Periodic Co/Nb pseudo spin-valve for cryogenic memory

We present a new study of magnetic structures with controllable effective exchange energy for Josephson switches and memory. As a basis for a weak link we propose to use a periodic structure comprised of ferromagnetic (F) layers spaced by thin superconductors (s). Our calculations based on Usadel equations show that switching from parallel (P) to antiparallel (AP) alignment of neighboring F layers can lead to a significant enhancement of the critical current through the junction. To control magnetic alignment we propose to use periodic system where unit cell is a pseudo spin-valve $F_1$/s/$F_2$/s with $F_1$ and $F_2$ two magnetic layers having different coercive fields. In order to check feasibility of controllable switching between AP and P states through the \emph{whole} periodic structure we prepared a superlattice [Co(1.5nm)/Nb(8nm)/Co(2.5nm)/Nb(8nm)]$_6$ between two superconducting layers of Nb(25nm). Neutron scattering showed that parallel and antiparallel alignment can be organized by using of magnetic fields of only several tens of Oersted.

Pseudospin-lattice coupling in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

Spin-orbit entangled magnetic dipoles, often referred to as pseudospins, provide a new avenue to explore novel magnetism inconceivable in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit, but the nature of their low-energy interactions remains to be understood. We present a comprehensive study of the static magnetism and low-energy pseudospin dynamics in the archetypal spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. We find that in order to understand even basic magnetization measurements, a formerly overlooked in-plane anisotropy is fundamental. In addition to magnetometry, we use neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify and quantify the interactions that determine the global symmetry of the system and govern the linear responses of pseudospins to external magnetic felds and their low-energy dynamics. We find that a pseudospin-only Hamiltonian is insufficient for an accurate description of the magnetism in Sr2IrO4 and that pseudospin-lattice coupling is essential. This finding should be generally applicable to other pseudospin systems with sizable orbital moments sensitive to anisotropic crystalline environments.

Stabilization of three-dimensional charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ via epitaxial growth

Incommensurate charge order (CO) has been identified as the leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in all major families of layered copper oxides, but the perplexing variety of CO states in different cuprates has confounded investigations of its impact on the transport and thermodynamic properties. The three-dimensional (3D) CO observed in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ in high magnetic fields is of particular interest, because quantum transport measurements have revealed detailed information about the corresponding Fermi surface. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to demonstrate 3D-CO in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ in the absence of magnetic fields. The resonance profiles indicate that Cu sites in the charge-reservoir layers participate in the CO state, and thus efficiently transmit CO correlations between adjacent CuO$_2$ bilayer units. The results offer fresh perspectives for experiments elucidating the influence of 3D-CO on the electronic properties of cuprates without the need to apply high magnetic fields.

Light-Induced Metastable State in Charge-Ordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

We report temporal changes in Raman-scattering spectra of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ single crystals under exposure to red laser light polarized along the crystallographic $a$-axis. A recent publication by Bakr et al. (Phys. Rev. B 88 214517 (2013)) identified new Raman-active modes that appear upon cooling below $T \sim 200$ K, and attributed these modes to charge ordering phenomena observed in x-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on the same materials. Here we report that the intensities of these modes depend not only on temperature and oxygen content, but also on the cumulative photon dose absorbed by the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ samples. The light-induced changes in the Raman spectra exhibit a stretched-exponential time dependence, with a characteristic time that increases strongly upon cooling. They also depend strongly on doping and are most pronounced for $x \sim 0.6$. In fully illuminated samples, the mode intensities exhibit a monotonic temperature dependence indicative of a second-order phase transition. The findings indicate a metastable state generated by light-induced rearrangement of the oxygen dopants. We hypothesize that the new Raman phonons are associated with a three-dimensional charge-ordered state induced by light illumination, analogous to a state that was recently observed by resonant x-ray scattering in oxygen-disordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films.

Infrared phonon spectra of quasi-one-dimensional Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ and Ta$_2$NiS$_5$

Using a combination of infrared ellipsometry, time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, and far-infrared reflectometry we have obtained the $ac$-plane complex dielectric function of monoclinic ($C2/c$) Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ and orthorhombic ($Cmcm$) Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ single crystals. The identified dipole-active phonon modes polarized along $a$ and $c$ axes are in good agreement with density functional theory calculations. With increasing temperature the $a$-axis phonon modes of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ become poorly discernible, as they are superimposed on the electronic background which gradually fills the energy gap near the monoclinic-to-orthorhombic phase transition temperature $T_c$ = 326 K. In Ta$_2$NiS$_5$, which does not exhibit such a structural transition and remains orthorhombic down to low temperatures, the $a$-axis phonon modes are superimposed on a persistent broad electronic mode centered near 16 meV. We attribute this difference to strongly overlapping exciton-phonon complexes in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, as opposed to isolated instances of the same in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$, and find this to be in good agreement with an excitonic insulator state below $T_c$ in the former, as compared to the absence of one in the latter.

Site-selective Probe of Magnetic Excitations in Rare-earth Nickelates using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We have used high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study a thin film of NdNiO$_3$, a compound whose unusual spin- and bond-ordered electronic ground state has been of long-standing interest. Below the magnetic ordering temperature, we observe well-defined collective magnon excitations along different high-symmetry directions in momentum space. The magnetic spectra depend strongly on the incident photon energy, which we attribute to RIXS coupling to different local electronic configurations of the expanded and compressed NiO$_6$ octahedra in the bond-ordered state. Both the noncollinear magnetic ground state and the observed site-dependent magnon excitations are well described by a model that assumes strong competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange and ferromagnetic double-exchange interactions. Our study provides direct insight into the magnetic dynamics and exchange interactions of the rare-earth nickelates, and demonstrates that RIXS can serve as a site-selective probe of magnetism in these and other materials.

Coincident onset of charge density wave order at a quantum critical point in underdoped YBCO

The recently demonstrated x-ray scattering approach using a free electron laser with a high field pulsed magnet has opened new opportunities to explore the charge density wave (CDW) order in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Using this approach, we substantially degrade the superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 33 T to investigate the onset of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ at low temperatures near a putative quantum critical point (QCP) at $p_1\sim $ 0.08 holes per Cu. We find no CDW can be detected in a sample with a doping concentration less than $p_1$. Our results indicate that the onset of the CDW ground state lies inside the zero-field superconducting dome, and broken translational symmetry is associated with the putative QCP at $p_1$

Emergent topological spin structures in a centrosymmetric cubic perovskite

The skyrmion crystal (SkX) characterized by a multiple-q helical spin modulation has been reported as a unique topological state that competes with the single-q helimagnetic order in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here we report the discovery of a rich variety of multiple-q helimagnetic spin structures in the centrosymmetric cubic perovskite SrFeO3. On the basis of neutron diffraction measurements, we have identified two types of robust multiple-q topological spin structures that appear in the absence of external magnetic fields: an anisotropic double-q spin spiral and an isotropic quadruple-q spiral hosting a three-dimensional lattice of hedgehog singularities. The present system not only diversifies the family of SkX host materials, but furthermore provides an experimental missing link between centrosymmetric lattices and topological helimagnetic order. It also offers perspectives for integration of SkXs into oxide electronic devices.

Coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$

Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. Overall, our findings indicate a coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprates.

Intrinsic charge dynamics in high-Tc AFeAs(O,F) superconductors

We report the first determination of the in-plane complex optical conductivity of 1111 high-Tc superconducting iron oxypnictide single crystals PrFeAsO0.6F0.35 and thin films SmFeAsO1-xFx by means of bulk-sensitive conventional and micro-focused infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and time-domain THz transmission spectroscopy. A strong itinerant contribution is found to exhibit a dramatic difference in coherence between the crystal and the film. Using extensive temperature-dependent measurements of THz transmission we identify a previously undetected 2.5-meV collective mode in the optical conductivity of SmFeAs(O,F), which is strongly suppressed at Tc and experiences an anomalous T-linear softening and narrowing below T*=110K>>Tc. The suppression of the infrared absorption in the superconducting state reveals a large optical superconducting gap with a similar gap ratio 2D=kBTc=7 in both materials, indicating strong pairing.

Magnetic and Superconducting Phase Diagram of Nb/Gd/Nb trilayers

We report on a study of the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of Nb(25nm)/Gd($d_f$)/Nb(25nm) hybrid structures of a superconductor/ ferromagnet (S/F) type. The structural characterization of the samples, including careful determination of the layer thickness, was performed using neutron and X-ray scattering with the aid of depth sensitive mass-spectrometry. The magnetization of the samples was determined by SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry and the presence of magnetic ordering for all samples down to the thinnest Gd(0.8nm) layer was shown. The analysis of the neutron spin asymmetry allowed us to prove the absence of magnetically dead layers in junctions with Gd interlayer thickness larger than one monolayer. The measured dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(d_f)$ has a damped oscillatory behavior with well defined positions of the minimum at $d_f$=3nm and the following maximum at $d_f$=4nm; the behavior, which is in qualitative agreement with the prior work (J.S. Jiang et al, PRB 54, 6119). The analysis of the $T_c(d_f)$ dependence based on Usadel equations showed that the observed minimum at $d_f$=3nm can be described by the so called "$0$" to "$π$" phase transition of highly transparent S/F interfaces with the superconducting correlation length $ξ_f \approx 4$nm in Gd. This penetration length is several times higher than for strong ferromagnets like Fe, Co or Ni, simplifying thus preparation of S/F structures with $d_f \sim ξ_f$ which are of topical interest in superconducting spintronics.

Tailoring the electronic properties of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ via epitaxial strain

We report the synthesis of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ thin films on NdCaAlO$_{4}$ (110), LaAlO$_3$ (100) and LaSrAlO$_4$ (001) substrates and show that epitaxial strain induces a transition from the Mott-insulating phase of bulk Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ into a metallic phase. Magnetometry and spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveal a low-temperature, small-moment ferromagnetic state in metallic Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ films.

Rapid Suppression of the Charge Density Wave in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ under Hydrostatic Pressure

We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $\sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ demonstrate that this very rapid effect cannot be explained by pressure-induced modification of the doping level and highlight the different role of external pressure and doping in tuning the phase diagram of the cuprates. Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the CDW formation and its interplay with superconductivity.

Raman scattering study of vibrational and magnetic excitations in Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have measured the doping and temperature dependence of lattice vibrations and magnetic excitations in the prototypical doped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ (x=0, 0.015, and 0.10). Our findings show that the pseudospin-lattice coupling -- responsible for the renormalization of several low energy phonon modes -- is preserved even when long-range magnetic order is suppressed by doping. In our most highly doped sample, the single magnon (Gamma-point) excitation disappears while the two-magnon mode softens and becomes heavily damped. Doping induced electron-phonon coupling is also observed in a higher energy phonon mode. We observe two different electron-phonon interaction channels, which provide evidence of the coexistence of fluctuating magnetic moments and mobile carriers in doped iridates.

Digital modulation of the nickel valence state in a cuprate-nickelate heterostructure

Layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy has been used to synthesize cuprate-nickelate multilayer structures of composition (La$_2$CuO$_4$)$_m$/LaO/(LaNiO$_3$)$_n$. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that these structures allow a clean separation of dopant and doped layers. Specifically, the LaO layer separating cuprate and nickelate blocks provides an additional charge that, according to density functional theory calculations, is predominantly accommodated in the interfacial nickelate layers. This is reflected in an elongation of bond distances and changes in valence state, as observed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the predicted charge disproportionation in the nickelate interface layers leads to a thickness-dependent metal-to-insulator transition for $n=2$, as observed in electrical transport measurements. The results exemplify the perspectives of charge transfer in metal-oxide multilayers to induce doping without introducing chemical and structural disorder.

Re-entrant charge order in overdoped (Bi,Pb)$_{2.12}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ outside the pseudogap regime

Charge modulations are considered as a leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates, and their relationship to Fermi surface reconstructions and to the pseudogap state is an important subject of current research. Overdoped cuprates, on the other hand, are widely regarded as conventional Fermi liquids without collective electronic order. For the overdoped (Bi,Pb)2.12Sr1.88CuO6+δ (Bi2201) high-temperature superconductor, here we report resonant x-ray scattering measurements revealing incommensurate charge order reflections, with correlation lengths of 40-60 lattice units, that persist up to at least 250K. Charge order is markedly more robust in the overdoped than underdoped regime but the incommensurate wave vectors follow a common trend; moreover it coexists with a single, unreconstructed Fermi surface, without pseudogap or nesting features, as determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This re-entrant charge order is reproduced by model calculations that consider a strong van Hove singularity within a Fermi liquid framework.

Crossover from Collective to Incoherent Spin Excitations in Superconducting Cuprates Probed by Detuned Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-$L_3$ absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle/hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescence-like shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. The results are discussed in the light of recent transport experiments indicating a quantum phase transition near optimal doping.

Superconductivity drives magnetism in delta-doped La2CuO4

The understanding of the interplay between different orders in a solid is a key challenge in highly correlated electronic systems. In real systems this is even more difficult since disorder can have a strong influence on the subtle balance between these orders and thus can obscure the interpretation of the observed physical properties. Here we present a study on delta-doped La2CuO4 superlattices. By means of molecular beam epitaxy whole LaO-layers were periodically replaced through SrO-layers providing a charge reservoir, yet reducing the level of disorder typically present in doped cuprates to an absolute minimum. The induced superconductivity and its interplay with the antiferromagnetic order is studied by means of low-energy muSR. We find a quasi-2D superconducting state which couples to the antiferromagnetic order in a non-trivial way. Below the superconducting transition temperature, the magnetic volume fraction increases strongly. The reason could be a charge redistribution of the free carriers due to the opening of the superconducting gap which is possible due to the close proximity and low disorder between the different ordered regions.
