Impurity-induced bound states as a signature of pairing symmetry in multiband superconducting CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

Multiband superconductivity with dominant two-gap features are recently proposed to challenge the earlier accepted nodal $d$-wave pairing in the first unconventional superconductor CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. Here we obtain multiband Fermi-surface topology of CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ via first-principles calculations, and study the problem within an effective two hybridization band model including detailed band-structure. Within T-matrix approximation, our calculations reveal that different pairing candidates could yield qualitatively distinct features characterised by impurity-induced bound states. Except for the nodeless $s^{\pm}$-wave, both loop-nodal $s$-wave and $d$-wave pairings can give rise to intra-gap impurity bound states. In particular, the intra-gap states for the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave and loop-nodal $s$-wave are distinguishable and locate either near or far away from the Fermi energy, respectively. These features can be readily verified by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and provide an unambiguous justification for the ongoing debate about the superconducting gap symmetry of CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ at ambient pressure.

Two Birds with One Stone: Transforming and Generating Facial Images with Iterative GAN

Generating high fidelity identity-preserving faces with different facial attributes has a wide range of applications. Although a number of generative models have been developed to tackle this problem, there is still much room for further improvement. In paticular, the current solutions usually ignore the perceptual information of images, which we argue that it benefits the output of a high-quality image while preserving the identity information, especially in facial attributes learning area.To this end, we propose to train GAN iteratively via regularizing the min-max process with an integrated loss, which includes not only the per-pixel loss but also the perceptual loss. In contrast to the existing methods only deal with either image generation or transformation, our proposed iterative architecture can achieve both of them. Experiments on the multi-label facial dataset CelebA demonstrate that the proposed model has excellent performance on recognizing multiple attributes, generating a high-quality image, and transforming image with controllable attributes.

Locating All Real Solutions of Power Flow Equations: A Convex Optimization Based Method

This paper proposes a convex optimization based method that either locates all real roots of a set of power flow equations or declares no real solution exists in the given area. In the proposed method, solving the power flow equations is reformulated as a global optimization problem (GPF for short) that minimizes the sum of slack variables. All the global minima of GPF with a zero objective value have a one-to-one correspondence to the real roots of power flow equations. By solving a relaxed version of GPF over a hypercube, if the optimal value is strictly positive, there is no solution in this area and the hypercube is discarded. Otherwise the hypercube is further divided into smaller ones. This procedure repeats recursively until all the real roots are located in small enough hypercubes through the successive refinement of the feasible region embedded in a bisection paradigm. This method is desired in a number of power system security assessment applications, for instance, the transient stability analysis as well as voltage stability analysis, where the closest unstable equilibrium and all Type-I unstable equilibrium is required, respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by analyzing several test systems.

Distilling Knowledge Using Parallel Data for Far-field Speech Recognition

In order to improve the performance for far-field speech recognition, this paper proposes to distill knowledge from the close-talking model to the far-field model using parallel data. The close-talking model is called the teacher model. The far-field model is called the student model. The student model is trained to imitate the output distributions of the teacher model. This constraint can be realized by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the output distribution of the student model and the teacher model. Experimental results on AMI corpus show that the best student model achieves up to 4.7% absolute word error rate (WER) reduction when compared with the conventionally-trained baseline models.

Simultaneous Modeling of Multiple Complications for Risk Profiling in Diabetes Care

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that often results in multiple complications. Risk prediction and profiling of T2DM complications is critical for healthcare professionals to design personalized treatment plans for patients in diabetes care for improved outcomes. In this paper, we study the risk of developing complications after the initial T2DM diagnosis from longitudinal patient records. We propose a novel multi-task learning approach to simultaneously model multiple complications where each task corresponds to the risk modeling of one complication. Specifically, the proposed method strategically captures the relationships (1) between the risks of multiple T2DM complications, (2) between the different risk factors, and (3) between the risk factor selection patterns. The method uses coefficient shrinkage to identify an informative subset of risk factors from high-dimensional data, and uses a hierarchical Bayesian framework to allow domain knowledge to be incorporated as priors. The proposed method is favorable for healthcare applications because in additional to improved prediction performance, relationships among the different risks and risk factors are also identified. Extensive experimental results on a large electronic medical claims database show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art models by a significant margin. Furthermore, we show that the risk associations learned and the risk factors identified lead to meaningful clinical insights.

Automatic thread painting generation

ThreadTone is an NPR representation of an input image by half-toning using threads on a circle. Current approaches to create ThreadTone paintings greedily draw the chords on the circle. We introduce the concept of chord space, and design a new algorithm to improve the quality of the thread painting. We use an optimization process that estimates the fitness of every chord in the chord space, and an error-diffusion based sampling process that selects a moderate number of chords to produce the output painting. We used an image similarity measure to evaluate the quality of our thread painting and also conducted a user study. Our approach can produce high quality results on portraits, sketches as well as cartoon pictures.

ILAPF: Incremental Learning Assisted Particle Filtering

This paper is concerned with dynamic system state estimation based on a series of noisy measurement with the presence of outliers. An incremental learning assisted particle filtering (ILAPF) method is presented, which can learn the value range of outliers incrementally during the process of particle filtering. The learned range of outliers is then used to improve subsequent filtering of the future state. Convergence of the outlier range estimation procedure is indicated by extensive empirical simulations using a set of differing outlier distribution models. The validity of the ILAPF algorithm is evaluated by illustrative simulations, and the result shows that ILAPF is more accurate and faster than a recently published state-ofthe-art robust particle filter. It also shows that the incremental learning property of the ILAPF algorithm provides an efficient way to implement transfer learning among related state filtering tasks.

Gapless Spin Excitations in the Field-Induced Quantum Spin Liquid Phase of alpha-RuCl3

$α$-RuCl$_3$ is a leading candidate material for theobservation of physics related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). By combined susceptibility, specific-heat, and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements, we demonstrate that $α$-RuCl$_3$ undergoes a quantum phase transition to a QSL in a magnetic field of 7.5 T applied in the $ab$ plane. We show further that this high-field QSL phase has gapless spin excitations over a field range up to 16 T. This highly unconventional result, unknown in either Heisenberg or Kitaev magnets, offers insight essential to establishing the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

An Efficient Randomized Algorithm for Rumor Blocking in Online Social Networks

Social networks allow rapid spread of ideas and innovations while the negative information can also propagate widely. When the cascades with different opinions reaching the same user, the cascade arriving first is the most likely to be taken by the user. Therefore, once misinformation or rumor is detected, a natural containment method is to introduce a positive cascade competing against the rumor. Given a budget $k$, the rumor blocking problem asks for $k$ seed users to trigger the spread of the positive cascade such that the number of the users who are not influenced by rumor can be maximized. The prior works have shown that the rumor blocking problem can be approximated within a factor of $(1-1/e-δ)$ by a classic greedy algorithm combined with Monte Carlo simulation with the running time of $O(\frac{k^3mn\ln n}{δ^2})$, where $n$ and $m$ are the number of users and edges, respectively. Unfortunately, the Monte-Carlo-simulation-based methods are extremely time consuming and the existing algorithms either trade performance guarantees for practical efficiency or vice versa. In this paper, we present a randomized algorithm which runs in $O(\frac{km\ln n}{δ^2})$ expected time and provides a $(1-1/e-δ)$-approximation with a high probability. The experimentally results on both the real-world and synthetic social networks have shown that the proposed randomized rumor blocking algorithm is much more efficient than the state-of-the-art method and it is able to find the seed nodes which are effective in limiting the spread of rumor.

A Sequential Scheme for Large Scale Bayesian Multiple Testing

The problem of large scale multiple testing arises in many contexts, including testing for pairwise interaction among large numbers of neurons. With advances in technologies, it has become common to record from hundreds of neurons simultaneously, and this number is growing quickly, so that the number of pairwise tests can be very large. It is important to control the rate at which false positives occur. In addition, there is sometimes information that affects the probability of a positive result for any given pair. In the case of neurons, they are more likely to have correlated activity when they are close together, and when they respond similarly to various stimuli. Recently a method was developed to control false positives when covariate information, such as distances between pairs of neurons, is available. This method, however, relies on computationally-intensive Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Here we develop an alternative, based on Sequential Monte Carlo, which scales well with the size of the dataset. This scheme considers data items sequentially, with relevant probabilities being updated at each step. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm delivers results as accurately as the previous MCMC method with only a single pass through the data. We illustrate the method by using it to analyze neural recordings from extrastriate cortex in a macaque monkey.

Spin-Orbit Misalignment of Merging Black-Hole Binaries with Tertiary Companions

We study the effect of external companion on the orbital and spin evolution of merging black-hole (BH) binaries. An sufficiently close by and inclined companion can excite Lidov-Kozai (LK) eccentricity oscillations in the binary, thereby shortening its merger time. During such LK-enhanced orbital decay, the spin axis of the BH generally exhibits chaotic evolution, leading to a wide range ($0^\circ$-$180^\circ$) of final spin-orbit misalignment angle from an initially aligned configuration. For systems that do not experience eccentricity excitation, only modest ($\lesssim 20^\circ$) spin-orbit misalignment can be produced, and we derive an analytic expression for the final misalignment using the principle of adiabatic invariance. The spin-orbit misalignment directly impacts the gravitational waveform, and can be used to constrain the formation scenarios of BH binaries and dynamical influences of external companions.

iTrace: An Implicit Trust Inference Method for Trust-aware Collaborative Filtering

The growth of Internet commerce has stimulated the use of collaborative filtering (CF) algorithms as recommender systems. A collaborative filtering (CF) algorithm recommends items of interest to the target user by leveraging the votes given by other similar users. In a standard CF framework, it is assumed that the credibility of every voting user is exactly the same with respect to the target user. This assumption is not satisfied and thus may lead to misleading recommendations in many practical applications. A natural countermeasure is to design a trust-aware CF (TaCF) algorithm, which can take account of the difference in the credibilities of the voting users when performing CF. To this end, this paper presents a trust inference approach, which can predict the implicit trust of the target user on every voting user from a sparse explicit trust matrix. Then an improved CF algorithm termed iTrace is proposed, which takes advantage of both the explicit and the predicted implicit trust to provide recommendations with the CF framework. An empirical evaluation on a public dataset demonstrates that the proposed algorithm provides a significant improvement in recommendation quality in terms of mean absolute error (MAE).

Online Multi-Object Tracking Using CNN-based Single Object Tracker with Spatial-Temporal Attention Mechanism

In this paper, we propose a CNN-based framework for online MOT. This framework utilizes the merits of single object trackers in adapting appearance models and searching for target in the next frame. Simply applying single object tracker for MOT will encounter the problem in computational efficiency and drifted results caused by occlusion. Our framework achieves computational efficiency by sharing features and using ROI-Pooling to obtain individual features for each target. Some online learned target-specific CNN layers are used for adapting the appearance model for each target. In the framework, we introduce spatial-temporal attention mechanism (STAM) to handle the drift caused by occlusion and interaction among targets. The visibility map of the target is learned and used for inferring the spatial attention map. The spatial attention map is then applied to weight the features. Besides, the occlusion status can be estimated from the visibility map, which controls the online updating process via weighted loss on training samples with different occlusion statuses in different frames. It can be considered as temporal attention mechanism. The proposed algorithm achieves 34.3% and 46.0% in MOTA on challenging MOT15 and MOT16 benchmark dataset respectively.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation based on Random Subspace EDA: Application to Extrasolar Planet Detection

This paper addresses maximum likelihood (ML) estimation based model fitting in the context of extrasolar planet detection. This problem is featured by the following properties: 1) the candidate models under consideration are highly nonlinear; 2) the likelihood surface has a huge number of peaks; 3) the parameter space ranges in size from a few to dozens of dimensions. These properties make the ML search a very challenging problem, as it lacks any analytical or gradient based searching solution to explore the parameter space. A population based searching method, called estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA), is adopted to explore the model parameter space starting from a batch of random locations. EDA is featured by its ability to reveal and utilize problem structures. This property is desirable for characterizing the detections. However, it is well recognized that EDAs can not scale well to large scale problems, as it consists of iterative random sampling and model fitting procedures, which results in the well-known dilemma curse of dimensionality. A novel mechanism to perform EDAs in interactive random subspaces spanned by correlated variables is proposed and the hope is to alleviate the curse of dimensionality for EDAs by performing the operations of sampling and model fitting in lower dimensional subspaces. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified via both benchmark numerical studies and real data analysis.

A generic construction of quantum-oblivious-key-transfer-based private query with ideal database security and zero failure

Higher security and lower failure probability have always been people's pursuits in quantum-oblivious-key-transfer-based private query (QOKT-PQ) protocols since Jacobi \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. A 83, 022301 (2011)] proposed the first protocol of this kind. However, higher database security generally has to be obtained at the cost of a higher failure probability, and vice versa. Recently, based on a round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution protocol, Liu \emph{et al}. [Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron.58, 100301 (2015)] presented a private query protocol (RRDPS-PQ protocol) utilizing ideal single-photon signal which realizes both ideal database security and zero failure probability. However, ideal single-photon source is not available today, and for large database the required pulse train is too long to implement. Here, we reexamine the security of RRDPS-PQ protocol under imperfect source and present an improved protocol using a special "low-shift and addition" (LSA) technique, which not only can be used to query from large database but also retains the features of "ideal database security" and "zero-failure" even under weak coherent source. Finally, we generalize the LSA technique and establish a generic QOKT-PQ model in which both "ideal database security" and "zero failure" are achieved via acceptable communications.

Merging Compact Binaries in Hierarchical Triple Systems: Resonant Excitation of Binary Eccentricity

We study the secular dynamics of compact binaries (consisting of white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes) with tertiary companions in hierarchical triple systems. As the inner binary (with initially negligible eccentricity) undergoes orbital decay due to gravitational radiation, its eccentricity can be excited by gravitational forcing from the tertiary. This excitation occurs when the triple system passes through an "apsidal precession resonance", when the precession rate of the inner binary, driven by the gravitational perturbation of the external companion and general relativity, matches the precession rate of the outer binary. The eccentricity excitation requires the outer companion to be on an eccentric orbit, with the mutual inclination between the inner and outer orbits less than $\sim 40^\circ$. Gravitational wave (GW) signals from the inner binary can be significantly modified as the system evolves through the apsidal precession resonance. For some system parameters (e.g., a white dwarf binary with a brown dwarf tertiary), the resonance can happen when the binary emits GWs in the $10^{-4}-10^{-1}$~Hz range (the sensitivity band of LISA).

Sculpting the Vertex: Manipulating the Configuration Space Topography and Topology of Origami Vertices to Design Mechanical Robustness

The geometric, aesthetic, and mathematical elegance of origami is being recognized as a powerful pathway to self-assembly of micro and nano-scale machines with programmable mechanical properties. The typical approach to designing the mechanical response of an ideal origami machine is to include mechanisms where mechanical constraints transform applied forces into a desired motion along a narrow set of degrees of freedom. In fact, to date, most design approaches focus on building up complex mechanisms from simple ones in ways that preserve each individual mechanism's degree of freedom (DOF), with examples ranging from simple robotic arms to homogenous arrays of identical vertices, such as the well-known Miura-ori. However, such approaches typically require tight fabrication tolerances, and often suffer from parasitic compliance. In this work, we demonstrate a technique in which high-degree-of-freedom mechanisms associated with single vertices are heterogeneously combined so that the coupled phase spaces of neighboring vertices are pared down to a controlled range of motions. This approach has the advantage that it produces mechanisms that retain the DOF at each vertex, are robust against fabrication tolerances and parasitic compliance, but nevertheless effectively constrain the range of motion of the entire machine. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by mapping out the configuration space for the modified Miura-ori vertex of degree 6, and show that when strung together, their combined configuration spaces create mechanisms that isolate deformations, constrain the configuration topology of neighboring vertices, or lead to sequential bistable folding throughout the entire origami sheet.
