Magnetic order in epitaxial (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)3/(BaTiO3)3 trilayer heterostructures

The realization of artificial magnetic structures with high epitaxial quality and elevated critical temperatures remains a key challenge for spintronics. Here, we report the fabrication and characterization of epitaxial (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)3/(BaTiO3)3 trilayer heterostructures grown by layer-by-layer laser ablation. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, magnetization measurements, and neutron diffraction confirm their exceptional crystalline order and the absence of structural defects. Neutron diffraction reveals no antiferromagnetic at non-zero wavevector Bragg peaks, ruling out most antiferromagnetic configurations with a non zero wave vector Q. Magnetic hysteresis loops instead evidence a ferromagnetic order with a remanent moment of about 0.5 Bohr magneton per Mn atom at room temperature, persisting either in-plane or out-of-plane depending on the applied field. Our findings highlight neutron diffraction as a powerful tool for elucidating the magnetic structure of complex thin films and suggest that weak interlayer coupling through BaTiO3 leads to ferromagnetism with a high critical temperature (about 600 K).

New Insight into the Fluctuations of the Moving Vortex Lattice: Non-Gaussian Noise and Levy Flights

We report measurements and analysis of the voltage noise due the to vortex motion, performed in superconducting Niobium micro-bridges. Noise in such small systems exhibits important changes from the behavior commonly reported in macroscopic samples. In the low biasing current regime, the voltage fluctuations are shown to deviate substantially from the Gaussian behavior which is systematically observed at higher currents in the so called flux-flow regime. The responsibility of the spatial inhomogeneities of the critical current in this deviation from Gaussian behavior is emphasized. We also report on the first investigation of the effect of an artificial pinning array on the voltage noise statistics. It is shown that the fluctuations can lose their stationarity, and exhibit a Levy flight-like behavior.

Quantitative analysis of the critical current due to vortex pinning by surface corrugation

The transport critical current of a Niobium (Nb) thick film has been measured for a large range of magnetic field. Its value and variation are quantitatively described in the framework of the pinning of vortices due to boundary conditions at the rough surface, with a contact angle well explained by the spectral analysis of the surface roughness. Increasing the surface roughness using a Focused Ion Beam results also in an increase of the superficial critical current.
