Simultaneous Data Communication and Channel Estimation in Multi-User Full Duplex MIMO Systems

In this paper, we study Simultaneous Communication of Data and Control (SCDC) information signals in Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless systems. In particular, considering an FD MIMO base station serving multiple single-antenna FD users, a novel multi-user communication scheme for simultaneous DownLink (DL) beamformed data transmission and UpLink (UL) pilot-assisted channel estimation is presented. Capitalizing on a recent FD MIMO hardware architecture with reduced complexity self-interference analog cancellation, we jointly design the base station's transmit and receive beamforming matrices as well as the settings for the multiple analog taps and the digital SI canceller with the objective to maximize the DL sum rate. Our simulation results showcase that the proposed approach outperforms its conventional half duplex counterpart with 50% reduction in hardware complexity compared to the latest FD-based SCDC schemes.

Full Duplex Hybrid A/D Beamforming with Reduced Complexity Multi-Tap Analog Cancellation

Although the hardware complexity of the analog self-interference canceller in full duplex Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) designs does not necessarily scale with the number of transceiver antennas, exploiting the benefits of analog cancellation in massive MIMO systems with hundreds of antenna elements is still quite impractical. Hybrid Analog and Digital (A/D) beamforming architectures have been lately considered as a candidate technology for realizing massive MIMO transceivers with very large number of antenna elements, but with much fewer numbers of Radio Frequency (RF) chains. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for full duplex hybrid A/D beamforming transceivers including multi-tap analog cancellation with reduced number of taps and simple multiplexers for efficient signal routing among the transceiver RF chains. Capitalizing on the proposed transceiver architecture, we present a joint design of analog cancellation and A/D beamforming with the objective to maximize the achievable full duplex rate performance. Representative millimeter wave simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture and algorithmic framework for enabling simultaneous uplink and downlink communications with reduced complexity analog self-interference cancellation.

Simultaneous Downlink Data Transmission and Uplink Channel Estimation with Reduced Complexity Full Duplex MIMO Radios

In this paper, we study Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radios for simultaneous data communication and control information exchange. Capitalizing on a recently proposed FD MIMO architecture combining digital transmit and receive beamforming with reduced complexity multi-tap analog Self-Interference (SI) cancellation, we propose a novel transmission scheme exploiting channel reciprocity for joint downlink beamformed information data communication and uplink channel estimation through training data transmission. We adopt a general model for pilot-assisted channel estimation and present a unified optimization framework for all involved FD MIMO design parameters. Our representative Monte Carlo simulation results for an example algorithmic solution for the beamformers as well as for the analog and digital SI cancellation demonstrate that the proposed FD-based joint communication and control scheme provides 1.4x the downlink rate of its half duplex counterpart. This performance improvement is achieved with 50% reduction in the hardware complexity for the analog canceller than conventional FD MIMO architectures with fully connected analog cancellation.

A Unified Beamforming and A/D Self-Interference Cancellation Design for Full Duplex MIMO Radios

In this paper, we focus on reduced complexity full duplex Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and present a joint design of digital transmit and receive beamforming with Analog and Digital (A/D) self-interference cancellation. We capitalize on a recently proposed multi-tap analog canceller architecture, whose number of taps does not scale with the number of transceiver antennas, and consider practical transmitter impairments for the full duplex operation. Particularly, transmitter IQ imbalance and nonlinear power amplification are assumed via relevant realistic models. Aiming at suppressing the residual linear and nonlinear self-interference signal below the noise floor, we propose a novel digital self-interference cancellation technique that is jointly designed with the configuration of the analog taps and digital beamformers. Differently from the state of the art, we design pilot-assisted estimation of all involved wireless channels. Our representative Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that our unified full duplex MIMO design exhibits higher self-interference cancellation capability with less analog taps compared to available techniques, which results in improved achievable rate and bit error performance.

A Comprehensive Self-interference Model for Single-antenna Full-duplex Communication Systems

Single-antenna full-duplex communication technology has the potential to substantially increase spectral efficiency. However, limited propagation domain cancellation of single-antenna system results in a higher impact of receiver chain nonlinearities on the residual self-interference (SI) signal. In this paper, we offer a comprehensive SI model for single-antenna full-duplex systems based on direct-conversion transceiver structure considering nonlinearities of all the transceiver radio frequency (RF) components, in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalances, phase noise effect, and receiver noise figure. To validate our model, we also propose a more appropriate digital SI cancellation approach considering receiver chain RF and baseband nonlinearities. The proposed technique employs orthogonalization of the design matrix using QR decomposition to alleviate the estimation and cancellation error. Finally, through circuit-level waveform simulation, the performance of the digital cancellation strategy is investigated, which achieves 20 dB more cancellation compared to existing methods.

On Erasure Broadcast Channels with Hard Deadlines

This paper considers packet scheduling over a broadcast channel with packet erasures to multiple receivers with different messages (multiple uni-cast) each with possibly different hard deadline constraints. A novel metric is proposed and evaluated: the global deadline outage probability, which gives the probability that the hard communication deadline is not met for at least one of the receivers. The cut-set upper bound is derived and a scheduling policy is proposed to determine which receiver's packets should be sent in each time slot. This policy is shown to be optimal among all scheduling policies, i.e., it achieves all boundary points of cut-set upper bounds when the transmitter knows the erasure patterns for all the receivers ahead of making the scheduling decision. An expression for the global deadline outage probability is obtained for two receivers and is plotted and interpreted for various system parameters. These plots are not Monte-Carlo simulations, and hence the obtained expression may be used in the design of future downlink broadcast networks. Future extensions to per-user deadline outage probabilities as well as to scenarios with causal knowledge of the channel states are briefly discussed.

ComSens: Exploiting Pilot Diversity for Pervasive Integration of Communication and Sensing in MIMO-TDD-Frameworks

In this paper, we propose a fully-integrated radar and communication system -- named ComSens. We utilize two different pilot sequences (one for uplink and one for downlink) with the condition that they must be uncorrelated to each other. Within such a framework, the signal received from end-user and the back-scattered signal from the desired objects have uncorrelated pilots. Thus, the base-station is able to distinguish data signal from user and back-scattered signal from object. We assume a time division duplex (TDD) framework. The pilot sequences are designed for MIMO channels. We evaluate channel MSE as a figure of merit for communication system. We also show that the designed pilots are uncorrelated for a range of time lags. Moreover, designed uplink pilot has negligible autocorrelation for a range of time lags leading to an impulse-like autocorrelation for radar sensing.

A Framework for Super-Resolution of Scalable Video via Sparse Reconstruction of Residual Frames

This paper introduces a framework for super-resolution of scalable video based on compressive sensing and sparse representation of residual frames in reconnaissance and surveillance applications. We exploit efficient compressive sampling and sparse reconstruction algorithms to super-resolve the video sequence with respect to different compression rates. We use the sparsity of residual information in residual frames as the key point in devising our framework. Moreover, a controlling factor as the compressibility threshold to control the complexity-performance trade-off is defined. Numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of the proposed framework in terms of the compression rate as well as the quality of reconstructed video sequence in terms of PSNR measure. The framework leads to a more efficient compression rate and higher video quality compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms considering performance-complexity trade-offs.

Optimizing Pilot Overhead for Ultra-Reliable Short-Packet Transmission

In this paper we optimize the pilot overhead for ultra-reliable short-packet transmission and investigate the dependence of this overhead on packet size and error probability. In particular, we consider a point-to-point communication in which one sensor sends messages to a central node, or base-station, over AWGN with Rayleigh fading channel. We formalize the optimization in terms of approximate achievable rates at a given block length, pilot length, and error probability. This leads to more accurate pilot overhead optimization. Simulation results show that it is important to take into account the packet size and the error probability when optimizing the pilot overhead.

Achievable rate regions and outer bounds for a multi-pair bi-directional relay network

In a bi-directional relay channel, a pair of nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has mostly considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with two terminal nodes (or end users) and one relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with one base station, multiple terminal nodes and one relay, all of which operate in half-duplex modes. We assume that each terminal node communicates with the base-station in a bi-directional fashion through the relay and do not place any restrictions on the channels between the users, relays and base-stations; that is, each node has a direct link with every other node. Our contributions are three-fold: 1) the introduction of four new temporal protocols which fully exploit the two-way nature of the data and outperform simple routing or multi-hop communication schemes by carefully combining network coding, random binning and user cooperation which exploit over-heard and own-message side information, 2) derivations of inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of the discrete-memoryless multi-pair two-way network, and 3) a numerical evaluation of the obtained achievable rate regions and outer bounds in Gaussian noise which illustrate the performance of the proposed protocols compared to simpler schemes, to each other, to the outer bounds, which highlight the relative gains achieved by network coding, random binning and compress-and-forward-type cooperation between terminal nodes.
