Lecture notes on the Kähler-Ricci flow

These lecture notes give an introduction to the Kahler-Ricci flow. They are based on lectures given by the authors at the conference "Analytic Aspects of Complex Algebraic Geometry", held at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathematiques in Luminy, in February 2011.

The Chern-Ricci flow on complex surfaces

The Chern-Ricci flow is an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics by their Chern-Ricci form, first introduced by Gill. Building on our previous work, we investigate this flow on complex surfaces. We establish new estimates in the case of finite time non-collapsing, anologous to some known results for the Kahler-Ricci flow. This provides evidence that the Chern-Ricci flow carries out blow-downs of exceptional curves on non-minimal surfaces. We also describe explicit solutions to the Chern-Ricci flow for various non-Kahler surfaces. On Hopf surfaces and Inoue surfaces these solutions, appropriately normalized, collapse to a circle in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff. For non-Kahler properly elliptic surfaces, our explicit solutions collapse to a Riemann surface. Finally, we define a Mabuchi energy functional for complex surfaces with vanishing first Bott-Chern class and show that it decreases along the Chern-Ricci flow.

Contracting exceptional divisors by the Kähler-Ricci flow II

We investigate the case of the Kahler-Ricci flow blowing down disjoint exceptional divisors with normal bundle O(-k) to orbifold points. We prove smooth convergence outside the exceptional divisors and global Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. In addition, we establish the result that the Gromov-Hausdorff limit coincides with the metric completion of the limiting metric under the flow. This improves and extends the previous work of the authors. We apply this to P^1-bundles which are higher-dimensional analogues of the Hirzebruch surfaces. In addition, we consider the case of a minimal surface of general type with only distinct irreducible (-2)-curves and show that solutions to the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow converge in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a Kahler-Einstein orbifold.

Contracting exceptional divisors by the Kähler-Ricci flow

We give a criterion under which a solution g(t) of the Kahler-Ricci flow contracts exceptional divisors on a compact manifold and can be uniquely continued on a new manifold. As t tends to the singular time T from each direction, we prove convergence of g(t) in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff and smooth convergence away from the exceptional divisors. We call this behavior for the Kahler-Ricci flow a canonical surgical contraction. In particular, our results show that the Kahler-Ricci flow on a projective algebraic surface will perform a sequence of canonical surgical contractions until, in finite time, either the minimal model is obtained, or the volume of the manifold tends to zero.

The Kähler-Ricci flow on projective bundles

We study the behaviour of the Kähler-Ricci flow on projective bundles. We show that if the initial metric is in a suitable Kähler class, then the fibers collapse in finite time and the metrics converge subsequentially in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a metric on the base.

The Kähler-Ricci flow on Hirzebruch surfaces

We investigate the metric behavior of the Kahler-Ricci flow on the Hirzebruch surfaces, assuming the initial metric is invariant under a maximal compact subgroup of the automorphism group. We show that, in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff, the flow either shrinks to a point, collapses to $\mathbb{P}^1$ or contracts an exceptional divisor, confirming a conjecture of Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf. We also show that similar behavior holds on higher-dimensional analogues of the Hirzebruch surfaces.

Estimates for the complex Monge-Ampère equation on Hermitian and balanced manifolds

We generalize Yau's estimates for the complex Monge-Ampere equation on compact manifolds in the case when the background metric is no longer Kahler. We prove $C^{\infty}$ a priori estimates for a solution of the complex Monge-Ampere equation when the background metric is Hermitian (in complex dimension two) or balanced (in higher dimensions), giving an alternative proof of a theorem of Cherrier. We relate this to recent results of Guan-Li.

The Calabi-Yau equation on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold

We prove that the Calabi-Yau equation can be solved on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold for all given $T^2$-invariant volume forms. This provides support for Donaldson's conjecture that Yau's theorem has an extension to symplectic four-manifolds with compatible but non-integrable almost complex structures.

The Calabi-Yau equation, symplectic forms and almost complex structures

We discuss a conjecture of Donaldson on a version of Yau's Theorem for symplectic forms with compatible almost complex structures and survey some recent progress on this problem. We also speculate on some future possible directions, and use a monotonicity formula for harmonic maps to obtain a new local estimate in the setting of Donaldson's conjecture.

Energy functionals and canonical Kahler metrics

Yau conjectured that a Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric if and only if it is stable in the sense of geometric invariant theory. There has been much progress on this conjecture by Tian, Donaldson and others. The Mabuchi energy functional plays a central role in these ideas. We study the E_k functionals introduced by X.X. Chen and G. Tian which generalize the Mabuchi energy. We show that if a Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric then the functional E_1 is bounded from below, and, modulo holomorphic vector fields, is proper. This answers affirmatively a question raised by Chen. We show in fact that E_1 is proper if and only if there exists a Kahler-Einstein metric, giving a new analytic criterion for the existence of this canonical metric, with possible implications for the study of stability. We also show that on a Fano Kahler-Einstein manifold all of the functionals E_k are bounded below on the space of metrics with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

The modified Kähler-Ricci flow and solitons

We investigate the Kähler-Ricci flow modified by a holomorphic vector field. We find equivalent analytic criteria for the convergence of the flow to a Kähler-Ricci soliton. In addition, we relate the asymptotic behavior of the scalar curvature along the flow to the lower boundedness of the modified Mabuchi energy.

The Kähler-Ricci flow and the $\bar\partial$ operator on vector fields

The limiting behavior of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow for manifolds with positive first Chern class is examined under certain stability conditions. First, it is shown that if the Mabuchi K-energy is bounded from below, then the scalar curvature converges uniformly to a constant. Second, it is shown that if the Mabuchi K-energy is bounded from below and if the lowest positive eigenvalue of the $\bar\partial^\dagger \bar\partial$ operator on smooth vector fields is bounded away from 0 along the flow, then the metrics converge exponentially fast in $C^\infty$ to a Kähler-Einstein metric.

Constructions of Kahler-Einstein metrics with negative scalar curvature

We show that on Kahler manifolds with negative first Chern class, the sequence of algebraic metrics introduced by H. Tsuji converges uniformly to the Kahler-Einstein metric. For algebraic surfaces of general type and orbifolds with isolated singularities, we prove a convergence result for a modified version of Tsuji's iterative construction.
