Fermi-LAT counterparts of IceCube neutrinos above 100 TeV

The IceCube Collaboration has published four years of data and the observed neutrino flux is significantly in excess of the expected atmospheric background. Due to the steeply falling atmospheric background spectrum, events at the highest energies are most likely extraterrestrial. In our previous approach we have studied blazars as the possible origin of the High-Energy Starting Events (HESE) neutrino events at PeV energies. In this work we extend our study to include all HESE neutrinos (which does not include IC 170922A) at or above a reconstructed energy of 100 TeV, but below 1 PeV. We study the X-ray and $γ$-ray data of all ($\sim200$) 3LAC blazars that are positionally consistent with the neutrino events above 100 TeV to determine the maximum neutrino flux from these sources. This larger sample allows us to better constrain the scaling factor between the observed and maximum number of neutrino events. We find that when we consider a realistic neutrino spectrum and other factors, the number of neutrinos is in good agreement with the detected number of IceCube HESE events. We also show that there is no direct correlation between \Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray flux and the IceCube neutrino flux and that the expected number of neutrinos is consistent with the non-detection of individual bright blazars.

Enhanced Attenuation Arising from Lattice Resonances in a Plasma Photonic Crystal

We describe the experimental verification of lattice resonances in two-dimensional photonic crystals constructed from an array of gaseous plasma columns. Enhancements are seen in the extinction of normal incidence transverse electric electromagnetic waves when the localized surface plasmon modes of the plasma columns are shifted into the vicinity of the photonic crystal Bragg resonances. Simulations and experiments are in reasonable agreement and confirm the appearance of a Fano-like profile with deep and broad extinction bands. The broadening of the spectra as surface plasmon modes come into coincidence with Bragg gaps suggest that the Bragg fields couple strongly into the radiating Mie dipoles to drive enhanced damping of the photonic crystal resonance.

The correlation of co-located hydrogen masers

The correlation of co-located hydrogen masers (H-masers) is difficult to measure because their common-mode noise induced by the environment will be cancelled out during the comparison measurement. With the development of fibre-based high-precision time and frequency transfer technique, the correlation of co-located hydrogen masers can be directly measured with the help of remote H-masers. Recently, a fiber-based frequency synchronization network was constructed in the Beijing region by connecting 5 H-masers from 4 institutions. The correlation coefficient of atomic clocks is defined and the correlation between two co-located H-masers is measured using both experimental and simulative methods. The results show that the correlation is not prominent until the averaging time is larger than $\sim10^3$s; then, the coefficient grows rapidly for averaging times ranging from $\sim10^3$s to $\sim10^5$s and decreases beyond $\sim10^5$s up to 5 days.

Equivalence of Coniveaus

On a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers, there is the coniveau from the coniveau filtration, which is called geometric coniveau. On the same variety, there is another coniveau from the maximal sub-Hodge structure, which is called Hodge coniveau. In this paper we show they are equivalent.

Optical properties of Born-Infeld-dilaton-Lifshitz holographic superconductors

In this paper, we first study the Lifshitz-dilaton holographic superconductors with nonlinear Born-Infeld (BI) gauge field and obtain the critical temperature of the system for different values of Lifshitz dynamical exponent, $z$, and nonlinear parameter $b$. We find that for fixed value of $b$, the critical temperature decreases with increasing $z$. This indicates that the increase of anisotropy between space and time prevents the phase transition. Also, for fixed value of $z$, the critical temperature decrease with increasing $b$. Then, we investigate the optical properties of ($2+1$) and ($3+1$)-dimensional BI-Lifshitz holographic superconductors in the the presence of dilaton field. We explore the refractive index of the system. For $z=1$ and $(2+1)$-dimensional holographic superconductor, we observe negative real part for permittivity $\textrm{Re}[ε]$ as frequency $ω$ decreases. Thus, in low frequency region our superconductor exhibit metamaterial property. This behaviour is independent of the nonlinear parameter and can be seen for either linear ($b=0$) and nonlinear ($b\neq 0$) electrodynamics. Interestingly, for ($3+1$)-dimensional Lifshitz-dilaton holographic superconductors, we observe metamaterial behavior neither in the presence of linear nor nonlinear electrodynamics.

Fourfolds

We have found a "non-purely-constructive" method of acquiring algebraic cycles involving multiple steps. This note tries to present the main idea in the last step by concentrating on an example of 4-folds. The method demonstrates a contrast to traditional constructions.

Leveled sub-cohomology

In this paper we define a functor-- leveled sub-cohomology. (It bears no relation with the level of elliptic curves). It is based on leveled cycles on a smooth projective variety, and will be expected to reveal a structure in the level.

Mass retention efficiencies of He accretion onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and type Ia supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play a crucial role in studying cosmology and galactic chemical evolution. They are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) when their masses reach the Chandrasekar mass limit in binaries. Previous studies have suggested that He novae may be progenitor candidates of SNe Ia. However, the mass retention efficiencies during He nova outbursts are still uncertain. In this article, we aim to study the mass retention efficiencies of He nova outbursts and to investigate whether SNe Ia can be produced through He nova outbursts. Using the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, we simulated a series of multicycle He-layer flashes, in which the initial WD masses range from 0.7 to 1.35 Msun with various accretion rates. We obtained the mass retention efficiencies of He nova outbursts for various initial WD masses, which can be used in the binary population synthesis studies. In our simulations, He nova outbursts can increase the mass of the WD to the Chandrasekar mass limit and the explosive carbon burning can be triggered in the center of the WD; this suggests that He nova outbursts can produce SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the mass retention efficiencies in the present work are lower than those of previous studies, which leads to a lower birthrates of SNe Ia through the WD + He star channel. Furthermore, we obtained the elemental abundances distribution at the moment of explosive carbon burning, which can be used as the initial input parameters in studying explosion models of SNe Ia.

Charged scalar quasi-normal modes for linearly charged dilaton-Lifshitz solutions

Most available studies of quasi-normal modes for Lifshitz black solutions are limited to the neutral scalar perturbations. In this paper, we investigate the wave dynamics of massive charged scalar perturbation in the background of $(3+1)$-dimensional charged dilaton Lifshitz black branes/holes. We disclose the dependence of the quasi-normal modes on the model parameters, such as the Lifshitz exponent $z$, the mass and charge of the scalar perturbation field and the charge of the Lifshitz configuration. In contrast with neutral perturbations, we observe the possibility to destroy the original Lifshitz background near the extreme value of charge where the temperature is low. We find out that when the Lifshitz exponent deviates more from unity, it is more difficult to break the stability of the configuration. We also study the behavior of the real part of the quasi-normal frequencies. Unlike the neutral scalar perturbation around uncharged black branes where an overdamping was observed to start at $z=2$ and independent of the value of scalar mass, our observation discloses that the overdamping starting point is no longer at $z=2$ and depends on the mass of scalar field for charged Lifshitz black branes. For charged scalar perturbations, fixing $m_s$, the asymptotic value of $ω_R$ for high $z$ is more away from zero when the charge of scalar perturbation $q_s$ increases. There does not appear the overdamping.

Evidence for conventional superconductivity in Sr0.1Bi2Se3 from high pressure studies

SrxBi2Se3 is recently reported to be a superconductor derived from topological insulator Bi2Se3. It shows a maximum resistive Tc of 3.25 K at ambient pressure. We report magnetic (upto 1 GPa) and transport properties (upro 8 Gpa) under pressure for single crystalline Sr0.1Bi2Se3 superconductor. Magnetic measurements show that Tc decreases from ~2.6 K (0 GPa) to ~1.9 K (0.81 GPa). Similar behavior is observed in transport properties as well without much change in the metallic characteristics in normal state resistivity. No reentrant superconducting phase (Physical Review B 93, 144514 (2016)) is observed at high pressure. Normal state resistivity near Tc is explained by Fermi liquid model. Above 100 K, a polaronic hopping conduction mechanism with two parallel channels for current flow is indicated. Band structure calculations indicate decreasing density of states at Fermi level with pressure. In consonance with transition temperature suppression in conventional BCS low Tc superconductors, the pressure effect in SrxBi2Se3 is well accounted by pressure induced band broadening.

Combining TMD factorization and collinear factorization

We examine some of the complications involved when combining (matching) TMD factorization with collinear factorization to allow accurate predictions over the whole range of measured transverse momentum in a process like Drell-Yan. Then we propose some improved methods for combining the two types of factorization. (This talk is based on work reported in arXiv:1605.00671.)

Thermodynamics, phase transitions and Ruppeiner geometry for Einstein-dilaton Lifshitz black holes in the presence of Maxwell and Born-Infeld electrodynamics

In this paper, we first obtain the ($n+1$)-dimensional dilaton-Lifshitz black hole (BH) solutions in the presence of Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics. We find that there are two different solutions for $z=n+1$ and $z\neq n+1$ cases ($z$ is dynamical critical exponent). We show that the thermodynamics first law is satisfied for both cases. Then, we turn to study different phase transitions (PTs) for our BHs. We start with study of Hawking-Page PT for both linearly and BI charged BHs. After that, we discuss the PTs inside the BHs. We present the improved Davies quantities and prove that the PT points shown by them coincide with Ruppeiner ones. We show that the zero temperature PTs are transitions on radiance properties of BHs by using Landau-Lifshitz theory. Next, we turn to study Ruppeiner geometry of linearly and BI charged BHs. For linearly charged case, we show that there are no PT at finite temperature for the case $z\geq 2$. For $z<2$, it is found that the number of finite temperature PT points depends on the value of BH charge and is not more than two. When we have two finite temperature PT points, there are no thermally stable BH between these two points and we have discontinues small/large BH PTs. As expected, for small BHs, we observe finite magnitude for Ruppeiner invariant which shows the finite correlation between possible BH molecules while for large BHs, the correlation is very small. Finally, we study the Ruppeiner geometry and thermal stability of BI charged Lifshtiz BHs for different values of $z$. We observe that small BHs are thermally unstable in some situations. Also, the behavior of correlation between possible BH molecules for large BHs is the same as linearly charged case. In both linearly and BI charged cases, for some choices of parameters, the BH systems behave like a Van der Waals gas near transition point.

Relating Transverse Momentum Dependent and Collinear Factorization Theorems in a Generalized Formalism

We construct an improved implementation for combining transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization and collinear factorization. TMD factorization is suitable for low transverse momentum physics, while collinear factorization is suitable for high transverse momenta and for a cross section integrated over transverse momentum. The result is a modified version of the standard $W+Y$ prescription traditionally used in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism and related approaches. We further argue that questions regarding the shape and $Q$-dependence of the cross sections at lower $Q$ are largely governed by the matching to the $Y$-term.

An imaging study of a complex solar coronal radio eruption

Solar coronal radio bursts are enhanced radio emission excited by energetic electrons accelerated during solar eruptions, studies on which are important for investigating the origin and physical mechanism of energetic particles and further diagnosing coronal parameters. Earlier studies suffered from a lack of simultaneous high-quality imaging data of the radio burst and the eruptive structure in the inner corona. Here we present a study on a complex solar radio eruption consisting of a type II and three reversely-drifting type III bursts, using simultaneous EUV and radio imaging data. It is found that the type II burst is closely associated with a propagating and evolving CME-driven EUV shock structure, originated initially at the northern shock flank and later transferred to the top part of the shock. This source transfer is co-incident with the presence of shock decay and enhancing signatures observed at the corresponding side of the EUV front. The electron energy accelerated by the shock at the flank is estimated to be $\sim$ 0.3 c by examining the imaging data of the fast-drifting herringbone structure of the type II burst. The reversely-drifting type III sources are found to be within the ejecta and correlated with a likely reconnection event therein. Implications on further observational studies and relevant space-weather forecasting techniques are discussed.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy Interactions: Theoretical Challenges, Cosmological Implications and Observational Signatures

Models where Dark Matter and Dark Energy interact with each other have been proposed to solve the coincidence problem. We review the motivations underlying the need to introduce such interaction, its influence on the background dynamics and how it modifies the evolution of linear perturbations. We test models using the most recent observational data and we find that the interaction is compatible with the current astronomical and cosmological data. Finally, we describe the forthcoming data sets from current and future facilities that are being constructed or designed that will allow a clearer understanding of the physics of the dark sector.
