Real-time Human Action Recognition Using Locally Aggregated Kinematic-Guided Skeletonlet and Supervised Hashing-by-Analysis Model

3D action recognition is referred to as the classification of action sequences which consist of 3D skeleton joints. While many research work are devoted to 3D action recognition, it mainly suffers from three problems: highly complicated articulation, a great amount of noise, and a low implementation efficiency. To tackle all these problems, we propose a real-time 3D action recognition framework by integrating the locally aggregated kinematic-guided skeletonlet (LAKS) with a supervised hashing-by-analysis (SHA) model. We first define the skeletonlet as a few combinations of joint offsets grouped in terms of kinematic principle, and then represent an action sequence using LAKS, which consists of a denoising phase and a locally aggregating phase. The denoising phase detects the noisy action data and adjust it by replacing all the features within it with the features of the corresponding previous frame, while the locally aggregating phase sums the difference between an offset feature of the skeletonlet and its cluster center together over all the offset features of the sequence. Finally, the SHA model which combines sparse representation with a hashing model, aiming at promoting the recognition accuracy while maintaining a high efficiency. Experimental results on MSRAction3D, UTKinectAction3D and Florence3DAction datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both recognition accuracy and implementation efficiency.

Grassmannian Graph-attentional Landmark Selection for Domain Adaptation

Domain adaptation aims to leverage information from the source domain to improve the classification performance in the target domain. It mainly utilizes two schemes: sample reweighting and feature matching. While the first scheme allocates different weights to individual samples, the second scheme matches the feature of two domains using global structural statistics. The two schemes are complementary with each other, which are expected to jointly work for robust domain adaptation. Several methods combine the two schemes, but the underlying relationship of samples is insufficiently analyzed due to the neglect of the hierarchy of samples and the geometric properties between samples. To better combine the advantages of the two schemes, we propose a Grassmannian graph-attentional landmark selection (GGLS) framework for domain adaptation. GGLS presents a landmark selection scheme using attention-induced neighbors of the graphical structure of samples and performs distribution adaptation and knowledge adaptation over Grassmann manifold. the former treats the landmarks of each sample differently, and the latter avoids feature distortion and achieves better geometric properties. Experimental results on different real-world cross-domain visual recognition tasks demonstrate that GGLS provides better classification accuracies compared with state-of-the-art domain adaptation methods.

More but Correct: Generating Diversified and Entity-revised Medical Response

Medical Dialogue Generation (MDG) is intended to build a medical dialogue system for intelligent consultation, which can communicate with patients in real-time, thereby improving the efficiency of clinical diagnosis with broad application prospects. This paper presents our proposed framework for the Chinese MDG organized by the 2021 China conference on knowledge graph and semantic computing (CCKS) competition, which requires generating context-consistent and medically meaningful responses conditioned on the dialogue history. In our framework, we propose a pipeline system composed of entity prediction and entity-aware dialogue generation, by adding predicted entities to the dialogue model with a fusion mechanism, thereby utilizing information from different sources. At the decoding stage, we propose a new decoding mechanism named Entity-revised Diverse Beam Search (EDBS) to improve entity correctness and promote the length and quality of the final response. The proposed method wins both the CCKS and the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) 2021 Workshop Machine Learning for Preventing and Combating Pandemics (MLPCP) Track 1 Entity-aware MED competitions, which demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of our method.

Generating Relevant and Coherent Dialogue Responses using Self-separated Conditional Variational AutoEncoders

Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (CVAE) effectively increases the diversity and informativeness of responses in open-ended dialogue generation tasks through enriching the context vector with sampled latent variables. However, due to the inherent one-to-many and many-to-one phenomena in human dialogues, the sampled latent variables may not correctly reflect the contexts' semantics, leading to irrelevant and incoherent generated responses. To resolve this problem, we propose Self-separated Conditional Variational AutoEncoder (abbreviated as SepaCVAE) that introduces group information to regularize the latent variables, which enhances CVAE by improving the responses' relevance and coherence while maintaining their diversity and informativeness. SepaCVAE actively divides the input data into groups, and then widens the absolute difference between data pairs from distinct groups, while narrowing the relative distance between data pairs in the same group. Empirical results from automatic evaluation and detailed analysis demonstrate that SepaCVAE can significantly boost responses in well-established open-domain dialogue datasets.

THINK: A Novel Conversation Model for Generating Grammatically Correct and Coherent Responses

Many existing conversation models that are based on the encoder-decoder framework have focused on ways to make the encoder more complicated to enrich the context vectors so as to increase the diversity and informativeness of generated responses. However, these approaches face two problems. First, the decoder is too simple to effectively utilize the previously generated information and tends to generate duplicated and self-contradicting responses. Second, the complex encoder tends to generate diverse but incoherent responses because the complex context vectors may deviate from the original semantics of context. In this work, we proposed a conversation model named "THINK" (Teamwork generation Hover around Impressive Noticeable Keywords) to make the decoder more complicated and avoid generating duplicated and self-contradicting responses. The model simplifies the context vectors and increases the coherence of generated responses in a reasonable way. For this model, we propose Teamwork generation framework and Semantics Extractor. Compared with other baselines, both automatic and human evaluation showed the advantages of our model.

GAN for Vision, KG for Relation: a Two-stage Deep Network for Zero-shot Action Recognition

Zero-shot action recognition can recognize samples of unseen classes that are unavailable in training by exploring common latent semantic representation in samples. However, most methods neglected the connotative relation and extensional relation between the action classes, which leads to the poor generalization ability of the zero-shot learning. Furthermore, the learned classifier incline to predict the samples of seen class, which leads to poor classification performance. To solve the above problems, we propose a two-stage deep neural network for zero-shot action recognition, which consists of a feature generation sub-network serving as the sampling stage and a graph attention sub-network serving as the classification stage. In the sampling stage, we utilize a generative adversarial networks (GAN) trained by action features and word vectors of seen classes to synthesize the action features of unseen classes, which can balance the training sample data of seen classes and unseen classes. In the classification stage, we construct a knowledge graph (KG) based on the relationship between word vectors of action classes and related objects, and propose a graph convolution network (GCN) based on attention mechanism, which dynamically updates the relationship between action classes and objects, and enhances the generalization ability of zero-shot learning. In both stages, we all use word vectors as bridges for feature generation and classifier generalization from seen classes to unseen classes. We compare our method with state-of-the-art methods on UCF101 and HMDB51 datasets. Experimental results show that our proposed method improves the classification performance of the trained classifier and achieves higher accuracy.

Skeleton Aware Multi-modal Sign Language Recognition

Sign language is commonly used by deaf or speech impaired people to communicate but requires significant effort to master. Sign Language Recognition (SLR) aims to bridge the gap between sign language users and others by recognizing signs from given videos. It is an essential yet challenging task since sign language is performed with the fast and complex movement of hand gestures, body posture, and even facial expressions. Recently, skeleton-based action recognition attracts increasing attention due to the independence between the subject and background variation. However, skeleton-based SLR is still under exploration due to the lack of annotations on hand keypoints. Some efforts have been made to use hand detectors with pose estimators to extract hand key points and learn to recognize sign language via Neural Networks, but none of them outperforms RGB-based methods. To this end, we propose a novel Skeleton Aware Multi-modal SLR framework (SAM-SLR) to take advantage of multi-modal information towards a higher recognition rate. Specifically, we propose a Sign Language Graph Convolution Network (SL-GCN) to model the embedded dynamics and a novel Separable Spatial-Temporal Convolution Network (SSTCN) to exploit skeleton features. RGB and depth modalities are also incorporated and assembled into our framework to provide global information that is complementary to the skeleton-based methods SL-GCN and SSTCN. As a result, SAM-SLR achieves the highest performance in both RGB (98.42\%) and RGB-D (98.53\%) tracks in 2021 Looking at People Large Scale Signer Independent Isolated SLR Challenge. Role of electron and ion irradiation in a reliable lift-off process with e-beam evaporation and a bilayer PMMA resist system

This paper addresses issues related to cracking and blisters in deposited films encountered in a lift-off process with electron beam evaporation and a bilayer PMMA resist system. The impact of charged particles, i.e. electrons and ions, is investigated using an electron beam evaporation chamber equipped with ring-magnets and a plate electrode placed in front of the sample. By replacing the plate electrode with a hollow cylinder, the modified evaporation setup utilizing passive components allows a complete elimination of resist shrinkage and blistering yielding near perfect deposition results for a large variety of different materials.

On the Performance of Dual-Gate Reconfigurable Nanowire Transistors

We investigate the operation of dual-gate reconfigurable field-effect transistor (RFET) in the programgate at drain (PGAD) and program-gate at source (PGAS) configurations. To this end, dual-gate silicon nanowire (SiNW) FETs are fabricated based on anisotropic wet chemical silicon etching and nickel silicidation yielding silicide-SiNW Schottky junctions at source and drain. Whereas in PGAD-configuration ambipolar operation is suppressed, switching is deteriorated due to the injection through a Schottky-barrier. Operating the RFET in PGAS configuration yields a switching behavior close to a conventional MOSFET. This, howewer, needs to be traded off against strongly non-linear output characteristics for small bias.

Cohomology of group theoretic Dehn fillings II: A spectral sequence

This is the second paper in a series of three papers aiming to study cohomology of group theoretic Dehn fillings. In the present paper, we derive a spectral sequence for Cohen-Lyndon triples which can be thought of as a refined version of the classical Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence in the settings of group theoretic Dehn fillings. In the next paper arXiv:1908.01290, we will apply this spectral sequence to study cohomological finiteness properties of Dehn fillings of acylindrically hyperbolic groups.

Regularizing Dialogue Generation by Imitating Implicit Scenarios

Human dialogues are scenario-based and appropriate responses generally relate to the latent context knowledge entailed by the specific scenario. To enable responses that are more meaningful and context-specific, we propose to improve generative dialogue systems from the scenario perspective, where both dialogue history and future conversation are taken into account to implicitly reconstruct the scenario knowledge. More importantly, the conversation scenarios are further internalized using imitation learning framework, where the conventional dialogue model that has no access to future conversations is effectively regularized by transferring the scenario knowledge contained in hierarchical supervising signals from the scenario-based dialogue model, so that the future conversation is not required in actual inference. Extensive evaluations show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on diversity and relevance, and expresses scenario-specific knowledge.

Recent Advances and New Guidelines on Hyperspectral and Multispectral Image Fusion

Hyperspectral image (HSI) with high spectral resolution often suffers from low spatial resolution owing to the limitations of imaging sensors. Image fusion is an effective and economical way to enhance the spatial resolution of HSI, which combines HSI with higher spatial resolution multispectral image (MSI) of the same scenario. In the past years, many HSI and MSI fusion algorithms are introduced to obtain high-resolution HSI. However, it lacks a full-scale review for the newly proposed HSI and MSI fusion approaches. To tackle this problem, this work gives a comprehensive review and new guidelines for HSI-MSI fusion. According to the characteristics of HSI-MSI fusion methods, they are categorized as four categories, including pan-sharpening based approaches, matrix factorization based approaches, tensor representation based approaches, and deep convolution neural network based approaches. We make a detailed introduction, discussions, and comparison for the fusion methods in each category. Additionally, the existing challenges and possible future directions for the HSI-MSI fusion are presented.

EV-Action: Electromyography-Vision Multi-Modal Action Dataset

Multi-modal human action analysis is a critical and attractive research topic. However, the majority of the existing datasets only provide visual modalities (i.e., RGB, depth and skeleton). To make up this, we introduce a new, large-scale EV-Action dataset in this work, which consists of RGB, depth, electromyography (EMG), and two skeleton modalities. Compared with the conventional datasets, EV-Action dataset has two major improvements: (1) we deploy a motion capturing system to obtain high quality skeleton modality, which provides more comprehensive motion information including skeleton, trajectory, acceleration with higher accuracy, sampling frequency, and more skeleton markers. (2) we introduce an EMG modality which is usually used as an effective indicator in the biomechanics area, also it has yet to be well explored in motion related research. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first action dataset with EMG modality. The details of EV-Action dataset are clarified, meanwhile, a simple yet effective framework for EMG-based action recognition is proposed. Moreover, state-of-the-art baselines are applied to evaluate the effectiveness of all the modalities. The obtained result clearly shows the validity of EMG modality in human action analysis tasks. We hope this dataset can make significant contributions to human motion analysis, computer vision, machine learning, biomechanics, and other interdisciplinary fields.

Fully Automated Multi-Organ Segmentation in Abdominal Magnetic Resonance Imaging with Deep Neural Networks

Segmentation of multiple organs-at-risk (OARs) is essential for radiation therapy treatment planning and other clinical applications. We developed an Automated deep Learning-based Abdominal Multi-Organ segmentation (ALAMO) framework based on 2D U-net and a densely connected network structure with tailored design in data augmentation and training procedures such as deep connection, auxiliary supervision, and multi-view. The model takes in multi-slice MR images and generates the output of segmentation results. Three-Tesla T1 VIBE (Volumetric Interpolated Breath-hold Examination) images of 102 subjects were collected and used in our study. Ten OARs were studied, including the liver, spleen, pancreas, left/right kidneys, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, spinal cord, and vertebral bodies. Two radiologists manually labeled and obtained the consensus contours as the ground-truth. In the complete cohort of 102, 20 samples were held out for independent testing, and the rest were used for training and validation. The performance was measured using volume overlapping and surface distance. The ALAMO framework generated segmentation labels in good agreement with the manual results. Specifically, among the 10 OARs, 9 achieved high Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSCs) in the range of 0.87-0.96, except for the duodenum with a DSC of 0.80. The inference completes within one minute for a 3D volume of 320x288x180. Overall, the ALAMO model matches the state-of-the-art performance. The proposed ALAMO framework allows for fully automated abdominal MR segmentation with high accuracy and low memory and computation time demands.

FollowMeUp Sports: New Benchmark for 2D Human Keypoint Recognition

Human pose estimation has made significant advancement in recent years. However, the existing datasets are limited in their coverage of pose variety. In this paper, we introduce a novel benchmark FollowMeUp Sports that makes an important advance in terms of specific postures, self-occlusion and class balance, a contribution that we feel is required for future development in human body models. This comprehensive dataset was collected using an established taxonomy of over 200 standard workout activities with three different shot angles. The collected videos cover a wider variety of specific workout activities than previous datasets including push-up, squat and body moving near the ground with severe self-occlusion or occluded by some sport equipment and outfits. Given these rich images, we perform a detailed analysis of the leading human pose estimation approaches gaining insights for the success and failures of these methods.

LPRNet: Lightweight Deep Network by Low-rank Pointwise Residual Convolution

Deep learning has become popular in recent years primarily due to the powerful computing device such as GPUs. However, deploying these deep models to end-user devices, smart phones, or embedded systems with limited resources is challenging. To reduce the computation and memory costs, we propose a novel lightweight deep learning module by low-rank pointwise residual (LPR) convolution, called LPRNet. Essentially, LPR aims at using low-rank approximation in pointwise convolution to further reduce the module size, while keeping depthwise convolutions as the residual module to rectify the LPR module. This is critical when the low-rankness undermines the convolution process. We embody our design by replacing modules of identical input-output dimension in MobileNet and ShuffleNetv2. Experiments on visual recognition tasks including image classification and face alignment on popular benchmarks show that our LPRNet achieves competitive performance but with significant reduction of Flops and memory cost compared to the state-of-the-art deep models focusing on model compression.

Real-time Memory Efficient Large-pose Face Alignment via Deep Evolutionary Network

There is an urgent need to apply face alignment in a memory-efficient and real-time manner due to the recent explosion of face recognition applications. However, impact factors such as large pose variation and computational inefficiency, still hinder its broad implementation. To this end, we propose a computationally efficient deep evolutionary model integrated with 3D Diffusion Heap Maps (DHM). First, we introduce a sparse 3D DHM to assist the initial modeling process under extreme pose conditions. Afterward, a simple and effective CNN feature is extracted and fed to Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for evolutionary learning. To accelerate the model, we propose an efficient network structure to accelerate the evolutionary learning process through a factorization strategy. Extensive experiments on three popular alignment databases demonstrate the advantage of the proposed models over the state-of-the-art, especially under large-pose conditions. Notably, the computational speed of our model is 6 times faster than the state-of-the-art on CPU and 14 times on GPU. We also discuss and analyze the limitations of our models and future research work.

GeoCapsNet: Aerial to Ground view Image Geo-localization using Capsule Network

The task of cross-view image geo-localization aims to determine the geo-location (GPS coordinates) of a query ground-view image by matching it with the GPS-tagged aerial (satellite) images in a reference dataset. Due to the dramatic changes of viewpoint, matching the cross-view images is challenging. In this paper, we propose the GeoCapsNet based on the capsule network for ground-to-aerial image geo-localization. The network first extracts features from both ground-view and aerial images via standard convolution layers and the capsule layers further encode the features to model the spatial feature hierarchies and enhance the representation power. Moreover, we introduce a simple and effective weighted soft-margin triplet loss with online batch hard sample mining, which can greatly improve image retrieval accuracy. Experimental results show that our GeoCapsNet significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on two benchmark datasets.
