Single impurity atom embedded in a dipolar two-soliton molecule as a qubit

We consider a single impurity atom trapped in a double well (DW) potential created by a dipolar two-soliton molecule in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. By solving the eigenvalue problem for the impurity atom in the DW potential, we find that its ground and first excited states are well separated from higher excited states. This allows it to be approximated by a desirable two-level quantum system. Numerical simulations of the Schrödinger equation, governing impurity atom, demonstrate periodic oscillations in the probability of finding the impurity confined either to the ``left" or to the ``right" side of the DW potential. An analytic expression for the coherent oscillations of the population imbalance between the two wells of the DW potential has been derived using the two-mode approximation. Theoretical predictions of the mathematical model are in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations. Potential usage of the developed setup as a physical realization of ``qubit" has been discussed.

Nonlinear management of the miscibility-immiscibility transition in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate application of the nonlinearity management (NM, i.e., periodic variation of the strength of the inter-component repulsion) to the miscibility-immiscibility (MIM) transition across the critical point of a two-component BEC, both with and without the linear mixing (Rabi coupling, RC) between the components. To this end, we first identify, by means of a variational approximation and numerical solution, diverse stationary domain-wall (DW) structures supported by the system in the absence of the management. The approximate analytical solutions for the DWs are found to be in excellent agreement with their numerical counterparts. An analytical estimate is also produced for the upshift of the MIM transition caused by the pressure of the trapping potential in the case of a confined system. An exact DW solution is produced for the system including the Pöschl-Teller potential, which is stable (unstable) if the potential is repulsive (attractive). Further, we find the spectrum of linear excitations in the spatially uniform mixed state, and thus establish parameter regions where the system is stable/unstable against demixing. In particular, RC upshifts the critical strength of the inter-component repulsion for the onset of the MIM transition. Eigenfrequencies of excitations on top of DW states are identified from numerical simulations through monitoring the evolution of perturbed states. Weak NM applied at the DW eigenfrequency reveals features of the nonlinear resonance. Stronger NM, under which the system periodically crosses the MIM-transition point, restricts the miscibility.

Manifestation of superfluidity in atom-number-imbalanced two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Superfluid and dissipative regimes in the dynamics of a two-component quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with unequal atom numbers in the components have been explored. The system supports localized waves of the symbiotic type owing to the same-species repulsion and cross-species attraction. The minority BEC component moves through the majority component and creates excitations. To quantify the emerging excitations we introduce a time-dependent function called disturbance. Through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with periodic boundary conditions, we have revealed a critical velocity of the localized wave, above which a transition from superfluid to dissipative regime occurs, evidenced by a sharp increase in the disturbance function. The factors responsible for the discrepancy between the actual critical velocity and the speed of sound, expected from theoretical arguments, have been discussed.

Two-dimensional symbiotic solitons and quantum droplets in a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice

Symbiotic solitons (SS) and quantum droplets (QD) are self-trapped localized modes emerging in binary Bose-gas mixtures with intra-component repulsion and inter-component attraction. We have shown that two-dimensional SS can be stabilized against collapse or decay by means of a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice (OL). Mobility of SSs along the free direction of the potential allows us to explore interactions and collisions of SSs moving in the same channel and neighboring channels of the quasi-1D OL. For the case of equal atom numbers in both components of the binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) we have developed a variational approach that showed the stability of SS. For parameter settings when the SS stays on the verge of collapse instability, we take into account the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum fluctuations (QF) term in the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Repulsive QF prevents the mean-field collapse and gives rise to the formation of 2D QDs with peculiar properties such as incompressibility and surface tension, which are inherent to liquids. The proposed model of binary BEC loaded in a quasi-1D OL allows us to demonstrate the manifestations of the incompressibility and surface tension of 2D QDs. The formation of QD in imbalanced binary BEC with different numbers of atoms of the components in the presence of a quasi-1D OL has been investigated. The possible application of the proposed model to studies of anisotropic superfluidity is discussed.

Dynamics of imbalanced quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate in external potentials

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.

Oscillations of a quasi-one-dimensional dipolar supersolid

The properties of a supersolid state (SS) in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate is studied, considering two possible mechanisms of realization - due to repulsive three-body atomic interactions and quantum fluctuations in the framework of the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) theory. The proposed theoretical model, based on minimization of the energy functional, allows evaluating the amplitude of the SS for an arbitrary set of parameters in the governing Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE). To explore the dynamics of the SS first, we numerically construct its ground state in different settings, including periodic boundary conditions, box-like trap and parabolic potential, then impose a perturbation. In oscillations of the perturbed supersolid we observe the key manifestation of SS, namely the free flow of the superfluid fraction through the crystalline component of the system. Two distinct oscillation frequencies of the supersolid associated with the superfluid fraction and crystalline components of the wave function are identified from numerical simulations of the GPE.

Confinement of matter-wave solitons on top of a pedestal-shaped potential

Reflection of wave packets from downward potential steps and attractive potentials, known as a quantum reflection, has been explored for bright matter-wave solitons with the main emphasis on the possibility to trap them on top of a pedestal-shaped potential. In numerical simulations, we observed that moving solitons return from the borders of the potential and remain trapped for a sufficiently long time. The shuttle motion of the soliton is accompanied by shedding some amount of matter at each reflection from the borders of the trap, thus reducing its norm. The one- and two- soliton configurations are considered. A discontinuous jump of trajectories of colliding solitons has been discussed. The time-shift observed in a step-like decay of the moving soliton's norm in the two-soliton configuration is linked to the trajectory jump phenomenon. The obtained results can be of interest for the design of new soliton experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates.

Generation of density waves in dipolar quantum gases by time-periodic modulation of atomic interactions

We study the emergence of density waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) when the strength of dipole-dipole atomic interactions is periodically varied in time. The proposed theoretical model, based on the evolution of small perturbations of the background density, allows to compute the growth rate of instability (gain factor) for arbitrary set of input parameters, thus to identify the regions of instability against density waves. We find that among other modes of the system the roton mode is most effectively excited due to the contribution of sub-harmonics of the excitation frequency. The frequency of temporal oscillations of emerging density waves coincides with the half of the driving frequency, this being the hallmark of the parametric resonance, is characteristic to Faraday waves. The possibility to create density waves in dipolar BECs, which can persist after the emergence, has been demonstrated. The existence of a stationary spatially periodic solution of the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation has been discussed. The effect of three-body atomic interactions, which is relevant to condensates with increased density, upon the properties of emerging waves has been analyzed too. Significant modification of the condensate's excitation spectrum owing to three-body effects is shown.

Weakly bound solitons and two-soliton molecules in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Analytic expressions have been derived for the interaction potential between dipolar bright solitons and the binding energy of a two-soliton molecule. The properties of these localized structures are explored with a focus on their behavior in the weakly bound regime, with a small binding energy. Using the variational approach a coupled system of ordinary differential equations for the parameters of a soliton molecule is obtained for the description of their evolution. Predictions of the model are compared with numerical simulations of the governing nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation and good qualitative agreement between them is demonstrated.

Normal mode oscillations of a nonlocal composite matter wave soliton

The existence of stable bound states of three solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlocal interactions is demonstrated by means of variational approach (VA) and numerical simulations. The potential of interaction between solitons derived from VA is shown to be of molecular type, i.e. attractive at long distances and repulsive at short distances. Normal modes of a three-soliton molecule are investigated by computing small amplitude oscillations of individual solitons near their equilibrium positions. Symmetric and asymmetric stretched states of the molecule are prepared and used as initial conditions in numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation. As opposed to usual triatomic molecules, we find that the frequency of the asymmetric mode of a three-soliton molecule is smaller than the one of the symmetric mode. Possible experimental settings for the observation of these results are briefly discussed.

Effect of quintic nonlinearity on modulation instability in coupled nonlinear Schroedinger systems

Modulation instability (MI) in continuous media described by a system of two cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLSE) has been investigated with a focus on revealing the contribution of the quintic nonlinearity to the development of MI in its linear and nonlinear stages. For the linear stage we derive analytic expression for the MI gain spectrum and compare its predictions with numerical simulations of the governing coupled NLSE. It is found that the quintic nonlinearity significantly enhances the growth rate of MI and alters the features of this well known phenomenon by suppressing its time-periodic character. For the nonlinear stage by employing a localized perturbation to the constant background we find that the quintic nonlinearity notably changes the behavior of MI in the central oscillatory region of the integration domain. In numerical experiments we observe emergence of multiple moving coupled solitons if the parameters are in the domain of MI. Possible applications of the obtained results to mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates and bimodal light propagation in waveguide arrays are discussed.

Interaction of solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates and formation of soliton molecules

The interaction between two bright solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has been investigated aiming at finding the regimes when they form a stable bound state, known as soliton molecule. To study soliton interactions in BEC we employed a method similar to that used in experimental investigation of the interaction between solitons in optical fibers. The idea consists in creating two solitons at some spatial separation from each other at initial time $t_0$, and then measuring the distance between them at a later time $t_1 > t_0$. Depending on whether the distance between solitons has increased, decreased or remained unchanged, compared to its initial value at $t_0$, we conclude that soliton interaction was repulsive, attractive or neutral, respectively. We propose an experimentally viable method for estimating the binding energy of a soliton molecule, based on its dissociation at critical soliton velocity. Our theoretical analysis is based on the variational approach, which appears to be quite accurate in describing the properties of soliton molecules in dipolar BEC, as reflected in good agreement between the analytical and numerical results.

Matter wave soliton bouncer

Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and qualitative agreement between them is found.

Averaged dynamics of soliton molecules in dispersion-managed optical fibers

The existence regimes and dynamics of soliton molecules in dispersion-managed (DM) optical fibers have been studied. Initially we develop a variational approximation (VA) for description of periodic dynamics of a soliton molecule within each unit cell of the dispersion map. The obtained system of coupled equations for the pulse width and chirp allows to find the parameters of DM soliton molecules for the given dispersion map and pulse energy. Then by means of a scaling transformation and averaging procedure we reduce the original nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with piecewise-constant periodic dispersion to its counterpart with constant coefficients and additional parabolic potential. The obtained averaged NLSE with expulsive potential can explain the essential features of solitons and soliton molecules in DM fibers related to their energy loss during propagation. Also, the model of averaged NLSE predicts the instability of the temporal position of the soliton, which may lead to difficulty in holding the pulse in the middle of its time slot. All numerical simulations are performed using the parameters of the existing DM fiber setup, and illustrated via pertinent examples.

Variational analysis of flat-top solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Static and dynamic properties of matter-wave solitons in dense Bose-Einstein condensates, where three-body interactions play a significant role, have been studied by a variational approximation (VA) and numerical simulations. For experimentally relevant parameters, matter-wave solitons may acquire a flat-top shape, which suggests employing a super-Gaussian trial function for VA. Comparison of the soliton profiles, predicted by VA and those found from numerical solution of the governing Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows good agreement, thereby validating the proposed approach.

Solitons in Tonks-Girardeau gas with dipolar interactions

The existence of bright solitons in the model of the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas with dipole-dipole (DD) interactions is reported. The governing equation is taken as the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the nonlocal cubic term accounting for the DD attraction. In different regions of the parameter space (the dipole moment and atom number), matter-wave solitons feature flat-top or compacton-like shapes. For the flat-top states, the NLSE with the local cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity is shown to be a good approximation. Specific dynamical effects are studied assuming that the strength of the DD interactions is ramped up or drops to zero. Generation of dark-soliton pairs in the gas shrinking under the action of the intensifying DD attraction is observed. Dark solitons exhibit the particle-like collision behavior. Peculiarities of dipole solitons in the TG gas are highlighted by comparison with the NLSE including the local CQ terms. Collisions between the solitons are studied too. In many cases, the collisions result in merger of the solitons into a breather, due to strong attraction between them.

Gap-Townes solitons and delocalizing transitions of multidimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We show the existence of gap-Townes solitons for the multidimensional Gross-Pitaeviskii equation with attractive interactions and in two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. In absence of the periodic potential the solution reduces to the known Townes solitons of the multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, sharing with these the propriety of being unstable against small norm (number of atoms) variations. We show that in the presence of the optical lattice the solution separates stable localized solutions (gap-solitons) from decaying ones, characterizing the delocalizing transition occurring in the multidimensional case. The link between these higher dimensional solutions and the ones of one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher order nonlinearities is also discussed.

Matter sound waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

The creation and propagation of sound waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) are investigated and a new method of wave generation in binary BEC mixtures is proposed. The method is based on a fast change of the inter-species interaction constant and is illustrated for two experimental settings: a drop-like condensate immersed into a second large repulsive condensate, and a binary mixture of two homogeneous repulsive BEC's. A mathematical model based on the linearized coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations is developed and explicit formulae for the space and time dependence of sound waves are provided. Comparison of the analytical and numerical results shows excellent agreement, confirming the validity of the proposed approach.
