Circulating-current states and ring-exchange interactions in cuprates

We consider the consequences for circulating-current states of a cyclic, four-spin, ``ring-exchange'' interaction of the type shown recently to be significant in cuprate systems. The real-space Hartree-Fock approach is used to establish the existence of charge-current and spin-current phases in a generalized Hubbard model for the CuO_2 planes in cuprates. We compare the results of the Hartree-Fock approximation with the correlated states renormalized by Gutzwiller projection factors which allows us to gauge the qualitative effects of projection to no double site occupancy. We find that charge flux states may be competitive in cuprates, whereas spin flux states are suppressed in the strongly correlated regime. We then include the ring-exchange interaction and demonstrate its effect on current-carrying states both at and away from half-filling.

Exchange constants and spin dynamics in Mn12-acetate

We have obtained new inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data for the molecular magnet Mn12-acetate which exhibit at least six magnetic peaks in the energy range 5-35 meV. These are compared with a microscopic Heisenberg model for the 12 quantum spins localised on the Mn ions, coupled by four inequivalent magnetic exchange constants. A fit to the magnetic susceptibility under the constraint that the spin of the ground state be S=10 yields two dominant exchange constants of very similar value, J1 ~ J2 ~ 65 K (~ 5.5 meV), and two smaller exchange constants J3 and J4. We compute the low-lying excitations by exact numerical diagonalisation and demonstrate that the parameters determined from the ground state and susceptibility fit provide qualitative agreement with the excitations observed by INS.

Kosmotropes and chaotropes: modelling preferential exclusion, binding and aggregate stability

Kosmotropic cosolvents added to an aqueous solution promote the aggregation of hydrophobic solute particles, while chaotropic cosolvents act to destabilise such aggregates. We discuss the mechanism for these phenomena within an adapted version of the two-state Muller-Lee-Graziano model for water, which provides a complete description of the ternary water/cosolvent/solute system for small solute particles. This model contains the dominant effect of a kosmotropic substance, which is to enhance the formation of water structure. The consequent preferential exclusion both of cosolvent molecules from the solvation shell of hydrophobic particles and of these particles from the solution leads to a stabilisation of aggregates. By contrast, chaotropic substances disrupt the formation of water structure, are themselves preferentially excluded from the solution, and thereby contribute to solvation of hydrophobic particles. We use Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate at the molecular level the preferential exclusion or binding of cosolvent molecules in the solvation shell of hydrophobic particles, and the consequent enhancement or suppression of aggregate formation. We illustrate the influence of structure-changing cosolvents on effective hydrophobic interactions by modelling qualitatively the kosmotropic effect of sodium chloride and the chaotropic effect of urea.

Detection of topological transitions by transport through molecules and nanodevices

We analyze the phase transitions of an interacting electronic system weakly coupled to free-electron leads by considering its zero-bias conductance. This is expressed in terms of two effective impurity models for the cases with and without spin degeneracy. We demonstrate using the half-filled ionic Hubbard ring that the weight of the first conductance peak as a function of external flux or of the difference in gate voltages between even and odd sites allows one to identify the topological charge transition between a correlated insulator and a band insulator.

Spin-charge separation in Aharonov-Bohm rings of interacting electrons

We investigate the properties of strongly correlated electronic models on a flux-threaded ring connected to semi-infinite free-electron leads. The interference pattern of such an Aharonov-Bohm ring shows sharp dips at certain flux values, determined by the filling, which are a consequence of spin-charge separation in a nanoscopic system.

Phase Diagram of the Heisenberg Spin Ladder with Ring Exchange

We investigate the phase diagram of a generalized spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on a ladder with rung, leg, diagonal, and ring-exchange interactions. We consider the exactly soluble models associated with the problem, obtain the exact ground states which exist for certain parameter regimes, and apply a variety of perturbative techniques in the regime of strong ring-exchange coupling. By combining these approaches with considerations related to the discrete Z_4 symmetry of the model, we present the complete phase diagram.

Solvent-induced micelle formation in a hydrophobic interaction model

We investigate the aggregation of amphiphilic molecules by adapting the two-state Muller-Lee-Graziano model for water, in which a solvent-induced hydrophobic interaction is included implicitly. We study the formation of various types of micelle as a function of the distribution of hydrophobic regions at the molecular surface. Successive substitution of non-polar surfaces by polar ones demonstrates the influence of hydrophobicity on the upper and lower critical solution temperatures. Aggregates of lipid molecules, described by a refinement of the model in which a hydrophobic tail of variable length interacts with different numbers of water molecules, are stabilized as the length of the tail increases. We demonstrate that the essential features of micelle formation are primarily solvent-induced, and are explained within a model which focuses only on the alteration of water structure in the vicinity of the hydrophobic surface regions of amphiphiles in solution.

Field- and pressure-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions in TlCuCl_3

Thallium copper chloride is a quantum spin liquid of S = 1/2 Cu^2+ dimers. Interdimer superexchange interactions give a three-dimensional magnon dispersion and a spin gap significantly smaller than the dimer coupling. This gap is closed by an applied hydrostatic pressure of approximately 2kbar or by a magnetic field of 5.6T, offering a unique opportunity to explore the both types of quantum phase transition and their associated critical phenomena. We use a bond-operator formulation to obtain a continuous description of all disordered and ordered phases, and thus of the transitions separating these. Both pressure- and field-induced transitions may be considered as the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet magnon excitations, and the respective phases of staggered magnetic order as linear combinations of dimer singlet and triplet modes. We focus on the evolution with applied pressure and field of the magnetic excitations in each phase, and in particular on the gapless (Goldstone) modes in the ordered regimes which correspond to phase fluctuations of the ordered moment. The bond-operator description yields a good account of the magnetization curves and of magnon dispersion relations observed by inelastic neutron scattering under applied fields, and a variety of experimental predictions for pressure-dependent measurements.

Static impurities in the kagome lattice: dimer freezing and mutual repulsion

We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length scales. We calculate the local magnetization induced by doped impurities, and consider its implications for nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on known kagome systems.

Magnon Dispersion in the Field-Induced Magnetically Ordered Phase of TlCuCl3

The magnetic properties of the interacting dimer system TlCuCl3 are investigated within a bond-operator formulation. The observed field-induced staggered magnetic order perpendicular to the field is described as a Bose condensation of magnons which are linear combinations of dimer singlet and triplet modes. This technique accounts for the magnetization curve and for the field dependence of the magnon dispersion curves observed by high-field neutron scattering measurements.

Vertical and Diagonal Stripes in the Extended Hubbard Model

We extend previous real-space Hartree-Fock studies of static stripe stability to determine the phase diagram of the Hubbard model with anisotropic nearest-neighbor hopping t, by varying the on-site Coulomb repulsion U and investigating locally stable structures for representative hole doping levels x=1/8 and x=1/6. We also report the changes in stability of these stripes in the extended Hubbard model due to next-neighbor hopping t' and to a nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V.

Spin dynamics and coherent tunnelling in the molecular magnetic rings Fe_6 and Fe_8

We present detailed calculations of low-energy spin dynamics in the ``ferric wheel'' systems Na:Fe_6 and Cs:Fe_8 in a magnetic field. We compute by exact diagonalisation the low-energy spectra and matrix elements for total-spin and N'eel-vector components, and thus the time-dependent correlation functions of these operators. Comparison of our results with the semiclassical theory of coherent quantum tunnelling of the N'eel vector demonstrates the validity of a two-state description for the low-energy dynamics of ferric wheels. We discuss the implications of our results for mesoscopic quantum coherent phenomena, and for the experimental techniques to observe them, in molecular magnetic rings.

Suppression of static stripe formation by next-neighbor hopping

We show from real-space Hartree-Fock calculations within the extended Hubbard model that next-nearest neighbor (t') hopping processes act to suppress the formation of static charge stripes. This result is confirmed by investigating the evolution of charge-inhomogeneous corral and stripe phases with increasing t' of both signs. We propose that large t' values in YBCO prevent static stripe formation, while anomalously small t' in LSCO provides an additional reason for the appearance of static stripes only in these systems.

Absence of effective spins 1/2 induced by nonmagnetic impurities in a class of low-dimensional magnets

We show that doping a Majumdar--Ghosh chain with non-magnetic impurities does {\it not} produce almost free spins 1/2. The difference between this system and other spin liquids, such as unfrustrated spin ladders, is illustrated in the context of the general dimerized, frustrated spin chain. By detailed analysis of the excitation spectra of finite chains with two impurities, we investigate the evolution of the screening affecting impurity-induced free spins, and of the sign and magnitude of their effective interactions. We comment on a possible connection to impurity-doping experiments in CuGeO_3.

Lattice anisotropy as microscopic origin of static stripes in cuprates

Structural distortions in cuprate materials offer a microscopic origin for anisotropies in electron transport in the basal plane. Using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, we consider the ground states of the anisotropic Hubbard (t_x \ne t_y) and t-J (t_x \ne t_y, J_x \ne J_y) models. Symmetrical but inhomogeneous (``polaronic'') charge structures in the isotropic models are altered even by rather small anisotropies to one-dimensional, stripe-like features. We find two distinct types of stripe, namely uniformly filled, antiphase domain walls and non-uniform, half-filled, in-phase ones. We characterize their properties, energies and dependence on the model parameters, including filling and anisotropy in t (and J). We discuss the connections among these results, other theoretical studies and experimental observation.

Island phases and charge order in two-dimensional manganites

The ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an antiferromagnetic interaction between localized spins is a minimal description of the competing kinetic t and magnetic K energy terms which generate the rich physics of manganite systems. Motivated by the discovery in one dimension of homogeneous ``island phases'', we consider the possibility of analogous phases in higher dimensions. We characterize the phases present at commensurate fillings, and consider in detail the effects of phase separation in all filling and parameter regimes. We deduce that island and flux phases are stable for intermediate values of K/t at the commensurate fillings n = 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. We discuss the connection of these results to the charge and magnetic ordering observed in a wide variety of manganite compounds.

Magnetization in Molecular Iron Rings

The organometallic ring molecules Fe_6 and Fe_10 are leading examples of a class of nanoscopic molecular magnets, which have been of intense recent interest both for their intrinsic magnetic properties and as candidates for the observation of macroscopic quantum coherent phenomena. Torque magnetometry experiments have been performed to measure the magnetization in single crystals of both systems. We provide a detailed interpretation of these results, with a view to full characterization of the material parameters. We present both the most accurate numerical simulations performed to date for ring molecules, using Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques, and a semiclassical description for purposes of comparison. The results permit quantitative analysis of the variation of critical fields with angle, of the nature and height of magnetization and torque steps, and of the width and rounding of the plateau regions in both quantities.

Magnetic properties of (VO)_2P_2O_7: two-plane structure and spin-phonon interactions

Detailed experiments on single-crystal (VO)_2P_2O_7 continue to reveal new and unexpected features. We show that a model composed of two, independent planes of spin chains with frustrated magnetic coupling is consistent with nuclear magnetic resonance and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The pivotal role of PO_4 groups in mediating intrachain exchange interactions explains both the presence of two chain types and their extreme sensitivity to certain lattice vibrations, which results in the strong magnetoelastic coupling observed by light scattering. We compute the respective modifications of the spin and phonon dynamics due to this coupling, and illustrate their observable consequences on the phonon frequencies, magnon dispersions, static susceptibility and specific heat.
