Origin of negative differential thermal resistance in a chain of two weakly coupled nonlinear lattices

Negative differential resistance in electronic conduction has been extensively studied, but it is not the case for its thermal counterpart, namely, negative differential thermal resistance (NDTR). We present a classical Landauer formula in which the nonlinearity is incorporated by the self-consistent phonon theory in order to study the heat flux across a chain consisting of two weakly coupled lattices. Two typical nonlinear models of hard and soft on-site potentials are discussed, respectively. It is shown that the nonlinearity has strong impacts on the occurring of NDTR. As a result, a transition from the absence to the presence of NDTR is observed. The origin of NDTR consists in the competition between the temperature difference, which acts as an external field, and the temperature-dependent thermal boundary conductance. Finally, the onset of the transition is clearly illustrated for this model. Our analytical calculation agrees reasonably well with numerical simulations.

Thermal conductivity of anharmonic lattices: Effective phonons and quantum corrections

We compare two effective phonon theories, which have both been applied recently to study heat conduction in anharmonic lattices. In particular, we study the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model via the Debye formula, showing the equivalence of both approaches. The temperature for the minimum of the thermal conductivity and the corresponding scaling behavior are analytically calculated, which agree well with the result obtained from nonequilibrium simulations. We also give quantum corrections for the thermal conductivity from quantum self-consistent phonon theory. The vanishing behavior at the low temperature regime and the existence of an umklapp peak are qualitatively consistent with experimental studies.

Effects of disorder on quantum fluctuations and superfluid density of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a 2D optical lattice in the presence of weak disorder within the framework of the Bogoliubov theory. In particular, we analyze the combined effects of disorder and an optical lattice on quantum fluctuations and superfluid density of the BEC system. Accordingly, the analytical expressions of the ground state energy and quantum depletion of the system are obtained. Our results show that the lattice still induces a characteristic 3D to 1D crossover in the behavior of quantum fluctuations, despite the presence of weak disorder. Furthermore, we use the linear response theory to calculate the normal fluid density of the condensate induced by disorder. Our results in the 3D regime show that the combined presence of disorder and lattice induce a normal fluid density that asymptotically approaches 4/3 of the corresponding condensate depletion. Conditions for possible experimental realization of our scenario are also proposed.

Power-dependent soliton steering in thermal nonlinear media

We address the existence and properties of optical solitons excited in thermal nonlinear media with a transverse refractive index gradient. We show that in such a geometry one can generate controllable switching from surface soliton propagating near the sample edges to bulk solitons. Beam steering associated to the different soliton output locations can be achieved by varying the input light intensity.

Ballistic Thermal Transistor of Dielectric Four-terminal Nanostructures

We report a theoretical model for a thermal transistor in dielectric four-terminal nanostructures based on mesoscopic ballistic phonon transport, in which a steady thermal flow condition of system is obtained to set up the temperature field effect of gate. In the environment, thermal flow shows the transisting behaviors at low temperatures: saturation, asymmetry, and rectification. The phenomena can be explained reasonably by the nonlinear variation of the temperature dependence of propagating phonon modes in terminals. The results suggest the possibility of the novel nano-thermal transistor fabrication.

Light bullets in Bessel optical lattices with spatially modulated nonlinearity

We address the stability of light bullets supported by Bessel optical lattices with out-of-phase modulation of the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We show that spatial modulation of the nonlinearity significantly modifies the shapes and stability domains of the light bullets. The addressed bullets can be stable, provided that the peak intensity does not exceed a critical value. We show that the width of the stability domain in terms of the propagation constant may be controlled by varying the nonlinearity modulation depth. In particular, we show that the maximum energy of the stable bullets grows with increasing nonlinearity modulation depth.

Negative differential thermal resistance induced by ballistic transport

Using nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics simulations, we study the temperature dependence of the negative differential thermal resistance that appears in two-segment Frenkel-Kontorova lattices. We apply the theoretical method based on Landauer equation to obtain the relationship between the heat current and the temperature, which states a fundamental interpretation about the underlying physical mechanism of the negative differential thermal resistance. The temperature profiles and transport coefficients are demonstrated to explain the crossover from diffusive to ballistic transport. The finite-size effect is also discussed.

Elliptic Vortices in Composite Mathieu Lattices

We address the elliptically shaped vortex solitons in defocusing nonlinear media imprinted with a composite Mathieu lattice. Elliptic vortices feature anisotropic patterns both in intensity and phase, and can only exist when their energy flow exceed some certain threshold. Single-charged elliptic vortices are found to arise via bifurcation from dipole modes, which, to the best of our knowledge is the first example in the context of optics studies of symmetry breaking bifurcations for the phase dislocations of different dimensionalities. Higher-order elliptic vortices with topological charge could exhibit spatially separated single-charged phase singularities, leading to their stabilization. The salient features of reported elliptic vortices qualitatively hold for other elliptic shaped confining potentials.

High-order Harmonic Generation in a Time-integrated Quantum Transition Picture

We develop a numerical scheme to investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in intense laser-matter interactions. Tracing the time evolution of every electronic laser-field-free state, we "observe" the HHG in a time-integrated quantum transition picture. Our full-quantum simulations reveal that continuum electrons with a broad energy distribution contribute equally to one harmonic and the excited state also plays an important role in the molecular HHG. These results imply a laser-intensity-dependent picture of intramolecular interference in the HHG.

Reading molecular messages from the intersections of high-order harmonic spectra at different orientations

We investigate the orientation dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from H$_2^+$ with different internuclear distances irradiated by intense laser fields both numerically and analytically. The calculated molecular HHG spectra are found to be sensitive to molecular axis orientation relative to incident laser field polarization and internuclear separation. In particular, the spectra calculated for different orientation angles demonstrate a kind of intersection, which is identified as arising due to intramolecular two-center interference in the HHG. The striking "intersection" phenomenon can be used to probe the molecular instantaneous structure.

Computation of the temperature dependence of the heat capacity of complex molecular systems using random color noise

We propose a new method for computing the temperature dependence of the heat capacity in complex molecular systems. The proposed scheme is based on the use of the Langevin equation with low frequency color noise. We obtain the temperature dependence of the correlation time of random noises, which enables to model the partial thermalization of high-frequency vibrations, which is a pure quantum effect. By applying the method to carbon nanotubes, we show that the consideration of the color noise in the Langevin equation allows to reproduce the temperature evolution of the specific heat with good accuracy.

Operating molecular transistors as heat pumps

We study heat transport in transistor-like devices composed of two reservoirs and a gate electrode, with a ballistic electronic one-dimensional system connected between the two reservoirs and interacting with a laser field. We derive in a simple way an equation for the heat flux in terms of the Floquet-Green operator of the system. As a case example, we investigate a two-level transistor and find that the laser field can produce a net heat flow out of either one of the reservoirs. The direction of this flow is determined by the gate voltage. We study numerically the dependence of this heat-pump on the relevant parameters of the system and show that there is a minimum temperature below which it does not operate.

Quantum Depletion of a Soliton Condensate

We present rigorous results on the diagonalization of Bogoliubov Hamilto- nian for a soliton condensate. Using the complete and orthonomalized set of eigenfunction for the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, we calculate ex- actly the quantum depletion of the condensate and show that two degenerate zero-modes, which originate from a U(1) guage- and a translational-symmetry breaking of the system, induce the quantum diffusion and transverse instabil- ity of the soliton condensate.

Decoherence and localization in tunneling process under influence of one external degree of freedom

We investigate numerically the tunneling effect under influence of another particle in a double well system. Such influence from only one degree of freedom makes decoherence and quantum-classical transition, i.e., suppression of the tunneling effect. The decoherence happens even for cases that the influence is from a particle of very small mass, and it has virtually no effect in the corresponding classical dynamics. There are cases similar to dynamical localization that the suppressed tunneling rate is several times smaller than the classical counterpart. This result is relevant for understanding quantitatively the dynamical process of decoherence and quantum to classical transition.

Asymmetric Properties of Heat Conduction in a One-Dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova Model

In this Letter, we show numerically that the rectifying effect of heat flux in a one-dimensional two-segment Frenkel-Kontorova chain demonstrated in recent literature is merely available under the limit of the weak coupling between the two constituent segments. Surprisingly, the rectifying effect will be reversed when the properties of the interface and the system size change. The two types of asymmetric heat conduction are dominated by different mechanisms, which are all induced by the nonlinearity. We further discuss the possibility of the experimental realization of thermal diode or rectifier devices.

Modification to the pre-factor of the semiclassical propagator

We modify the pre-factor of the semiclassical propagator to improve its efficiency in practical implementations. The new pre-factor represents the smooth portion of an orbit's contribution, and leads to fast convergence in numerical calculations. As an illustration of the accuracy and efficiency of the resultant propagator, we numerically calculate overlaps between quantum and semiclassical wave functions, as well as low-lying spectrum density in a 10-dimensional system contains unstable classical orbits. This sheds light on applying semiclassical propagator to high dimensional systems.

Landau-Zener tunneling with many-body quantum effects in crystals of molecular magnets

We present a quantum interpretation of the heights in hysteresis of $Fe_{8}$ molecule at lower temperatures by treating the crystal as an Ising spin system with the dipolar interaction between spins. Then we apply it to two limit cases : rapid and adiabatic regions. Our theoretical analysis is in agreement with the experimental observation in these regions, which indicates that the steps in hysteresis loops of magnetization of Fe$_{8}$ at lower temperatures show a pure quantum process.

Polarization and decoherence in a two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate

We theoretically investigate polarization properties of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and influence of decoherence induced by environment on BEC polarization through introducing four BEC Stokes operators which are quantum analog of the classical Stokes parameters for a light field. BEC polarization states can be geometrically described by a Poincaré sphere defined by expectation values of BEC Stokes operators. Without decoherence, it is shown that nonlinear inter-atomic interactions in the BEC induce periodic polarization oscillations whose periods depend on the difference between self-interaction in each component and inter-component interaction strengths. In particular, when inter-atomic nonlinear self-interaction in each BEC component equals inter-component nonlinear interaction, Stokes vector associated with Stokes operators precesses around a fixed axis in the dynamic evolution of the BEC. The value of the processing frequency is determined by the strength of the linear coupling between two components of the BEC. When decoherence is involved, we find each component of the Stokes vector decays which implies that decoherence depolarizes the BEC.
