Entanglement as a signature of quantum chaos

We explore the dynamics of entanglement in classically chaotic systems by considering a multiqubit system that behaves collectively as a spin system obeying the dynamics of the quantum kicked top. In the classical limit, the kicked top exhibits both regular and chaotic dynamics depending on the strength of the chaoticity parameter $κ$ in the Hamiltonian. We show that the entanglement of the multiqubit system, considered for both bipartite and pairwise entanglement, yields a signature of quantum chaos. Whereas bipartite entanglement is enhanced in the chaotic region, pairwise entanglement is suppressed. Furthermore, we define a time-averaged entangling power and show that this entangling power changes markedly as $κ$ moves the system from being predominantly regular to being predominantly chaotic, thus sharply identifying the edge of chaos. When this entangling power is averaged over initial states, it yields a signature of global chaos. The qualitative behavior of this global entangling power is similar to that of the classical Lyapunov exponent.

Heat conduction in one-dimensional Yukawa chains

Heat conduction in one-dimensional Yukawa chains is investigated. It is shown numerically that it has the abnormal heat conduction which is proportional to the system size. Effects of asymmetric external potential, the modified Frenkel-Kontorova one, on the heat conduction of system are also studied. It is found that the asymmetric property of external potential can induce asymmetric thermal conductivity that can be used to be a effective thermal rectifier. In certain of system parameters the heat flux are significantly different for two opposite direction. One can parametrically control the heat flux through this system by changing the potential strength and width.

Bipartite entanglement and localization of one-particle states

We study bipartite entanglement in a general one-particle state, and find that the linear entropy, quantifying the bipartite entanglement, is directly connected to the paricitpation ratio, charaterizing the state localization. The more extended the state is, the more entangled the state. We apply the general formalism to investigate ground-state and dynamical properties of entanglement in the one-dimensional Harper model.

Mode entanglement of electrons in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model

We study the mode entanglement in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, and found that behaviors of quantum entanglement are distinct before and after the transition by breaking of analyticity. We show that the more extended the electron is, the more entangled the corresponding state. Finally, a quantitative relation is given between the average square of the concurrence quantifying the degree of entanglement and the participation ratio characterizing the degree of localization.

Turbulence control by developing a spiral wave with a periodic signal injection in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

Turbulence control in the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is investigated. A new approach is proposed for the control purpose. In the presence of a small spiral wave seed initiation, a fully developed turbulence can be completely annihilated by injecting a single periodic signal to a small fixed space area around the spiral wave tip. The control is achieved in a parameter region where the spiral wave of the uncontrolled system is absolutely unstable. The robustness, convenience and high control efficiency of this method is emphasized, and the mechanism underlying these practical advantages are intuitively understood.

Non-Kramers degeneracy and oscillatory tunnel splittings in the biaxial Spin System

We have investigated analytically quantum tunneling of large spin in the biaxial spin system with the magnetic field applied along the hard and medium anisotropy axes by using a purely quantum-mechanical approach. When the magnetic field parallels the hard axis, the tunnel splittings of all the energy level pairs are oscillatory as a function of the magnetic field. The quenching points are completely determined by the coexistence of solutions of the Ince's equation. When the magnetic field points the medium axis, the tunnel splitting oscillations disappear due to no coexistence of solutions. These results coincide the recent experimental observations in the nanomagnet Fe$_8$.

Driven Dynamics: A Probable Photodriven Frenkel-Kontorova Model

In this study, we examine the dynamics of a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova chain consisting of nanosize clusters (the ''particles'') and photochromic molecules (the ''bonds''), and being subjected to a periodic substrate potential. Whether the whole chain should be running or be locked depends on both the frequency and the wavelength of the light (keeping the other parameters fixed), as observed through numerical simulation. In the locked state, the particles are bound at the bottom of the external potential and vibrate backwards and forwards at a constant amplitude. In the running state, the initially fed energy is transformed into directed motion as a whole. It is of interest to note that the driving energy is introduced to the system by the irradiation of light, and the driven mechanism is based on the dynamical competition between the inherent lengths of the moving object (the chain) and the supporting carrier (the isotropic surface). However, the most important is that the light-induced conformational changes of the chromophore lead to the time-and-space dependence of the rest lengths of the bonds.

Fringe Structure in the Phase-Space Dynamics of Atomic Stabilization in An Intense Field

An analytical expression of a Floquet operator, which describes the evolution of a wave packet in combined atomic and an intense laser field,is obtained approximately in the stabilization regime. Both the classical and quantum versions of the Floquet operator are used to study the phase-space dynamics of atomic stabilization, and the 'fringe structure' in the phase-space is clearly demonstrated. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamical mechanism and characters of this striking structure, and find that this structure is very closely related to the classical invariant manifolds.

Electronic properties of the 1D Frenkel-Kontorova model

The energy spectra and quantum diffusion of an electron in a 1D incommensurate Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model are studied numerically. We found that the spectral and dynamical properties of electron display quite different behaviors in invariance circle regime and in Cantorus regime. In the former case, it is similar to that of the Harper model, whereas in the latter case, it is similar to that of the Fibonacci model. The relationship between spectral and transport properties is discussed.

Finite thermal conductivity in 1D models having zero Lyapunov exponents

Heat conduction in three types of 1D channels are studied. The channels consist of two parallel walls, right triangles as scattering obstacles, and noninteracting particles. The triangles are placed along the walls in three different ways: (a) periodic, (b) disordered in height, and (c) disordered in position. The Lyapunov exponents in all three models are zero because of the flatness of triangle sides. It is found numerically that the temperature gradient can be formed in all three channels, but the Fourier heat law is observed only in two disordered ones. The results show that there might be no direct connection between chaos (in the sense of positive Lyapunov exponent) and the normal thermal conduction.

Nonlinear Modulation of Multi-Dimensional Lattice Waves

The equations governing weakly nonlinear modulations of $N$-dimensional lattices are considered using a quasi-discrete multiple-scale approach. It is found that the evolution of a short wave packet for a lattice system with cubic and quartic interatomic potentials is governed by generalized Davey-Stewartson (GDS) equations, which include mean motion induced by the oscillatory wave packet through cubic interatomic interaction. The GDS equations derived here are more general than those known in the theory of water waves because of the anisotropy inherent in lattices. Generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations describing the evolution of long wavelength acoustic modes in two and three dimensional lattices are also presented. Then the modulational instability of a $N$-dimensional Stokes lattice wave is discussed based on the $N$-dimensional GDS equations obtained. Finally, the one- and two-soliton solutions of two-dimensional GDS equations are provided by means of Hirota's bilinear transformation method.

Quantum Frenkel-Kontorova Model

This paper gives a review of our recent work on the quantum Frenkel-Kontorova model. Using the squeezed state theory and the quantum Monte Carlo method, we have studied the effects of quantum fluctuations on the Aubry transition and the behavior of the ground state wave function. We found that quantum fluctuations renormalize the sinusoidal standard map to a sawtooth map. Although quantum fluctuations have smeared the Aubry transition, the remnants of this transition are still discernible. The ground state wave function also changes from an extended state to a localized state. The squeezed state results agree very well with those from the Monte Carlo and mean field studies.

Can disorder induce a finite thermal conductivity in 1D lattices?

We study heat conduction in one dimensional mass disordered harmonic and anharmonic lattices. It is found that the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the disordered anharmonic lattice is finite at low temperature, whereas it diverges as $κ\sim N^{0.43}$ at high temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that a unique nonequilibrium stationary state in the disordered harmonic lattice does not exist at all.

Mode-locking of incommensurate phase by quantum zero point energy in the Frenkel-Kontorova model

In this paper, it is shown that a configuration modulated system described by the Frenkel-Kontorova model can be locked at an incommensurate phase when the quantum zero point energy is taken into account. It is also found that the specific heat for an incommensurate phase shows different parameter-dependence in sliding phase and pinning phase. These findings provide a possible way for experimentalists to verify the phase transition by breaking of analyticity.

Reply to Dhar's comment on "Can disorder induce a finite thermal conductivity in 1D lattices"

In his comment, Dhar (cond-mat/0106349) claims that the existence and uniqueness of a nonequilibrium stationary state has been proved by Lebowitz et al. We should point out that our observation does not contradict the proof. They have only proved that when a (mass) disordered harmonic chain is placed in contact with stochastic reservoirs of the Langevin type, a nonequilibrium stationary state can be reached. However, they didn't prove the existence and uniqueness of the nonequilibrium stationary state for the general case, namely, when the chain is in contact with general thermostated reservoirs (see Bonneto et al. math-ph/0002052).

A cellular automaton traffic flow model between the Fukui-Ishibashi and Nagel-Schreckenberg models

We propose and study a new one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton (CA) model of high speed vehicles with the Fukui-Ishibashi-type acceleration for all cars and the Nagel-Schreckenberg-type (NS) stochastic delay only for the cars following the trail of the car ahead. The main difference in the delay scenario between the new model and the NS model is that a car with spacing ahead longer than the velocity limit $M$ may not be delayed in the new model. By using a car-oriented mean field theory, we derive the fundamental diagrams of the average speed as the function of car density analytically. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Fejer average and the short term behaviors of a wave packet in infinite square well

The first two period behaviors of a quantum wave packet in an infinite square well potential is studied. First, the short term behavior of expectation value of a quantity on an equally weighted wave packet (EWWP) is in classical limit proved to reproduce the Fej'{e}r average of the Fourier series decomposition of the corresponding classical quantity. Second, in order to best mimic the classical behavior, a nice relation between number $N$ of stationary states in the EWWP with the average quantum number $n$ as $N\thickapprox \sqrt{n}$ is revealed. Third, since the Fejér average can only approximate the classical quantity, it carries an uncertainty which in large quantum number case is almost the same as the quantum uncertainty.

Parametric Simultons in Nonlinear Lattices

Parametric simultaneous solitary wave (simulton) excitations are shown possible in nonlinear lattices. Taking a one-dimensional diatomic lattice with a cubic potential as an example we consider the nonlinear coupling between the upper cutoff mode of acoustic branch (as a fundamental wave) and the upper cutoff mode of optical branch (as a second harmonic wave). Based on a quasi-discreteness approach the Karamzin-Sukhorukov equations for two slowly varying amplitudes of the fundamental and the second harmonic waves in the lattice are derived when the condition of second harmonic generation is satisfied. The lattice simulton solutions are explicitly given and the results show that these lattice simultons can be nonpropagating when the wave vectors of the fundamental wave and the second harmonic waves are exactly at $π/a$ (where $a$ is the lattice constant) and zero, respectively.
