Weak ergodicity breaking with isolated integrable sectors

We consider spin chain models with local Hamiltonians that display weak ergodicity breaking. In these models, the majority of the eigenstates are thermal, but there is a distinguished subspace of the Hilbert space in which ergodicity is broken. We achieve such a weak breaking by embedding selected integrable models into larger Hilbert spaces of otherwise chaotic models. The integrable subspaces do not have a tensor product structure with respect to any spatial bipartition, therefore our constructions differ from certain trivial embeddings. We consider multiple mechanisms for such an embedding, and we also review previous examples in the literature. Curiously, all our examples can be seen as perturbations of models with Hilbert space fragmentation, such that the perturbed models are not fragmented anymore.

Volume Changing Symmetries by Matrix Product Operators

We consider spin chain models with exotic symmetries that change the length of the spin chain. It is known that the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain at the supersymmetric point $Δ=-1/2$ possesses such a symmetry: it is given by the supersymmetry generators, which change the length of the chain by one unit. We show that volume changing symmetries exist also in other spin chain models, and that they can be constructed using a special tensor network, which is a simple generalization of a Matrix Product Operator. As examples we consider the folded XXZ model and its perturbations, and also a new hopping model that is defined on constrained Hilbert spaces. We show that the volume changing symmetries are not related to integrability: the symmetries can survive even non-integrable perturbations. We also show that the known supersymmetry generator of the XXZ chain with $Δ=-1/2$ can also be expressed as a generalized Matrix Product Operator.

Tensor network decompositions for absolutely maximally entangled states

Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states of $k$ qudits (also known as perfect tensors) are quantum states that have maximal entanglement for all possible bipartitions of the sites/parties. We consider the problem of whether such states can be decomposed into a tensor network with a small number of tensors, such that all physical and all auxiliary spaces have the same dimension $D$. We find that certain AME states with $k=6$ can be decomposed into a network with only three 4-leg tensors; we provide concrete solutions for local dimension $D=5$ and higher. Our result implies that certain AME states with six parties can be created with only three two-site unitaries from a product state of three Bell pairs, or equivalently, with six two-site unitaries acting on a product state on six qudits. We also consider the problem for $k=8$, where we find similar tensor network decompositions with six 4-leg tensors.

Integrable deformations of superintegrable quantum circuits

Superintegrable models are very special dynamical systems: they possess more conservation laws than what is necessary for complete integrability. This severely constrains their dynamical processes, and it often leads to their exact solvability, even in non-equilibrium situations. In this paper we consider special Hamiltonian deformations of superintegrable quantum circuits. The deformations break superintegrability, but they preserve integrability. We focus on a selection of concrete models and show that for each model there is an (at least) one parameter family of integrable deformations. Our most interesting example is the so-called Rule54 model. We show that the model is compatible with a one parameter family of Yang-Baxter integrable spin chains with six-site interaction. Therefore, the Rule54 model does not have a unique integrability structure, instead it lies at the intersection of a family of quantum integrable models.

Adiabatic gauge potential and integrability breaking with free fermions

We revisit the problem of integrability breaking in free fermionic quantum spin chains. We investigate the so-called adiabatic gauge potential (AGP), which was recently proposed as an accurate probe of quantum chaos. We also study the so-called weak integrability breaking, which occurs if the dynamical effects of the perturbation do not appear at leading order in the perturbing parameter. A recent statement in the literature claimed that integrability breaking should generally lead to an exponential growth of the AGP norm with respect to the volume. However, afterwards it was found that weak integrability breaking is a counter-example, leading to a cross-over between polynomial and exponential growth. Here we show that in free fermionic systems the AGP norm always grows polynomially, if the perturbation is local with respect to the fermions, even if the perturbation strongly breaks integrability. As a by-product of our computations we also find, that in free fermionic spin chains there are operators which weakly break integrability, but which are not associated with known long range deformations.

On correlation functions in models related to the Temperley-Lieb algebra

We deal with quantum spin chains whose Hamiltonian arises from a representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, and we consider the mean values of those local operators which are generated by the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We present two key conjectures which relate these mean values to existing literature about factorized correlation functions in the XXZ spin chain. The first conjecture states that the finite volume mean values of the current and generalized current operators are given by the same simple formulas as in the case of the XXZ chain. The second conjecture states that the mean values of products of Temperley-Lieb generators can be factorized: they can expressed as sums of products of current mean values, such that the coefficients in the factorization depend neither on the eigenstate in question, nor on the selected representation of the algebra. The coefficients can be extracted from existing work on factorized correlation functions in the XXZ model. The conjectures should hold for all eigenstates that are non-degenerate with respect to the local charges of the models. We consider concrete representations, where we check the conjectures: the so-called golden chain, the $Q$-state Potts model, and the trace representation. We also explain how to derive the generalized current operators from concrete expressions for the local charges.

Finite temperature spin diffusion in the Hubbard model in the strong coupling limit

We investigate finite temperature spin transport in one spatial dimension by considering the spin-spin correlation function of the Hubbard model in the limiting case of infinitely strong repulsion. We find that in the absence of bias the transport is diffusive, and derive the spin diffusion constant. Our approach is based on asymptotic analysis of a Fredholm determinant representation. The obtained results are in agreement with Generalized Hydrodynamics approach.

Hidden quasi-local charges and Gibbs ensemble in a Lindblad system

We consider spin-1/2 chains with external driving that breaks the continuous symmetries of the Hamiltonian. We introduce a family of models described by the Lindblad equation with local jump operators. The models have hidden strong symmetries in the form of quasi-local charges, leading to multiple non-equilibrium steady states. We compute them exactly in the form of Matrix Product Operators, and argue that they are the analogues of quantum many body scars in the Lindbladian setting. We observe that the dynamics leads to the emergence of a Gibbs ensemble constructed from the hidden charges.

Matrix product symmetries and breakdown of thermalization from hard rod deformations

We construct families of exotic spin-1/2 chains using a procedure called ``hard rod deformation''. We treat both integrable and non-integrable examples. The models possess a large non-commutative symmetry algebra, which is generated by matrix product operators with fixed small bond dimension. The symmetries lead to Hilbert space fragmentation and to the breakdown of thermalization. As an effect, the models support persistent oscillations in non-equilibrium situations. Similar symmetries have been reported earlier in integrable models, but here we show that they also occur in non-integrable cases.

Current mean values in the XYZ model

The XYZ model is an integrable spin chain which has an infinite set of conserved charges, but it lacks a global $U(1)$-symmetry. We consider the current operators, which describe the flow of the conserved quantities in this model. We derive an exact result for the current mean values, valid for any eigenstate in a finite volume with periodic boundary conditions. This result can serve as a basis for studying the transport properties of this model within Generalized Hydrodynamics.

A range three elliptic deformation of the Hubbard model

In this paper we present a new integrable deformation of the Hubbard model. Our deformation gives rise to a range 3 interaction term in the Hamiltonian which does not preserve spin or particle number. This is the first non-trivial medium range deformation of the Hubbard model that is integrable. Our model can be mapped to a new integrable nearest-neighbour model via a duality transformation. The resulting nearest-neighbour model also breaks spin conservation. We compute the $R$-matrices for our models, and find that there is a very unusual dependence on the spectral parameters in terms of the elliptic amplitude.

Multi-directional unitarity and maximal entanglement in spatially symmetric quantum states

We consider dual unitary operators and their multi-leg generalizations that have appeared at various places in the literature. These objects can be related to multi-party quantum states with special entanglement patterns: the sites are arranged in a spatially symmetric pattern and the states have maximal entanglement for all bipartitions that follow from the reflection symmetries of the given geometry. We consider those cases where the state itself is invariant with respect to the geometrical symmetry group. The simplest examples are those dual unitary operators which are also self dual and reflection invariant, but we also consider the generalizations in the hexagonal, cubic, and octahedral geometries. We provide a number of constructions and concrete examples for these objects for various local dimensions. All of our examples can be used to build quantum cellular automata in 1+1 or 2+1 dimensions, with multiple equivalent choices for the ``direction of time''.

Spin Chain Overlaps and the Twisted Yangian

Using considerations based on the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz as well representation theory of twisted Yangians we derive an exact expression for the overlaps between the Bethe eigenstates of the $SO(6)$ spin chain and matrix product states built from matrices whose commutators generate an irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{so}(5)$. The latter play the role of boundary states in a domain wall version of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory which has non-vanishing, $SO(5)$ symmetric vacuum expectation values on one side of a co-dimension one wall. This theory, which constitutes a defect CFT, is known to be dual to a D3-D7 probe brane system. We likewise show that the same methodology makes it possible to prove an overlap formula, earlier presented without proof, which is of relevance for the similar D3-D5 probe brane system.

Construction and the ergodicity properties of dual unitary quantum circuits

We consider one dimensional quantum circuits of the brickwork type, where the fundamental quantum gate is dual unitary. Such models are solvable: the dynamical correlation functions of the infinite temperature ensemble can be computed exactly. We review various existing constructions for dual unitary gates and we supplement them with new ideas in a number of cases. We discuss connections with various topics in physics and mathematics, including quantum information theory, tensor networks for the AdS/CFT correspondence (holographic error correcting codes), classical combinatorial designs (orthogonal Latin squares), planar algebras, and Yang-Baxter maps. Afterwards we consider the ergodicity properties of a special class of dual unitary models, where the local gate is a permutation matrix. We find an unexpected phenomenon: non-ergodic behaviour can manifest itself in multi-site correlations, even in those cases when the one-site correlation functions are fully chaotic (completely thermalizing). We also discuss the circuits built out of perfect tensors. They appear locally as the most chaotic and most scrambling circuits, nevertheless they can show global signs of non-ergodicity: if the perfect tensor is constructed from a linear map over finite fields, then the resulting circuit can show exact quantum revivals at unexpectedly short times. A brief mathematical treatment of the recurrence time in such models is presented in the Appendix by Roland Bacher and Denis Serre.

Sub-lattice entanglement in an exactly solvable anyon-like spin ladder

We introduce an integrable spin ladder model and study its exact solution, correlation functions, and entanglement properties. The model supports two particle types (corresponding to the even and odd sub-lattices), such that the scattering phases are constants: particles of the same type scatter as free fermions, whereas the inter-particle phase shift is a constant tuned by an interaction parameter. Therefore, the spin ladder bears similarities with anyonic models. We present exact results for the spectrum and correlation functions, and we study the sub-lattice entanglement by numerical means.

Superintegrable cellular automata and dual unitary gates from Yang-Baxter maps

We consider one dimensional block cellular automata, where the local update rules are given by Yang-Baxter maps, which are set theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations. We show that such systems are superintegrable: they possess an exponentially large set of conserved local charges, such that the charge densities propagate ballistically on the chain. For these quantities we observe a complete absence of "operator spreading". In addition, the models can also have other local charges which are conserved only additively. We discuss concrete models up to local dimensions $N\le 4$, and show that they give rise to rich physical behaviour, including non-trivial scattering of particles and the coexistence of ballistic and diffusive transport. We find that the local update rules are classical versions of the "dual unitary gates" if the Yang-Baxter maps are non-degenerate. We discuss consequences of dual unitarity, and we also discuss a family of dual unitary gates obtained by a non-integrable quantum mechanical deformation of the Yang-Baxter maps.

Integrable hard rod deformation of the Heisenberg spin chains

We present new integrable models of interacting spin-1/2 chains, which can be interpreted as hard rod deformations of the XXZ Heisenberg chains. The models support multiple particle types: dynamical hard rods of length $\ell$ and particles with lengths $\ell'<\ell$ that are immobile except for the interaction with the hard rods. We encounter a remarkable phenomenon in these interacting models: exact spectral degeneracies across different deformations and volumes. The algebraic integrability of these systems is also treated using a recently developed formalism for medium range integrable spin chains. We present the detailed Bethe Ansatz solution for the case $\ell=2$.

Integrable spin chains and cellular automata with medium range interaction

We study integrable spin chains and quantum and classical cellular automata with interaction range $\ell\ge 3$. This is a family of integrable models for which there was no general theory so far. We develop an algebraic framework for such models, generalizing known methods from nearest neighbor interacting chains. This leads to a new integrability condition for medium range Hamiltonians, which can be used to classify such models. A partial classification is performed in specific cases, including $U(1)$-symmetric three site interacting models, and Hamiltonians that are relevant for interaction-round-a-face models. We find a number of models which appear to be new. As an application we consider quantum brickwork circuits of various types, including those that can accommodate the classical elementary cellular automata on light cone lattices. In this family we find that the so-called Rule150 and Rule105 models are Yang-Baxter integrable with three site interactions. We present integrable quantum deformations of these models, and derive a set of local conserved charges for them. For the famous Rule54 model we find that it does not belong to the family of integrable three site models, but we can not exclude Yang-Baxter integrability with longer interaction ranges.
