Design of a $μ$SR spectrometer with ultrahigh arrays at China Spallation Neutron Source

A new muon source has been proposed to conduct muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance ($μ$SR) measurements at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). Only 1 Hz of the CSNS proton beams (25 Hz in total) will be allocated for muon production. To make better use of muons in every pulse, an ultrahigh-array $μ$SR spectrometer (UHAM) with thousands of detector channels is under design. Due to such a high granularity of detectors, multiple counting events generated from particle scattering or spiral motions of positrons in a strong longitudinal field should be carefully considered in the design. Six different structures were modeled and simulated based on two types of angular orientations (parallel arrangement and pointing arrangement) and three kinds of spectrometer geometries (cylinder, cone and sphere). A quality factor, $Q$, was proposed to evaluate the performance of these structures by integrating their impacts on the overall asymmetry, the counting rate and the percentage of multiple counts. According to the simulation, the conical structure with detectors pointing to the sample has the highest $Q$ in both zero field and longitudinal field. The results also show that all kinds of structures cannot be operated under strong longitudinal fields with a strength over 2 T. The full simulation of a $μ$SR spectrometer can provide good guidance for the construction of the UHAM in the upcoming upgrade of CSNS.

Design of 32-channel TDC Based on Single FPGA for μSR Spectrometer at CSNS

Muon Spin Rotation, Relaxation and Resonance (μSR) technology has an irreplaceable role in studying the microstructure and properties of materials, especially micro-magnetic properties. An experimental muon source is being built in China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) now. At the same time, a 128-channel μSR spectrometer as China's first μSR spectrometer is being developed. The time spectrum of μSR can be obtained by fitting the curve of positron count rate with time. This paper presents a 32-channel Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) implemented in a Xilinx Virtex-6 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for measuring the positron's flight time of μSR Spectrometer. Signal of each channel is sampled by 16 equidistant shifted-phase 200 MHz sampling clocks, so the TDC bin size is 312.5ps. The measuring range is up to 327us. This TDC has the ability to store multiple hit signals in a short time with a deep hit-buffer up to 512. Time tag is added to each data to record the moment when the data was detected. Programmable time window and channel shielding give the flexibility to choose the time range and channels of interest. The delay of each channel can be calibrated. The data is transmitted to data acquisition system (DAQ) through Gigabit Ethernet. TDC and control logic are configured in real time by DAQ. The results of test show that the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) precision of single channel is better than 273 ps with a low sensitivity to temperature and the linearity is pretty well.

A segmented conical electric lens for optimization of the beam spot of the low-energy muon facility at PSI: a Geant4 simulation analysis

The low-energy muon facility at PSI provides nearly fully polarized positive muons with tunable energies in the keV range to carry out muon spin rotation (LE-muSR) experiments with nanometer depth resolution on thin films, heterostructures, and near-surface regions. The low-energy muon beam is focused and transported to the sample by electrostatic lenses. In order to achieve a minimum beam spot size at the sample position and to enable the steering of the beam in the horizontal and vertical direction, a special electrostatic device has been implemented close to the sample position. It consists of a cylinder at ground potential followed by four conically shaped electrodes, which can be operated at different electric potential. In LE-muSR experiments, an electric field at the sample along the beam direction can be applied to accelerate/decelerate muons to different energies (0.5-30 keV). Additionally, a horizontal or vertical magnetic field can be superimposed for transverse or longitudinal field muSR experiments. The focusing properties of the conical lens in the presence of these additional electric and magnetic fields have been investigated and optimized by Geant4 simulations. Some experimental tests were also performed and show that the simulation well describes the experimental setup.

A new muon-pion collection and transport system design using superconducting solenoids based on CSNS

A new muon and pion capture system is proposed for the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), currently under construction. Using about 4\% of the pulsed proton beam (1.6 GeV, 4 kW and 1 Hz) of CSNS to bombard a cylindrical graphite target inside a superconducting solenoid, both surface muons and pions can be acquired. The acceptance of this novel capture system - a graphite target wrapped up by a superconducting solenoid - is larger than the normal muon beam lines using quadrupoles at one side of the separated muon target. The muon and pion production at different capture magnetic fields was calculated using Geant4. The bending angle of the capture solenoid with respect to the proton beam was also optimized in simulation to achieve more muons and pions. Based on the layout of the muon experimental area reserved at the CSNS project, a preliminary muon beam line was designed with multi-purpose muon spin rotation areas (surface, decay and low-energy muons). Finally, high-flux surface muons (10$^8$/s) and decay muons (10$^9$/s) simulated by G4beamline will be available at the end of the decay solenoid based on the first phase of CSNS. This collection and transport system will be a very effective beam line at a proton current of 2.5 $μ$A.

Accurate theoretical prediction on positron lifetime of bulk materials

Based on the first-principles calculations, we perform an initiatory statistical assessment on the reliability level of theoretical positron lifetime of bulk material. We found the original generalized gradient approximation (GGA) form of the enhancement factor and correlation potentials overestimates the effect of the gradient factor. Furthermore, an excellent agreement between model and data with the difference being the noise level of the data is found in this work. In addition, we suggest a new GGA form of the correlation scheme which gives the best performance. This work demonstrates that a brand-new reliability level is achieved for the theoretical prediction on positron lifetime of bulk material and the accuracy of the best theoretical scheme can be independent on the type of materials.

Method for measuring prompt gamma-rays generated by D-T neutrons bombarding a depleted uranium spherical shell

The prompt gamma-ray spectrum from depleted uranium (DU) spherical shells induced by 14 MeV D-T neutrons is measured. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation gives the largest prompt gamma flux with the optimal thickness of the DU spherical shells 3-5 cm and the optimal frequency of neutron pulse 1 MHz. The method of time of flight and pulse shape coincidence with energy (DC-TOF) is proposed, and the subtraction of the background gamma-rays discussed in detail. The electron recoil spectrum and time spectrum of the prompt gamma-rays are obtained based on a 2"*2" BC501A liquid scintillator detector. The energy spectrum and time spectrum of prompt gamma-rays are obtained based on an iterative unfolding method that can remove the influence of γ-rays response matrix and pulsed neutron shape. The measured time spectrum and the calculated results are roughly consistent with each other. Experimental prompt gamma-ray spectrum in the 0.4-3 MeV energy region agree well with MC simulation based on the ENDF/BVI.5 library, and the discrepancies for the integral quantities of gamma-rays of energy 0.4-1 MeV and 1-3 MeV are 9.2% and 1.1%, respectively.

Monte Carlo simulation of prompt gamma-ray spectra from depleted uranium under D-T neutron irradiation and electron recoil spectra in a liquid scintillator detector

To overcome the problem of inefficient computing time and unreliable results in MCNP5 calculation, a two-step method is adopted to calculate the energy deposition of prompt gamma-rays in detectors for depleted uranium spherical shells under D-T neutrons irradiation. In the first step, the gamma-ray spectrum for energy below 7 MeV is calculated by MCNP5 code; secondly, the electron recoil spectrum in a BC501A liquid scintillator detector is simulated based on EGSnrc Monte Carlo Code with the gamma-ray spectrum from the first step as input. The comparison of calculated results with experimental ones shows that the simulations agree well with experiment in the energy region 0.4-3 MeV for the prompt gamma-ray spectrum and below 4 MeVee for the electron recoil spectrum. The reliability of the two-step method in this work is validated.
