Intricacies of Frustrated Magnetism in the Kondo Metal YbAgGe

The combination of localized magnetic moments, their frustration and interaction with itinerant electrons is a key challenge of condensed matter physics. Frustrated magnetic interactions promote degenerate ground states with enhanced fluctuations, a topic that is predominantly studied in magnetic insulators. The coupling between itinerant and localized electrons in metals add complexity to the problem, and presently formulated only for extreme cases in which the itinerant electrons mediate exchange between localized spins (RKKY interaction) or suppress the formation of magnetic moments (Kondo screening). Here, we report an in-depth experimental study of the distorted Kagome metal YbAgGe, unravelling the open questions of how frustration, localized magnetism and itinerant electrons are intertwined in frustrated Kondo metals. We find that coupled itinerant and localized electrons give rise to dynamic magnetic correlations below T* ~ 20 K. At lower temperature, frustrated magnetic interactions establish anisotropic magnetic short-range correlations that culminate into antiferromagnetic long-range order below TN = 0.68 K with a significantly reduced modulated magnetic moment. We show that local moment Hamiltonians can yield limited understanding of the microscopic behaviour in frustrated metals, and prompt the extension of more sophisticated model Hamiltonians incorporating itinerant effects.

The dispersion relation of Landau elementary excitations and the thermodynamic properties of superfluid $^4$He

The dispersion relation $\epsilon(k)$ of the elementary excitations of superfluid $^4$He has been measured at very low temperatures, from saturated vapor pressure up to solidification, using a high flux time-of-flight neutron scattering spectrometer equipped with a high spatial resolution detector (10$^5$ 'pixels'). A complete determination of $\epsilon(k)$ is achieved, from very low wave-vectors up to the end of Pitaeskii's plateau. The results compare favorably in the whole the wave-vector range with the predictions of the dynamic many-body theory (DMBT). At low wave-vectors, bridging the gap between ultrasonic data and former neutron measurements, the evolution with the pressure from anomalous to normal dispersion, as well as the peculiar wave-vector dependence of the phase and group velocities, are accurately characterized. The thermodynamic properties have been calculated analytically, developing Landau's model, using the measured dispersion curve. A good agreement is found below 0.85 K between direct heat capacity measurements and the calculated specific heat, if thermodynamically consistent power series expansions are used. The thermodynamic properties have also been calculated numerically; in this case, the results are applicable with excellent accuracy up to 1.3 K, a temperature above which the dispersion relation itself becomes temperature dependent.

Emergent magnetic behaviour in the frustrated Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ garnet

We report neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and Monte Carlo theoretical analysis to verify the short range nature of the magnetic structure and spin-spin correlations in a Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ single crystal. The quantum spin state of Yb$^{3+}$ in Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ is verified. The quantum spins organise into a short ranged emergent director state for T $<$ 0.4 K derived from anisotropy and near neighbour exchange. We derive the magnitude of the near neighbour exchange interactions $0.6\; {\rm K} < J_1 < 0.7\; {\rm K}, J_2 = 0.12$~K and the magnitude of the dipolar exchange interaction, $D$, in the range $0.18 < D < 0.21$ K. Certain aspects of the broad experimental dataset can be modelled using a $J_1D$ model with ferromagnetic near neighbour spin-spin correlations while other aspects of the data can be accurately reproduced using a $J_1J_2D$ model with antiferromagnetic near neighbour spin-spin correlation. As such, although we do not quantify all the relevant exchange interactions we nevertheless provide a strong basis for the understanding of the complex Hamiltonian required to fully describe the magnetic state of Yb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$.

Evidence for a spinon Fermi surface in the triangular S=1 quantum spin liquid Ba$_3$NiSb$_2$O$_9$

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the low-energy magnetic excitations in the spin-1 triangular lattice of the 6H-B phase of Ba$_3$NiSb$_2$O$_9$. We study two powder samples: Ba$_3$NiSb$_2$O$_9$ synthesized under high pressure and Ba$_{2.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$NiSb$_2$O$_9$ in which chemical pressure stabilizes the 6H-B structure. The measured excitation spectra show broad gapless and nondispersive continua at characteristic wave vectors. Our data rules out most theoretical scenarios that have previously been proposed for this phase, and we find that it is well described by an exotic quantum spin liquid with three flavors of unpaired fermionic spinons, forming a large spinon Fermi surface.

Magnetic structure of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si

We have determined the magnetic structure of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si using elastic polarized neutron scattering with field-projected (longitudinal) XYZ polarization analysis. We find that the magnetic moment has components both in the tetragonal basal plane and along the tetragonal four-fold axis. Such a magnetic structure is not symmetry-allowed if the magnetic phase transition is second order, and may imply that CePt3Si has lower symmetry in the superconducting state than originally thought.

Nd2Sn2O7: an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet with no divergence-free field and anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics

We report measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the pyrochlore compound Nd2Sn2O7. It undergoes a second order magnetic phase transition at Tc ~ 0.91 K to a noncoplanar all-in-all-out magnetic structure of the Nd3+ magnetic moments. The thermal behavior of the low temperature specific heat fingerprints excitations with linear dispersion in a three-dimensional lattice. The temperature independent spin-lattice relaxation rate measured below Tc and the anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics detected up to ~ 30 Tc are suggested to be due to magnetic short-range correlations in unidimensional spin clusters, i.e., spin loops. The observation of a spontaneous field in muon spin relaxation measurements is associated with the absence of a divergence-free field for the ground state of an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet as predicted recently.

Haydeeite: a spin-1/2 kagome ferromagnet

The mineral haydeeite, alpha-MgCu3(OD)6Cl2, is a S=1/2 kagome ferromagnet that displays long-range magnetic order below TC=4.2 K with a strongly reduced moment. Our inelastic neutron scattering data show clear spin-wave excitations that are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1=-38 K and antiferromagnetic exchange Jd=+11 K across the hexagons of the kagome lattice. These values place haydeeite very close to the quantum phase transition between ferromagnetic order and non-coplanar twelve-sublattice cuboc2 antiferromagnetic order. Diffuse dynamic short-range ferromagnetic correlations observed above TC persist well into the ferromagnetically ordered phase with a behavior distinct from critical scattering.

Contrasting chemical pressure effect on the moment direction in the Kondo semiconductor CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru,Os)

The opening of a spin gap in the orthorhombic compounds CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) is followed by antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_N$ = 27 K and 28.5 K, respectively, with a small ordered moment (0.29$-$0.34$\mu_B$) along the $c-$axis, which is not an easy axis of the crystal field (CEF). In order to investigate how the moment direction and the spin gap energy change with 10\% La doping in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$T$_2$Al$_{10}$ (T = Ru and Os) and also to understand the microscopic nature of the magnetic ground state, we here report on magnetic, transport, and thermal properties, neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on these compounds. Our INS study reveals the persistence of spin gaps of 7 meV and 10 meV in the 10\% La-doped T = Ru and Os compounds, respectively. More interestingly our ND study shows a very small ordered moment of 0.18 $\mu_B$ along the $b-$axis (moment direction changed compared with the undoped compound), in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$, however a moment of 0.23 $\mu_B$ still along the $c-$axis in Ce$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$Os$_2$Al$_{10}$. This contrasting behavior can be explained by a different degree of hybridization in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$, being stronger in the latter than in the former. Muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) studies on Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7), reveal the presence of coherent frequency oscillations indicating a long$-$range magnetically ordered ground state for $x$ = 0 to 0.5, but an almost temperature independent Kubo$-$Toyabe response between 45 mK and 4 K for $x$ = 0.7. We will compare the results of the present investigations with those reported on the electron and hole$-$doping in CeT$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Spin excitations in the two-dimensional strongly coupled dimer system malachite

The mineral malachite, Cu2(OD)2CO3, has a quantum spin-liquid ground state and no long-range magnetic order down to at least T=0.4 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements show that the excitation spectrum consists of dispersive gapped singlet-triplet excitations, characteristic of spin-1/2 dimer-forming Heisenberg antiferromagnets. We identify a new two-dimensional dimerized coupling scheme with strong interdimer coupling J'/J1~0.3 that places malachite between strongly coupled alternating chains, square lattice antiferromagnets, and infinite-legged ladders. The geometry of the interaction scheme resembles the staggered dimer lattice, which may allow unconventional quantum criticality.

Roton-Phonon Interactions in Superfluid 4He

High-resolution neutron resonance spin-echo measurements of superfluid 4He show that the roton energy does not have the same temperature dependence as the inverse lifetime. Diagrammatic analysis attributes this to the interaction of rotons with thermally excited phonons via both four- and three-particle processes, the latter being allowed by the broken gauge symmetry of the Bose condensate. The distinct temperature dependence of the roton energy at low temperatures suggests that the net roton-phonon interaction is repulsive.

Reply to: Comment by S.-L. Drechsler et al. (arXiv:1006.5070v2)

In a comment on arXiv:1006.5070v2, Drechsler et al. claim that the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain LiCuVO4 should be described by a strong rather than weak ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction, in contradiction with their previous work. Their comment is based on DMRG and ED calculations of the magnetization curve and the magnetic excitations. We show that their parameters are at odds with the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic excitation spectrum, once intensities are taken into account, and that the magnetization curve cannot discriminate between largely different parameter sets within experimental uncertainties. We further show that their new exact diagonalization results support the validity of the RPA-approach, and strongly reinforce our conclusion on the existence of a four-spinon continuum in LiCuVO4, see Enderle et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 (2010) 237207.

Anomalous spin distribution in the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe studied by polarized neutron diffraction

We report a polarized neutron diffraction study conducted to reveal the nature of the weak ferromagnetic moment in the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe. We find that the ordered moment in the normal phase in low magnetic fields (B // c) is predominantly located at the U atom and has a magnitude of about 0.1 muB at 3 T, in agreement with bulk magnetization data. By increasing the magnetic field the U moment grows to about 0.3 muB in 12 T and most remarkably, induces a substantial moment (about 0.2 muB) on the Co atom directed antiparallel to the U moment. The anomalous polarizability of the Co 3d orbitals is unique among uranium intermetallics and might reflect the proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point of UCoGe in zero field.

Inelastic neutron scattering studies of the quantum frustrated magnet clinoatacamite, $γ$-Cu2(OD)3Cl, a proposed valence bond solid (VBS)

The frustrated magnet clinoatacamite, $γ$-Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Cl, is attracting a lot of interest after suggestions that at low temperature it forms an exotic quantum state termed a Valence Bond Solid (VBS) made from dimerised Cu$^{2+}$ ($S=1/2$) spins.\cite{Lee_clinoatacamite} Key to the arguments surrounding this proposal were suggestions that the kagomé planes in the magnetic pyrochlore lattice of clinoatacamite are only weakly coupled, causing the system to behave as a quasi-2-dimensional magnet. This was reasoned from the near 95$^\circ$ angles made at the bridging oxygens that mediate exchange between the Cu ions that link the kagomé planes. Recent work pointed out that this exchange model is inappropriate for $γ$-Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Cl, where the oxygen is present as a $μ_3$-OH.\cite{Wills_JPC} Further, it used symmetry calculations and neutron powder diffraction to show that the low temperature magnetic structure ($T<6$ K) was canted and involved significant spin ordering on all the Cu$^{2+}$ spins, which is incompatible with the interpretation of simultaneous VBS and Néel ordering. Correspondingly, clinoatacamite is best considered a distorted pyrochlore magnet. In this report we show detailed inelastic neutron scattering spectra and revisit the responses of this frustrated quantum magnet.

Crystal-field ground state of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt3Si: a combined polarized soft X-ray absorption and polarized neutron study

We determined the crystal-field split Hund's rule ground state of the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt3Si with polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and polarized neutron scattering. We are also able to give the sequence of the crystal-field states from the temperature evolution of the linear dichroic signal in the XAS. The quantitative analysis of the XAS temperature dependence together with the neutron transition energies complete the identification of the crystal-field level scheme.

Low-energy magnetic response of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si studied via inelastic neutron scattering

The low-energy magnetic excitations of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si have been measured with inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Kondo-type spin fluctuations with an anisotropic wave vector dependence are observed in the paramagnetic state. These fluctuations do not survive in the antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN=2.2 K but are replaced by damped spin waves, whose dispersion is much stronger along the c-axis than in other directions. No change is observed in the excitation spectrum or the magnetic order as the system enters the superconducting state below Tc=0.7 K.

Spin correlation in kagomé ice state: neutron scattering study of the dipolar spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} under magnetic field along [111]

We have investigated the kagomé ice state in the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} under magnetic field along a [111] axis. Spin correlations have been measured by neutron scattering and analyzed by Monte-Carlo simulation. The kagomé ice state, which has a non-vanishing residual entropy well established for the nearest-neighbor spin ice model by the exact solution, has been proved to be realized in the dipolar-interacting spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} by observing the characteristic spin correlations. The simulation shows that the long-range interaction gives rise to only weak lifting of the ground state degeneracy and that the system freezes within the degenerate kagomé ice manifold .

Magnetic excitations in the Kagome staircase compounds

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on single crystal samples of Co3V2O8 and Ni3V2O8. The magnetic system in these compounds is believed to be frustrated, as the magnetic ions Co2+ with S=3/2 and Ni2+ with S=1 adopt a buckled version of the Kagome lattice. Magnetic excitations have been observed in both samples using a time-of-flight neutron spectrometer. The excitation spectrum is dispersive for both samples and has a considerable gap in the low temperature phases, while the intermediate temperature phases are marked by a significant softening of the excitations energy.

Kagomé ice state in the dipolar spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}

We have investigated the kagomé ice behavior of the dipolar spin-ice compound Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} in magnetic field along a [111] direction using neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations. The spin correlations show that the kagomé ice behavior predicted for the nearest-neighbor (NN) interacting model, where the field induces dimensional reduction and spins are frustrated in each two-dimensional kagomé lattice, occurs in the dipole interacting system. The spins freeze at low temperatures within the macroscopically degenerate ground states of the NN model.
