Evidence of electronic phase separation in the strongly correlated semiconductor YbB12

The studies of high-quality single-domain crystals of YbB12 were carried out by the precise x-ray diffraction technique in combination with the low temperature polarized THz - infrared spectroscopy and accurate magnetotransport measurements. It has been shown for the first time that this archetypal strongly correlated system with a metal-insulator transition to a mysterious dielectric ground state with a metal Fermi surface (Science 362, 65-69 (2018) and ibid 362, 32-33 (2018)) is actually a heterogeneous compound in the regime of electronic phase separation. Changes in the configuration of the discovered dynamic charge stripes are investigated upon cooling, as a result, a conclusion is drawn in favor of a crossover between different patterns of the filamentary electronic structure penetrating the semiconducting matrix of YbB12. We argue that the discovery of stripes in YbB12 is fundamental, elucidating the nature of exotic dielectric state in Kondo insulators.

Hertz-to-terahertz dielectric response of nanoconfined water molecules

Broad-band dielectric spectroscopy, heat capacity measurements and molecular dynamic simulations are applied to study excitations of interacting electric dipoles spatially arranged in a network with an inter-dipole distance of 5-10 A. The dipoles with magnitude of 1.85 Debye are represented by single H2O molecules located in voids (0.5 nm size) formed by ions of the crystal lattice of cordierite. We discover emergence of nontrivial disordered paraelectric phase of dipolar system with signs of phase transition below 3 K.

Low-Energy Excitations in Quantum Spin-Liquids Identified by Optical Spectroscopy

The electrodynamic response of organic spin liquids with highly-frustrated triangular lattices has been measured in a wide energy range. While the overall optical spectra of these Mott insulators are governed by transitions between the Hubbard bands, distinct in-gap excitations can be identified at low temperatures and frequencies which we attribute to the quantum spin liquid state. For the strongly correlated $β^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$\-Sb\-[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, we discover enhanced conductivity below $175~{\rm cm}^{-1}$, comparable to the energy of the magnetic coupling $J\approx 250$ K. For $ω\rightarrow 0$ these low-frequency excitations vanish faster than the charge-carrier response subject to Mott-Hubbard correlations, resulting in a dome-shape band peaked at 100~\cm. Possible relations to spinons, magnons and disorder are discussed.

Quantum Spin Liquids Unveil the Genuine Mott State

The Widom line identifies the locus in the phase diagram where a supercritical gas crosses over from gas-like to a more liquid-like behavior. A similar transition exists in correlated electron liquids, where the interplay of Coulomb repulsion, bandwidth and temperature triggers between the Mott insulating state and an incoherent conduction regime. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of three organic quantum spin liquids with different degrees of effective correlation, where the absence of magnetic order enables unique insight into the nature of the genuine Mott state down to the most relevant low-temperature region. Combining optical spectroscopy with pressure-dependent dc transport and theoretical calculations, we succeeded to construct a phase diagram valid for all Mott insulators on a quantitative scale. In the vicinity of the low-temperature phase boundary, we discover metallic fluctuations within the Mott gap, exhibiting enhanced absorption upon cooling that is not present in antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. Our findings reveal the phase coexistence region and Pomeranchuk-like anomaly of the Mott transition, previously predicted but never observed.

Lattice vibrations of the charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_{3}$: novel interpretation of the electrodynamic response in a spin-liquid compound

The dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ exhibits unusual electrodynamic properties. Numerical investigations of the electronic ground state and the molecular and lattice vibrations reveal the importance of the Cu$_2$(CN)$_3^-$ anion network coupled to the BEDT-TTF molecules: The threefold cyanide coordination of copper and linkage isomerism in the anion structure cause a loss of symmetry, frustration, disorder, and domain formation. Our findings consistently explain the temperature and polarization-dependent THz and infrared measurements, reinforce the understanding of dielectric properties and have important implications for the quantum spin-liquid state, which should be treated beyond two-dimensional, purely electronic models.

Low-Energy Excitations in the Quantum Spin-Liquid $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_{3}$

The electrodynamic response of the organic spin-liquid candidate $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been measured in an extremely wide energy range ($10^{-13}$ to 2 eV) as a function of temperature (5 to 300 K). Below the Mott gap, excitations from the un-gapped spinon continuum cause a considerable contribution to the infrared conductivity, as suggested by the U(1) gauge theory. At THz frequencies we can identify a power-law behavior $σ(ω) \propto ω^β$ with two distinct exponents $β$ that change from 0.9 to 1.3 at low temperatures. The corresponding crossover scales with temperature: $\hbarω_c \approx k_B T$. The observed exponents differ by more than a factor of 2 from the theoretically predicted ones. The findings are compared with those obtained on Herbertsmithites.

Boson peak in overdoped manganites La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3}

In the charge-ordered phase of strongly doped manganites La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x \geq 0.5$) absorption lines appear in the terahertz spectral range for commensurate $x$ values right below the charge-ordering temperature. They are connected to acoustic phonons that become optically active by folding of the Brillouin zone. At lower temperatures a strongly asymmetric extra absorption band develops at frequencies corresponding to the position of the lowest-energy van Hove singularity in the reduced Brillouin zone. The band is assigned to the boson peak, i.e. to the excess of lattice vibrational states over the standard Debye contribution. The folded phonons and the boson peak do not show up for incommensurate calcium contents when no distinct Brillouin zone folding exists.

Universal Decomposition of the Low-Frequency Conductivity Spectra of Iron-Pnictides Uncovering Fermi-Liquid Behavior

Infrared reflectivity measurements on 122 iron-pnictides reveal the existence of two electronic subsystems. The one gapped due to the spin-density-wave transition in the parent materials, such as EuFe$_2$As$_{2}$, is responsible for superconductivity in the doped compounds, like Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. Analyzing the dc resistivity and scattering rate of this contribution, a hidden $T^2$ dependence is found, indicating that superconductivity evolves out of a Fermi-liquid state. The second subsystem gives rise to incoherent background, present in all 122 compounds, which is basically temperature independent, but affected by the superconducting transition.

Direct observation of a nodeless superconducting energy gap in the optical conductivity of iron-pnictides

The temperature-dependent optical reflectivity and complex transmissivity of an epitaxially grown Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ thin film were measured and the optical conductivity and permittivity evaluated over a wide frequency range. The opening of the superconducting gap $2Δ_0 = 3.7$ meV below $T_c\approx 20$ K is {\em directly} observed by a completely vanishing optical conductivity. The temperature and frequency dependent electrodynamic properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ in the superconducting state agree well with the BCS predictions with no nodes in the order parameter. The spectral weight of the condensate $1.94\times 10^7 {\rm cm}^{-2}$ corresponds to a London penetration depth $λ_L=3600$ Å.

Superfluid density of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$As$_2$ from optical experiments

The temperature dependence of the $ab$-plane optical reflectivity of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$ single crystals is measured in a wide spectral range. Upon entering the superconducting regime, the reflectivity in both compounds increases considerably at low frequency, leading to a clear gap in the optical conductivity below 100 cm$^{-1}$. From the analysis of the complex conductivity spectra we obtain the penetration depth $λ(T)=(3500\pm 350)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and $(3000\pm 300)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. The calculated superfluid density $ρ_s$ of both compounds nicely fits the scaling relation $ρ_s=(125\pm 25)σ_{dc}T_c$.

Origin of Low-Energy Excitations in Charge-Ordered Manganites

The low-energy excitations in the charge-ordered phase of polycrystalline La0.25Ca0.75MnO3 are explored by frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the frequency range from 4 cm^-1 to 700 cm^-1 (energies 0.4 meV to 90 meV) and at temperatures down to 5 K, we do not detect any feature that can be associated with the collective response of the spatially modulated charge continuum. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, broad absorption bands appear in the conductivity and permittivity spectra around 30 cm^-1 and 100 cm^-1 which are assigned to former acoustic phonons optically activated due to a fourfold superstructure in the crystal lattice. Our results indicate that characteristic energies of collective excitations of the charge-ordered phase in La0:25Ca0:75MnO3, if any, lie below 1 meV. At our lowest frequencies of only few wavenumbers a strong relaxation is observed above 100 K connected to the formation of the charge-ordered state.

Crossover from one-dimensional copper-oxygen chains to two-dimensional ladders charge transport in (La,Y)y(Sr,Ca)14-yCu24O41

The charge transport in the copper-oxygen chain/ladder layers of (La,Y)y(Sr,Ca)14-yCu24O41 is investigated along two crystallographic directions in the temperature range from 50 K to 700 K and for doping levels from y ~= 6 (number of holes nh < 1) to y = 0 (number of holes nh = 6). A crossover from a one-dimensional hopping transport along the chains for y >= 3 to a quasi-two-dimensional charge conduction in the ladder planes for y <~ 2 is observed. This is attributed to a partial hole transfer from chains to ladders when the hole doping exceeds nh ~= 4 and approaches fully doped value n_h = 6. For y <~ 2 a weak dielectric relaxation at radio-frequencies and a microwave mode are detected, which might be recognized as signatures of a charge-density wave phase developed at short length scales in the ladders planes.

Charge Localization due to RKKY Interaction in the Spin Glass AuFe

Measurements of electrodynamic response of of spin glass AuFe films in comparison with pure gold films are performed at frequencies from 0.3 THz (10 cm-1) up to 1000 THz (33000 cm-1) using different spectroscopic methods. At room temperatures the spectra of pure gold and of AuFe are typically metallic with the scattering rate of carriers in AuFe being significantly enlarged due to scattering on localized magnetic moments of Fe ions. In the spin-glass phase of AuFe at T = 5 K a pseudogap in the conductivity spectrum is detected with the magnitude close to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) energy for AuFe: Delta(RKKY) = 2.2 meV. The origin of the pseudogap is associated with partial localization of electrons which mediate the RKKY interaction between localized magnetic Fe centers.

Mobility gap in intermediate valent TmSe

The infrared optical conductivity of intermediate valence compound TmSe reveals clear signatures for hybridization of light $d$- and heavy f-electronic states with m* ~ 1.6 m_0 and m* ~ 16 m_0, respectively. At moderate and high temperatures, the metal-like character of the heavy carriers dominate the low-frequency response while at low temperatures (T_N < T < 100 K) a gap-like feature is observed in the conductivity spectra below 10 meV which is assigned to be a mobility gap due to localization of electrons on local Kondo singlets, rather than a hybridization gap in the density of states.

Circular polarization dependent study of the microwave photoconductivity in a two-dimensional electron system

The polarization dependence of the low field microwave photoconductivity and absorption of a two-dimensional electron system has been investigated in a quasi-optical setup in which linear and any circular polarization can be produced in-situ. The microwave induced resistance oscillations and the zero resistance regions are notedly immune to the sense of circular polarization. This observation is discrepant with a number of proposed theories. Deviations only occur near the cyclotron resonance absorption where an unprecedented large resistance response is observed.

Electronic and vibrational properties of low-dimensional perovskites Sr$_{1-y}$La$_y$NbO$_{3.5-x}$

By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and polarization-dependent infrared reflectivity measurements the electronic and vibrational properties of low-dimensional perovskites Sr$_{1-y}$La$_y$NbO$_{3.5-x}$ were studied along different crystal directions. The electronic behavior strongly depends on the oxygen and La content, including quasi-one-dimensional metallic and ferroelectric insulating behavior. An extremely small energy gap at the Fermi level is found for SrNbO$_{3.41}$ and SrNbO$_{3.45}$ along the conducting direction at low temperature, suggestive for a Peierls-type instability. Despite the similar nominal carrier density, for Sr$_{0.8}$La$_{0.2}$NbO$_{3.50}$ the quasi-one-dimensional metallic character is suppressed and no gap opening is observed, which can be explained by differences in the crystal structure. Electron-phonon interaction appears to play an important role in this series of compounds.

Anisotropic Charge Modulation in Ladder Planes of Sr_14-xCa_xCu_24O_41

The charge response of the ladders in Sr_14-xCa_xCu_24O_41 is characterized by dc resistivity, low frequency dielectric and optical spectroscopy in all three crystallographic directions. The collective charge-density wave screened mode is observed in the direction of the rungs for x=0, 3 and 6, in addition to the mode along the legs. For x=8 and 9, the charge-density-wave response along the rungs fully vanishes, while the one along the legs persists. The transport perpendicular to the planes is always dominated by hopping.

In-plane optical conductivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$: Reduced superconducting condensate and residual Drude-like response

Temperature dependences of the optical spectra of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x$=0.12 and 0.15 were carefully examined for a polarization parallel to the CuO$_2$-plane over a wide frequency range down to 8 cm$^{-1}$. Selection of well-characterized crystals enabled us to measure purely in-plane polarized spectra without any additional peak. The weight of superconducting (SC) condensate estimated from the missing area in $σ_1(ω$) well agrees with the estimate from the slope of $σ_2(ω$) vs 1/$ω$ plot, showing no evidence that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum-rule is violated in the optical spectrum. We demonstrate that the optically estimated SC condensate is much smaller than the value obtained from the $μ$SR measurement of magnetic penetration depth. We also find an anomalous increase of conductivity in sub-millimeter region towards $ω$=0 below $T_c$, which suggests the microscopic inhomogeneity in the superconducting state. Both observations are discussed in relation with the inhomogeneous electronic state that might be inherent to high-$T_c$ cuprates.
