Effect of iron content and potassium substitution in A$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Tl) superconductors: a Raman-scattering investigation

We have performed Raman-scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of the superconductors K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 32 K), Tl$_{0.5}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 29 K), and Tl$_{0.5}$Rb$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 31 K), as well as of the insulating compound KFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$. To interpret our results, we have made first-principles calculations for the phonon modes in the ordered iron-vacancy structure of K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$. The modes we observe can be assigned very well from our symmetry analysis and calculations, allowing us to compare Raman-active phonons in the AFeSe compounds. We find a clear frequency difference in most phonon modes between the superconducting and non-superconducting potassium crystals, indicating the fundamental influence of iron content. By contrast, substitution of K by Tl or Rb in A$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ causes no substantial frequency shift for any modes above 60 cm$^{-1}$, demonstrating that the alkali-type metal has little effect on the microstructure of the FeSe layer. Several additional modes appear below 60 cm$^{-1}$ in Tl- and Rb-substituted samples, which are vibrations of heavier Tl and Rb ions. Finally, our calculations reveal the presence of "chiral" phonon modes, whose origin lies in the chiral nature of the K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ structure.

Two-magnon Raman scattering in A$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ systems: competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order

We have performed Raman-scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of A$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ superconductors of several compositions. We find a broad, asymmetric peak around 1600 cm$^{-1}$ (200 meV), which we identify as a two-magnon process involving optical magnons. The intensity of the two-magnon peak falls sharply on entering the superconducting phase. This effect, which is entirely absent in the non-superconducting system KFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$, requires a strong mutual exclusion between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity arising from proximity effects within regions of microscale phase separation.

Vacancy ordering and phonon spectrum in the Fe superconductor K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$

We have performed Raman-scattering measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the recently discovered Fe-based superconductor K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 32 K). At least thirteen phonon modes were observed in the wave number range 10$-$300 cm$^{-1}$. The spectra possess a four-fold symmetry indicative of bulk vacancy order in the Fe-deficient planes. We perform a vibration analysis based on first-principles calculations, which both confirms the ordered structure and allows a complete mode assignment. We observe an anomaly at $T_c$ in the 180 cm$^{-1}$ $A_g$ mode, which indicates a rather specific type of electron-phonon coupling.

Local spin fluctuations in iron-based superconductors: 77Se and 87Rb NMR measurements of Tl0.47Rb0.34Fe1.63Se2

We report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of the intercalated iron selenide superconductor (Tl, Rb)$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$ ($T_c = 32$ K). Single-crystal measurements up to 480 K on both $^{77}$Se and $^{87}$Rb nuclei show a superconducting phase with no magnetic order. The Knight shifts $K$ and relaxation rates $1/T_1T$ increase very strongly with temperature above $T_c$, before flattening at 400 K. The quadratic $T$-dependence and perfect proportionality of both $K$ and $1/T_1T$ data demonstrate their origin in paramagnetic moments. A minimal model for this pseudogap-like response is not a missing density of states but two additive contributions from the itinerant electronic and local magnetic components, a framework unifying the $K$ and $1/T_1 T$ data in many iron-based superconductors.

Partial order and finite-temperature phase transitions in Potts models on irregular lattices

We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the 4-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Union- Jack lattice using tensor-based numerical methods. We present strong evidence for a previously unknown, "entropy-driven," finite-temperature phase transition to a partially ordered state. From the thermodynamics of Potts models on the diced and centered diced lattices, we propose that finite-temperature transitions and partially ordered states are ubiquitous on irregular lattices.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions (2D). To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in 1D. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from 1D to 2D physics.

Multicolored quantum dimer models, resonating valence-bond states, color visons, and the triangular-lattice t_2g spin-orbital system

The spin-orbital model for triply degenerate t_2g electrons on a triangular lattice has been shown to be dominated by dimers: the phase diagram contains both strongly resonating, compound spin-orbital dimer states and quasi-static, spin-singlet valence-bond (VB) states. To elucidate the nature of the true ground state in these different regimes, the model is mapped to a number of quantum dimer models (QDMs), each of which has three dimer colors. The generic multicolored QDM, illustrated for the two- and three-color cases, possesses a topological color structure, "color vison" excitations, and broad regions of resonating VB phases. The specific models are analyzed to gain further insight into the likely ground states in the superexchange and direct-exchange limits of the electronic Hamiltonian, and suggest a strong tendency towards VB order in all cases.

Complete bond-operator theory of the two-chain spin ladder

The discovery of the almost ideal, two-chain spin-ladder material (C_5H_12N)_2CuBr_4 has once again focused attention on this most fundamental problem in low-dimensional quantum magnetism. Within the bond-operator framework, three qualitative advances are introduced which extend the theory to all finite temperatures and magnetic fields in the gapped regime. This systematic description permits quantitative and parameter-free experimental comparisons, which are presented for the specific heat, and predictions for thermal renormalization of the triplet magnon excitations.

Direct Observation of Magnon Fractionalization in the Quantum Spin Ladder

We measure by inelastic neutron scattering the spin excitation spectra as a function of applied magnetic field in the quantum spin-ladder material (C5H12N)2CuBr4. Discrete magnon modes at low fields in the quantum disordered phase and at high fields in the saturated phase contrast sharply with a spinon continuum at intermediate fields characteristic of the Luttinger-liquid phase. By tuning the magnetic field, we drive the fractionalization of magnons into spinons and, in this deconfined regime, observe both commensurate and incommensurate continua.

Field-Controlled Magnetic Order in the Quantum Spin-Ladder System (Hpip)2CuBr4

Neutron diffraction is used to investigate the field-induced, antiferromagnetically ordered state in the two-leg spin-ladder material (Hpip)2CuBr4. This "classical" phase, a consequence of weak interladder coupling, is nevertheless highly unconventional: its properties are influenced strongly by the spin Luttinger-liquid state of the ladder subunits. We determine directly the order parameter (transverse magnetization), the ordering temperature, the spin structure, and the critical exponents around the transition. We introduce a minimal, microscopic model for the interladder coupling and calculate the quantum fluctuation corrections to the mean-field interaction.

Thermodynamics of the Spin Luttinger-Liquid in a Model Ladder Material

The phase diagram in temperature and magnetic field of the metal-organic, two-leg, spin-ladder compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 is studied by measurements of the specific heat and the magnetocaloric effect. We demonstrate the presence of an extended spin Luttinger-liquid phase between two field-induced quantum critical points and over a broad range of temperature. Based on an ideal spin-ladder Hamiltonian, comprehensive numerical modelling of the ladder specific heat yields excellent quantitative agreement with the experimental data across the complete phase diagram.

Quantum Magnets under Pressure: Controlling Elementary Excitations in TlCuCl3

We follow the evolution of the elementary excitations of the quantum antiferromagnet TlCuCl3 through the pressure-induced quantum critical point, which separates a dimer-based quantum disordered phase from a phase of long-ranged magnetic order. We demonstrate by neutron spectroscopy the continuous emergence in the weakly ordered state of a low-lying but massive excitation corresponding to longitudinal fluctuations of the magnetic moment. This mode is not present in a classical description of ordered magnets, but is a direct consequence of the quantum critical point.

Static impurities in the S=3/2 kagome lattice

We consider the effects of doping the S=3/2 kagome lattice with static, nonmagnetic impurities. By exact diagonalization calculations on small clusters we deduce the local spin correlations and magnetization distribution around a vacancy. As in the S=1/2 kagome lattice, in the vicinity of the impurity we find an extended region where the spin correlations are altered as a consequence of frustation relief, and no indications for the formation of local moments. We discuss the implications of our results for local probe measurements on S=3/2 kagome materials.

High-dimensional fractionalization and spinon deconfinement in pyrochlore antiferromagnets

The ground states of Klein type spin models on the pyrochlore and checkerboard lattice are spanned by the set of singlet dimer coverings, and thus possess an extensive ground--state degeneracy. Among the many exotic consequences is the presence of deconfined fractional excitations (spinons) which propagate through the entire system. While a realistic electronic model on the pyrochlore lattice is close to the Klein point, this point is in fact inherently unstable because any perturbation $ε$ restores spinon confinement at $T = 0$. We demonstrate that deconfinement is recovered in the finite--temperature region $ε\ll T \ll J$, where the deconfined phase can be characterized as a dilute Coulomb gas of thermally excited spinons. We investigate the zero--temperature phase diagram away from the Klein point by means of a variational approach based on the singlet dimer coverings of the pyrochlore lattices and taking into account their non--orthogonality. We find that in these systems, nearest neighbor exchange interactions do not lead to Rokhsar-Kivelson type processes.

Multiple Magnon Modes and Consequences for the Bose-Einstein Condensed Phase in BaCuSi2O6

The compound BaCuSi2O6 is a quantum magnet with antiferromagnetic dimers of S = 1/2 moments on a quasi-2D square lattice. We have investigated its spin dynamics by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals with an energy resolution considerably higher than in an earlier study. We observe multiple magnon modes, indicating clearly the presence of magnetically inequivalent dimer sites. This more complex spin Hamiltonian leads to a distinct form of magnon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) phase with a spatially modulated condensate amplitude.

Quantum phase diagram of the generalized ionic Hubbard model for AB$_{n}$ chains

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard model for the AB$_{N-1}$ chain with filling 1/N, where $N$ is the number of atoms per unit cell. In the strong-coupling limit, a charge transition takes place from a band insulator (BI) to a correlated insulator (CI) for increasing on-site repulsion $U$ and positive on-site energy difference $Δ$ (energy at A sites lower than at B sites). In the weak-coupling limit, a bosonization analysis suggests that for $N > 2$ the physics is qualitatively similar to the case $N = 2$ which has already been studied: an intermediate phase emerges, which corresponds to a bond-ordered ferroelectric insulator (FI) with spontaneously broken inversion symmetry. We have determined the quantum phase diagram for the cases $N = 3$ and $N = 4$ from the crossings of energy levels of appropriate excited states, which correspond to jumps in the charge and spin Berry phases, and from the change of sign of the localization parameter $z_{L}^{c}$. From these techniques we find that, quantitatively, the BI and FI phases are broader for $N > 2$ than when $N = 2$, in agreement with the bosonization analysis. Calculations of the Drude weight and $z_{L}^{c}$ indicate that the system is insulating for all parameters, with the possible exception of the boundary between the BI and FI phases.

Quantum Statistics of Interacting Dimer Spin Systems

The compound TlCuCl3 represents a model system of dimerized quantum spins with strong interdimer interactions. We investigate the triplet dispersion as a function of temperature by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. By comparison with a number of theoretical approaches we demonstrate that the description of Troyer, Tsunetsugu, and Wuertz [Phys. Rev. B 50, 13515 (1994)] provides an appropriate quantum statistical model for dimer spin systems at finite temperatures, where many-body correlations become particularly important.

Exchange Interactions and High-Energy Spin States in Mn_12-acetate

We perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular nanomagnet Mn_12-acetate to measure the excitation spectrum up to 45meV (500K). We isolate magnetic excitations in two groups at 5-6.5meV (60-75K) and 8-10.5meV (95-120K), with higher levels appearing only at 27meV (310K) and 31meV (360K). From a detailed characterization of the transition peaks we show that all of the low-energy modes appear to be separate S = 9 excitations above the S = 10 ground state, with the peak at 27meV (310K) corresponding to the first S = 11 excitation. We consider a general model for the four exchange interaction parameters of the molecule. The static susceptibility is computed by high-temperature series expansion and the energy spectrum, matrix elements and ground-state spin configuration by exact diagonalization. The theoretical results are matched with experimental observation by inclusion of cluster anisotropy parameters, revealing strong constraints on possible parameter sets. We conclude that only a model with dominant exchange couplings J_1 ~ J_2 ~ 5.5meV (65K) and small couplings J_3 ~ J_4 ~ 0.6meV (7K) is consistent with the experimental data.
