Constellation Design for Nonlinear Unified SWIPT Receiver Channels with Memory

Unified receivers (URs) have emerged as a promising architecture for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), since a common rectifying front-end enables information decoding (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) from the same rectified output. However, rectification is nonlinear due to the diode, while the capacitor introduces memory across symbols, making constellation design over the channel challenging. In this paper, we study constellation design for nonlinear UR-SWIPT channels in both memoryless and memory regimes. First, we propose a tractable unified rectification model that captures both (i) the nonlinear steady-state mapping and (ii) the asymmetric capacitor charging/discharging dynamics under transient operation. To isolate the impact of rectification with memory on ID, we study the information-based design. In this setting, we develop a state-adaptive policy with an algorithmic constellation design that accounts for the rectifier state and shapes the constellation in the observation domain. By approximating the rectifier state distribution, we derive a closed-form average symbol error rate (SER) expression and characterize the rate-reliability (R-R) tradeoff. We then seek constellations that minimize the SER under average transmit power and EH constraints. We address the resulting energy-constrained setting in the memoryless regime using an autoencoder-based framework that embeds the nonlinear rectification model as a differentiable channel block. Numerical results validate the proposed models, demonstrate the impact of memory on the R-R tradeoff, and show how learned constellations adapt to EH requirements in the rate-energy tradeoff.

Dual-Diode Unified SWIPT for High Data Rates with Adaptive Detection

Due to their low-complexity and energy-efficiency, unified simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (U-SWIPT) receivers are especially suitable for low-power Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Towards accurately modeling practical operating conditions, in this study, we provide a unified transient framework for a dual-diode U-SWIPT that jointly accounts for diode nonlinearity and capacitor-induced memory effects. The proposed model accurately describes the inherent time dependence of the rectifier, highlighting its fundamental impact on both energy harvesting (EH) and information decoding (ID) processes. Based on the provided memory-aware model, we design a low-complexity adaptive detector that learns the nonlinear state transition dynamics and performs decision-directed detection with linear complexity. The proposed detection scheme approaches maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) performance in memory-dominated regimes, while avoiding the exponential search required by classical sequence detection. Overall, these results demonstrate that properly exploiting rectifier memory provides a better tradeoff between data rate and reliability for U-SWIPT receivers.

On the Reliability of Estimation Bounds in Low-SNR Bistatic ISAC

This paper explores a bistatic Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) framework, where a base station transmits communication signal that serve both direct communication with a user and multi-target parameter estimation through reflections captured by a separate sensing receiver. We assume that the instantaneous knowledge of the transmit signal at the sensing receiver is not available, and the sensing receiver only has knowledge of the statistical properties of the received signal. Unlike prior research that focuses on power allocation or optimal beamforming design for ISAC, we emphasize the inadequacy of the Cram\'er-Rao Bound (and its variant) in low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) regimes, particularly in passive sensing scenarios. Due to severe path loss and other impairments, the received sensing SNR is often significantly lower than that of direct Line-of-Sight communication, making CRB-based performance evaluation unreliable. To address this, we adopt the Ziv-Zakai Bound (ZZB) for Angle of Arrival estimation, which provides a more meaningful lower bound on estimation error. We derive analytical expressions for the ZZB and the achievable ergodic communication rate as functions of SNR. Through numerical simulations, we analyze the pareto-front between communication and sensing performance, demonstrating why ZZB serves as a better metric in low sensing SNR ISAC where traditional CRB-based approaches fail.

Optimizing ISAC MIMO Systems with Reconfigurable Pixel Antennas

The integration of sensing and communication demands architectures that can flexibly exploit spatial and electromagnetic (EM) degrees of freedom (DoF). This paper proposes an Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) MIMO framework that uses Reconfigurable Pixel Antenna (RPixA), which introduces additional EM-domain DoF that are electronically controlled through binary antenna coder switch networks. We introduce a beamforming architecture combining this EM and digital precoding to jointly optimize Sensing and Communication. Based on full-wave simulation of pixel antenna, we formulate a non-convex joint optimization problem to maximize sensing rate under user-specific constraints on communication rate. We utilize an Alternating Optimization framework incorporating genetic algorithm for port states of Pixel antennas, and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) for digital beamforming. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed EM-aware design achieves considerably higher sensing rate compared to conventional arrays and enables considerable antenna reduction for equivalent ISAC performance. These findings highlight the potential of reconfigurable pixel antennas to realize efficient and scalable EM-aware ISAC systems for future 6G networks.

Full Duplex ISAC with Cluster Ray Targets: Parameter Estimation and Beamforming

This work studies a full-duplex integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) resolution framework for spatially distributed systems. Conventional high-resolution methods, such as MUSIC, fail to localize distributed targets because the signal subspace is full rank, even in the single-distributed-target setting. In an effort to resolve this, we propose a two-stage estimator, which successfully resolve multiple distributed targets and outperforms several baseline schemes without incurring any additional computational complexity. Our first-stage estimator uses the Fast Fourier transform to estimate the coarse spectrum, while in the second stage, we apply the Gauss-Newton method to fine-tune the angular estimates. Apart from this, we also propose an optimization framework for designing an adaptive beamformer capable of synthesizing both wide and directed beams to cover the full extent of the targets while also fulfilling data rate requirements of multiple users. The beamformer also meets the data-rate requirements of multiple users, maintaining quality of service. Simulation results demonstrate a threefold improvement in spread estimation under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions and a twofold improvement for low-spread targets.

On Estimation of Angles of Arrival in Monostatic ISAC Without Instantaneous Transmit CSI

This paper explores the fundamental limits of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) in a more realistic setting compared to previous literature when the Base Staion (BS) has only statistical CSI of the communication user rather than full CSI. We analyze a monostatic setting where the BS performs multi-target Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation while simultaneously communicating with one of the targets. We assume that the BS has statistical CSI about all AoAs, with less uncertainty in the AoA of the communication receiver. The communication receiver is assumed to have perfect CSI. Utilizing a Bayesian Cram\'er-Rao Bound (BCRB) framework to characterize the fundamental limits of sensing under minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria, we derive achievable BCRB-rate trade-off regions. Our approach introduces a number of transmission strategies that share power across sensing and communication beams over a coherence time. Our analysis reveals that beam allocation strategies leveraging the principal eigenvectors of the target-specific sensing matrices minimize individual AoA estimation errors, while strategies balancing sensing and communication directions optimize joint estimation performance at the cost of individual accuracy. We demonstrate that leveraging updated BCRB-based sensing information for the communication receiver, due to its lower channel uncertainty, enables significantly improved communication rates.

Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Circuit Modeling and Reflection Amplification Optimization

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute a promising emerging technology that enables wireless systems to control the propagation environment to enhance diverse communication objectives. To mitigate double-fading attenuation in RIS-aided links, the paradigm of active metamaterials capable of amplifying their incident wave has emerged. In this paper, capitalizing on the inherent negative-resistance region of tunnel diodes, we propose their integration into each RIS unit element to enable RISs with reflection amplification entirely in the analog domain. We derive novel realistic phase-amplitude relationships and power constraints specific to this model, addressing gaps in the existing literature where amplitude limits are often chosen arbitrarily. This characterization of our active RIS unit elements is incorporated into two novel optimization frameworks targeting the spectral efficiency maximization of RIS-assisted Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, which are solved via an one-step approach and an iterative Alternating Optimization (AO) method. The former approach is used to initialize the AO framework, enhancing both its performance and convergence. Our numerical investigations emphasize the importance of accurately modeling phase-amplitude dependencies, and provide key insights into the impact of RIS-induced noise as well as the trade-off between available power and the number of active elements.

In-Band Full-Duplex MIMO Systems for Simultaneous Communications and Sensing: Challenges, Methods, and Future Perspectives

In-band Full-Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems offer a significant opportunity for Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) due to their capability to realize simultaneous signal transmissions and receptions. This feature has been recently exploited to devise spectrum-efficient simultaneous information transmission and monostatic sensing operations, a line of research typically referred to as MIMO FD-ISAC. In this article, capitalizing on a recent FD MIMO architecture with reduced complexity analog cancellation, we present an FD-enabled framework for simultaneous communications and sensing using data signals. In contrast to communications applications, the framework's goal is not to mitigate self interference, since it includes reflections of the downlink data transmissions from targets in the FD node's vicinity, but to optimize the system parameters for the intended dual functionality. The unique characteristics and challenges of a generic MIMO FD-ISAC system are discussed along with a broad overview of state-of-the-art special cases, including numerical investigations. Several directions for future work on FD-enabled ISAC relevant to signal processing communities are also provided.

Integrated SWIPT Receiver with Memory Effects: Circuit Analysis and Information Detection

Wireless power transfer has been proposed as a key technology for the foreseen machine type networks. A main challenge in the research community lies in acquiring a simple yet accurate model to capture the energy harvesting performance. In this work, we focus on a half-wave rectifier and based on circuit analysis we provide the actual output of the circuit which accounts for the memory introduced by the capacitor. The provided expressions are also validated through circuit simulations on ADS. Then, the half-wave rectifier is used as an integrated simultaneous wireless information and power transfer receiver where the circuit's output is used for decoding information based on amplitude modulation. We investigate the bit error rate performance based on two detection schemes: (i) symbol-by-symbol maximum likelihood (ML); and (ii) ML sequence detection (MLSD). We show that the symbol period is critical due to the intersymbol interference induced by circuit. Our results reveal that MLSD is necessary towards improving the error probability and achieving higher data rates.

Multi-Target Two-way Integrated Sensing and Communications with Full Duplex MIMO Radios

In this paper, we propose a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Full-Duplex Integrated Sensing and Communication System consisting of multiple targets, a single downlink, and a single uplink user. We employed signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) as the performance metric for radar, downlink, and uplink communication. We use a communication-centric approach in which communication waveform is used for both communication and sensing of the environment. We develop a sensing algorithm capable of estimating the direction of arrival (DoA), range, and velocity of each target. We also propose a joint optimization framework for designing A/D transmit and receive beamformers to improve radar, downlink, and uplink SINRs while minimizing self-interference (SI) leakage. We also propose a null space projection (NSP) based approach to improve the uplink rate. Our simulation results, considering orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform, show accurate radar parameter estimation with improved downlink and uplink rate.

Full-Duplex Wireless for 6G: Progress Brings New Opportunities and Challenges

The use of in-band full-duplex (FD) enables nodes to simultaneously transmit and receive on the same frequency band, which challenges the traditional assumption in wireless network design. The full-duplex capability enhances spectral efficiency and decreases latency, which are two key drivers pushing the performance expectations of next-generation mobile networks. In less than ten years, in-band FD has advanced from being demonstrated in research labs to being implemented in standards, presenting new opportunities to utilize its foundational concepts. Some of the most significant opportunities include using FD to enable wireless networks to sense the physical environment, integrate sensing and communication applications, develop integrated access and backhaul solutions, and work with smart signal propagation environments powered by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. However, these new opportunities also come with new challenges for large-scale commercial deployment of FD technology, such as managing self-interference, combating cross-link interference in multi-cell networks, and coexistence of dynamic time division duplex, subband FD and FD networks.

Full Duplex Holographic MIMO for Near-Field Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper presents an in-band Full Duplex (FD) integrated sensing and communications system comprising a holographic Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) base station, which is capable to simultaneously communicate with multiple users in the downlink direction, while sensing targets being randomly distributed within its coverage area. Considering near-field wireless operation at THz frequencies, the FD node adopts dynamic metasurface antenna panels for both transmission and reception, which consist of massive numbers of sub-wavelength-spaced metamaterials, enabling reduced cost and power consumption analog precoding and combining. We devise an optimization framework for the FD node's reconfigurable parameters with the dual objective of maximizing the targets' parameters estimation accuracy and the downlink communication performance. Our simulation results verify the integrated sensing and communications capability of the proposed FD holographic MIMO system, showcasing the interplays among its various design parameters.

On Second Order Rate Regions for the Static Scalar Gaussian Broadcast Channel

This paper considers the single antenna, static Gaussian broadcast channel in the finite blocklength regime. Second order achievable and converse rate regions are presented. Both a global reliability requirement and per-user reliability requirements are considered. The two-user case is analyzed in detail, and generalizations to the $K$-user case are also discussed. The largest second order achievable region presented here requires both superposition and rate splitting in the code construction, as opposed to the (infinite blocklength, first order) capacity region which does not require rate splitting. Indeed, the finite blocklength penalty causes superposition alone to under-perform other coding techniques in some parts of the region. In the two-user case with per-user reliability requirements, the capacity achieving superposition coding order (with the codeword of the user with the smallest SNR as cloud center) does not necessarily gives the largest second order region. Instead, the message of the user with the smallest point-to-point second order capacity should be encoded in the cloud center in order to obtain the largest second order region for the proposed scheme.

Full Duplex Massive MIMO Architectures: Recent Advances, Applications, and Future Directions

The increasingly demanding objectives for next generation wireless communications have spurred recent research activities on multi-antenna transceiver hardware architectures and relevant intelligent communication schemes. Among them belong the Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) architectures, which offer the potential for simultaneous uplink and downlink operations in the entire frequency band. However, as the number of antenna elements increases, the interference signal leaking from the transmitter of the FD radio to its receiver becomes more severe. In this article, we present a unified FD massive MIMO architecture comprising analog and digital transmit and receive BeamForming (BF), as well as analog and digital SI cancellation, which can be jointly optimized for various performance objectives and complexity requirements. Performance evaluation results for applications of the proposed architecture to fully digital and hybrid analog and digital BF operations using recent algorithmic designs, as well as simultaneous communication of data and control signals are presented. It is shown that the proposed architecture, for both small and large numbers of antennas, enables improved spectral efficiency FD communications with fewer analog cancellation elements compared to various benchmark schemes. The article is concluded with a list of open challenges and research directions for future FD massive MIMO communication systems and their promising applications.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Millimeter Wave Full Duplex Hybrid Beamforming

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) has attracted substantial attraction in recent years for spectral efficiency improvement, enabling hardware and spectrum sharing for simultaneous sensing and signaling operations. In-band Full Duplex (FD) is being considered as a key enabling technology for ISAC applications due to its simultaneous transmission and reception capability. In this paper, we present an FD-based ISAC system operating at millimeter Wave (mmWave) frequencies, where a massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Base Station (BS) node employing hybrid Analog and Digital (A/D) beamforming is communicating with a DownLink (DL) multi-antenna user and the same waveform is utilized at the BS receiver for sensing the radar targets in its coverage environment. We develop a sensing algorithm that is capable of estimating Direction of Arrival (DoA), range, and relative velocity of the radar targets. A joint optimization framework for designing the A/D transmit and receive beamformers as well as the Self-Interference (SI) cancellation is presented with the objective to maximize the achievable DL rate and the accuracy of the radar target sensing performance. Our simulation results, considering fifth Generation (5G) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms, verify our approach's high precision in estimating DoA, range, and velocity of multiple radar targets, while maximizing the DL communication rate.

Joint Analog and Digital Transceiver Design for Wideband Full Duplex MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a wideband Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication system comprising of an FD MIMO node simultaneously communicating with two multi-antenna UpLink (UL) and DownLink (DL) nodes utilizing the same time and frequency resources. To suppress the strong Self-Interference (SI) signal due to simultaneous transmission and reception in FD MIMO systems, we propose a joint design of Analog and Digital (A/D) cancellation as well as transmit and receive beamforming capitalizing on baseband Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal modeling. Considering practical transmitter impairments, we present a multi-tap wideband analog canceller architecture whose number of taps does not scale with the number of transceiver antennas and multipath SI components. We also propose a novel adaptive digital cancellation based on truncated singular value decomposition that reduces the residual SI signal estimation parameters. To maximize the FD sum rate, a joint optimization framework is presented for A/D cancellation and digital beamforming. Finally, our extensive waveform simulation results demonstrate that the proposed wideband FD MIMO design exhibits higher SI cancellation capability with reduced complexity compared to existing cancellation techniques, resulting in improved achievable rate performance.

Recent applications of the Full Duplex (FD) technology focus on enabling simultaneous control communication and data transmission to reduce the control information exchange overhead, which impacts end-to-end latency and spectral efficiency. In this paper, we present a simultaneous direction estimation and data transmission scheme for millimeter Wave (mmWave) massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, enabled by a recent FD MIMO technology with reduced hardware complexity Self-Interference (SI) cancellation. We apply the proposed framework in the mmWave analog beam management problem, considering a base station equipped with a large transmit antenna array realizing downlink analog beamforming and few digitally controlled receive antenna elements used for uplink Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) estimation. A joint optimization framework for designing the DoA-assisted analog beamformer and the analog as well as digital SI cancellation is presented with the objective to maximize the achievable downlink rate. Our simulation results showcase that the proposed scheme outperforms its conventional half-duplex counterpart, yielding reduced DoA estimation error and superior downlink data rate.
