Embedded Lensing Time Delays, the Fermat Potential, and the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe Effect

We derive the Fermat potential for a spherically symmetric lens embedded in an FLRW cosmology and use it to investigate the late-time integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, i.e., secondary temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) caused by individual large scale clusters and voids. We present a simple analytical expression for the temperature fluctuation in the CMB across such a lens as a derivative of the lens' Fermat potential. This formalism is applicable to both linear and nonlinear density evolution scenarios, to arbitrarily large density contrasts, and to all open and closed background cosmologies. It is much simpler to use and makes the same predictions as conventional approaches. In this approach the total temperature fluctuation can be split into a time-delay part and an evolutionary part. Both parts must be included for cosmic structures that evolve and both can be equally important. We present very simple ISW models for cosmic voids and galaxy clusters to illustrate the ease of use of our formalism. We use the Fermat potentials of simple cosmic void models to compare predicted ISW effects with those recently extracted from WMAP and \emph{Planck} data by stacking large cosmic voids using the aperture photometry method. If voids in the local universe with large density contrasts are no longer evolving we find that the time delay contribution alone predicts values consistent with the measurements. However, we find that for voids still evolving linearly, the evolutionary contribution cancels a significant part of the time delay contribution and results in predicted signals that are much smaller than recently observed.

A Simple Gravitational Lens Model For Cosmic Voids

We present a simple gravitational lens model to illustrate the ease of using the embedded lensing theory when studying cosmic voids. It confirms the previously used repulsive lensing models for deep voids. We start by estimating magnitude fluctuations and weak lensing shears of background sources lensed by large voids. We find that sources behind large ($\sim$$90\,\rm Mpc$) and deep voids (density contrast about $-0.9$) can be magnified or demagnified with magnitude fluctuations of up to $\sim$$0.05\,\rm mag$ and that the weak-lensing shear can be up to the $\sim$$10^{-2}$ level in the outer regions of large voids. Smaller or shallower voids produce proportionally smaller effects. We investigate the "wiggling" of the primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies caused by intervening cosmic voids. The void-wiggling of primary CMB temperature gradients is of the opposite sign to that caused by galaxy clusters. Only extremely large and deep voids can produce wiggling amplitudes similar to galaxy clusters, $\sim$$\rm 15\,μK$ by a large void of radius $\sim$$4^\circ$ and central density contrast $-0.9$ at redshift 0.5 assuming a CMB background gradient of $\sim$$\rm10\,μK\, arcmin^{-1}$. The dipole signal is spread over the entire void area, and not concentrated at the lens' center as it is for clusters. Finally we use our model to simulate CMB sky maps lensed by large cosmic voids. Our embedded theory can easily be applied to more complicated void models and used to study gravitational lensing of the CMB, to probe dark-matter profiles, to reduce the lensing-induced systematics in supernova Hubble diagrams, as well as study the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect.

Coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2

Through the combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and the heat capacity measurements, we studied the effect of Ce doping in the newly discovered SrFBiS${2}$ system. It is found that Sr${0.5}$Ce${0.5}$FBiS${2}$ undergoes a second-order transition below $7.5 K, followed by a superconducting transition with the critical temperature Tc=2.8 K. Our transport, specific heat and DC-magnetization results suggest the presence of bulk ferromagneticcorrelation of Ce ion below 7.5 K that coexist with superconductivity when the temperature is further lowered below 2.8 K.

Rényi Entropy of Free Compact Boson on Torus

In this paper, we reconsider the single interval Rényi entropy of a free compact scalar on a torus. In this case, the contribution to the entropy could be decomposed into classical part and quantum part. The classical part includes the contribution from all the saddle points, while the quantum part is universal. After considering a different monodromy condition from the one in the literature, we re-evaluate the classical part of the Rényi entropy. Moreover, we expand the entropy in the low temperature limit and find the leading thermal correction term which is consistent with the universal behavior suggested in arXiv:1403.0578 [hep-th]. Furthermore we investigate the large interval behavior of the entanglement entropy and show that the universal relation between the entanglement entropy and thermal entropy holds in this case.

General SIC-Measurement Based Entanglement Detection

We study the quantum separability problem by using general symmetric informationally complete measurements and present separability criteria for both $d$-dimensional bipartite and multipartite systems. The criterion for bipartite quantum states are effective in detecting several well known classes of quantum states. For isotropic states, it becomes both necessary and sufficient. Furthermore, our criteria can be experimentally implemented and the criterion for two-qudit states requires less local measurements than the one based on mutually unbiased measurements.

Single Interval Rényi Entropy At Low Temperature

In this paper, we calculate the Rényi entropy of one single interval on a circle at finite temperature in 2D CFT. In the low temperature limit, we expand the thermal density matrix level by level in the vacuum Verma module, and calculate the first few leading terms in $e^{-π/TL}$ explicitly. On the other hand, we compute the same Rényi entropy holographically. After considering the dependence of the Rényi entropy on the temperature, we manage to fix the interval-independent constant terms in the classical part of holographic Rényi entropy. We furthermore extend the analysis in Xi Dong's paper to higher orders and find exact agreement between the results from field theory and bulk computations in the large central charge limit. Our work provides another piece of evidence to support holographic computation of Rényi entropy in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, even with thermal effect.

Fragmentation of a spin-1 mixture in a magnetic field

We study the ground state quantum fragmentation in a mixture of a polar condensate and a ferromagnetic condensate when subject to an external magnetic field. We pay more attentions to the polar condensate and find that it will be less fragile in the mixture when perturbed by the magnetic field. Both atom numbers and the number fluctuations in the spin-0 component will keep in a high magnitude of order of $N$ when the magnetization of the system is increased. The role of the ferromagnetic condensate is to provide a uniform and stable background which can delay the rapid shrink of the 0-component population and make it possible to capture the \textquotedblleft super-fragmentation \textquotedblright. Our method has potential applications in measuring the inter-species spin-coupling interaction through adjusting the magnetic field.

Imaging and spectroscopic observations of magnetic reconnection and chromospheric evaporation in a solar flare

Magnetic reconnection is believed to be the dominant energy release mechanism in solar flares. The standard flare model predicts both downward and upward outflow plasmas with speeds close to the coronal Alfvén speed. Yet, spectroscopic observations of such outflows, especially the downflows, are extremely rare. With observations of the newly launched Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), we report the detection of greatly redshifted ($\sim$125 km s$^{-1}$ along line of sight) Fe {\sc{xxi}} 1354.08Å emission line with a $\sim$100 km s$^{-1}$ nonthermal width at the reconnection site of a flare. The redshifted Fe {\sc{xxi}} feature coincides spatially with the loop-top X-Ray source observed by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). We interpret this large redshift as the signature of downward-moving reconnection outflow/hot retracting loops. Imaging observations from both IRIS and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) also reveal the eruption and reconnection processes. Fast downward-propagating blobs along these loops are also found from cool emission lines (e.g., Si {\sc{iv}}, O {\sc{iv}}, C {\sc{ii}}, Mg {\sc{ii}}) and images of AIA and IRIS. Furthermore, the entire Fe {\sc{xxi}} line is blueshifted by $\sim$260 km s$^{-1}$ at the loop footpoints, where the cool lines mentioned above all exhibit obvious redshift, a result that is consistent with the scenario of chromospheric evaporation induced by downward-propagating nonthermal electrons from the reconnection site.

Controllable spin-orbit coupling and its influence on the upper critical field in the chemically doped quasi-one-dimensional Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ superconductor

By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with doping, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se doping on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt doping but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterparts, distinct from the nearly constant value in the Se doped samples. Our findings therefore suggest that the upper critical field of this system can be modified in a tunable fashion by chemical doping on the Pd chains with elements of varying mass numbers. The spin-orbit coupling on the Pd sites, by inference, should play an important role in the observed superconductivity and on the large upper critical field beyond the Pauli pair-breaking field.

Direct Evidence of an Eruptive, Filament-Hosting Magnetic Flux Rope Leading to a Fast Solar Coronal Mass Ejection

Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) are believed to be at the heart of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). A well-known example is the prominence cavity in the low corona that sometimes makes up a three-part white-light (WL) CME upon its eruption. Such a system, which is usually observed in quiet-Sun regions, has long been suggested to be the manifestation of an MFR with relatively cool filament material collecting near its bottom. However, observational evidence of eruptive, filament-hosting MFR systems has been elusive for those originating in active regions. By utilizing multi-passband extreme-ultra-violet (EUV) observations from SDO/AIA, we present direct evidence of an eruptive MFR in the low corona that exhibits a hot envelope and a cooler core; the latter is likely the upper part of a filament that undergoes a partial eruption, which is later observed in the upper corona as the coiled kernel of a fast, WL CME. This MFR-like structure exists more than one hour prior to its eruption, and displays successive stages of dynamical evolution, in which both ideal and non-ideal physical processes may be involved. The timing of the MFR kinematics is found to be well correlated with the energy release of the associated long-duration C1.9 flare. We suggest that the long-duration flare is the result of prolonged energy release associated with the vertical current sheet induced by the erupting MFR.

Anisotropy in Inflation with Non-minimal Coupling

We study a new anisotropic inflation model, with an inflaton field nonminimally coupled with the gravity and a vector field. We find that the anisotropic attractor solution exists not only in the weak curvature coupling limit, but more interestingly in the strong curvature coupling limit as well. We show that in the strong curvature coupling limit, the contribution from the anisotropy is greatly suppressed.

Uncertainty relations based on mutually unbiased measurements

We derive uncertainty relation inequalities according to the mutually unbiased measurements. Based on the calculation of the index of coincidence of probability distribution given by $d+1$ MUMs on any density operator $ρ$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$, both state-dependent and state-independent forms of lower entropic bounds are given. Furthermore, we formulate uncertainty relations for MUMs in terms of Rényi and Tsallis entropies.

Entanglement detection using mutually unbiased measurements

We study the entanglement detection by using mutually unbiased measurements and provide a quantum separability criterion that can be experimentally implemented for arbitrary $d$-dimensional bipartite systems. We show that this criterion is more effective than the criterion based on mutually unbiased bases. For isotropic states our criterion becomes both necessary and sufficient.

The suppression of Curie temperature by Sr doping in diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (La1-xSrx)(Zn1-yMny)AsO

(La1-xSrx)(Zn1-yMny)AsO is a two dimensional diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor that has the advantage of decoupled charge and spin doping. The substitution of Sr2+ for La3+ and Mn2+ for Zn2+ into the parent semiconductor LaZnAsO introduces hole carriers and spins, respectively. This advantage enables us to investigate the influence of carrier doping on the ferromagnetic ordered state through the control of Sr concentrations in (La1-xSrx)(Zn0.9Mn0.1)AsO. 10 % Sr doping results in a ferromagnetic ordering below TC ~ 30 K. Increasing Sr concentration up to 30 % heavily suppresses the Curie temperature and saturation moments. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that no structural transition occurs for (La0.9Sr0.1)(Zn0.9Mn0.1)AsO below 300 K.

MuSR Investigation and Suppression of TC by overdoped Li in Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Li1+y(Zn1-xMnx)P

We use muon spin relaxation (muSR) to investigate the magnetic properties of a bulk form diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (DFS) Li1.15(Zn0.9Mn0.1)P with T_C ~ 22 K. MuSR results confirm the gradual development of ferromagnetic ordering below T_C with a nearly 100% magnetic ordered volume. Despite its low carrier density, the relation between static internal field and Curie temperature observed for Li(Zn,Mn)P is consistent with the trend found in (Ga,Mn)As and other bulk DFSs, indicating these systems share a common mechanism for the ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Li1+y(Zn1-xMnx)P has the advantage of decoupled carrier and spin doping, where Mn2+ substitution for Zn2+ introduces spins and Li+ off-stoichiometry provides carriers. This advantage enables us to investigate the influence of overdoped Li on the ferromagnetic ordered state. Overdoping Li suppresses both T_C and saturation moments for a certain amount of spins, which indicates that more carriers are detrimental to the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and that a delicate balance between charge and spin densities is required to achieve highest T_C.

Strong Subadditivity and Emergent Surface

In this paper, we introduce two bounds which we call the Upper Differential Entropy and the Lower Differential Entropy for an infinite family of intervals(strips) in quantum field theory. The two bounds are equal provided that the theory is translational invariant and the entanglement entropy varies smoothly with respect to the interval. When the theory has a holographic dual, strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy indicates that there is always an emergent surface whose gravitational entropy is exactly given by the bound.

The Optical, Ultraviolet, and X-ray Structure of the Quasar HE 0435-1223

Microlensing has proven an effective probe of the structure of the innermost regions of quasars, and an important test of accretion disk models. We present light curves of the lensed quasar HE 0435-1223 in the R band and in the ultraviolet, and consider them together with X-ray light curves in two energy bands that are presented in a companion paper. Using a Bayesian Monte Carlo method, we constrain the size of the accretion disk in the rest-frame near- and far-UV, and constrain for the first time the size of the X-ray emission regions in two X-ray energy bands. The R-band scale size of the accretion disk is about 10^15.23 cm (~23 r_g), slightly smaller than previous estimates, but larger than would be predicted from the quasar flux. In the UV, the source size is weakly constrained, with a strong prior dependence. The UV to R-band size ratio is consistent with the thin disk model prediction, with large error bars. In soft and hard X-rays, the source size is smaller than ~10^14.8 cm (~10 r_g) at 95% confidence. We do not find evidence of structure in the X-ray emission region, as the most likely value for the ratio of the hard X-ray size to the soft X-ray size is unity. Finally, we find that the most likely value for the mean mass of stars in the lens galaxy is ~0.3 M_sun, consistent with other studies.

Holographic Rényi entropy for CFT with $W$ symmetry

In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals on complex plane with small cross ratio $x$ for conformal field theory with $W$ symmetry in the ground state, which could be dual to a higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity. We focus on the cases of $W_3$ and $W_4$ symmetries. In order to see the nontrivial contributions from the $W$ fields, we calculate the Rényi entropy in the expansion of $x$ to order $x^8$ in both the gravity and the CFT sides. In the gravity side the classical contributions to the entanglement entropy is still given by the Ryu-Takayanagi area formula under the reasonable assumption, while the 1-loop quantum corrections have to take into account of the contributions not only from massless gravitons, but also from massless higher spin fields. In the CFT side we still use the operator product expansion of twist operators in the small interval limit, but now we need to consider the quasiprimary fields constructed from $W$ fields, besides the ones from Virasoro Verma module. In the large central charge limit, we obtain the classical, 1-loop, 2-loop, and 3-loop parts of the Rényi entropy. The classical and 1-loop results in the gravity and the CFT sides are in exact match. This confirms the higher spin gravity/CFT correspondence, and also supports the holographic computation of Rényi entanglement entropy, including the quantum correction, in both the AdS$_3$ gravity and the higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity.
