Neutron scattering studies of the spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in applied magnetic field

Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in single crystals of the spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in an external magnetic field applied along either the [001] or [1-10] crystallographic directions. With the field applied along [001] a long range ordered groundstate is selected from the spin ice manifold. With the field applied along [1-10] the experiments show that the spin system is separated into parallel (alpha) and perpendicular (beta) chains with respect to the field. This leads to partial ordering and the appearance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic structures. In both field orientations this frustrated spin system is defined by the appearance of metastable states, magnetization plateaux and unusually slow, field regulated dynamics.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of single crystal heavy fermion YbAgGe

Single crystals of the heavy-fermion compound YbAgGe have been studied by neutron scattering. The magnetic ordering occurring below T1=0.5 K is characterized by a commensurate propagation vector k=(1/3,0,1/3) and the moments in the basal plane of the hexagonal structure. The dynamic magnetic susceptibility is dominated by quasielastic spin fluctuations with a characteristic energy Gamma of the order of 1 meV. The spins fluctuate predominantly in the basal plane. No spin-wave excitations are observed in the magnetically ordered phase. Below the Kondo temperature, TK=20 K, Gamma shows a strong q dependence for wave vectors along the c* direction, but is q-independent in the basal plane. Gamma shows initially a rapid increase with temperature T at the antiferromagnetic zone center, but follows a standard sqrt(T) law for other q values and for T>TK in general. These observations classify YbAgGe as a well-behaved heavy-fermion compound with a particular q-dependence of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, possibly related to the geometrical frustration of the Yb3+ ions.

Neutron Scattering Investigation of the Spin Ice State in Dy2Ti2O7

Dy2Ti2O7 has been advanced as an ideal spin ice. We present a neutron scattering investigation of a sample of 162Dy2Ti2O7. The scattering intensity has been mapped in zero applied field in the hhl and hk0 planes at temperatures between 0.05 K and 20 K. The measured diffuse scattering (in the static approximation) has been compared to that predicted by the dipolar spin ice model. The comparison is good, except at the Brillouin zone boundaries where extra scattering appears in the experimental data. It is concluded that the dipolar spin ice model provides a successful basis for understanding Dy2Ti2O7, but that there are issues which remain to be clarified.

Pressure dependence of magnetism in URu2Si2

Neutron-scattering and specific-heat measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure and with Rh-doping [U(Ru{0.98}Rh{0.02})2Si2] show the existence of two magnetic phase transitions. At the second-order phase transition Tm ≈ 17.5 K, a tiny ordered moment is established, while at TM < Tm, a first-order phase transition (under pressure or doping) gives rise to a large moment. The results can be understood in terms of a hidden OP Psi coupled to the ordered moment m, where m and Psi have the same symmetry.

Polarization analysis of the inelastic magnetic scattering in Sr2RuO4

The spin fluctuations in the normal state of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 have been studied using inelastic neutron scattering with polarization analysis on single crystals. We find that the spin fluctuations are anisotropic with chi_c/chi_ab=2.0 (0.4). No evidence for Q-independent or nearly-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found in the energy range 4-22 meV, in contradiction with NMR measurements.

Study of low-energy magnetic excitations in single-crystalline CeIn3 by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on single crystals of the heavy-fermion compound CeIn$_{3}$ for temperatures below and above the Néel temperature, $T_N$. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, well-defined spin-wave excitations with a bandwidth of 2 meV are observed. The spin waves coexist with quasielastic (QE) Kondo-type spin-fluctuations and broadened crystal-field (CF) excitations below $T_N$. Above $T_N$, only the QE and CF excitations persist, with a weak temperature dependence.

Inflection point in the magnetic field dependence of the ordered moment of URu2Si2 observed by neutron scattering in fields up to 17 T

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the ordered antiferromagnetic moment and the magnetic excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 for fields up to 17 Tesla applied along the tetragonal c axis, using neutron scattering. The decrease of the magnetic intensity of the tiny moment with increasing field does not follow a simple power law, but shows a clear inflection point, indicating that the moment disappears first at the metamagnetic transition at ~40 T. This suggests that the moment m is connected to a hidden order parameter Phi which belongs to the same irreducible representation breaking time-reversal symmetry. The magnetic excitation gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center Q=(1,0,0) increases continuously with increasing field, while that at Q=(1.4,0,0) is nearly constant. This field dependence is opposite to that of the gap extracted from specific-heat data.

Comment on "Magnetic field effects on neutron diffraction in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt3"

Moreno and Sauls [Phys. Rev. B 63, 024419 (2000)] have recently tried to reanalyze earlier neutron scattering studies of the antiferromagnetic order in UPt3 with a magnetic field applied in the basal plane. In their calculation of the magnetic Bragg peak intensities, they perform an average over different magnetic structures belonging to distinct symmetry representations. This is incorrect. In addition, they have mistaken the magnetic field direction in one of the experiments, hence invalidating their conclusions concerning the experimental results.

Field Induced Partial Order in the Spin-Ice Dysprosium Titanate

Neutron scattering has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in the the spin ice material dysprosium titanate, Dy2Ti2O7. An isotopically enriched sample was used to minimise neutron absorption. In zero field no magnetic order was observed down to 50 mK but the magnetic diffuse scattering was in qualitative agreement with that expected for the disordered low temperature state of dipolar spin ice. Application of a field of ~ 0.8 T in the [100] direction led to long range order. With the field applied in the [1-10] direction a coexistence of long range ferromagnetic and short range antiferromagnetic order was observed. This is attributed to the pinning of only half the spins by the field. The hysteresis loops in both field orientations displayed unusual steps and plateaus.

Dynamics of liquid 4He in Vycor

We have measured the dynamic structure factor of liquid 4He in Vycor using neutron inelastic scattering. Well-defined phonon-roton (p-r) excitations are observed in the superfluid phase for all wave vectors 0.3 < Q < 2.15. The p-r energies and lifetimes at low temperature (T = 0.5 K) and their temperature dependence are the same as in bulk liquid 4He. However, the weight of the single p-r component does not scale with the superfluid fraction (SF) as it does in the bulk. In particular, we observe a p-r excitation between T_c = 1.952 K, where SF = 0, and T_(lambda)=2.172 K of the bulk. This suggests, if the p-r excitation intensity scales with the Bose condensate, that there is a separation of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature and the superfluid transition temperature T_c of 4He in Vycor. We also observe a two-dimensional layer mode near the roton wave vector. Its dispersion is consistent with specific heat and SF measurements and with layer modes observed on graphite surfaces.

Unconventional ferromagnetic and spin-glass states of the reentrant spin glass Fe0.7Al0.3

Spin excitations of single crystal Fe0.7Al0.3 were investigated over a wide range in energy and reciprocal space with inelastic neutron scattering. In the ferromagnetic phase, propagating spin wave modes become paramagnon-like diffusive modes beyond a critical wave vector q0, indicating substantial disorder in the long-range ordered state. In the spin glass phase, spin dynamics is strongly q-dependent, suggesting remnant short-range spin correlations. Quantitative model for S(energy,q) in the ``ferromagnetic'' phase is determined.

Neutron-diffraction study of the evolution of antiferromagnetic order in UPt3 doped with Pd

Neutron-diffraction experiments have been carried out on U(Pt1-xPdx)3 single crystals (x<= 0.05). The small-moment antiferromagnetic order (SMAF) reported for pure UPt3 is robust upon doping and persists till at least x= 0.005. The ordered moment grows from 0.018(2) mB/U-atom for pure UPt3 to 0.048(8) mB/U-atom for x= 0.005. The Neel temperature, TN, is approximately 6 K and does not vary with Pd contents. The order parameter for the SMAF has an unusual quasi-linear temperature variation. For x>= 0.01 a large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAF) is found. For this phase at optimum doping (x= 0.05) TN attains a maximum value of 5.8 K and the ordered moment equals 0.63(5) mB/U-atom. TN(x) for the LMAF follows a Doniach-type phase diagram. We infer that the antiferromagnetic instability in U(Pt1-xPdx)3 is located in the range 0.5-1 at.% Pd.
