Analysis of Discrete-Time MIMO OFDM-Based Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation

Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) is a novel modulation scheme designed in the Doppler-delay domain to fully exploit time and frequency diversity of general time-varying channels. In this paper, we present a novel discrete-time analysis of OFDM-based OTFS transceiver with a concise and vectorized input-output relationship that clearly characterizes the contribution of each underlying signal processing block in such systems. When adopting cyclic prefix in the time domain, our analysis reveals that the proposed MIMO OTFS and OFDM systems have the same ergodic capacity despite the well-known fact that the former has great advantages in low-complexity receiver design for high Doppler channels. The proposed discrete-time vectorized formulation is applicable to general fast fading channels with arbitrary window functions. It also enables practical low-complexity receiver design for which such a concise formulation of the input-output relationship is of great benefits.

Low Complexity Modem Structure for OFDM-based Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a two-dimensional signaling technique that has recently emerged in the literature to tackle the time-varying (TV) wireless channels. OTFS deploys the Doppler-delay plane to multiplex the transmit data where the time variations of the TV channel are integrated over time and hence the equivalent channel relating the input and output of the system boils down to a time-invariant one. This signaling technique can be implemented on the top of a given multicarrier waveform with the addition of precoding and post-processing units to the modulator and demodulator. In this paper, we present discrete-time formulation of an OFDM-based OTFS system. We argue against deployment of window functions at the OTFS transmitter in realistic scenarios and thus limit any sort of windowing to the receiver side. We study the channel impact in discrete-time providing deeper insights into OTFS systems. Moreover, our derivations lead to simplified modulator and demodulator structures that are far simpler than those in the literature.

Achieving Near MAP Performance with an Excited Markov Chain Monte Carlo MIMO Detector

We introduce a revised derivation of the bitwise Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector. The new approach resolves the previously reported high SNR stalling problem of MCMC without the need for hybridization with another detector method or adding heuristic temperature scaling factors. Another common problem with MCMC algorithms is the unknown convergence time making predictable fixed-length implementations problematic. When an insufficient number of iterations is used on a slowly converging example, the output LLRs can be unstable and overconfident. Therefore, we develop a method to identify rare slowly converging runs and mitigate their degrading effects on the soft-output information. This improves forward-error-correcting code performance and removes a symptomatic error floor in BER plots. Next, pseudo-convergence is identified with a novel way to visualize the internal behavior of the Gibbs sampler. An effective and efficient pseudo-convergence detection and escape strategy is suggested. Finally, the new excited MCMC (X-MCMC) detector is shown to have near maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) performance even with challenging, realistic, highly-correlated channels at the maximum MIMO sizes and modulation rates supported by the 802.11ac WiFi specification, 8x8 MIMO 256 QAM.

Prototype Filter Design for FBMC in Massive MIMO Channels

We perform an asymptotic study on the performance of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) in the context of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO). We show that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) cannot grow unboundedly by increasing the number of base station (BS) antennas, and is upper bounded by a certain deterministic value. This is a result of the correlation between the multi-antenna combining tap values and the channel impulse responses between the terminals and the BS antennas. To solve this problem, we introduce a simple FBMC prototype filter design method that removes this correlation, enabling us to achieve arbitrarily large SINR values by increasing the number of BS antennas.

Time Reversal with Post-Equalization for OFDM without CP in Massive MIMO

This paper studies the possibility of eliminating the redundant cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The absence of CP increases the bandwidth efficiency in expense of intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI). It is known that in massive MIMO, different types of interference fade away as the number of base station (BS) antennas tends to infinity. In this paper, we investigate if the channel distortions in the absence of CP are averaged out in the large antenna regime. To this end, we analytically study the performance of the conventional maximum ratio combining (MRC) and realize that there always remains some residual interference leading to saturation of signal to interference (SIR). This saturation of SIR is quantified through mathematical equations. Moreover, to resolve the saturation problem, we propose a technique based on time-reversal MRC with zero forcing multiuser detection (TR-ZF). Thus, the SIR of our proposed TR-ZF does not saturate and is a linear function of the number of BS antennas. We also show that TR-ZF only needs one OFDM demodulator per user irrespective of the number of BS antennas; reducing the BS signal processing complexity significantly. Finally, we corroborate our claims as well as analytical results through simulations.

Improving Bandwidth Efficiency of FBMC-OQAM Through Virtual Symbols

Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems that are based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM), namely, FBMC-OQAM, have been criticized for their inefficiency in the use of spectral resources, because of the long ramp-up and ramp-down tails at the beginning and the end of each data packet, respectively. We propose a novel method for shortening these tails. By appending a set of virtual (i.e., none data carrying) symbols to the beginning and the end of each packet, and clever selection of these symbols, we show that the ramp-up and rampdown tails in FMBC-OQAM can be suppressed to an extent that they deem as negligible and thus may be ignored. This shortens the length of signal burst in each FBMC-OQAM packet, hence, improves on its bandwidth efficiency, viz., the same data is transmitted over a shorter period of time. We develop an optimization method that allows computation of virtual symbols, for each data packet. Simulation results show that, compared to existing methods, the proposed tail-shortening approach leads to a superior out-of-band (OOB) emission performance and a much lower error vector magnitude (EVM) for the demodulated symbols.

Asynchronous Performance of Circularly Pulse-Shaped Waveforms for 5G

The fifth generation of wireless networks (5G) necessitates the use of waveforms with loose constraints on synchronization in multiuser scenarios. Also, carrier aggregation, as a way to better utilize the spectrum in 5G, needs a waveform with low out-of-band (OOB) emission. Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) and circular filter bank multicarrier (C-FBMC) are two candidate waveforms that fulfill these requirements. Both GFDM and C-FBMC operate based on circular convolution, and use cyclic prefix to combat channel response. In this paper, we develop an analytical technique for examining the OOB emission and multiuser interference (MUI) in circularly shaped waveforms, like GFDM and C-FBMC. To stay focused, the study in this paper is limited to C-FBMC modulation. However, the approach we take is trivially extendable to other waveforms as well. We derive equations that quantify OOB emission and MUI. Our analysis allows us to identify the source of OOB emission and MUI. This leads us to quantify the methods proposed by other researchers to decrease OOB emission and MUI. Moreover, we quantify the impact of signal windowing at the transmitter and receiver in reducing OOB emission and MUI, respectively.

Impact of Timing and Frequency Offsets on Multicarrier Waveform Candidates for 5G

This paper presents a study of the candidate waveforms for 5G when they are subject to timing and carrier frequency offset. These waveforms are: orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM), universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC), circular filter bank multicarrier (C-FBMC), and linear filter bank multicarrier (FBMC). We are particularly interested in multiple access interference (MAI) when a number of users transmit their signals to a base station in an asynchronous or a quasi-synchronous manner. We identify the source of MAI in these waveforms and present some numerical analysis that confirm our findings. The goal of this study is to answer the following question, "Which one of the 5G candidate waveforms has more relaxed synchronization requirements?".

Frequency Spreading Equalization in Multicarrier Massive MIMO

Application of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as an effective method for signaling over massive MIMO channels has been recently proposed. This paper further expands the application of FBMC to massive MIMO by applying frequency spreading equalization (FSE) to these channels. FSE allows us to achieve a more accurate equalization. Hence, higher number of bits per symbol can be transmitted and the bandwidth of each subcarrier can be widened. Widening the bandwidth of each subcarrier leads to (i) higher bandwidth efficiency; (ii) lower complexity; (iii) lower sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO); (iv) reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); and (iv) reduced latency. All these appealing advantages have a direct impact on the digital as well as analog circuitry that is needed for the system implementation. In this paper, we develop the mathematical formulation of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) FSE for massive MIMO systems. This analysis guides us to decide on the number of subcarriers that will be sufficient for practical channel models.

Pilot Decontamination in CMT-based Massive MIMO Networks

Pilot contamination problem in massive MIMO networks operating in time-division duplex (TDD) mode can limit their expected capacity to a great extent. This paper addresses this problem in cosine modulated multitone (CMT) based massive MIMO networks; taking advantage of their so-called blind equalization property. We extend and apply the blind equalization technique from single antenna case to multi-cellular massive MIMO systems and show that it can remove the channel estimation errors (due to pilot contamination effect) without any need for cooperation between different cells or transmission of additional training information. Our numerical results advocate the efficacy of the proposed blind technique in improving the channel estimation accuracy and removal of the residual channel estimation errors caused by the users of the other cells.

Interference Localization for Uplink OFDMA Systems in Presence of CFOs

Multiple carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) present in the uplink of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems adversely affect subcarrier orthogonality and impose a serious performance loss. In this paper, we propose the application of time domain receiver windowing to concentrate the leakage caused by CFOs to a few adjacent subcarriers with almost no additional computational complexity. This allows us to approximate the interference matrix with a quasi-banded matrix by neglecting small elements outside a certain band which enables robust and computationally efficient signal detection. The proposed CFO compensation technique is applicable to all types of subcarrier assignment techniques. Simulation results show that the quasi-banded approximation of the interference matrix is accurate enough to provide almost the same bit error rate performance as that of the optimal solution. The excellent performance of our proposed method is also proven through running an experiment using our FPGA-based system setup.

Filter Bank Multicarrier for Massive MIMO

This paper introduces filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) as a potential candidate in the application of massive MIMO communication. It also points out the advantages of FBMC over OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) in the application of massive MIMO. The absence of cyclic prefix in FBMC increases the bandwidth efficiency. In addition, FBMC allows carrier aggregation straightforwardly. Self-equalization, a property of FBMC in massive MIMO that is introduced in this paper, has the impact of reducing (i) complexity; (ii) sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO); (iii) peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR); (iv) system latency; and (v) increasing bandwidth efficiency. The numerical results that corroborate these claims are presented.
