Gauduchon metrics with prescribed volume form

We prove that on any compact complex manifold one can find Gauduchon metrics with prescribed volume form. This is equivalent to prescribing the Chern-Ricci curvature of the metrics, and thus solves a conjecture of Gauduchon from 1984.

$C^{1,1}$ regularity for degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equations and geodesic rays

We prove a $C^{1,1}$ estimate for solutions of complex Monge-Ampère equations on compact Kähler manifolds with possibly nonempty boundary, in a degenerate cohomology class. This strengthens previous estimates of Phong-Sturm. As applications we deduce the local $C^{1,1}$ regularity of geodesic rays in the space of Kähler metrics associated to a test configuration, as well as the local $C^{1,1}$ regularity of quasi-psh envelopes in nef and big classes away from the non-Kähler locus.

On the $C^{1,1}$ regularity of geodesics in the space of Kähler metrics

We prove that any two Kahler potentials on a compact Kahler manifold can be connected by a geodesic segment of C^{1,1} regularity. This follows from an a priori interior real Hessian bound for solutions of the nondegenerate complex Monge-Ampere equation, which is independent of a positive lower bound for the right hand side.

The Kähler-Ricci flow, Ricci-flat metrics and collapsing limits

We investigate the Kahler-Ricci flow on holomorphic fiber spaces whose generic fiber is a Calabi-Yau manifold. We establish uniform metric convergence to a metric on the base, away from the singular fibers, and show that the rescaled metrics on the fibers converge to Ricci-flat Kahler metrics. This strengthens previous work of Song-Tian and others. We obtain analogous results for degenerations of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics.

The Monge-Ampère equation for (n-1)-plurisubharmonic functions on a compact Kähler manifold

A C^2 function on C^n is called (n-1)-plurisubharmonic in the sense of Harvey-Lawson if the sum of any n-1 eigenvalues of its complex Hessian is nonnegative. We show that the associated Monge-Ampere equation can be solved on any compact Kahler manifold. As a consequence we prove the existence of solutions to an equation of Fu-Wang-Wu, giving Calabi-Yau theorems for balanced, Gauduchon and strongly Gauduchon metrics on compact Kahler manifolds.

Geometric convergence of the Kähler-Ricci flow on complex surfaces of general type

We show that on smooth minimal surfaces of general type, the Kähler-Ricci flow starting at any initial Kähler metric converges in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a Kähler-Einstein orbifold surface. In particular, the diameter of the evolving metrics is uniformly bounded for all time and the Kähler-Ricci flow contracts all the holomorphic spheres with $(-2)$ self-intersection number to isolated orbifold points. Our estimates do not require a priori the existence of an orbifold Kähler-Einstein metric on the canonical model.

On a constant rank theorem for nonlinear elliptic PDEs

We give a new proof of Bian-Guan's constant rank theorem for nonlinear elliptic equations. Our approach is to use a linear expression of the eigenvalues of the Hessian instead of quotients of elementary symmetric functions.

The Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate and the Calabi-Yau equation

We give two applications of the Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate to the Calabi-Yau equation on symplectic four-manifolds. The first is solvability of the equation on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold for certain almost-Kahler structures assuming $S^1$-invariance, extending a result of Buzano-Fino-Vezzoni. The second is to reduce the general case of Donaldson's conjecture to a bound on the measure of a superlevel set of a scalar function.

The Kähler-Ricci flow on compact Kähler manifolds

These notes are based on a lecture series given at the Park City Math Institute in the summer of 2013. The notes are intended as a leisurely introduction to the Kähler-Ricci flow on compact Kähler manifolds, aimed at graduate students with some background in differential geometry.

Monge Ampère functionals and the second boundary value problem

We consider a Monge-Ampère functional and its corresponding second boundary value problem, a nonlinear fourth order PDE with two Dirichlet boundary conditions. This problem was solved by Trudinger-Wang and Le under the assumption that the right hand side of the equation is nonpositive. We remove this assumption, to settle the case of the second boundary value problem with arbitrary right hand side, in dimensions $n \ge 2$. In particular, this shows that one can prescribe the affine mean curvature of the graph of a convex function with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the function and the determinant of its Hessian. We relate our results, and the case of $n=1$, to a notion of properness for a certain functional on the set of convex functions.

Inoue surfaces and the Chern-Ricci flow

We investigate the Chern-Ricci flow, an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics, on Inoue surfaces. These are non-Kahler compact complex surfaces of type Class VII. We show that, after an initial conformal change, the flow always collapses the Inoue surface to a circle at infinite time, in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff.

Collapsing of the Chern-Ricci flow on elliptic surfaces

We investigate the Chern-Ricci flow, an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics generalizing the Kahler-Ricci flow, on elliptic bundles over a Riemann surface of genus greater than one. We show that, starting at any Gauduchon metric, the flow collapses the elliptic fibers and the metrics converge to the pullback of a Kahler-Einstein metric from the base. Some of our estimates are new even for the Kahler-Ricci flow. A consequence of our result is that, on every minimal non-Kahler surface of Kodaira dimension one, the Chern-Ricci flow converges in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff to an orbifold Kahler-Einstein metric on a Riemann surface.

$C^{2,α}$ estimates for nonlinear elliptic equations in complex and almost complex geometry

We describe how to use the perturbation theory of Caffarelli to prove Evans-Krylov type $C^{2,α}$ estimates for solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in complex geometry, assuming a bound on the Laplacian of the solution. Our results can be used to replace the various Evans-Krylov type arguments in the complex geometry literature with a sharper and more unified approach. In addition, our methods extend to almost-complex manifolds, and we use this to obtain a new local estimate for an equation of Donaldson.

On the evolution of a Hermitian metric by its Chern-Ricci form

We consider the evolution of a Hermitian metric on a compact complex manifold by its Chern-Ricci form. This is an evolution equation first studied by M. Gill, and coincides with the Kahler-Ricci flow if the initial metric is Kahler. We find the maximal existence time for the flow in terms of the initial data. We investigate the behavior of the flow on complex surfaces when the initial metric is Gauduchon, on complex manifolds with negative first Chern class, and on some Hopf manifolds. Finally, we discuss a new estimate for the complex Monge-Ampere equation on Hermitian manifolds.

Hermitian metrics, (n-1, n-1) forms and Monge-Ampère equations

We show existence of unique smooth solutions to the Monge-Ampere equation for (n-1)-plurisubharmonic functions on Hermitian manifolds, generalizing previous work of the authors. As a consequence we obtain Calabi-Yau theorems for Gauduchon and strongly Gauduchon metrics on a class of non-Kahler manifolds: those satisfying the Jost-Yau condition known as Astheno-Kahler. Gauduchon conjectured in 1984 that a Calabi-Yau theorem for Gauduchon metrics holds on all compact complex manifolds. We discuss another Monge-Ampere equation, recently introduced by Popovici, and show that the full Gauduchon conjecture can be reduced to a second order estimate of Hou-Ma-Wu type.

The J-flow on Kahler surfaces: a boundary case

We study the J-flow on Kahler surfaces when the Kahler class lies on the boundary of the open cone for which global smooth convergence holds, and satisfies a nonnegativity condition. We obtain a C^0 estimate and show that the J-flow converges smoothly to a singular Kahler metric away from a finite number of curves of negative self-intersection on the surface. We discuss an application to the Mabuchi energy functional on Kahler surfaces with ample canonical bundle.
