Spin bath mediated long-lived coherent oscillations of NV centers in diamond

Decoherence is the biggest bottleneck in all quantum technologies. For nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, the loss of coherence is caused by the electron and nuclear spin bath of the diamond lattice. Here, we demonstrate that the spin bath - that typically causes decoherence - entangles the spin states of the NV electron and the host $^{14}$N nucleus. The many-body interaction between the $^{14}$N nucleus - electron - bath spins at an energy level anti-crossing occurring for an applied magnetic field orientation perpendicular to the NV axis is responsible for this effect. This is observed experimentally in NV ensembles via electron spin-echo measurements, where the echo envelope is modulated at the frequency of a $^{14}$N nuclear spin transition. Using numerical simulations, we show that the spin bath coupling to the NV centers is essential for observing this modulation. Due to the zero first-order Zeeman effect at the anti-crossing, the observed oscillations have long spin-echo coherence times, 2--3 times those at the parallel magnetic field orientation. The oscillation frequency is highly stable and robust against environmental fluctuations. These findings provide new opportunities for fundamental studies of many-body physics and quantum sensing.

Towards second-long electron spin coherence of a telecom quantum emitter in naturally abundant CeO$_2$

Rare-earth-ion-doped crystals has emerged as a promising platform for quantum technologies, owing to their narrow telecom-band optical emission, long spin memory, and compatibility with silicon integrated photonic architectures. However, the realization of scalable quantum devices requires host materials with intrinsically dilute spin environments to suppress decoherence. In this context, erbium (Er$^{3+}$) doped cerium oxide (CeO$_2$) is an attractive candidate due to the ultra-low concentration of nuclear spins in the host matrix and its compatibility with silicon-based technologies. Here we perform a comprehensive investigation of the coherence properties of Er$^{3+}$ electron spin qubit in CeO$_2$ via semiclassical as well as detailed cluster correlation expansion simulations. By systematically exploring magnetic field strength, pulse sequences, erbium concentration, and spin temperature, we identify regimes where decoherence from the spin bath is strongly suppressed. Our investigations illustrate that at dilute doping concentration (of the order of 10 ppb) and sub-Kelvin temperatures, operation near clock transitions enables Hahn-echo coherence times to approach the second timescale even at natural isotopic abundance. Importantly, from a practical standpoint, coherence times on the order of $\sim 10$ ms are expected even at liquid helium temperature (about 2 K) for similar concentrations. Moreover, we demonstrate that an additional enhancement can be obtained with conventional multi-$\pi$-pulse dynamical decoupling protocols. Thus, our findings establish Er$^{3+}$ doped CeO$_2$ as a front-runner for realizing spin qubits, quantum memories, and integrated quantum networks.

Impact of irradiation conditions on the magnetic field sensitivity of spin defects in hBN nano flakes

We study $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ centres generated by helium focused ion beam (FIB) irradiation in thin ($\sim$70 nm) hBN nanoflakes, in order to investigate the effect of implantation conditions on the key parameters that influence the magnetic field sensitivity of $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ quantum sensors. Using a combination of photoluminescence, optically detected magnetic resonance, and Raman spectroscopy, we examine the competing factors of maximising signal intensity through larger $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ concentration against the degradation in spin coherence and lattice quality observed at high ion fluences. Our results indicate that both the $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ spin properties and hBN lattice parameters are largely preserved up to an ion fluence of $10^{14}$ ions/cm$^2$, and beyond this significant degradation occurs in both. At the optimal implantation dose, an AC magnetic sensitivity of $\sim 1\,\mu\mathrm{T}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ is achieved. Using the patterned implantation enabled by the FIB, we find that $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ centres and the associated lattice damage are well localised to the implanted regions. This work demonstrates how careful selection of fabrication parameters can be used to optimise the properties of $V_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ centres in hBN, supporting their application as quantum sensors based on 2D materials.

Identifying optimal magnetic field configurations for decoherence mitigation of boron vacancies in hexagonal boron nitride

The negatively charged boron vacancy center in 2D hexagonal boron nitride has emerged as a promising quantum sensor. However, its sensitivity is constrained due to ubiquitous nuclear spins in the environment. The nuclear spins, hyperfine coupled with the central electron spin, effectively behave as magnetic field fluctuators, leading to rapid decoherence. Here, we explore the effectiveness of static magnetic field strength and orientation in realizing peculiar subspaces that can lead to enhanced spin coherence. Specifically, using detailed numerical simulations of the spin Hamiltonian, we identify specific field configurations that minimize energy gradients and, consequently, are expected to facilitate decoherence suppression. We also develop an approximate analytical model based on the perturbation theory that accurately predicts these low-gradient subspaces for magnetic fields aligned with the electron spin quantization axis, applicable not only to boron vacancies but to any spin-1 electronic system coupled to nearby nuclear spins. Furthermore, to stimulate experimental validation, we estimate coherence lifetimes as a function of various bias field configurations and demonstrate that significant decoherence suppression can indeed be achieved in certain regions. These findings and the developed methodology offer valuable insights for mitigating decoherence in a low-field regime.
