Thermodynamic evidence for nematic phase transition at the onset of pseudogap in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$

A central issue in the quest to understand the superconductivity in cuprates is the nature and origin of the pseudogap state, which harbours anomalous electronic states such as Fermi arc, charge density wave (CDW), and $d$-wave superconductivity. A fundamentally important, but long-standing controversial problem has been whether the pseudogap state is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by broken symmetries below the onset temperature $T^*$. Electronic nematicity, a fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry breaking, has emerged as a key feature inside the pseudogap regime, but the presence or absence of a nematic phase transition and its relationship to the pseudogap remain unresolved. Here we report thermodynamic measurements of magnetic torque in the underdoped regime of orthorhombic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ with a field rotating in the CuO$_2$ plane, which allow us to quantify magnetic anisotropy with exceptionally high precision. Upon entering the pseudogap regime, the in-plane anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility increases after exhibiting a distinct kink at $T^*$. Our doping dependence analysis reveals that this anisotropy is preserved below $T^*$ even in the limit where the effect of orthorhombicity is eliminated. In addition, the excess in-plane anisotropy data show a remarkable scaling behaviour with respect to $T/T^*$ in a wide doping range. These results provide thermodynamic evidence that the pseudogap onset is associated with a second-order nematic phase transition, which is distinct from the CDW transition that accompanies translational symmetry breaking. This suggests that nematic fluctuations near the pseudogap phase boundary have a potential link to the strange metallic behaviour in the normal state, out of which high-$T_c$ superconductivity emerges.

High field charge order across the phase diagram of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$

In hole-doped cuprates there is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. In $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ charge order emerges in two steps: a 2D order found at zero field and at high temperature inside the pseudogap phase, and a 3D order that is superimposed below the superconducting transition $T_c$ when superconductivity is weakened by a magnetic field. Several issues still need to be addressed such as the effect of disorder, the relationship between those charge orders and their respective impact on the Fermi surface. Here, we report high magnetic field sound velocity measurements of the 3D charge order in underdoped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ in a large doping range. We found that the 3D charge order exists over the same doping range as its 2D counterpart, indicating an intimate connection between the two distinct orders. Moreover, we argue that the Fermi surface is reconstructed above the onset temperature of 3D charge order.

Higgs mode and its decay in a two dimensional antiferromagnet

Condensed-matter analogs of the Higgs boson in particle physics allow insights into its behavior in different symmetries and dimensionalities. Evidence for the Higgs mode has been reported in a number of different settings, including ultracold atomic gases, disordered superconductors, and dimerized quantum magnets. However, decay processes of the Higgs mode (which are eminently important in particle physics) have not yet been studied in condensed matter due to the lack of a suitable material system coupled to a direct experimental probe. A quantitative understanding of these processes is particularly important for low-dimensional systems where the Higgs mode decays rapidly and has remained elusive to most experimental probes. Here, we discover and study the Higgs mode in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet using spin-polarized inelastic neutron scattering. Our spin-wave spectra of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ directly reveal a well-defined, dispersive Higgs mode, which quickly decays into transverse Goldstone modes at the antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector. Through a complete mapping of the transverse modes in the reciprocal space, we uniquely specify the minimal model Hamiltonian and describe the decay process. We thus establish a novel condensed matter platform for research on the dynamics of the Higgs mode.

Transfer of magnetic order and anisotropy through epitaxial integration of 3$d$ and 4$f$ spin systems

Resonant x-ray scattering at the Dy $M_5$ and Ni $L_3$ absorption edges was used to probe the temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetic order in epitaxial LaNiO$_3$-DyScO$_3$ superlattices. For superlattices with 2 unit cell thick LaNiO$_3$ layers, a commensurate spiral state develops in the Ni spin system below 100 K. Upon cooling below $T_{ind} = 18$ K, Dy-Ni exchange interactions across the LaNiO$_3$-DyScO$_3$ interfaces induce collinear magnetic order of interfacial Dy moments as well as a reorientation of the Ni spins to a direction dictated by the strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy of Dy. This transition is reversible by an external magnetic field of 3 T. Tailored exchange interactions between rare-earth and transition-metal ions thus open up new perspectives for the manipulation of spin structures in metal-oxide heterostructures and devices.

Perovskite Substrates Boost the Thermopower of Cobaltate Thin Films at High Temperatures

Transition metal oxides are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications, because they are stable at high temperature and because strong electronic correlations can generate large Seebeck coefficients, but their thermoelectric power factors are limited by the low electrical conductivity. We report transport measurements on Ca3Co4O9 films on various perovskite substrates and show that reversible incorporation of oxygen into SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates activates a parallel conduction channel for p-type carriers, greatly enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the film-substrate system at temperatures above 450 °C. Thin-film structures that take advantage of both electronic correlations and the high oxygen mobility of transition metal oxides thus open up new perspectives for thermopower generation at high temperature.

Optically induced lattice deformations, electronic structure changes, and enhanced superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6.48

Resonant optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrational modes in the normal state of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x induces a transient state with optical properties similar to those of the equilibrium superconducting state. Amongst these, a divergent imaginary conductivity and a plasma edge are transiently observed in the photo-stimulated state. Femtosecond hard x-ray diffraction experiments have been used in the past to identify the transient crystal structure in this non-equilibrium state. Here, we start from these crystallographic features and theoretically predict the corresponding electronic rearrangements that accompany these structural deformations. Using density functional theory, we predict enhanced hole-doping of the CuO2 planes. The empty chain Cu dy2-z2 orbital is calculated to strongly reduce in energy, which would increase c-axis transport and potentially enhance the interlayer Josephson coupling as observed in the THz-frequency response. From these calculations, we predict changes in the soft x-ray absorption spectra at the Cu L-edge. Femtosecond x-ray pulses from a free electron laser are used to probe these changes in absorption at two photon energies along this spectrum, and provide data consistent with these predictions.

Giant exciton Fano resonance in quasi-one-dimensional Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

We report the complex dielectric function of the quasi-one-dimensional chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, which exhibits a structural phase transition that has been attributed to exciton condensation below $T_c = 326$ K, and of the isostructural Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ which does not exhibit such a transition. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have detected exciton doublets with pronounced Fano lineshapes in both the compounds. The exciton Fano resonances in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ display an order of magnitude higher intensity than those in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$. In conjunction with prior theoretical work by E. Rashba, we attribute this observation to the giant oscillator strength of spatially extended exciton-phonon bound states in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. The formation of exciton-phonon complexes in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ and Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is confirmed by the pronounced temperature dependence of sharp interband transitions in the optical spectra, whose peak energies and widths scale with the thermal population of optical phonon modes. The description of the optically excited states in terms of strongly overlapping exciton complexes is in good agreement with the hypothesis of an EI ground state.

Optical melting of the transverse Josephson plasmon: a comparison between bilayer and trilayer cuprates

We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations offer new experimental perspective in the context of the physics of light-enhanced interlayer coupling in various cuprates.

Comparative study of LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ heterostructures grown by pulsed laser deposition and oxide molecular beam epitaxy

Variations in growth conditions associated with different deposition techniques can greatly affect the phase stability and defect structure of complex oxide heterostructures. We synthesized superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the large band gap insulator LaAlO3 by atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and compared their crystallinity, microstructure as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images and resistivity. The MBE samples show a higher density of stacking faults, but smoother interfaces and generally higher electrical conductivity. Our study identifies the opportunities and challenges of MBE and PLD growth and serves as a general guide for the choice of deposition technique for perovskite oxides.

Accessing the Full Superconducting Dome in Pristine YBa2Cu3O6+x Under Pressure

We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.

Persistent paramagnons deep in the metallic phase of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates.

On the Explanation of the Paramagnetic Meissner Effect in Superconductor/Ferromagnet Heterostructures

An increase of the magnetic moment in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers V(40nm)/F [F$=$Fe(1,3nm), Co(3nm), Ni(3nm)] was observed using SQUID magnetometry upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature Tc in magnetic fields of 10 Oe to 50 Oe applied parallel to the sample surface. A similar increase, often called the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), was observed before in various superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet systems. To explain the PME effect in the presented S/F bilayers a model based on a row of vortices located at the S/F interface is proposed. According to the model the magnetic moment induced below Tc consists of the paramagnetic contribution of the vortex cores and the diamagnetic contribution of the vortex-free region of the S layer. Since the thickness of the S layer is found to be 3-4 times less than the magnetic field penetration depth, this latter diamagnetic contribution is negligible. The model correctly accounts for the sign, the approximate magnitude and the field dependence of the paramagnetic and the Meissner contributions of the induced magnetic moment upon passing the superconducting transition of a ferromagnet/superconductor bilayer.

Magnetic state of Nb(1-7nm)/Cu$_{30}$Ni$_{70}$(6nm) superlattices revealed by Polarized Neutron Reflectometry and SQUID magnetometry

We report results of a magnetic characterization of [Cu$_{30}$Ni$_{70}$(6nm)]$_{20}$ (x=1-7nm) superlattices using Polarized Neutron Reflectometry (PNR) and SQUID magnetometry. The study has shown that the magnetic moment of the structures growths almost linearly from H = 0 to H$_{sat}$ = 1.3kOe which is an indirect evidence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling of the magnetic moments in neighbouring layers. PNR, however, did not detect any in-plane AF coupling. Taking into account the out-of-plane easy axis of the Cu$_{30}$Ni$_{70}$ layers, this may mean that only the out-of-plane component of the magnetic moments are AF coupled.

The magnetic phase diagram of underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy inferred from torque magnetization and thermal conductivity

Strong evidence for charge-density correlation in the underdoped phase of the cuprate YBa2Cu3Oy was obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resonant x-ray scatter- ing. The fluctuations were found to be enhanced in strong magnetic fields. Recently, 3D (three dimensional) charge-density wave (CDW) formation with long-range order (LRO) was observed by x-ray diffraction in H >15 T. To elucidate how the CDW transition impacts the pair condensate, we have used torque magnetization to 45 T and thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$ to construct the magnetic phase diagram in untwinned crystals with hole density p = 0.11. We show that the 3D CDW transitions appear as sharp features in the susceptibility and $κ_{xx}$ at the fields HK and Hp, which define phase boundaries in agreement with spectroscopic techniques. From measurements of the melting field Hm(T) of the vortex solid, we obtain evidence for two vortex solid states below 8 K. At 0.5 K, the pair condensate appears to adjust to the 3D CDW by a sharp transition at 24 T between two vortex solids with very different shear moduli. At even higher H (42 T) the second vortex solid melts to a vortex liquid which survives to fields well above 45 T. de Haas-van Alphen oscillations appear at fields 24-28 T, below the lower bound for the upper critical field Hc2.

Influence of apical oxygen on the extent of in-plane exchange interaction in cuprate superconductors

In high Tc superconductors the magnetic and electronic properties are determined by the probability that valence electrons virtually jump from site to site in the CuO2 planes, a mechanism opposed by on-site Coulomb repulsion and favored by hopping integrals. The spatial extent of the latter is related to transport properties, including superconductivity, and to the dispersion relation of spin excitations (magnons). Here, for three antiferromagnetic parent compounds (single-layer Bi2Sr0.99La1.1CuO6+delta, double-layer Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3O6 and infinite-layer CaCuO2) differing by the number of apical atoms, we compare the magnetic spectra measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering over a significant portion of the reciprocal space and with unprecedented accuracy. We observe that the absence of apical oxygens increases the in-plane hopping range and, in CaCuO2, it leads to a genuine 3D exchange-bond network. These results establish a corresponding relation between the exchange interactions and the crystal structure, and provide fresh insight into the materials dependence of the superconducting transition temperature.

Dynamical decoherence of the light induced interlayer coupling in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$

Optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrations in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$ has been shown to enhance its c-axis superconducting-phase rigidity, as evidenced by a transient blue shift of the equilibrium inter-bilayer Josephson plasma resonance. Surprisingly, a transient c-axis plasma mode could also be induced above T$_{c}$ by the same apical oxygen excitation, suggesting light activated superfluid tunneling throughout the pseudogap phase of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$. However, despite the similarities between the above T$_{c}$ transient plasma mode and the equilibrium Josephson plasmon, alternative explanations involving high mobility quasiparticle transport should be considered. Here, we report an extensive study of the relaxation of the light-induced plasmon into the equilibrium incoherent phase. These new experiments allow for a critical assessment of the nature of this mode. We determine that the transient plasma relaxes through a collapse of its coherence length rather than its carrier (or superfluid) density. These observations are not easily reconciled with quasiparticle interlayer transport, and rather support transient superfluid tunneling as the origin of the light-induced interlayer coupling in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$.

Neutron spin-echo study of the critical dynamics of spin-5/2 antiferromagnets in two and three dimensions

We report a neutron spin-echo study of the critical dynamics in the $S=5/2$ antiferromagnets MnF$_2$ and Rb$_2$MnF$_4$ with three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) spin systems, respectively, in zero external field. Both compounds are Heisenberg antiferromagnets with a small uniaxial anisotropy resulting from dipolar spin-spin interactions, which leads to a crossover in the critical dynamics close to the Néel temperature, $T_N$. By taking advantage of the $μ\text{eV}$ energy resolution of the spin-echo spectrometer, we have determined the dynamical critical exponents $z$ for both longitudinal and transverse fluctuations. In MnF$_2$, both the characteristic temperature for crossover from 3D Heisenberg to 3D Ising behavior and the exponents $z$ in both regimes are consistent with predictions from the dynamical scaling theory. The amplitude ratio of longitudinal and transverse fluctuations also agrees with predictions. In Rb$_2$MnF$_4$, the critical dynamics crosses over from the expected 2D Heisenberg behavior for $T\gg T_N$ to a scaling regime with exponent $z = 1.387(4)$, which has not been predicted by theory and may indicate the influence of long-range dipolar interactions.

Doping dependent charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates

Understanding the interplay between charge order (CO) and other phenomena (e.g. pseudogap, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity) is one of the central questions in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The discovery that similar forms of CO exist in both hole- and electron-doped cuprates opened a path to determine what subset of the CO phenomenology is universal to all the cuprates. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to measure the charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates (La2-xCexCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4) and their relationship to antiferromagnetism, pseudogap, and superconductivity. Detailed measurements of Nd2-xCexCuO4 show that CO is present in the x = 0.059 to 0.166 range, and that its doping dependent wavevector is consistent with the separation between straight segments of the Fermi surface. The CO onset temperature is highest between x = 0.106 and 0.166, but decreases at lower doping levels, indicating that it is not tied to the appearance of antiferromagnetic correlations or the pseudogap. Near optimal doping, where the CO wavevector is also consistent with a previously observed phonon anomaly, measurements of the CO below and above the superconducting transition temperature, or in a magnetic field, show that the CO is insensitive to superconductivity. Overall these findings indicate that, while verified in the electron-doped cuprates, material-dependent details determine whether the CO correlations acquire sufficient strength to compete for the ground state of the cuprates.
