The white dwarf binary pathways survey V. The Gaia white dwarf plus AFGK binary sample and the identification of 23 close binaries

Close white dwarf binaries consisting of a white dwarf and an A, F, G or K type main sequence star, henceforth close WD+AFGK binaries, are ideal systems to understand the nature of type Ia supernovae progenitors and to test binary evolution models. In this work we identify 775 WD+AFGK candidates from TGAS (The Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution) and Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), a well-defined sample of stars with available parallaxes, and we measure radial velocities (RVs) for 275 of them with the aim of identifying close binaries. The RVs have been measured from high resolution spectra obtained at the Xinglong 2.16m Telescope and the San Pedro Mártir 2.12m Telescope and/or from available LAMOST DR6 (low-resolution) and RAVE DR5 (medium-resolution) spectra. We identify 23 WD+AFGK systems displaying more than 3$σ$ RV variation among 151 systems for which the measured values are obtained from different nights. Our WD+AFGK binary sample contains both AFGK dwarfs and giants, with a giant fraction $\sim$43%. The close binary fractions we determine for the WD+AFGK dwarf and giant samples are $\simeq$24% and $\simeq$15%, respectively. We also determine the stellar parameters (i.e. effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, mass and radius) of the AFGK companions with available high resolution spectra. The stellar parameter distributions of the AFGK companions that are members of close and wide binary candidates do not show statistically significant differences.

CHIMPS2: Survey description and $^{12}$CO emission in the Galactic Centre

The latest generation of Galactic-plane surveys is enhancing our ability to study the effects of galactic environment upon the process of star formation. We present the first data from CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). CHIMPS2 is a survey that will observe the Inner Galaxy, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Galaxy in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $(J = 3\rightarrow2)$ emission with the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The first CHIMPS2 data presented here are a first look towards the CMZ in $^{12}$CO J = 3$\rightarrow$2 and cover $-3^{\circ}\leq\,\ell\,\leq\,5^{\circ}$ and $\mid$b$\mid \leq 0.5^{\circ}$ with angular resolution of 15 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s$^{-1}$, and rms $ΔT_A ^\ast =$ 0.58 K at these resolutions. Such high-resolution observations of the CMZ will be a valuable data set for future studies, whilst complementing the existing Galactic Plane surveys, such as SEDIGISM, the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey, and ATLASGAL. In this paper, we discuss the survey plan, the current observations and data, as well as presenting position-position maps of the region. The position-velocity maps detect foreground spiral arms in both absorption and emission.

Baryon acoustic oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations: Broadband corrugated horn construction and testing

The Baryon acoustic oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations (BINGO) telescope is a 40-m~class radio telescope under construction that has been designed to measure the large-angular-scale intensity of HI emission at 980--1260 MHz and hence to constrain dark energy parameters. A large focal plane array comprising of 1.7-metre diameter, 4.3-metre length corrugated feed horns is required in order to optimally illuminate the telescope. Additionally, very clean beams with low sidelobes across a broad frequency range are required, in order to facilitate the separation of the faint HI emission from bright Galactic foreground emission. Using novel construction methods, a full-sized prototype horn has been assembled. It has an average insertion loss of around 0.15 dB across the band, with a return loss around -25 dB. The main beam is Gaussian with the first sidelobe at around $-25 dB. A septum polariser to separate the signal into the two hands of circular polarization has also been designed, built and tested.

The Potential of Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ Nano-sheets (MXenes) for Nanoscale Solid Lubrication Revealed by Friction Force Microscopy

Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ nano-sheets (MXenes) are an emerging class of two-dimensional materials with outstanding potential to be employed in energy storage, catalysis, and triboelectric applications, on length scales ranging from the nano- to macroscopic. Despite rapidly accelerating interest in this new class of materials, their nanoscale frictional properties and in particular, their potential for solid lubrication on the nanoscale, have not been explored in detail yet. In this short communication, we present the first results on the nanoscale frictional characteristics of MXenes, in the form of a friction map obtained on an isolated Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ nano-sheet deposited on a silicon dioxide substrate via friction force microscopy. Our experiments reveal that few-layer Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ nano-sheets indeed act as solid lubricants on the nanoscale, reducing friction on the silicon dioxide substrates, although not as effectively as few-layer graphene. The results reported here pave the way for further studies focusing on nanoscale solid lubrication achieved by Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ (MXene) nano-sheets.

Continuous generation of quantum light from a single ground-state atom in an optical cavity

We show an optical wave-mixing scheme that generates quantum light by means of a single three-level atom. The atom couples to an optical cavity and two laser fields that together drive a cycling current within the atom. Weak driving in combination with strong atom-cavity coupling induces transitions between the dark states of the system, accompanied by single-photon emission and suppression of atomic excitation by quantum interference. For strong driving, the system can generate coherent or Schrödinger cat-like fields with frequencies distinct from those of the applied lasers.

Revealing the low-temperature fast relaxation peak in a model metallic glass

By systematically investigating the relaxation behavior of a model metallic glass based on the extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with the dynamic mechanical spectroscopy method, a pronounced ultra-low temperature peak on the loss modulus spectrum was discovered for the first time in MD simulations. It was found that the relation peak occurs at a much lower temperature than the typical temperature for the conventional beta relation peak as reported in the literature. According to the atomic displacement analysis, we unravel that the reversible atomic motions, rather than the thermal vibrations or local structural rearrangements, mainly contribute to this relaxation peak. We further identify the atomic level mechanism of this fast relaxation process by characterizing the local geometrical anisotropy. Furthermore, by tracing the dynamic behaviors of these "reversible" atoms, we demonstrate the intrinsic hierarchy of the local relaxation modes, which are triggered by atomic vibrations and gradually developed to the reversible and irreversible atomic movements. Our findings shed light on a general picture of the relaxation processes in metallic glasses.

The Structure of Solar Coronal Mass Ejections in the Extreme-Ultraviolet Passbands

So far most studies on the structure of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are conducted through white-light coronagraphs, which demonstrate about one third of CMEs exhibit the typical three-part structure in the high corona (e.g., beyond 2 Rs), i.e., the bright front, the dark cavity and the bright core. In this paper, we address the CME structure in the low corona (e.g., below 1.3 Rs) through extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) passbands and find that the three-part CMEs in the white-light images can possess a similar three-part appearance in the EUV images, i.e., a leading edge, a low-density zone, and a filament or hot channel. The analyses identify that the leading edge and the filament or hot channel in the EUV passbands evolve into the front and the core later within several solar radii in the white-light passbands, respectively. What's more, we find that the CMEs without obvious cavity in the white-light images can also exhibit the clear three-part appearance in the EUV images, which means that the low-density zone in the EUV images (observed as the cavity in white-light images) can be compressed and/or transformed gradually by the expansion of the bright core and/or the reconnection of magnetic field surrounding the core during the CME propagation outward. Our study suggests that more CMEs can possess the clear three-part structure in their early eruption stage. The nature of the low-density zone between the leading edge and the filament or hot channel is discussed.

Triple GEM performance in magnetic field

Performance of triple GEM prototypes in strong magnetic field has been evaluated bymeans of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. Data have been reconstructedand analyzed offline with two reconstruction methods: the charge centroid and the micro-Time-Projection-Chamber exploiting the charge and the time measurement respectively. A combinationof the two reconstruction methods is capable to guarantee a spatial resolution better than 150μmin magnetic field up to a 1 T.

Real-time free-running time scale with remote clocks on fiber-based frequency network

In this paper, we propose a real-time free-running time scale based on four remote hydrogen masers. The clocks in the ensemble were scattered around Beijing, connected by urban fiber links using a novel frequency synchronization system. The remote clock ensemble prevents the time scale from potential problems caused by correlation among co-located clocks. Insofar as it is real-time, it fulfills the requirements for applications such as navigation, telecommunications and so on. The free-running time scale is updated every 1200 s, and a disturbance-resistant algorithm makes it robust to fiber link disturbances and clock malfunctions. The results of a continuous experiment over 224 days are reported. The stability of the time scale outperformed any clock in the ensemble for averaging times of more than approximately 10000 s.

Spin stripe order in a square planar trilayer nickelate

Trilayer nickelates, which exhibit a high degree of orbital polarization combined with an electron count (d8.67) corresponding to overdoped cuprates, have been identified as a promising candidate platform for achieving high-Tc superconductivity. One such material, La4Ni3O8, undergoes a semiconductor-insulator transition at ~105 K, which was recently shown to arise from the formation of charge stripes. However, an outstanding issue has been the origin of an anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility at the transition and whether it signifies formation of spin stripes akin to single layer nickelates. Here we report single crystal neutron diffraction measurements (both polarized and unpolarized) that establish that the ground state is indeed magnetic. The ordering is modeled as antiferromagnetic spin stripes that are commensurate with the charge stripes, the magnetic ordering occurring in individual trilayers that are essentially uncorrelated along the crystallographic c-axis. Comparison of the charge and spin stripe order parameters reveals that, in contrast to single-layer nickelates such as La2-xSrxNiO4 as well as related quasi-2D oxides including manganites, cobaltates, and cuprates, these orders uniquely appear simultaneously, thus demonstrating a stronger coupling between spin and charge than in these related low-dimensional correlated oxides.

Large Transverse Momentum in Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering Beyond Lowest Order

Motivated by recently observed tension between $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.

SCOPE: SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution - Survey Description and Compact Source Catalogue

We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other.

Challenges with Large Transverse Momentum in Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering

We survey the current phenomenological status of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at moderate hard scales and in the limit of very large transverse momentum. As the transverse momentum becomes comparable to or larger than the overall hard scale, the differential cross sections should be calculable with fixed order pQCD methods, while small transverse momentum (TMD factorization) approximations should eventually break down. We find large disagreement between HERMES and COMPASS data and fixed order calculations done with modern parton densities, even in regions of kinematics where such calculations should be expected to be very accurate. Possible interpretations are suggested.

Hilbert scheme of rational curves on a generic quintic threefold

Let $X_0$ be a generic quintic threefold in projective space $\mathbf P^4$ over the complex numbers. For a fixed natural number $d$, let $R_d(X_0)$ be the open sub-scheme of the Hilbert scheme, parameterizing irreducible rational curves of degree $d$ on $X_0$. In this paper, we show that (1) $R_d(X_0)$ is smooth and of expected dimension, \par (2) Combining the Calabi-Yau condition on $X_0$, we further show that it consists of immersed rational curves. (3) Parts (1) and (2) imply a statement of Clemens' conjecture: if $C_0\in R_d(X_0)$ and $c_0:\mathbf P^1\to C_0$ is the normalization, the \par\hspace{1cc} normal sheaf is isomorphic to the vector bundle $$N_{c_0/X_0}\simeq \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1)\oplus \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1).$$

Rational curves on complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds

We prove the following results. If $X_3$ is a generic complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-fold, (1) then for each natural number $d$ there exists a rational map \par\hspace{1 cc} $c\in Hom_{bir}(\mathbf P^1, X_3)$ of $deg(c(\mathbf P^1))=d$, (2) further more all such $c$ are immersions satisfying \begin{equation} N_{c(\mathbf P^1)/ X_3}\simeq \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1)\oplus \mathcal O_{\mathbf P^1}(-1).
