Effects of electron irradiation on resistivity and London penetration depth of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x \leq$ 0.34) iron - pnictide superconductor

Irradiation with 2.5 MeV electrons at doses up to 5.2 $\times$10$^{19}$ electrons/cm$^2$ was used to introduce point-like defects in single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with $x=$ 0.19 ($T_c=$ 14 K), $x=$ 0.26 ($T_c=$ 32 K) and 0.34 ($T_c=$ 39 K) to study the superconducting gap structure by probing the effect of non-magnetic scattering on electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and London penetration depth, $ λ(T)$. For all compositions, the irradiation suppressed the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$ and increased resistivity. The low - temperature behavior of $λ(T)$ is best described by the power - law function, $Δλ(T) = A(T/T_c)^n$. While substantial suppression of $T_c$ supports $s_{\pm}$ pairing mechanism, in samples close to the optimal doping, $x=$ 0.26 and 0.34, the exponent $n$ remained high ($n \geq 3$) indicating robust full superconducting gaps. For the $x=$ 0.19 composition, exhibiting coexistence of superconductivity and long - range magnetism, the suppression of $T_c$ was much more rapid and the exponent $n$ decreased toward dirty limit of $n$ = 2. In this sample, the irradiation also suppressed the temperature of structural/magnetic transition, $T_{sm}$, from 103 K to 98 K consistent with the itinerant nature of the magnetic order. Our results suggest that underdoped compositions, especially in the coexisting regime are most susceptible to non-magnetic scattering and imply that in multi-band Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductors, the ratio of the inter-band to intra-band pairing strength, and associated gap anisotropy, increases upon the departure from the optimal doping.

Critical Behavior of the SDW Transition in Underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x <=0.05): 75As NMR Investigation

We investigate the nature of the SDW (Spin Density Wave) transition in the underdoped regime of an iron-based high Tc superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 by 75As NMR, with primary focus on a composition with x = 0.02 (T_SDW = 99 K).We demonstrate that critical slowing down toward the three dimensional SDW transition sets in at the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition, Ts = 105 K, suggesting strong interplay between structural distortion and spin correlations. In the critical regime between Ts and T_SDW, the dynamical structure factor of electron spins S(q,Wn) measured with the longitudinal NMR relaxation rate 1/T1 exhibits a divergent behavior obeying a power law, 1/T1~S(q, Wn)~(T/T_SDW-1)^a with the critical exponent a ~ 0.33.

Pseudogap in underdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ as seen via optical conductivity

We report the observation of a pseudogap in the \emph{ab}-plane optical conductivity of underdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x = 0.2$ and 0.12) single crystals. Both samples show prominent gaps opened by a spin density wave (SDW) order and superconductivity at the transition temperatures $T_{\it SDW}$ and $T_c$, respectively. In addition, we observe an evident pseudogap below $T^{\ast} \sim$ 75 K, a temperature much lower than $T_{\it SDW}$ but much higher than $T_{c}$. A spectral weight analysis shows that the pseudogap is closely connected to the superconducting gap, indicating the possibility of its being a precursor of superconductivity. The doping dependence of the gaps is also supportive of such a scenario.

Hidden $T$-Linear Scattering Rate in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ Revealed by Optical Spectroscopy

The optical properties of Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ have been determined in the normal state for a number of temperatures over a wide frequency range. Two Drude terms, representing two groups of carriers with different scattering rates ($1/τ$), well describe the real part of the optical conductivity, $σ_{1}(ω)$. A "broad" Drude component results in an incoherent background with a $T$-independent $1/τ_b$, while a "narrow" Drude component reveals a $T$-linear $1/τ_n$ resulting in a resistivity $ρ_n \equiv 1/σ_{1n}(ω\rightarrow 0)$ also linear in temperature. An arctan($T$) low-frequency spectral weight is also a strong evidence for a $T$-linear 1/$τ$. Comparison to other materials with similar behavior suggests that the $T$-linear $1/τ_n$ and $ρ_n$ in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ originate from scattering from spin fluctuations and hence that an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point is likely to exist in the superconducting dome.

Effect of Heavy-Ion Irradiation on Superconductivity in Single Crystals of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 Pnictide Superconductor

The London penetration depth was measured in optimally doped Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 crystals, with and without columnar defects produced by 1.4 GeV 208Pb irradiation. The low temperature behavior of unirradiated samples was consistent with a fully gapped superconducting state with a minimum energy gap delta_min/(k_B T_C) = 1. Similar gap values were observed for irradiation levels corresponding to mean column-column separations of 32 nm and 22 nm. At very high irradiation levels (column-column separation of 10 nm) a T^2 power law was observed below Tc/3, most likely due to elevated scattering. Neither the location nor the sharpness of the superconducting transition was affected by irradiation. The data provides evidence for an s+/- pairing state.

New Phase Induced by Pressure in the Iron-Arsenide Superconductor K-Ba122

The electrical resistivity rho of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 was measured in applied pressures up to 2.6 GPa for four underdoped samples, with x = 0.16, 0.18, 0.19 and 0.21. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T_N, detected as a sharp anomaly in rho(T), decreases linearly with pressure. At pressures above around 1.0 GPa, a second sharp anomaly is detected at a lower temperature T_0, which rises with pressure. We attribute this second anomaly to the onset of a phase that causes a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. This new phase expands with increasing x and it competes with superconductivity. We discuss the possibility that a second spin-density wave orders at T_0, with a Q vector distinct from that of the spin-density wave that sets in at T_N.

Filamentary superconductivity across the phase diagram of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$

We show magnetotransport results on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.0 \leq x \leq 0.13$) single crystals. We identify the low temperature resistance step at 23 K in the parent compound with the onset of filamentary superconductivity (FLSC), which is suppressed by an applied magnetic field in a similar manner to the suppression of bulk superconductivity (SC) in doped samples. FLSC is found to persist across the phase diagram until the long range antiferromagnetic order is completely suppressed. A significant suppression of FLSC occurs for $0.02<x<0.04$, the doping concentration where bulk SC emerges. Based on these results and the recent report of an electronic anisotropy maximum for 0.02 $\leq x \leq$ 0.04 [Science 329, 824 (2010)], we speculate that, besides spin fluctuations, orbital fluctuations may also play an important role in the emergence of SC in iron-based superconductors.

From d-wave to s-wave pairing in the iron-pnictide superconductor (Ba,K)Fe2As2

The nature of the pairing state in iron-based superconductors is the subject of much debate. Here we argue that in one material, the stoichiometric iron pnictide KFe2As2, there is overwhelming evidence for a d-wave pairing state, characterized by symmetry-imposed vertical line nodes in the superconducting gap. This evidence is reviewed, with a focus on thermal conductivity and the strong impact of impurity scattering on the critical temperature Tc. We then compare KFe2As2 to Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, obtained by Ba substitution, where the pairing symmetry is s-wave and the Tc is ten times higher. The transition from d-wave to s-wave within the same crystal structure provides a rare opportunity to investigate the connection between band structure and pairing mechanism. We also compare KFe2As2 to the nodal iron-based superconductor LaFePO, for which the pairing symmetry is probably not d-wave, but more likely s-wave with accidental line nodes.

Strong pairing at iron $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals in hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Among numerous hypotheses, recently proposed to explain superconductivity in iron-based superconductors [1-9], many consider Fermi surface (FS) nesting [2, 4, 8, 10] and dimensionality [4, 9] as important contributors. Precise determination of the electronic spectrum and its modification by superconductivity, crucial for further theoretical advance, were hindered by a rich structure of the FS [11-17]. Here, using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with resolution of all three components of electron momentum and electronic states symmetry, we disentangle the electronic structure of hole-doped BaFe2As2, and show that nesting and dimensionality of FS sheets have no immediate relation to the superconducting pairing. Alternatively a clear correlation between the orbital character of the electronic states and their propensity to superconductivity is observed: the magnitude of the superconducting gap maximizes at 10.5 meV exclusively for iron 3dxz;yz orbitals, while for others drops to 3.5 meV. Presented results reveal similarities of electronic response to superconducting and magneto-structural transitions [18, 19], implying that relation between these two phases is more intimate than just competition for FS, and demonstrate importance of orbital physics in iron superconductors.

Intrinsic Percolative Superconductivity in KxFe2-ySe2 Single Crystals

Magnetic field penetration and magnetization hysteresis loops (MHLs) have been measured in KxFe2-ySe2 single crystals. The magnetic field penetration shows a two-step feature with a very small full-magnetic-penetration field (Hp1= 300 Oe at 2 K), and accordingly the MHL exhibits an abnormal vanishing of the central peak near zero field below 13 K. The width of the MHL in KxFe2-ySe2 at the same temperature is in general much smaller than that measured in the relatives Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2, and the MHLs in the latter two samples show the normal central peak near zero field. All these anomalies found in KxFe2-ySe2 can be understood in the picture that the sample is percolative with weakly coupled superconducting islands.

Significant enhancement of upper critical fields by doping and strain in Fe-based superconductors

We report measurements of Hc2(T) up to 85 Tesla on Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 single crystals and FeSe1-xTex films tuned by doping and strain. We observed an Hc2 enhancement by nearly 25 T at 30 K for the optimally-doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 as compared to the previous results and extraordinarily high slopes dHc2/dT = 250-500 T/K near Tc in FeSe1-xTex indicating an almost complete suppression of the orbital pair-breaking. Theoretical analysis of Hc2(T) in FeSe1-xTex and the optimally doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 predicts an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for H//ab and T < 3-10 K, and shows that Hc2 in multiband Fe based superconductor can be enhanced by doping and strain much more effectively than by the conventional way of increasing disorder.

Comparative studies of the scanning tunneling spectra in cuprate and iron-arsenide superconductors

We report scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of cuprate and iron-arsenic superconductors, including YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (Y-123, T_c = 93 K), Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 (La-112, T_c = 43 K), and the "122" compounds Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 (Co-122 with x = 0.06, 0.08, 0.12 for T_c = 14, 24, 20 K). For H > 0, pseudogap (Δ_{PG}) features are revealed inside the vortices, with Δ_{PG} = [(Δ_{eff})^2+(Δ_{SC})^2]^{1/2} > Δ_{SC} in Y-123 and Δ_{PG} < Δ_{SC} in La-112, suggesting that the physical origin of Δ_{PG} is a competing order coexisting with superconductivity. Additionally, Fourier transformation (FT) of the Y-123 spectra exhibits two types of spectral peaks, one type is associated with energy (ω)-dependent quasiparticle interference (QPI) wave-vectors and the other consists of ω-independent wave-vectors due to competing orders and (π,π) magnetic resonances. For the multi-band Co-122 compounds, two-gap superconductivity is found for all doping levels. Magnetic resonant modes that follow the temperature dependence of the superconducting gaps are also identified. These findings, together with the ω- and x-dependent QPI spectra, are consistent with a sign-changing s-wave pairing symmetry in the Co-122 iron arsenides. Our comparative studies suggest that the commonalities among the cuprate and the ferrous superconductors include the proximity to competing orders, antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations and magnetic resonances in the superconducting (SC) state, and the unconventional pairing symmetries with sign-changing order parameters on different parts of the Fermi surface.

Localized and itinerant dichotomy of electrons in Ba(Fe,Co)2As2

Variant approaches, either based on the Fermi surface nesting or started from the proximity to a Mott-insulator, were proposed to elucidate the physics in iron pnictides, but no consensus has been reached. A fundamental problem concerns the nature of their 3d electrons. Here we report the magnetoresistivity (ρ_xx) and the Hall resistivity (ρ_xy) of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0 and 0.05) in a magnetic field of up to 55T. The magnetic transition is extremely robust against magnetic field, giving strong evidence that the magnetic ordering is formed by local moments. The magnetic state is featured with a huge magnetoresistance and a distinguished Hall resistivity, ρ_xy(H), which shows a pronounced parabolic field dependence, while the paramagnetic state shows little magnetoresistance and follows a simple linear magnetic field dependence on the Hall resistivity. Analyses of our data, based on a two-carrier model, demonstrate that the electron carriers in the magnetic state rapidly increase upon applying a magnetic field, partially compensating the loss of electron carriers at T_M. We argue that the 3d-electrons in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 are divided into those who are close to forming localized moments controlling the magnetic transition and the others giving rise to complex transport properties through their interaction with the former.

Measurement of a Sign-Changing Two-Gap Superconducting Phase in Electron-Doped Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 Single Crystals using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$ (x = 0.06, 0.12) single crystals reveal direct evidence for predominantly two-gap superconductivity. These gaps decrease with increasing temperature and vanish above the superconducting transition $T_c$. The two-gap nature and the slightly doping- and energy-dependent quasiparticle scattering interferences near the wave-vectors $(\pm π, 0)$ and $(0, \pm π)$ are consistent with sign-changing $s$-wave superconductivity. The excess zero-bias conductance and the large gap-to-$T_c$ ratios suggest dominant unitary impurity scattering.

Contrasting Spin Dynamics Between Underdoped and Overdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2

We report the first NMR investigation of spin dynamics in the overdoped non-superconducting regime of Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2 up to x =0.26. We demonstrate that the absence of inter-band transitions with large momentum transfer Q(AF) ~ (pi, 0) between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces results in complete suppression of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations for x > 0.15. Our experimental results provide direct evidence for a correlation between Tc and the strength of Q(AF) antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations.

Thermo-acoustic wave propagation and reflection near the liquid-gas critical point

We study the thermo-acoustic wave propagation and reflection near the liquid-gas critical point. Specifically, we perform a numerical investigation of the acoustic responses in a near-critical fluid to thermal perturbations based on the same setup of a recent ultrasensitive interferometry measurement in CO2 [Y. Miura et al. Phys. Rev. E 74, 010101(R) (2006)]. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data. New features regarding the reflection pattern of thermo-acoustic waves near the critical point under pulse perturbations are revealed by the proper inclusion of the critically diverging bulk viscosity.

Field-Driven Hysteretic and Reversible Resistive Switch at the Ag-Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 Interface

The hysteretic and reversible polarity-dependent resistive switch driven by electric pulses is studied in both Ag/Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 sandwiches and single-layer Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 strips. The data demonstrate that the switch takes place at the Ag-Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 interface. A model, which describes the data well, is proposed. We further suggest that electrochemical diffusion is the cause for the switch.
