Moving and colliding pulses in the subcritical Ginzburg-Landau model with a standing-wave drive

We show the existence of steadily moving solitary pulses (SPs) in the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation, which includes the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity and a conservative linear driving term, whose amplitude is a standing wave with wavenumber $k$ and frequency $ω$, the motion of the SPs being possible at velocities $\pm ω/k$, which provide locking to the drive. A realization of the model may be provided by traveling-wave convection in a narrow channel with a standing wave excited in its bottom (or on the surface). An analytical approximation is developed, based on an effective equation of motion for the SP coordinate. Direct simulations demonstrate that the effective equation accurately predicts characteristics of the driven motion of pulses, such as a threshold value of the drive's amplitude. Collisions between two solitons traveling in opposite directions are studied by means of direct simulations, which reveal that they restore their original shapes and velocity after the collision.

Adiabatic N-soliton interactions of Bose-Einstein condensates in external potentials

Perturbed version of the complex Toda chain (CTC) has been employed to describe adiabatic interactions within N-soliton train of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Perturbations induced by weak quadratic and periodic external potentials are studied by both analytical and numerical means. It is found that the perturbed CTC adequately models the N-soliton train dynamics for both types of potentials. As an application of the developed theory we consider the dynamics of a train of matter - wave solitons confined to a parabolic trap and optical lattice, as well as tilted periodic potentials. In the last case we demonstrate that there exist critical values of the strength of the linear potential for which one or more localized states can be extracted from a soliton train. An analytical expression for these critical strengths for expulsion is also derived.

On modelling adiabatic N - soliton interactions in external potentials

We analyze perturbed version of the complex Toda chain (CTC) in an attempt to describe the adiabatic N - soliton train interactions of the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We study perturbations with weak quadratic and periodic external potentials by both analytical and numerical means. The perturbed CTC adequately models the N - soliton train dynamics for both types of potentials. As an application of the developed theory we consider the dynamics of a train of matter - wave solitons confined in a parabolic trap and optical lattice, as well as tilted periodic potential.

Collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate induced by fluctuations of the laser intensity

The dynamics of a metastable attractive Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a system of laser beams is analyzed in the presence of small fluctuations of the laser intensity. It is shown that the condensate will eventually collapse. The expected collapse time is inversely proportional to the integrated covariance of the time autocorrelation function of the laser intensity and it decays logarithmically with the number of atoms. Numerical simulations of the stochastic 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation confirms analytical predictions for small and moderate values of mean field interaction.

Optical pulse propagation in fibers with random dispersion

The propagation of optical pulses in two types of fibers with randomly varying dispersion is investigated. The first type refers to a uniform fiber dispersion superimposed by random modulations with a zero mean. The second type is the dispersion-managed fiber line with fluctuating parameters of the dispersion map. Application of the mean field method leads to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with a dissipation term, expressed by a 4th order derivative of the wave envelope. The prediction of the mean field approach regarding the decay rate of a soliton is compared with that of the perturbation theory based on the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST). A good agreement between these two approaches is found. Possible ways of compensation of the radiative decay of solitons using the linear and nonlinear amplification are explored. Corresponding mean field equation coincides with the complex Swift-Hohenberg equation. The condition for the autosolitonic regime in propagation of optical pulses along a fiber line with fluctuating dispersion is derived and the existence of autosoliton (dissipative soliton) is confirmed by direct numerical simulation of the stochastic NLSE. The dynamics of solitons in optical communication systems with random dispersion-management is further studied applying the variational principle to the mean field NLSE, which results in a system of ODE's for soliton parameters. Extensive numerical simulations of the stochastic NLSE, mean field equation and corresponding set of ODE's are performed to verify the predictions of the developed theory.

Multidimensional solitons in a low-dimensional periodic potential

Using the variational approximation(VA) and direct simulations, we find stable 2D and 3D solitons in the self-attractive Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a potential which is uniform in one direction ($z$) and periodic in the others (but the quasi-1D potentials cannot stabilize 3D solitons). The family of solitons includes single- and multi-peaked ones. The results apply to Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattices (OLs), and to spatial or spatiotemporal solitons in layered optical media. This is the first prediction of {\em mobile} 2D and 3D solitons in BECs, as they keep mobility along $z$. Head-on collisions of in-phase solitons lead to their fusion into a collapsing pulse. Solitons colliding in adjacent OL-induced channels may form a bound state (BS), which then relaxes to a stable asymmetric form. An initially unstable soliton splits into a three-soliton BS. Localized states in the self-repulsive GPE with the low-dimensional OL are found too.

Delocalizing transition of multidimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Critical behavior of solitonic waveforms of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices (OL) has been studied in the framework of continuous mean-field equation. In 2D and 3D OLs bright matter-wave solitons undergo abrupt delocalization as the strength of the OL is decreased below some critical value. Similar delocalizing transition happens when the coefficient of nonlinearity crosses the critical value. Contrarily, bright solitons in 1D OLs retain their integrity over the whole range of parameter variations. The interpretation of the phenomenon in terms of quantum bound states in the effective potential is proposed.

Regular spatial structures in arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates induced by modulational instability

We show that the phenomenon of modulational instability in arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates confined to optical lattices gives rise to coherent spatial structures of localized excitations. These excitations represent thin disks in 1D, narrow tubes in 2D, and small hollows in 3D arrays, filled in with condensed atoms of much greater density compared to surrounding array sites. Aspects of the developed pattern depend on the initial distribution function of the condensate over the optical lattice, corresponding to particular points of the Brillouin zone. The long-time behavior of the spatial structures emerging due to modulational instability is characterized by the periodic recurrence to the initial low-density state in a finite optical lattice. We propose a simple way to retain the localized spatial structures with high atomic concentration, which may be of interest for applications. Theoretical model, based on the multiple scale expansion, describes the basic features of the phenomenon. Results of numerical simulations confirm the analytical predictions.

Multidimensional solitons in periodic potentials

The existence of stable solitons in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) media governed by the self-focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential is demonstrated by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in direct simulations. The potential stabilizes the solitons against collapse. Direct physical realizations are a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical lattice, and a light beam in a bulk Kerr medium of a photonic-crystal type. In the 2D case, the creation of the soliton in a weak lattice potential is possible if the norm of the field (number of atoms in BEC, or optical power in the Kerr medium) exceeds a threshold value (which is smaller than the critical norm leading to collapse). Both "single-cell" and "multi-cell" solitons are found, which occupy, respectively, one or several cells of the periodic potential, depending on the soliton's norm. Solitons of the former type and their stability are well predicted by VA. Stable 2D vortex solitons are found too.

Stable two-dimensional dispersion-managed soliton

The existence of a dispersion-managed soliton in two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodically varying dispersion has been explored. The averaged equations for the soliton width and chirp are obtained which successfully describe the long time evolution of the soliton. The slow dynamics of the soliton around the fixed points for the width and chirp are investigated and the corresponding frequencies are calculated. Analytical predictions are confirmed by direct PDE and ODE simulations. Application to a Bose-Einstein condensate in optical lattice is discussed. The existence of a dispersion-managed matter-wave soliton in such system is shown.

Nonlinear excitations in arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamics of localized excitations in array of Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated in the framework of the nonlinear lattice theory. The existence of temporarily stable ground states displaying an atomic population distributions localized on very few lattice sites (intrinsic localized modes), as well as, of atomic population distributions involving many lattice sites (envelope solitons), is studied both numerically and analytically. The origin and properties of these modes are shown to be inherently connected with the interplay between macroscopic quantum tunnelling and nonlinearity induced self-trapping of atoms in coupled BECs. The phenomenon of Bloch oscillations of these excitations is studied both for zero and non zero backgrounds. We find that in a definite range of parameters, homogeneous distributions can become modulationally unstable. We also show that bright solitons and excitations of shock wave type can exist in BEC arrays even in the case of positive scattering length. Finally, we argue that BEC array with negative scattering length in presence of linear potentials can display collapse.

Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in optical trap

The dynamics of a 2D Bose-Einstein condensate in optical trap is studied taking into consideration fluctuations of the far-off-resonance laser field intensity. The problem is described in the frame of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equation with randomly varying trap potential. An analytic approach based on the moments method has been employed to describe the noise induced evolution of the condensate properties. Stochastic parametric resonance in oscillations of the condensate width is proved to exist. For the condensate with negative scattering length of atoms, it is shown that the noise can delay or even arrest the collapse. Analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations of the underlying PDE and ODE models.
