Probing exotic phenomena at the interface of nuclear and particle physics with the electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms: A unique window to hadronic and semi-leptonic CP violation

The current status of electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms which involves the synergy between atomic experiments and three different theoretical areas -- particle, nuclear and atomic is reviewed. Various models of particle physics that predict CP violation, which is necessary for the existence of such electric dipole moments, are presented. These include the standard model of particle physics and various extensions of it. Effective hadron level combined charge conjugation (C) and parity (P) symmetry violating interactions are derived taking into consideration different ways in which a nucleon interacts with other nucleons as well as with electrons. Nuclear structure calculations of the CP-odd nuclear Schiff moment are discussed using the shell model and other theoretical approaches. Results of the calculations of atomic electric dipole moments due to the interaction of the nuclear Schiff moment with the electrons and the P and time-reversal (T) symmetry violating tensor-pseudotensor electron-nucleus are elucidated using different relativistic many-body theories. The principles of the measurement of the electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms are outlined. Upper limits for the nuclear Schiff moment and tensor-pseudotensor coupling constant are obtained combining the results of atomic experiments and relativistic many-body theories. The coefficients for the different sources of CP violation have been estimated at the elementary particle level for all the diamagnetic atoms of current experimental interest and their implications for physics beyond the standard model is discussed. Possible improvements of the current results of the measurements as well as quantum chromodynamics, nuclear and atomic calculations are suggested.

Improved limits on the hadronic and semi-hadronic CP violating parameters and role of a dark force carrier in the electric dipole moment of $^{199}$Hg

Combining the recently reported electric dipole moment (EDM) of $^{199}$Hg atom due to breaking of parity and time-reversal symmetries with the improved relativistic atomic calculations, precise limits on the tensor-pseudotensor (T-PT) electron-nucleus (e-N) coupling coefficient and the nuclear Schiff moment (NSM) interactions are determined. Using these limits with the nuclear calculations, we infer limits on the EDMs of neutron and proton as $d_n < 2.2 \times 10^{-26} |e| \rm{cm}$ and $d_p < 2.1 \times 10^{-25} |e| \rm{cm}$, respectively, and on the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) parameter and the combined up- and down- quark chromo-EDMs as $|\barθ| < 1.1 \times 10^{-10}$ and $|\tilde{d}_u - \tilde{d}_d| < 5.5 \times 10^{-27} |e|\rm{cm}$, respectively. These are the best limits till date to probe new sources of CP violation beyond the standard model (SM) from a diamagnetic atom. Role of considering a capable many-body method to account the electron correlation effects to all orders for inferring the above limits has been highlighted. From this analysis, constraints on the T-PT e-N coupling coefficient with a large range of mass of a possible dark matter carrier $χ$ between the atomic electrons and nucleus are given.

Plasma-screening effects in the atrophysically relevant He-like and Li-like Mg and Fe ions

The effect of plasma environment on the atomic energy levels of He-like and Li-like Mg and Fe ions have been studied using Debye model. The equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOMCC) and Fock-space coupled-cluster (FSCC) formalisms in the relativistic frame work have been adopted to describe the atomic states and the energy levels of the above plasma embedded ions. Salient features of these methods have been described to account the two electron screening effects through the Debye potentials. The two-body screening potential has been derived in the multipole expansion form to evaluate the reduced matrix elements in solving the equation of motion. Using this extended model, we have also predicted that quasi-degeneracy among the energy states having same principal quantum number ($n$) but different angular momentum ($l$) is slacken, whereas fine structure splitting is unaffected with increasing plasma strength. These knowledge are useful in estimatingradiative opacity, photoionization cross sections, line intensities, etc of the aforementioned astrophysical plasmas.

Unexpectedly large difference of the electron density at the nucleus in the 4p $^2$P$_{1/2,3/2}$ fine-structure doublet of Ca$^+$

We measured the isotope shift in the $^2$S$_{1/2}$-$^2$P$_{3/2}$ (D2) transition in singly-ionized calcium ions using photon recoil spectroscopy. The high accuracy of the technique enables us to resolve the difference between the isotope shifts of this transition to the previously measured isotopic shifts of the $^2$S$_{1/2}$-$^2$P$_{1/2}$ (D1) line. This so-called splitting isotope shift is extracted and exhibits a clear signature of field shift contributions. From the data we were able to extract the small difference of the field shift coefficient and mass shifts between the two transitions with high accuracy. This J-dependence is of relativistic origin and can be used to benchmark atomic structure calculations. As a first step, we use several ab initio atomic structure calculation methods to provide more accurate values for the field shift constants and their ratio. Remarkably, the high-accuracy value for the ratio of the field shift constants extracted from the experimental data is larger than all available theoretical predictions.

Determination of magic wavelengths for the $7s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-7p ~ {^2}P_{3/2,1/2}$ transitions in Fr atom

Magic wavelengthsfor the $7S_{1/2}-7P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in Fr were reported by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} in [Phys. Rev. A 93, 043407 (2016)]. These $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ were determined by plotting dynamic polarizabilities ($α$) of the involved states with the above transitions against a desired range of wavelength. Electric dipole (E1) matrix elements listed in [J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data 36, 497 (2007)], from the measured lifetimes of the $7P_{1/2,3/2}$ states and from the calculations considering core-polarization effects in the relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) method, were used to determine $α$. However, contributions from core correlation effects and from the E1 matrix elements of the $7P-7S$, $7P-8S$ and $7P-6D$ transitions to $α$ of the $7P$ states were ignored. In this work, we demonstrate importance of these contributions and improve accuracies of $α$ further by replacing the E1 matrix elements taken from the HFR method by the values obtained employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Our static $α$ are found to be in excellent agreement with the other available theoretical results; whereas substituting the E1 matrix elements used by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} give very small $α$ values for the $7P$ states. Owing to this, we find disagreement in $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ reported by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} for linearly polarized light; especially at wavelengths close to the D-lines and in the infrared region. As a consequence, a $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ reported at 797.75 nm which was seen supporting a blue detuned trap in their work is now estimated at 771.03 nm and is supporting a red detuned trap. Also, none of our results match with the earlier results for circularly polarized light. Moreover, our static values of $α$ will be very useful for guiding experiments to carry out their measurements.

Magnetic sublevel independent magic wavelengths: Application in the Rb and Cs atoms

A generic scheme to trap atoms at the magic wavelengths ($λ_{\rm{magic}}$s) that are independent of vector and tensor components of the interactions of the atoms with the external electric field is presented. The $λ_{\rm{magic}}$s for the laser cooling D2 lines in the Rb and Cs atoms are demonstrated and their corresponding polarizability values without vector and tensor contributions are given. Consequently, these $λ_{\rm{magic}}$s are independent of magnetic sublevels and hyperfine levels of the atomic states involved in the transition, thus, can offer unique approaches to carry out many high precision measurements with minimal systematics. Inevitably, the proposed technique can also be used for electronic or hyperfine transitions in other atomic systems.

Oscillation Frequencies for Simultaneous Trapping of Heteronuclear Alkali Atoms

We investigate oscillation frequencies for simultaneous trapping of more than one type of alkali atoms in a common optical lattice. For this purpose, we present numerical results for magic trapping conditions, where the oscillation frequencies for two different kind of alkali atoms using laser lights in the wavelength range 500-1200 nm are same. These wavelengths will be of immense interest for studying static and dynamic properties of boson-boson, boson-fermion, fermion-fermion, and boson-boson-boson mixtures involving different isotopes of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr alkali atoms. In addition to this, we were also able to locate a magic wavelength around 808.1 nm where all the three Li, K, and Rb atoms are found to be suitable for oscillating at the same frequency in a common optical trap.

Comparing magic wavelengths for the $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions of Cs using circularly and linearly polarized light

We demonstrate magic wavelengths, at which external electric field produces null differential Stark shifts, for the $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in the Cs atom due to circularly polarized light. In addition, we also obtain magic wavelengths using linearly polarized light, in order to verify the previously reported values, and make a comparative study with the values obtained for circularly polarized light. A number of these wavelengths are found to be in the optical region and could be of immense interest to experimentalists for carrying out high precision measurements. To obtain these wavelengths, we have calculated dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground, $6p ~{^2}P_{1/2}$ and $6p ~{^2}P_{3/2}$ states of Cs. We use the available precise values of the electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of the transitions that give the dominant contributions from the lifetime measurements of the excited states. Other significantly contributing E1 matrix elements are obtained by employing a relativistic coupled-cluster singles and doubles method. The accuracies of the dynamic polarizabilities are substantiated by comparing the static polarizability values with the corresponding experimental results.

Dispersion coefficients for the interaction of inert gas atoms with alkali and alkaline earth ions and alkali atoms with their singly ionized ions

We report the dispersion coefficients for the interacting inert gas atoms with the alkali ions, alkaline earth ions and alkali atoms with their singly charged ions. We use our relativistic coupled-cluster method to determine dynamic dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the alkali atoms and singly ionized alkaline earth atoms, whereas a relativistic random phase approximation approach has been adopted to evaluate these quantities for the closed-shell configured inert gas atoms and the singly and doubly ionized alkali and alkaline earth atoms, respectively. Accuracies of these results are adjudged from the comparison of their static polarizability values with their respective experimental results. These polarizabilities are further compared with the other theoretical results. Reason for the improvement in the accuracies of our estimated dispersion coefficients than the data listed in [At. Data and Nucl. Data Tables 101, 58 (2015)] are discussed. Results for some of the atom-ion interacting systems were not available earlier, these results and the other reported improved results will be very useful for the comprehensive understanding of the collisional physics involving these atom-atom and atom-ion interactions in the cold atom and atom-ion hybrid trapping experiments at the low-temperature regime.

Plasma-screening effects on the electronic structure of multiply charged Al ions using Debye and ionsphere models

We analyze atomic structures of plasma embedded aluminum (Al) atom and its ions in the weakly and strongly coupling regimes. The plasma screening effects in these atomic systems are accounted for using the Debye and ion sphere (IS) potentials for the weakly coupling and strongly coupling plasmas, respectively. Within the Debye model, special attention is given to investigate the spherical and non-spherical plasma-screening effects considering in the electron-electron interaction potential. The relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) method has been employed to describe the relativistic and electronic correlation effects in the above atomic systems. The variation in the ionization potentials (IPs) and excitation energies (EEs) of the plasma embedded Al ions are presented. It is found that the atomic systems exhibit more stability when the exact screening effects are taken into account. It is also showed that in the presence of strongly coupled plasma environment, the highly ionized Al ions show blue and red shifts in the spectral lines of the transitions between the states with same and different principal quantum numbers, respectively. Comparison among the results obtained from the Debye and IS models are also carried out considering similar plasma conditions.

An Optimized Ion Trap Geometry to Measure Quadrupole Shifts of $^{171}$Yb$^+$ Clocks

We propose a new ion-trap geometry to carry out accurate measurements of the quadrupole shifts in the $^{171}$Yb-ion. This trap will produce nearly ideal harmonic potential where the quadrupole shifts due to the anharmonic components can be reduced by four orders of magnitude. This will be useful to reduce the uncertainties in the clock frequency measurements of the $6s~{^2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 4f^{13} 6s^2 ~{^2}F_{7/2}$ and $6s~{^2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 5d ~{^2}D_{3/2}$ transitions, from which we can deduce precise values of the quadrupole moments ($Θ$s) of the $4f^{13} 6s^2 ~{^2}F_{7/2}$ and $5d ~{^2}D_{3/2}$ states. Moreover, it may be able to affirm validity of the measured $Θ$ value of the $4f^{13} 6s^2 ~{^2}F_{7/2}$ state where three independent theoretical studies defer almost by one order in magnitude from the measurement. We also perform calculations of $Θ$s using the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) method. We use these $Θ$ values to estimate quadrupole shift that can be measured in our proposed ion trap experiment.

Dispersion coefficients for the interaction of Cs atom with different material media

Largely motivated by a number of applications, the dispersion ($C_3$) coefficients for the interaction of a Cs atom with different material media such as Au (metal), Si (semiconductor) and various dielectric surfaces like SiO$_2$, SiN$_{\rm{x}}$, sapphire and YAG are determined using accurate values of the dynamic polarizabilities of the Cs atom obtained employing the relativistic coupled-cluster approach and the dynamic dielectric constants of the walls. Moreover, we also give the retardation coefficients in the graphical representation as functions of separation distances to describe the interaction potentials between the Cs atom with the above considered material media. For the easy access to the interaction potentials at a given distance of separation, we devise a simple working functional fitting form for the retarded coefficients in terms of two parameters that are quoted for each medium.

Enhanced spin-dependent parity non-conservation effect in the $7s {}^2S_{1/2} \to 6d {}^2D_{5/2}$ transition in Fr: A possibility for unambiguous detection of nuclear anapole moment

Employing the relativistic coupled-cluster method, comparative studies of the parity non-conserving electric dipole amplitudes for the $7s \ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 6d \ ^2D_{5/2}$ transitions in $^{210}$Fr and $^{211}$Fr isotopes have been carried out. It is found that these transition amplitudes, sensitive only to the nuclear spin dependent effects, are enhanced by more than 3 orders compared to the low-lying $S-D_{5/2}$ transitions in Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$ owing to the very large contributions from the electron core-polarization effects in Fr. This translates to a relatively large and, in principle, measurable induced light shift, which would be a signature of nuclear spin dependent parity nonconservation that is dominated by the nuclear anapole moment in a heavy atom like Fr. A plausible scheme to measure this quantity using the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC) facility at Tohoku University has been outlined.

Conforming the measured lifetimes of the $5d \ ^2D_{3/2,5/2}$ states in Cs with theory

We find very good agreement between our theoretically evaluated lifetimes of the $5d \ ^2D_{3/2}$ and $5d \ ^2D_{5/2}$ states of Cs with the experimental values reported in [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 57}, 4204 (1998)], which were earlier evinced to be disagreeing with an earlier rigorous theoretical study [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 69}, 040501(R) (2004)] and with another precise measurement [Opt. Lett. {\bf 21}, 74 (1996)]. In this work, we have carried out calculations of the radiative transition matrix elements using many variants of relativistic many-body methods, mainly in the coupled-cluster theory framework, and analyze propagation of the electron correlation effects to elucidate their roles for accurate evaluations of the matrix elements. We also demonstrate contributions explicitly from the Dirac-Coulomb interactions, frequency independent Breit interaction and lower order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects. Uncertainties to these matrix elements due to different possible sources of errors are estimated. By combining our calculated radiative matrix elements with the experimental values of the transition wavelengths, we obtain the transition probabilities due to both the allowed and lower order forbidden channels. Adding these quantities together, the lifetimes of the above two states are determined precisely and plausible reasons for the reported inconsistencies between the earlier theoretical calculations and the experimental results have been pointed out.

Theoretical studies of the long lifetimes of the $6d \ ^2D_{3/2,5/2}$ states in Fr: Implications for parity nonconservation measurements

The lifetimes of the $6d \ ^2D_{3/2}$ and $6d \ ^2D_{5/2}$ states in Fr are estimated to be 540(10) ns and 1704(32) ns respectively. They are determined by calculating the radiative transition amplitudes of the allowed electric dipole (E1) and the forbidden electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) channels using the second order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT(2)) and the coupled-cluster (CC) method at different levels of approximation in the relativistic framework. These long lifetimes and the large electric dipole parity non conserving amplitudes of $7s \ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 6d \ ^2D_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions strongly favour Fr as a leading candidate for the measurement of parity nonconservation arising from the neutral current weak interaction and the nuclear anapole moment.

Magic wavelengths in the alkaline earth ions

We present magic wavelengths for the $nS$ - $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $nS$ - $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions, with the respective ground and first excited $D$ states principal quantum numbers $n$ and $m$, in the Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth ions for linearly polarized lights by plotting dynamic polarizatbilities of the $nS$, $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ states of the ions. These dynamic polarizabilities are evaluated by employing a relativistic all-order perturbative method and their accuracies are ratified by comparing their static values with the available high precision experimental or other theoretical results. Moreover, some of the magic wavelengths identified by us in Ca$^+$ concurs with the recent measurements reported in [{\bf Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 223001 (2015)}]. Knowledge of these magic wavelengths are propitious to carry out many proposed high precision measurements trapping the above ions in the electric fields with the corresponding frequencies.

Appraising nuclear octupole moment contributions to the hyperfine structures in $^{211}$Fr

Hyperfine structures of $^{211}$Fr due to the interactions of magnetic dipole ($μ$), electric quadrupole ($Q$) and magnetic octupole ($Ω$) moments with the electrons are investigated using the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory with an approximation of singles, doubles and important valence triples excitations in the perturbative approach. Validity of our calculations are substantiated by comparing the results with their available experimental values. Its $Q$ value has also been elevated by combining the measured hyperfine structure constant of the $7p \ ^2P_{3/2}$ state with our improved calculation. Considering the preliminary value of $Ω$ from the nuclear shell-model, its contributions to the hyperfine structures up to the $7d \ ^2D_{5/2}$ low-lying states in $^{211}$Fr are estimated. Energy splittings of the hyperfine transitions in many states have been assessed to find out suitability to carry out their precise measurements so that $Ω$ of $^{211}$Fr can be inferred from them unambiguously.

Dispersion coefficients for the interactions of the alkali and alkaline-earth ions and inert gas atoms with a graphene layer

Largely motivated by a number of applications, the van der Waals dispersion coefficients ($C_3$s) of the alkali ions (Li$^+$, Na$^+$, K$^+$ and Rb$^+$), the alkaline-earth ions (Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$) and the inert gas atoms (He, Ne, Ar and Kr) with a graphene layer are determined precisely within the framework of Dirac model. For these calculations, we have evaluated the dynamic polarizabilities of the above atomic systems very accurately by evaluating the transition matrix elements employing relativistic many-body methods and using the experimental values of the excitation energies. The dispersion coefficients are, finally, given as functions of the separation distance of an atomic system from the graphene layer and the ambiance temperature during the interactions. For easy extraction of these coefficients, we give a logistic fit to the functional forms of the dispersion coefficients in terms of the separation distances at the room temperature.
