Square-root growth of operator entanglement in an integrable brickwork circuit

It is widely expected that the von Neumann entanglement of a local operator grows at most logarithmically in integrable many-body systems in infinite volume. We give a counterexample in a four-state brickwork circuit whose gate is a permutation matrix solving the constant Yang--Baxter equation. The von Neumann operator entropy grows as $(\log2)\sqrt{t/π}+O(\log t)$, whereas fixed-index Rényi entropies grow linearly below index one and logarithmically above it. At fixed relative Hilbert--Schmidt error below one, matrix product operator simulations require a bond dimension growing at least as $\exp(c\sqrt t)$ for some $c>0$.

On the growth of operator entanglement in brickwork circuits with Yang--Baxter gates

We study the operator entanglement of local operators in one-dimensional brickwork circuits whose two-site gate satisfies the braid relation; throughout this work, we call such a gate a Yang--Baxter gate. We establish upper bounds for several structured, overlapping classes of Yang--Baxter gates. We show that the operator Schmidt rank remains uniformly bounded in time for all qubit Yang--Baxter gates and, in arbitrary local dimension, for permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. We also show that it grows at most polynomially for involutive dual-unitary Yang--Baxter gates and for arbitrary phase dressings of permutation gates obtained from non-degenerate Yang--Baxter maps. These results imply, respectively, constant and logarithmic upper bounds on the operator entanglement. Conversely, we construct a seven-state involutive Yang--Baxter gate without dual unitarity and a one-site operator whose exact operator Schmidt rank grows exponentially, although the corresponding operator entropies remain undetermined. Entanglement growth in the general Yang--Baxter case remains open. All proofs and selected examples were constructed by ChatGPT 5.6 Sol.

Exact solutions of hidden free fermion models

Hidden-free-fermion (HFF) Hamiltonians exhibit free-fermion spectra despite lacking an explicit quadratic representation, yet their algebraic provenance and periodic-boundary behavior remain open questions. Here we establish that a broad class of HFF models arises from distinct Lax operator realizations of a twisted multistate Perk--Schultz \(R\) matrix. Its reflected degeneration generates a closed finite hierarchy of mutually commuting transfer matrices, whose functional relations determine the complete many-body spectrum. As a decisive example, we solve the inhomogeneous free-fermions-in-disguise (FFD) chain, which exhibits HFF, nested HFF, or interacting spectra, depending on its coupling. The homogeneous FFD chain with both one-wrap and periodic boundary conditions exhibits an emergent cubic finite-size gap while retaining the exact \(z=3/2\) bulk behavior. The construction extends to higher-state and face-type realizations, providing a common algebraic framework for coupling-dependent spectral organization and multiscale behavior in interacting quantum systems.

Anomalous current fluctuations in the stochastic XNOR hopping model

We consider fluctuations of the spin current in the stochastic XNOR process, a kinetically constrained hopping model in one spatial dimension. We formulate three conjectures with explicit amplitudes for the long-time current distributions: a Gaussian limit on the $t^{1/4}$ scale for homogeneous initial states with nonzero magnetization, a half-normal limit on the $t^{1/4}$ scale for domain-wall states with opposite magnetizations, and an M-Wright limit on the $t^{1/8}$ scale for homogeneous initial states at zero magnetization. Earlier work identified the tracer mechanism and anticipated the scaling exponents and limiting shapes in the domain-wall and zero-magnetization settings. Starting from the microscopic XNOR dynamics, we predict the missing amplitudes for the continuous-time process and extend the picture to homogeneous biased initial data. Simulations provide numerical support for all three conjectures without fitted parameters. A separate mathematical companion paper presents an extensively AI-generated candidate proof. Generative-AI tools were used in the research and writing workflow.

Solving models with generalized free fermions II: Path-product expansion and conserved charges

Free-fermion solvability in quantum spin systems is increasingly understood to be governed by a graph Clifford algebra defined from the frustration graph of the Hamiltonian. When the frustration graph belongs to certain classes, such as the even-hole-free and claw-free (ECF) class, the Hamiltonian is solvable by hidden free fermions: it admits a free-fermion solution although it does not reduce to a Majorana bilinear under the Jordan-Wigner transformation. However, unlike in the Jordan-Wigner case, where each mode is a linear combination of single Majorana fermions, the explicit operator structure of the hidden free-fermion modes---and that of the local conserved charges---has remained obscure. In this work, we derive a path-product expansion that expresses each free-fermion mode as a linear combination of products along induced paths in the extended frustration graph. The expansion follows from the Krylov generating function and yields the modes directly, without using the transfer matrix or nonlocal conserved charges; the resulting mode decomposition also computes infinite-temperature dynamical correlation functions. We further obtain explicit expressions for local conserved charges as linear combinations of path products along induced paths; these charges apply beyond the free-fermion (ECF) class to more general claw-free frustration graphs. We also identify a family of generalized conserved charges containing both the known nonlocal conserved charges and these local charges. For the homogeneous periodic Fendley model, the local conserved charges exhibit the same Catalan-tree pattern as those of the spin-$1/2$ XXX chain.

On the two-copy distillability of Werner states and a new partial trace inequality

Problem 5 in {\it Five Open Problems in Quantum Information Theory} [PRX Quantum 3, 010101 (2022)], asks whether the two-ququart Werner state $\varrho(4,-\tfrac12)$ is two-copy distillable, where $\varrho(d,α)=(I+αF)/(d^2+αd)$. We answer it in the negative. To this end, we show the following stronger statement: for all $C\in M_{d_1d_2}(\mathbb{C})$ of rank at most $r \le d_1 d_2$, $\mathrm{tr}_1(C)\|_F^2+\|\mathrm{tr}_2(C)\|_F^2 \le r\|C\|_F^2+\frac{1}{r}|\mathrm{tr}(C)|^2$. A result by Costa Rico on the equivalence of this inequality with two-copy undistillability at $r = 2$ then settles Problem 5: $\varrho(4,-\tfrac{1}{2})$ is not two-copy distillable. Furthermore, we show that $\varrho(d,α)$ is two-copy undistillable for every $d\ge2$, if and only if $α\ge-\tfrac{1}{2}$. Thus, the one and two-copy distillability regions of $\varrho(d,α)$ coincide. These results have been found and written up with AI tools, pointing towards a structural change affecting the field of quantum information and computation.

A free fermions in disguise model with claws

Recently, several spin chain models have been discovered that admit solutions in terms of "free fermions in disguise." A graph-theoretical treatment of such models was also established, giving sufficient conditions for free fermionic solvability. These conditions involve a particular property of the so-called frustration graph of the Hamiltonian, namely that it must be claw-free. Additionally, one set of sufficient conditions also requires the absence of so-called even holes. In this paper, we present a model with disguised free fermions where the frustration graph contains both claws and even holes. Special relations between coupling constants ensure that the free fermionic property still holds. Notably, the central elements associated with the even holes can be removed by fixing the gauge, revealing our model to be an integrable deformation within the original algebra of free fermions in disguise. The transfer matrix of this model can be factorized in a special case, thereby proving the conjectured free fermionic nature of a special quantum circuit published recently by two of the present authors.

Free fermions in disguise without exponential degeneracies

Recently, a number of spin chain models have been discovered that are solvable via hidden free-fermionic structures, going beyond the Jordan-Wigner paradigm. However, all examples in the literature displayed degeneracies that grow exponentially with the volume and that are homogeneous in the spectrum (identical degeneracies for all energy levels). In this note we present a model that can be solved by ``free fermions in disguise'' (FFD), such that the spectrum is free from exponential degeneracies for generic coupling constants. The model can be seen as a particular perturbation of two Ising chains. Alternatively, it can be realized as an interpolation between a standard Jordan-Wigner solvable chain and the original FFD model of Fendley. We used ChatGPT Pro 5.4 and 5.5 as a research assistant; in the Supplemental Material we provide details about the collaboration between the AI and the human author.

Graph restricted tensors: building blocks for holographic networks

We analyze few-body quantum states with particular correlation properties imposed by the requirement of maximal bipartite entanglement for selected partitions of the system into two complementary parts. A novel framework to treat this problem by encoding these constraints in a graph is advocated; the resulting objects are called ``graph-restricted tensors''. This framework encompasses several examples previously treated in the literature, such as 1-uniform multipartite states, quantum states related to dual unitary operators and absolutely maximally entangled states (AME) corresponding to 2-unitary matrices. Original examples of presented graph-restricted tensors are motivated by tensor network models for the holographic principle. In concrete cases we find exact analytic solutions, demonstrating thereby that there exists a vast landscape of non-stabilizer tensors useful for the lattice models of holography.

Bethe Ansatz with a Large Language Model

We explore the capability of a Large Language Model (LLM) to perform specific computations in mathematical physics: the task is to compute the coordinate Bethe Ansatz solution of selected integrable spin chain models. We select three integrable Hamiltonians for which the solutions were unpublished; two of the Hamiltonians are actually new. We observed that the LLM semi-autonomously solved the task in all cases, with a few mistakes along the way. These were corrected after the human researchers spotted them. The results of the LLM were checked against exact diagonalization (performed by separate programs), and the derivations were also checked by the authors. The Bethe Ansatz solutions are interesting in themselves. Our second model manifestly breaks left-right invariance, but it is PT-symmetric, therefore its solution could be interesting for applications in Generalized Hydrodynamics. And our third model is solved by a special form of the nested Bethe Ansatz, where the model is interacting, but the nesting level has a free fermionic structure lacking $U(1)$-invariance. This structure appears to be unique and it was found by the LLM. We used ChatGPT 5.2 Pro and 5.4 Pro by OpenAI.

Solving models with generalized free fermions I: Algebras and eigenstates

We study quantum spin chains solvable via hidden free fermionic structures. We study the algebras behind such models, establishing connections to the mathematical literature of the so-called ``graph-Clifford'' or ``quasi-Clifford'' algebras. We also introduce the ``defining representation'' for such algebras, and show that this representation actually coincides with the terms of the Hamiltonian in two relevant models: the XY model and the ``free fermions in disguise'' model of Fendley. Afterwards we study a particular anti-symmetric combination of commuting Hamiltonians; this is performed in a model independent way. We show that for this combination there exists a reference state, and few body eigenstates can be created by the fermionic operators. Concrete application is presented in the case of the ``free fermions in disguise'' model.

Efficient Eigenstate Preparation in an Integrable Model with Hilbert Space Fragmentation

We consider the preparation of all the eigenstates of spin chains using quantum circuits. It is known that generic eigenstates of free-fermionic spin chains can be prepared with circuits whose depth grows only polynomially with the length of the chain and the number of particles. We show that the polynomial growth is also achievable for selected interacting models where the interaction between the particles is sufficiently simple. Our working example is the folded XXZ model, an integrable spin chain that exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation. We present the explicit quantum circuits that prepare arbitrary eigenstates of this model on an open chain efficiently. We perform error-mitigated noisy simulations with circuits of up to 13 qubits and different connectivities between qubits, achieving a relative error below 5%. As a byproduct, we extend a recent reformulation of the Bethe ansatz as a quantum circuit from closed to open boundary conditions.

Bethe Ansatz, Quantum Circuits, and the F-basis

The Bethe Ansatz is a method for constructing exact eigenstates of quantum-integrable spin chains. Recently, deterministic quantum algorithms, referred to as "algebraic Bethe circuits", have been developed to prepare Bethe states for the spin-1/2 XXZ model. These circuits represent a unitary formulation of the standard algebraic Bethe Ansatz, expressed using matrix-product states that act on both the spin chain and an auxiliary space. In this work, we systematize these previous results, and show that algebraic Bethe circuits can be derived by a change of basis in the auxiliary space. The new basis, identical to the "F-basis" known from the theory of quantum-integrable models, generates the linear superposition of plane waves that is characteristic of the coordinate Bethe Ansatz. We explain this connection, highlighting that certain properties of the F-basis (namely, the exchange symmetry of the spins) are crucial for the construction of algebraic Bethe circuits. We demonstrate our approach by presenting new quantum circuits for the inhomogeneous spin-1/2 XXZ model.

Quantum circuits with free fermions in disguise

Recently multiple families of spin chain models were found, which have a free fermionic spectrum, even though they are not solvable by a Jordan-Wigner transformation. Instead, the free fermions emerge as a result of a rather intricate construction. In this work we consider the quantum circuit formulation of the problem. We construct circuits using local unitary gates built from the terms in the local Hamiltonians of the respective models, and ask the question: which circuit geometries (sequence of gates) lead to a free fermionic spectrum? Our main example is the 4-fermion model of Fendley, where we construct free fermionic circuits with various geometries. In certain cases we prove the free fermionic nature, while for other geometries we confirm it numerically. Surprisingly, we find that many standard brickwork circuits are not free fermionic, but we identify certain symmetric constructions which are. We also consider a recent generalization of the 4-fermion model and obtain the factorization of its transfer matrix, and subsequently derive a free-fermionic circuit for this case as well.

Exact real time dynamics with free fermions in disguise

We consider quantum spin chains with a hidden free fermionic structure, distinct from the Jordan-Wigner transformation and its generalizations. We express selected local operators with the hidden fermions. This way we can exactly solve the real time dynamics in various physical scenarios, including the computation of selected dynamical two point functions, in continuous or discrete time. In the latter case we build a quantum circuit that can be implemented on a quantum computer. With this we extend the family of classically simulable quantum many-body processes.

Integrable models on Rydberg atom chains

We initiate a systematic study of integrable models for spin chains with constrained Hilbert spaces; we focus on spin-1/2 chains with the Rydberg constraint. We extend earlier results for medium-range spin chains to the constrained Hilbert space, and formulate an integrability condition. This enables us to construct new integrable models with fixed interaction ranges. We classify all time- and space-reflection symmetric integrable Rydberg-constrained Hamiltonians of range 3 and 4. At range 3, we find a single family of integrable Hamiltonians: the so-called RSOS quantum chains, which are related to the well-known RSOS models of Andrews, Baxter, and Forrester. At range 4 we find two families of models, the first of which is the constrained XXZ model. We also find a new family of models depending on a single coupling $z$. We provide evidence of two critical points related to the golden ratio $ϕ$, at $z=ϕ^{-1/2}$ and $z=ϕ^{3/2}$. We also perform a partial classification of integrable Hamiltonians for range 5.

Crosscap states with tunable entanglement as exact eigenstates of local spin chain Hamiltonians

It has been observed recently that various spin chain Hamiltonians admit special zero energy "crosscap" eigenstates. These states are made up of maximally entangled Bell pairs prepared on antipodal sites of a periodic chain. We generalize the states by allowing the antipodal pairs to have non-maximal, tunable entanglement. We give sufficient conditions for such states to be exact zero energy eigenstates of a local Hamiltonian. The conditions are naturally satisfied in many models which have a global U(1) symmetry. These models include well known integrable models such as the XX model, the Bariev model, the folded XXZ model, and also a variety of non-integrable models. Using the zero-energy crosscap states we also derive a family of exact zero modes with sub-volume law entanglement.

Integrability and charge transport in asymmetric quantum-circuit geometries

We revisit the integrability of quantum circuits constructed from two-qubit unitary gates $U$ that satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation. A brickwork arrangement of $U$ typically corresponds to an integrable Trotterization of some Hamiltonian dynamics. Here, we consider more general circuit geometries which include circuits without any nontrivial space periodicity. We show that any time-periodic quantum circuit in which $U$ is applied to each pair of neighbouring qubits exactly once per period remains integrable. We further generalize this framework to circuits with time-varying two-qubit gates. The spatial arrangement of gates in the integrable circuits considered herein can break the space-reflection symmetry even when $U$ itself is symmetric. By analyzing the dynamical spin susceptibility on ballistic hydrodynamic scale, we investigate how an asymmetric arrangement of gates affects the spin transport. While it induces nonzero higher odd moments in the dynamical spin susceptibility, the first moment, which corresponds to a drift in the spreading of correlations, remains zero. We explain this within a quasiparticle picture which suggests that a nonzero drift necessitates gates acting on distinct degrees of freedom.
