An Unsupervised Learning Method for Radio Interferometry Deconvolution

Given the incomplete sampling of spatial frequencies by radio interferometers, achieving precise restoration of astrophysical information remains challenging. To address this ill-posed problem, compressive sensing(CS) provides a robust framework for stable and unique recovery of sky brightness distributions in noisy environments, contingent upon satisfying specific conditions. We explore the applicability of CS theory and find that for radio interferometric telescopes, the conditions can be simplified to sparse representation. {Building on this insight, we develop a deep dictionary (realized through a convolutional neural network), which is designed to be multi-resolution and overcomplete, to achieve sparse representation and integrate it within the CS framework. The resulting method is a novel, fully interpretable unsupervised learning approach that combines} the mathematical rigor of CS with the expressive power of deep neural networks, effectively bridging the gap between deep learning and classical dictionary methods. {During the deconvolution process, the model image and the deep dictionary are updated alternatively.} This approach enables efficient and accurate recovery of extended sources with complex morphologies from noisy measurements. Comparative analyses with state-of-the-art algorithms demonstrate the outstanding performance of our method, i.e., achieving a dynamic range (DR) nearly 45 to 100 times higher than that of multiscale CLEAN (MS-CLEAN).

OV-MER: Towards Open-Vocabulary Multimodal Emotion Recognition

Multimodal Emotion Recognition (MER) is a critical research area that seeks to decode human emotions from diverse data modalities. However, existing machine learning methods predominantly rely on predefined emotion taxonomies, which fail to capture the inherent complexity, subtlety, and multi-appraisal nature of human emotional experiences, as demonstrated by studies in psychology and cognitive science. To overcome this limitation, we advocate for introducing the concept of open vocabulary into MER. This paradigm shift aims to enable models to predict emotions beyond a fixed label space, accommodating a flexible set of categories to better reflect the nuanced spectrum of human emotions. To achieve this, we propose a novel paradigm: Open-Vocabulary MER (OV-MER), which enables emotion prediction without being confined to predefined spaces. However, constructing a dataset that encompasses the full range of emotions for OV-MER is practically infeasible; hence, we present a comprehensive solution including a newly curated database, novel evaluation metrics, and a preliminary benchmark. By advancing MER from basic emotions to more nuanced and diverse emotional states, we hope this work can inspire the next generation of MER, enhancing its generalizability and applicability in real-world scenarios. Code and dataset are available at: https://github.com/zeroQiaoba/AffectGPT.

AffectGPT: A New Dataset, Model, and Benchmark for Emotion Understanding with Multimodal Large Language Models

The emergence of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) advances multimodal emotion recognition (MER) to the next level, from naive discriminative tasks to complex emotion understanding with advanced video understanding abilities and natural language description. However, the current community suffers from a lack of large-scale datasets with intensive, descriptive emotion annotations, as well as a multimodal-centric framework to maximize the potential of MLLMs for emotion understanding. To address this, we establish a new benchmark for MLLM-based emotion understanding with a novel dataset (MER-Caption) and a new model (AffectGPT). Utilizing our model-based crowd-sourcing data collection strategy, we construct the largest descriptive emotion dataset to date (by far), featuring over 2K fine-grained emotion categories across 115K samples. We also introduce the AffectGPT model, designed with pre-fusion operations to enhance multimodal integration. Finally, we present MER-UniBench, a unified benchmark with evaluation metrics tailored for typical MER tasks and the free-form, natural language output style of MLLMs. Extensive experimental results show AffectGPT's robust performance across various MER tasks. We have released both the code and the dataset to advance research and development in emotion understanding: https://github.com/zeroQiaoba/AffectGPT.

MER 2025: When Affective Computing Meets Large Language Models

MER2025 is the third year of our MER series of challenges, aiming to bring together researchers in the affective computing community to explore emerging trends and future directions in the field. Previously, MER2023 focused on multi-label learning, noise robustness, and semi-supervised learning, while MER2024 introduced a new track dedicated to open-vocabulary emotion recognition. This year, MER2025 centers on the theme "When Affective Computing Meets Large Language Models (LLMs)".We aim to shift the paradigm from traditional categorical frameworks reliant on predefined emotion taxonomies to LLM-driven generative methods, offering innovative solutions for more accurate and reliable emotion understanding. The challenge features four tracks: MER-SEMI focuses on fixed categorical emotion recognition enhanced by semi-supervised learning; MER-FG explores fine-grained emotions, expanding recognition from basic to nuanced emotional states; MER-DES incorporates multimodal cues (beyond emotion words) into predictions to enhance model interpretability; MER-PR investigates whether emotion prediction results can improve personality recognition performance. For the first three tracks, baseline code is available at MERTools, and datasets can be accessed via Hugging Face. For the last track, the dataset and baseline code are available on GitHub.

New results on the global solvability and blow-up for a class of weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equations

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a class of weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equations in nonhomogeneous Besov spaces. First, we prove that the Cauchy problem admits a unique global strong solution in Besov spaces with proper condition on the dissipation parameter $λ>0$. The novel ingredients in the proof lies in transforming the equations into a class of damped Camassa-Holm equations, and performing a non-standard iterative method. It is shown that our result holds for the damped equations with more general time-dependent parameters, which improves the existed results from Sobolev spaces to Besov spaces without assuming any sign condition on the initial data. Second, we derive two kinds of blow-up criteria in suitable Sobolev spaces, which in some sense inform us how the dissipation parameter $λ$ influences the singularity formation of strong solutions.

Context-Aware Weakly Supervised Image Manipulation Localization with SAM Refinement

Malicious image manipulation poses societal risks, increasing the importance of effective image manipulation detection methods. Recent approaches in image manipulation detection have largely been driven by fully supervised approaches, which require labor-intensive pixel-level annotations. Thus, it is essential to explore weakly supervised image manipulation localization methods that only require image-level binary labels for training. However, existing weakly supervised image manipulation methods overlook the importance of edge information for accurate localization, leading to suboptimal localization performance. To address this, we propose a Context-Aware Boundary Localization (CABL) module to aggregate boundary features and learn context-inconsistency for localizing manipulated areas. Furthermore, by leveraging Class Activation Mapping (CAM) and Segment Anything Model (SAM), we introduce the CAM-Guided SAM Refinement (CGSR) module to generate more accurate manipulation localization maps. By integrating two modules, we present a novel weakly supervised framework based on a dual-branch Transformer-CNN architecture. Our method achieves outstanding localization performance across multiple datasets.

Leaky surface plasmon-based wakefield acceleration in nanostructured carbon nanotubes

Metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can provide ultra-dense, homogeneous plasma capable of sustaining resonant plasma waves-known as plasmons-with ultra-high field amplitudes. These waves can be efficiently driven by either high-intensity laser pulses or high-density relativistic charged particle beams. In this study, we use numerical simulations to propose that electrons and positrons can be accelerated in wakefields generated by the leaky electromagnetic field of surface plasmons. These plasmons are excited when a high-intensity optical laser pulse propagates paraxially through a cylindrical vacuum channel structured within a CNT forest. The wakefield is stably sustained by a non-evanescent longitudinal field with $\si{TV/m}$-level amplitudes. This mechanism differs significantly from the plasma wakefield generation in uniform gaseous plasmas. Traveling at the speed of light in vacuum, with phase-matched focusing fields, the wakefield acceleration is highly efficient for both electron and positron beams. We also examine two potential electron injection mechanisms: edge injection and self-injection. Both mechanisms are feasible with current laser facilities, paving the way for experimental realization. Beyond presenting a promising pathway toward ultra-compact, high-energy solid-state plasma particle accelerators, this work also expands the potential of high-energy plasmonics.

Feature-Based Dual Visual Feature Extraction Model for Compound Multimodal Emotion Recognition

This article presents our results for the eighth Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition.Multimodal emotion recognition (ER) has important applications in affective computing and human-computer interaction. However, in the real world, compound emotion recognition faces greater issues of uncertainty and modal conflicts. For the Compound Expression (CE) Recognition Challenge, this paper proposes a multimodal emotion recognition method that fuses the features of Vision Transformer (ViT) and Residual Network (ResNet). We conducted experiments on the C-EXPR-DB and MELD datasets. The results show that in scenarios with complex visual and audio cues (such as C-EXPR-DB), the model that fuses the features of ViT and ResNet exhibits superior performance. Our code are avalible on https://github.com/MyGitHub-ax/8th_ABAW

FAST Ultra-Deep Survey (FUDS): the star formation histories of FUDS0 galaxies

We present the ultraviolet, optical and infrared counterparts of 128 galaxies detected in neutral hydrogen (HI) in the FAST Ultra-Deep Survey (FUDS) field 0 (FUDS0). HI mass upper limits are also calculated for 134 non-detections in the field. Stellar masses ($M_*$), star formation rates (SFRs) and star formation histories are computed by fitting spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using ProSpect. The results show that HI-selected galaxies prefer recent long-lasting, but mild star formation activity, while HI non-detections have earlier and more intense star formation activity. Based on their distribution on the SFR versus $M_*$ diagram, the typical evolution of HI-selected galaxies follows three distinct stages: (i) Early stage: the total SFR increases, though the specific SFR (sSFR) decreases from 10$^{-8}$ to 10$^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$; (ii) Mass accumulation stage: the SFR is steady, and stellar mass increase linearly with time; (iii) Quenching stage: star formation activity quenches on a rapid timescale and at constant stellar mass. 37 non-detections are located on star-forming main sequence, but are not detected in HI due to low sensitivity close to field edges or close to strong radio frequency interference. Comparisons with the existing optical, optically-selected HI, and HI catalogs show a good agreement with respect to measured $M_*$ and SFR, with minor discrepancies due to selection effects. The ongoing full FUDS survey will help us better explore the evolutionary stages of HI galaxies through a larger sample.

Improving LLM-based Document-level Machine Translation with Multi-Knowledge Fusion

Recent studies in prompting large language model (LLM) for document-level machine translation (DMT) primarily focus on the inter-sentence context by flatting the source document into a long sequence. This approach relies solely on the sequence of sentences within the document. However, the complexity of document-level sequences is greater than that of shorter sentence-level sequences, which may limit LLM's ability in DMT when only this single-source knowledge is used. In this paper, we propose an enhanced approach by incorporating multiple sources of knowledge, including both the document summarization and entity translation, to enhance the performance of LLM-based DMT. Given a source document, we first obtain its summarization and translation of entities via LLM as the additional knowledge. We then utilize LLMs to generate two translations of the source document by fusing these two single knowledge sources, respectively. Finally, recognizing that different sources of knowledge may aid or hinder the translation of different sentences, we refine and rank the translations by leveraging a multi-knowledge fusion strategy to ensure the best results. Experimental results in eight document-level translation tasks show that our approach achieves an average improvement of 0.8, 0.6, and 0.4 COMET scores over the baseline without extra knowledge for LLaMA3-8B-Instruct, Mistral-Nemo-Instruct, and GPT-4o-mini, respectively.

Enhanced MVA of Polarized Proton Beams via PW Laser-Driven Plasma Bubble

The significance of laser-driven polarized beam acceleration has been increasingly recognized in recent years. We propose an efficient method for generating polarized proton beams from a pre-polarized hydrogen halide gas jet, utilizing magnetic vortex acceleration enhanced by a laser-driven plasma bubble. When a petawatt laser pulse passes through a pre-polarized gas jet, a bubble-like ultra-nonlinear plasma wave is formed. As part of the wave particles, background protons are swept by the acceleration field of the bubble and oscillate significantly along the laser propagation axis. Some of the pre-accelerated protons in the plasma wave are trapped by the acceleration field at the rear side of the target. This acceleration field is intensified by the transverse expansion of the laser-driven magnetic vortex, resulting in energetic polarized proton beams. The spin of energetic protons is determined by their precession within the electromagnetic field, as described by the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation in analytical models and particle-in-cell simulations. Multidimensional simulations reveal that monoenergetic proton beams with hundreds of MeV in energy, a beam charge of hundreds of pC, and a beam polarization of tens of percent can be produced at laser powers of several petawatts. Laser-driven polarized proton beams offer promising potential for application in polarized beam colliders, where they can be utilized to investigate particle interactions and to explore the properties of matter under unique conditions.

Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates with Attractive Self-Interaction on a Möbius Strip

We study the matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped on a Möbius strip (MS), based on the respective Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with the mean-field theory. In the linear regime, vortex states are characterized by quantum numbers, $n$ and $m$, corresponding to the transverse and circumferential directions, with the phase structure determined by the winding number (WN) $m$. Odd and even values of $n$ must associate, respectively, with integer and half-integer values of $m$, the latter ones requiring two cycles of motion around MS for returning to the initial phase. Using variational and numerical methods, we solve the GP equation with the attractive nonlinearity, producing a family of ground-state (GS) solitons for values of the norm below the critical one, above which the collapse sets in. Vortex solitons with $n=1,m=1$ and $% n=2,m=1/2$ are obtained in a numerical form. The vortex solitons with $% n=1,m=1$ are almost uniformly distributed in the azimuthal direction, while ones with $n=2,m=1/2$ form localized states. The Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion and linear-stability analysis for the GS soliton solutions and vortices with $n=1,m=1$ demonstrates that they are completely stable, while the localized states with $n=2,m=1/2$ are completely unstable. Finally, the motion of solitons on the MS and the collision of two solitons are discussed.

Post-Training Quantization for 3D Medical Image Segmentation: A Practical Study on Real Inference Engines

Quantizing deep neural networks ,reducing the precision (bit-width) of their computations, can remarkably decrease memory usage and accelerate processing, making these models more suitable for large-scale medical imaging applications with limited computational resources. However, many existing methods studied "fake quantization", which simulates lower precision operations during inference, but does not actually reduce model size or improve real-world inference speed. Moreover, the potential of deploying real 3D low-bit quantization on modern GPUs is still unexplored. In this study, we introduce a real post-training quantization (PTQ) framework that successfully implements true 8-bit quantization on state-of-the-art (SOTA) 3D medical segmentation models, i.e., U-Net, SegResNet, SwinUNETR, nnU-Net, UNesT, TransUNet, ST-UNet,and VISTA3D. Our approach involves two main steps. First, we use TensorRT to perform fake quantization for both weights and activations with unlabeled calibration dataset. Second, we convert this fake quantization into real quantization via TensorRT engine on real GPUs, resulting in real-world reductions in model size and inference latency. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework effectively performs 8-bit quantization on GPUs without sacrificing model performance. This advancement enables the deployment of efficient deep learning models in medical imaging applications where computational resources are constrained. The code and models have been released, including U-Net, TransUNet pretrained on the BTCV dataset for abdominal (13-label) segmentation, UNesT pretrained on the Whole Brain Dataset for whole brain (133-label) segmentation, and nnU-Net, SegResNet, SwinUNETR and VISTA3D pretrained on TotalSegmentator V2 for full body (104-label) segmentation. https://github.com/hrlblab/PTQ.

Study on the efficiency droop in high-quality GaN material under high photoexcitation intensity

III-V nitride semiconductors, represented by GaN, have attracted significant research attention. Driven by the growing interest in smart micro-displays, there is a strong desire to achieve enhanced light output from even smaller light-emitting diode (LED) chips. However, the most perplexing phenomenon and the most significant challenge in the study of emission properties under high-injection conditions in GaN has always been efficiency droop for decades, where LEDs exhibit a substantial loss in efficiency at high driving currents. In this paper, we present our study on the intrinsic emission properties of high-quality GaN material based on the density of states and the principles of momentum conservation. Our theoretical calculations reveal a momentum distribution mismatch between the non-equilibrium excess electrons and holes, which becomes more significant as the carrier concentration increases. Our excitation-dependent photoluminescence measurements conducted at 6 K exhibited a clear droop for all exciton recombinations, but droop-free for phonon-assisted recombination due to phonons compensating for the momentum mismatch. These findings indicate that the momentum distribution mismatch between the non-equilibrium excess electrons and holes is one of the intrinsic causes of the efficiency droop, which originates from the intrinsic band properties of GaN. These results suggest that proper active region design aimed at reducing this mismatch will contribute to the development of ultra-highly efficient lighting devices in the future.

Cavity Plasmon: Enhanced Luminescence Effect on InGaN Light Emitting Diodes

We fabricated polygonal nanoholes in the top p-GaN layer of the InGaN/GaN light-emitting diode, followed by the deposition of Au/Al metal thin film within the nanoholes to create metal microcavities, thereby constructing the surface plasmon structure. The findings indicate that with increased current injection, the light output of the LEDs rose by 46%, accompanied by a shift of the gain peak position towards the plasmon resonance energy. The maximum enhancement factor increases to 2.38 as the coupling distance decreases from 60 nm to 30 nm. Interestingly, time-resolved photoluminescence data showed that the spontaneous emission decay time lengthened due to the plasmon coupling, suggesting the presence of a new plasmon coupling mechanism. Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation results show that the electric field is localized at certain locations around the metal microcavity, generating a new type of shape-sensitive plasmon, named Cavity Plasmon here. This intense localization leads to a longer lifetime and enhances the recombination efficiency of excitons. We discuss several unique properties of the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity with several specific angular shapes. The results demonstrate that the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity is a highly promising technique for enhancing the light emission performance of of relevant semiconductor optoelectronic devices.

SurvAttack: Black-Box Attack On Survival Models through Ontology-Informed EHR Perturbation

Survival analysis (SA) models have been widely studied in mining electronic health records (EHRs), particularly in forecasting the risk of critical conditions for prioritizing high-risk patients. However, their vulnerability to adversarial attacks is much less explored in the literature. Developing black-box perturbation algorithms and evaluating their impact on state-of-the-art survival models brings two benefits to medical applications. First, it can effectively evaluate the robustness of models in pre-deployment testing. Also, exploring how subtle perturbations would result in significantly different outcomes can provide counterfactual insights into the clinical interpretation of model prediction. In this work, we introduce SurvAttack, a novel black-box adversarial attack framework leveraging subtle clinically compatible, and semantically consistent perturbations on longitudinal EHRs to degrade survival models' predictive performance. We specifically develop a greedy algorithm to manipulate medical codes with various adversarial actions throughout a patient's medical history. Then, these adversarial actions are prioritized using a composite scoring strategy based on multi-aspect perturbation quality, including saliency, perturbation stealthiness, and clinical meaningfulness. The proposed adversarial EHR perturbation algorithm is then used in an efficient SA-specific strategy to attack a survival model when estimating the temporal ranking of survival urgency for patients. To demonstrate the significance of our work, we conduct extensive experiments, including baseline comparisons, explainability analysis, and case studies. The experimental results affirm our research's effectiveness in illustrating the vulnerabilities of patient survival models, model interpretation, and ultimately contributing to healthcare quality.

Batch Selection for Multi-Label Classification Guided by Uncertainty and Dynamic Label Correlations

The accuracy of deep neural networks is significantly influenced by the effectiveness of mini-batch construction during training. In single-label scenarios, such as binary and multi-class classification tasks, it has been demonstrated that batch selection algorithms preferring samples with higher uncertainty achieve better performance than difficulty-based methods. Although there are two batch selection methods tailored for multi-label data, none of them leverage important uncertainty information. Adapting the concept of uncertainty to multi-label data is not a trivial task, since there are two issues that should be tackled. First, traditional variance or entropy-based uncertainty measures ignore fluctuations of predictions within sliding windows and the importance of the current model state. Second, existing multi-label methods do not explicitly exploit the label correlations, particularly the uncertainty-based label correlations that evolve during the training process. In this paper, we propose an uncertainty-based multi-label batch selection algorithm. It assesses uncertainty for each label by considering differences between successive predictions and the confidence of current outputs, and further leverages dynamic uncertainty-based label correlations to emphasize instances whose uncertainty is synergistically expressed across multiple labels. Empirical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in improving the performance and accelerating the convergence of various multi-label deep learning models.

Ground-state phase transitions in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling

We investigate phase transitions of the ground state (GS) of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates under the combined action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and gradient magnetic field. Introducing appropariate raising and lowering operators, we exactly solve the linear system. Analyzing the obtained energy spectrum, we conclude that simultaneous variation of the magnetic-field gradient and SOC strength leads to the transition of excited states into the GS. As a result, any excited state can transition to the GS, at appropriate values of the system's parameters. The nonlinear system is solved numerically, showing that the GS phase transition, similar to the one in the linear system, still exists under the action of the repulsive nonlinearity. In the case of weak attraction, a mixed state appears near the GS transition point, while the GS transitions into an edge state under the action of strong attractive interaction.
