensates

We calculate perturbatively the effect of a dipolar interaction upon the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature. This dipolar shift depends on the angle between the symmetry axes of the trap and the aligned atomic dipole moments, and is extremal for parallel or orthogonal orientations, respectively. The difference of both critical temperatures exhibits most clearly the dipole-dipole interaction and can be enhanced by increasing both the number of atoms and the anisotropy of the trap. Applying our results to chromium atoms, which have a large magnetic dipole moment, shows that this dipolar shift of the critical temperature could be measured in the ongoing Stuttgart experiment.

Bose Condensed Gas in Strong Disorder Potential With Arbitrary Correlation Length

We study the properties of a dilute Bose condensed gas at zero temperature in the presence of a strong random potential with arbitrary correlation length. Starting from the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we use the random phase approximation in order to get a closed integral equation for the averaged density distribution which allows to determine both the condensate and the superfluid density. The obtained results generalize those of Huang and Meng (HM) to strong disorder. In particular, we find the critical value of the disorder strength, where the superfluid phase disappears by a first-order phase transition. We show how this critical value changes as a function of the correlation length.

Variational calculation of the limit cycle and its frequency in a two-neuron model with delay

We consider a model system of two coupled Hopfield neurons, which is described by delay differential equations taking into account the finite signal propagation and processing times. When the delay exceeds a critical value, a limit cycle emerges via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. First, we calculate its frequency and trajectory perturbatively by applying the Poincaré-Lindstedt method. Then, the perturbation series are resummed by means of the Shohat expansion in good agreement with numerical values. However, with increasing delay, the accuracy of the results from the Shohat expansion worsens. We thus apply variational perturbation theory (VPT) to the perturbation expansions to obtain more accurate results, which moreover hold even in the limit of large delays.

Disorder-Induced Shift of Condensation Temperature for Dilute Trapped Bose Gases

We determine the leading shift of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature for an ultracold dilute atomic gas in a harmonic trap due to weak disorder by treating both a Gaussian and a Lorentzian spatial correlation for the quenched disorder potential. Increasing the correlation length from values much smaller than the geometric mean of the trap scale and the mean particle distance to much larger values leads first to an increase of the positive shift to a maximum at this critical length scale and then to a decrease.

Large-D Expansion from Variational Perturbation Theory

We derive recursively the perturbation series for the ground-state energy of the D-dimensional anharmonic oscillator and resum it using variational perturbation theory (VPT). From the exponentially fast converging approximants, we extract the coefficients of the large-D expansion to higher orders. The calculation effort is much smaller than in the standard field-theoretic approach based on the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation.

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of the Phase-Locked Loop with Time Delay

We derive the normal form for the delay-induced Hopf bifurcation in the first-order phase-locked loop with time delay by the multiple scaling method. The resulting periodic orbit is confirmed by numerical simulations. Further detailed numerical investigations demonstrate exemplarily that this system reveals a rich dynamical behavior. With phase portraits, Fourier analysis and Lyapunov spectra it is possible to analyze the scaling properties of the control parameter in the period-doubling scenario, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Within the numerical accuracy there is evidence that the scaling constant of the time-delayed phase-locked loop coincides with the Feigenbaum constant $δ\approx 4.669$ in one-dimensional discrete systems.

Variational Perturbation Theory for Fokker-Planck Equation with Nonlinear Drift

We develop a recursive method for perturbative solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation with nonlinear drift. The series expansion of the time-dependent probability density in terms of powers of the coupling constant is obtained by solving a set of first-order linear ordinary differential equations. Resumming the series in the spirit of variational perturbation theory we are able to determine the probability density for all values of the coupling constant. Comparison with numerical results shows exponential convergence with increasing order.

Quantum Phase Diagram for Homogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensate

We calculate the quantum phase transition for a homogeneous Bose gas in the plane of s-wave scattering length a_s and temperature T. This is done by improving a one-loop result near the interaction-free Bose-Einstein critical temperature T_c^{(0)} with the help of recent high-loop results on the shift of the critical temperature due to a weak atomic repulsion using variational perturbation theory. The quantum phase diagram shows a nose above T_c^{(0)}, so that we predict the existence of a reentrant transition above T_c^{(0)}, where an increasing repulsion leads to the formation of a condensate.

Recursive Graphical Solution of Closed Schwinger-Dyson Equations in phi^4-Theory -- Part1: Generation of Connected and One-Particle Irreducible Feynman Diagrams

Using functional derivatives with respect to the free correlation function we derive a closed set of Schwinger-Dyson equations in phi^4-theory. Its conversion to graphical recursion relations allows us to systematically generate all connected and one-particle irreducible Feynman diagrams for the two- and four-point function together with their weights.

Many-Body Vacuum Diagrams and Their Recursive Graphical Construction

The grand-canonical potential of many-body physics can be considered as a functional of the interaction-free correlation function. As such it obeys a nonlinear functional differential equation which can be turned into a recursion relation. This is solved graphically order by order in the two-particle interaction to find all connected vacuum diagrams with their proper weights. As a special case, the procedure is applied to generate the Hugenholtz diagrams for a weakly interacting Bose gas.

High-Order Variational Perturbation Theory for the Free Energy

In this paper we introduce a generalization to the algebraic Bender-Wu recursion relation for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the anharmonic oscillator. We extend this well known formalism to the time-dependent quantum statistical Schroedinger equation, thus obtaining the imaginary-time evolution amplitude by solving a recursive set of ordinary differential equations. This approach enables us to evaluate global and local quantum statistical quantities of the anharmonic oscillator to much higher orders than by evaluating Feynman diagrams. We probe our perturbative results by deriving a perturbative expression for the free energy which is then subject to variational perturbation theory as developed by Kleinert, yielding convergent results for the free energy for all values of the coupling strength.
