Suppression of phonon-mediated hot carrier relaxation in type-II InAs/AlAs$_{x}$Sb$_{1-x}$ quantum wells: a practical route to hot carrier solar cells

InAs/AlAs$_{x}$Sb$_{1-x}$ quantum wells are investigated for their potential as hot carrier solar cells. Continuous wave power and temperature dependent photoluminescence indicate a transition in the dominant hot carrier relaxation process from conventional phonon-mediated carrier relaxation below 90 K to a regime where inhibited radiative recombination dominates the hot carrier relaxation at elevated temperatures. At temperatures below 90 K photoluminescence measurements are consistent with type-I quantum wells that exhibit hole localization associated with alloy/interface fluctuations. At elevated temperatures hole delocalization reveals the true type-II band alignment; where it is observed that inhibited radiative recombination due to the spatial separation of the charge carriers dominates hot carrier relaxation. This decoupling of phonon-mediated relaxation results in robust hot carriers at higher temperatures even at lower excitation powers. These results indicate type-II quantum wells offer potential as practical hot carrier systems.

The normal bundle of a rational curve on a generic quintic threefold

This is another proof of the same result in [9]. Let $X_0$ be a generic quintic hypersurface in $\mathbf P^4$ over $\mathbb C$ and $c_0$ a regular map $\mathbf P^1\to X_0$ that is generically one-to-one to its image. In this paper, we show (1) $c_0$ must be an immersion, i.e. the differential $(c_0)_\ast: T_{t}\mathbf P^1 \to T_{c_0(t)} X_0$ is injective at each $t\in \mathbf P^1$, (2) the normal bundle of $c_0$ satisfies $$H^1(N_{c_0/X_0})=0.$$

Microphase transitions of block copolymer/homopolymer under shear flow

Cell dynamics simulation is used to investigate the phase behavior of block copolymer/homopolymer mixture subjected to a steady shear flow. Phase transitions occur from transverse to parallel and then to perpendicular lamellar structure with an increase of shear rate and this is the result of interaction between the shear flow and the concentration fluctuation. Rheological properties, such as normal stress differences and shear viscosity, are all closely related with the direction of the lamellae. Furthermore, we specifically explore the phase behavior and the order parameter under weak and strong shear of two different initial states, and realize the importance of the thermal history. It is necessary to apply the shear field at the appropriate time if we want to get what we want. These results provide an easy method to create ordered, defect-free materials in experiment and engineering technology through imposing shear flow.

Square Kilometer Array Telescope - Precision Reference Frequency Synchronisation via 1f-2f Dissemination

The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is an international effort to build the world's largest radio telescope, with one square kilometer collecting area. Besides its ambitious scientific objectives, such as probing the cosmic dawn and cradle of life, SKA also demands several revolutionary technological breakthroughs, with ultra-high precision synchronisation of the frequency references for thousands of antennas being one of them. In this report, aimed at applications to SKA, we demonstrate a frequency reference synchronization and dissemination scheme with the phase noise compensation function placed at the client site. Hence, one central hub can be linked to a large number of client sites, forming a star-shaped topology. As a performance test, the 100 MHz reference signal from a Hydrogen maser clock is disseminated and recovered at two remote sites. Phase noise characteristics of the recovered reference frequency signal coincides with that of the hydrogen-maser source and satisfies SKA requirement.

Dissemination stability and phase noise specification of fiber-cascaded RF frequency dissemination

Over the past decade, fiber based frequency dissemination has achieved significant progresses in following aspects. To study the dissemination stability and phase noise specifications of the fiber-cascaded RF frequency dissemination system, we perform a lab-top experiment using three sets of RF modulated frequency dissemination systems. They are linked by 50 km + 50 km +45 km fiber spools. The dissemination stabilities of each segments and whole system are measured simultaneously. After that, the phase noise of each segment is also measured and the result shows that the phase noise spectrums of recovered frequency signal can be optimized via narrow band phase lock loop.

The fastest unbound star in our Galaxy ejected by a thermonuclear supernova

Hypervelocity stars (HVS) travel with velocities so high, that they exceed the escape velocity of the Galaxy. Several acceleration mechanisms have been discussed. Only one HVS (US 708, HVS 2) is a compact helium star. Here we present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of US\,708. Travelling with a velocity of $\sim1200\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, it is the fastest unbound star in our Galaxy. In reconstructing its trajectory, the Galactic center becomes very unlikely as an origin, which is hardly consistent with the most favored ejection mechanism for the other HVS. Furthermore, we discovered US\,708 to be a fast rotator. According to our binary evolution model it was spun-up by tidal interaction in a close binary and is likely to be the ejected donor remnant of a thermonuclear supernova.

A high-efficiency and low-dissipation hybrid weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme

In this paper, we propose a simple hybrid WENO scheme to increase computational efficiency and decrease numerical dissipation. Based on the characteristic-wise approach, the scheme switches the numerical flux of each characteristic variables between that of WENO scheme and its optimal linear scheme according to a discontinuity detector measuring the non-resolvability of the linear scheme. A number of numerical examples computed with 5th-order WENO scheme suggested that, while achieving very small numerical dissipation and good robustness, the computational effort on WENO flux used in the hybrid scheme is negligible.

Fiber-based Radio Frequency Dissemination for Branching Networks with Passive Phase Noise Cancellation

We demonstrate a new fiber-based radio frequency dissemination scheme for branching networks. Without any phase controls on RF signals or usages of active feedback locking components, the highly stable reference frequency signal can be delivered to several remote sites simultaneously and independently. Relative frequency stability of 6E-15/s and 7E-17/1E4s is obtained for 10km dissemination. The proposed low cost and scalable method can be applied to some large-scale frequency synchronization networks.

Constraints on single-degenerate Chandrasekhar mass progenitors of Type Iax supernovae

SNe Iax are proposed as one new sub-class of SNe Ia. SNe Iax have been estimated to account for ~5-30% of the total SN Ia rate, and most SNe Iax have been discovered in late-type galaxies. In addition, observations constrain the progenitor systems of some SN Iax progenitors have ages of <80Myr. Recently, the weak deflagration explosions of Ch-mass CO WDs seem to provide a viable physical scenario for SNe Iax. Here, comparing theoretical predictions from BPS calculations with SN Iax observations, we put constraints on the SD Ch-mass model as a possible Iax progenitor. A long delay times of >3Gyr and low SN rates of ~3e-5/yr are found in our RG donor channel, indicating that this channel is unlikely to produce SNe Iax. We predict that the Galactic rate from the MS (He) donor channel is ~1.5e-3/yr (3e-4/yr), which is consistent with the observed Iax rate. The short delay times in the He channel support the young host environments of SNe Iax. However, the relative long delay times in the MS donor channel are less favourable for the observational constraints on the Iax progenitor ages. Finally, we set an upper limit on the pre-SN mass-loss rate at < 10e-4 M_sun/yr (for V_wind=100 km/s). The delay times in the SD Ch-mass model do not account for that most SNe Iax are located in late-type galaxies. However, at least one Iax event (SN 2008ge) is hosted by a S0 galaxy with no signs of star formation. Moreover, current X-ray observations cannot rule out the SD Ch-mass model. Taking all these into account and considering the uncertainty of the observed rate for SNe Iax, we suggest that some SNe Iax may be produced from weak deflagrations of Ch-mass CO WDs in SD progenitors, especially in the He-star channel. This is consistent with recent analysis of HST observations for the SN Iax SN2012Z. However, this SD deflagration model is still unlikely to be the most common progenitor scenario for SNe Iax.

Improving Photoelectron Counting and Particle Identification in Scintillation Detectors with Bayesian Techniques

Many current and future dark matter and neutrino detectors are designed to measure scintillation light with a large array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The energy resolution and particle identification capabilities of these detectors depend in part on the ability to accurately identify individual photoelectrons in PMT waveforms despite large variability in pulse amplitudes and pulse pileup. We describe a Bayesian technique that can identify the times of individual photoelectrons in a sampled PMT waveform without deconvolution, even when pileup is present. To demonstrate the technique, we apply it to the general problem of particle identification in single-phase liquid argon dark matter detectors. Using the output of the Bayesian photoelectron counting algorithm described in this paper, we construct several test statistics for rejection of backgrounds for dark matter searches in argon. Compared to simpler methods based on either observed charge or peak finding, the photoelectron counting technique improves both energy resolution and particle identification of low energy events in calibration data from the DEAP-1 detector and simulation of the larger MiniCLEAN dark matter detector.

The BetaCage, an ultra-sensitive screener for surface contamination

Material screening for identifying low-energy electron emitters and alpha-decaying isotopes is now a prerequisite for rare-event searches (e.g., dark-matter direct detection and neutrinoless double-beta decay) for which surface radiocontamination has become an increasingly important background. The BetaCage, a gaseous neon time-projection chamber, is a proposed ultra-sensitive (and nondestructive) screener for alpha- and beta-emitting surface contaminants to which existing screening facilities are insufficiently sensitive. Sensitivity goals are 0.1 betas per keV-m$^2$-day and 0.1 alphas per m$^2$-day, with the former limited by Compton scattering of photons in the screening samples and (thanks to tracking) the latter expected to be signal-limited; radioassays and simulations indicate backgrounds from detector materials and radon daughters should be subdominant. We report on details of the background simulations and detector design that provide the discrimination, shielding, and radiopurity necessary to reach our sensitivity goals for a chamber with a 95$\times$95 cm$^2$ sample area positioned below a 40 cm drift region and monitored by crisscrossed anode and cathode planes consisting of 151 wires each.

Update on the MiniCLEAN Dark Matter Experiment

The direct search for dark matter is entering a period of increased sensitivity to the hypothetical Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP). One such technology that is being examined is a scintillation only noble liquid experiment, MiniCLEAN. MiniCLEAN utilizes over 500 kg of liquid cryogen to detect nuclear recoils from WIMP dark matter and serves as a demonstration for a future detector of order 50 to 100 tonnes. The liquid cryogen is interchangeable between argon and neon to study the A$^{2}$ dependence of the potential signal and examine backgrounds. MiniCLEAN utilizes a unique modular design with spherical geometry to maximize the light yield using cold photomultiplier tubes in a single-phase detector. Pulse shape discrimination techniques are used to separate nuclear recoil signals from electron recoil backgrounds. MiniCLEAN will be spiked with additional $^{39}$Ar to demonstrate the effective reach of the pulse shape discrimination capability. Assembly of the experiment is underway at SNOLAB and an update on the project is given.

A prototype low-background multiwire proportional chamber for measuring alphas and low-energy betas

A prototype multiwire proportional chamber (MWPC) was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a radiopure time projection chamber with MWPC track readout to assay materials for alpha- and beta-emitting surface contaminants for future rare-event-search experiments as well as other scientific fields. The design features and assembly techniques described here are motivated by the position and energy resolution required to reconstruct alpha and beta tracks while efficiently rejecting backgrounds. Results from a test setup using an $^{55}$Fe x-ray source indicate excellent operational stability and a near-ideal energy resolution of 15.8% FWHM at 5.89 keV and a gas gain of $\sim$10$^{4}$.

TeV gamma-ray survey of the Northern sky using the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern $γ$-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from $-10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to $\sim$1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential $γ$-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed. Additionally, $95\%$ confidence level upper limits of the flux from the investigated sky region are shown. Specific upper limits for 663 GeV $γ$-ray AGNs inside the ARGO-YBJ field of view are reported. The effect of the absorption of $γ$-rays due to the interaction with extragalactic background light is estimated.

Predicting the amount of hydrogen stripped by the supernova explosion for SN 2002cx-like SNe Ia

The most favored progenitor scenarios for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) involve the single-degenerate (SD) scenario and the double-degenerate scenario. The absence of stripped hydrogen (H) in the nebular spectra of SNe Ia challenges the SD progenitor models. Recently, it was shown that pure deflagration explosion models of Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs ignited off-center reproduce the characteristic observational features of 2002cx-like SNe Ia very well. In this work we predict, for the first time, the amount of stripped H for the off-center pure deflagration explosions. We find that their low kinetic energies lead to inefficient H mass stripping (less than 0.01 M_sun), indicating that the stripped H may be hidden in (observed) late-time spectra of SN 2002cx-like SNe Ia.

Bell inequality and nonlocality in a two-dimensional mixed spin systems

In this paper, we use Bell inequality and nonlocality to study the bipartite correlation in an exactly soluble two-dimensional mixed spin system. Bell inequality turns out to be a valuable detector for phase transitions in this model. It can detect not only the quantum phase transition, but also the thermal phase transitions, of the system. The property of bipartite correlation in the system is also analyzed. In the quantum anti-ferromagnetic phase, the Bell inequality is violated thus nonlocality is present. It is interesting that the nonlocality is enhanced by thermal fluctuation, and similar results have not been observed in anti-ferromagnetic phase. In the ferromagnetic phase, the quantum correlation turns out to be very novel, which cannot be captured by entanglement or nonlocality.

Fiber Based Multiple-Access Optical Frequency Dissemination

We demonstrate a fiber based multiple-access optical frequency dissemination scheme. Without using any additional laser sources, we reproduce the stable disseminated frequency at an arbitrary point of fiber link. Relative frequency stability of 3E10^{-16}/s and 4E10^{-18}/10^4s is obtained. A branching fiber network for highly-precision synchronization of optical frequency is made possible by this method and its applications are discussed.

Odd-even effect of quantum discord and quantum phase transitions in the S=1/2 spin ladder with ring exchange

The singularity of quantum correlations, such as quantum entanglement(QE) and quantum discord(QD), has been widely regarded as a valuable indicator for quantum phase transition(QPT) in low-dimensional quantum systems. In this paper, for a spin ladder system with ring exchange, we find that the singularity of QD (or QE) could not indicate the critical points of the system. Instead, the QD shows a novel odd-even effect in some phases, which can be used to detect the phase boundary points. The size effect is related to the symmetry breaking of the ladder.
