Knowledge Graph Embedding with Iterative Guidance from Soft Rules

Embedding knowledge graphs (KGs) into continuous vector spaces is a focus of current research. Combining such an embedding model with logic rules has recently attracted increasing attention. Most previous attempts made a one-time injection of logic rules, ignoring the interactive nature between embedding learning and logical inference. And they focused only on hard rules, which always hold with no exception and usually require extensive manual effort to create or validate. In this paper, we propose Rule-Guided Embedding (RUGE), a novel paradigm of KG embedding with iterative guidance from soft rules. RUGE enables an embedding model to learn simultaneously from 1) labeled triples that have been directly observed in a given KG, 2) unlabeled triples whose labels are going to be predicted iteratively, and 3) soft rules with various confidence levels extracted automatically from the KG. In the learning process, RUGE iteratively queries rules to obtain soft labels for unlabeled triples, and integrates such newly labeled triples to update the embedding model. Through this iterative procedure, knowledge embodied in logic rules may be better transferred into the learned embeddings. We evaluate RUGE in link prediction on Freebase and YAGO. Experimental results show that: 1) with rule knowledge injected iteratively, RUGE achieves significant and consistent improvements over state-of-the-art baselines; and 2) despite their uncertainties, automatically extracted soft rules are highly beneficial to KG embedding, even those with moderate confidence levels. The code and data used for this paper can be obtained from https://github.com/iieir-km/RUGE.

ExaGridPF: A Parallel Power Flow Solver for Transmission and Unbalanced Distribution Systems

This paper investigates parallelization strategies for solving power flow problems in both transmission and unbalanced, three-phase distribution systems by developing a scalable power flow solver, ExaGridPF, which is compatible with existing high-performance computing platforms. Newton-Raphson (NR) and Newton-Krylov (NK) algorithms have been implemented to verify the performance improvement over both standard IEEE test cases and synthesized grid topologies. For three-phase, unbalanced system, we adapt the current injection method (CIM) to model the power flow and utilize SuperLU to parallelize the computing load across multiple threads. The experimental results indicate that more than 5 times speedup ratio can be achieved for synthesized large-scale transmission topologies, and significant efficiency improvements are observed over existing methods for the distribution networks.

Lux in obscuro II: Photon Orbits of Extremal AdS Black Holes Revisited

A large class of spherically symmetric static extremal black hole spacetimes possesses a stable null photon sphere on their horizons. For the extremal Kerr-Newman family, the photon sphere only really coincides with the horizon in the sense clarified by Doran. The condition under which photon orbit is stable on an asymptotically flat extremal Kerr-Newman black hole horizon has recently been clarified; it is found that a sufficiently large angular momentum destabilizes the photon orbit, whereas electrical charge tends to stabilize it. We investigated the effect of a negative cosmological constant on this observation, and found the same behavior in the case of an extremal asymptotically Kerr-Newman-AdS black holes in (3+1)-dimensions. In (2+1)-dimensions, in the presence of electrical charge, the angular momentum never becomes large enough to destabilize the photon orbit. We comment on the instabilities of black hole spacetimes with a stable photon orbit.

Learning neural trans-dimensional random field language models with noise-contrastive estimation

Trans-dimensional random field language models (TRF LMs) where sentences are modeled as a collection of random fields, have shown close performance with LSTM LMs in speech recognition and are computationally more efficient in inference. However, the training efficiency of neural TRF LMs is not satisfactory, which limits the scalability of TRF LMs on large training corpus. In this paper, several techniques on both model formulation and parameter estimation are proposed to improve the training efficiency and the performance of neural TRF LMs. First, TRFs are reformulated in the form of exponential tilting of a reference distribution. Second, noise-contrastive estimation (NCE) is introduced to jointly estimate the model parameters and normalization constants. Third, we extend the neural TRF LMs by marrying the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and the bidirectional LSTM into the potential function to extract the deep hierarchical features and bidirectionally sequential features. Utilizing all the above techniques enables the successful and efficient training of neural TRF LMs on a 40x larger training set with only 1/3 training time and further reduces the WER with relative reduction of 4.7% on top of a strong LSTM LM baseline.

Constraints on the dark matter and dark energy interactions from weak lensing bispectrum tomography

We estimate uncertainties of cosmological parameters for phenomenological interacting dark energy models using weak lensing convergence power spectrum and bispectrum. We focus on the bispectrum tomography and examine how well the weak lensing bispectrum with tomography can constrain the interactions between dark sectors, as well as other cosmological parameters. Employing the Fisher matrix analysis, we forecast parameter uncertainties derived from weak lensing bispectra with a two-bin tomography and place upper bounds on strength of the interactions between the dark sectors. The cosmic shear will be measured from upcoming weak lensing surveys with high sensitivity, thus it enables us to use the higher order correlation functions of weak lensing to constrain the interaction between dark sectors and will potentially provide more stringent results with other observations combined.

Language modeling with Neural trans-dimensional random fields

Trans-dimensional random field language models (TRF LMs) have recently been introduced, where sentences are modeled as a collection of random fields. The TRF approach has been shown to have the advantages of being computationally more efficient in inference than LSTM LMs with close performance and being able to flexibly integrating rich features. In this paper we propose neural TRFs, beyond of the previous discrete TRFs that only use linear potentials with discrete features. The idea is to use nonlinear potentials with continuous features, implemented by neural networks (NNs), in the TRF framework. Neural TRFs combine the advantages of both NNs and TRFs. The benefits of word embedding, nonlinear feature learning and larger context modeling are inherited from the use of NNs. At the same time, the strength of efficient inference by avoiding expensive softmax is preserved. A number of technical contributions, including employing deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to define the potentials and incorporating the joint stochastic approximation (JSA) strategy in the training algorithm, are developed in this work, which enable us to successfully train neural TRF LMs. Various LMs are evaluated in terms of speech recognition WERs by rescoring the 1000-best lists of WSJ'92 test data. The results show that neural TRF LMs not only improve over discrete TRF LMs, but also perform slightly better than LSTM LMs with only one fifth of parameters and 16x faster inference efficiency.

Approximate Analytical Solutions of Power Flow Equations Based on Multi-Dimensional Holomorphic Embedding Method

It is well known that closed-form analytical solutions for AC power flow equations do not exist in general. This paper proposes a multi-dimensional holomorphic embedding method (MDHEM) to obtain an explicit approximate analytical AC power-flow solution by finding a physical germ solution and arbitrarily embedding each power, each load or groups of loads with respective scales. Based on the MDHEM, the complete approximate analytical solutions to the power flow equations in the high-dimensional space become achievable, since the voltage vector of each bus can be explicitly expressed by a convergent multivariate power series of all the loads. Unlike the traditional iterative methods for power flow calculation and inaccurate sensitivity analysis method for voltage control, the algebraic variables of a power system in all operating conditions can be prepared offline and evaluated online by only plugging in the values of any operating conditions into the scales of the non-linear multivariate power series. Case studies implemented on the 4-bus test system and the IEEE 14-bus standard system confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Tests of Cold Atom Clock in Orbit

Since the atomic clock was invented, its performance has been improved for one digit every decade until 90s of last century when the traditional atomic clock almost reached its limit. With laser cooled atoms, the performance can be further improved, and nowadays the cold atom based clocks are widely used as primary frequency standards. Such a kind of cold atom clocks has great applications in space. This paper presents the design and tests of a cold atom clock (CAC) operating in space. In microgravity, the atoms are cooled, trapped, launched and finally detected after being interrogated by microwave field with Ramsey method. The results of laser cooling of atoms in microgravity in orbit are presented and compared with that on ground for the first time. That the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of obtained central Ramsey fringes varies linearly with launching velocity of cold atoms shows the effects of microgravity. With appropriate parameters, a closed-loop locking of the CAC is realized in orbit and the estimated short term frequency stability of $3.0\times 10 ^{-13}/\sqrt{τ}$ has been reached.

Quantum computational complexity, Einstein's equations and accelerated expansion of the Universe

We study the relation between quantum computational complexity and general relativity. The quantum computational complexity is proposed to be quantified by the shortest length of geodesic quantum curves. We examine the complexity/volume duality in a geodesic causal ball in the framework of Fermi normal coordinates and derive the full non-linear Einstein equation. Using insights from the complexity/action duality, we argue that the accelerated expansion of the universe could be driven by the quantum complexity and free from coincidence and fine-tunning problems.

Cycles that are incidence equivalent to zero

In this paper, we apply incidence divisors constructed through Archimedean height paring to prove that Griffiths' conjecture on incidence equivalence is correct for a smooth projective variety with first non-vanishing cohomology. (Incidence divisor is insignificant. Theorem 5.1 is significant, but the proof of it presented here is incorrect.)

Multi-stage Multi-recursive-input Fully Convolutional Networks for Neuronal Boundary Detection

In the field of connectomics, neuroscientists seek to identify cortical connectivity comprehensively. Neuronal boundary detection from the Electron Microscopy (EM) images is often done to assist the automatic reconstruction of neuronal circuit. But the segmentation of EM images is a challenging problem, as it requires the detector to be able to detect both filament-like thin and blob-like thick membrane, while suppressing the ambiguous intracellular structure. In this paper, we propose multi-stage multi-recursive-input fully convolutional networks to address this problem. The multiple recursive inputs for one stage, i.e., the multiple side outputs with different receptive field sizes learned from the lower stage, provide multi-scale contextual boundary information for the consecutive learning. This design is biologically-plausible, as it likes a human visual system to compare different possible segmentation solutions to address the ambiguous boundary issue. Our multi-stage networks are trained end-to-end. It achieves promising results on two public available EM segmentation datasets, the mouse piriform cortex dataset and the ISBI 2012 EM dataset.

Online Voltage Stability Assessment for Load Areas Based on the Holomorphic Embedding Method

This paper proposes an online steady-state voltage stability assessment scheme to evaluate the proximity to voltage collapse at each bus of a load area. Using a non-iterative holomorphic embedding method (HEM) with a proposed physical germ solution, an accurate loading limit at each load bus can be calculated based on online state estimation on the entire load area and a measurement-based equivalent for the external system. The HEM employs a power series to calculate an accurate Power-Voltage (P-V) curve at each load bus and accordingly evaluates the voltage stability margin considering load variations in the next period. An adaptive two-stage Pade approximants method is proposed to improve the convergence of the power series for accurate determination of the nose point on the P-V curve with moderate computational burden. The proposed method is illustrated in detail on a 4-bus test system and then demonstrated on a load area of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) 48-geneartor, 140-bus power system.

Relative and Mean Motions of Multi-Machine Power Systems in Classical Model

It is well-known that in an m-machine power system where each machine is represented by a second-order differential equation, the Jacobian of the system equation contains (m-1) pairs of conjugate eigenvalues and two real eigenvalues, including at least one zero. This letter proves that under the uniform damping condition, the dynamics associated with the two real eigenvalues do not have any impact on the dynamics associated with those complex eigenvalues. This conclusion is important to justify the use of the relative motions or center-of-inertia (COI) coordinate to analyze the rotor angle stability in a multi-machine power system.

Traffic-Aware Transmission Mode Selection in D2D-enabled Cellular Networks with Token System

We consider a D2D-enabled cellular network where user equipments (UEs) owned by rational users are incentivized to form D2D pairs using tokens. They exchange tokens electronically to "buy" and "sell" D2D services. Meanwhile the devices have the ability to choose the transmission mode, i.e. receiving data via cellular links or D2D links. Thus taking the different benefits brought by diverse traffic types as a prior, the UEs can utilize their tokens more efficiently via transmission mode selection. In this paper, the optimal transmission mode selection strategy as well as token collection policy are investigated to maximize the long-term utility in the dynamic network environment. The optimal policy is proved to be a threshold strategy, and the thresholds have a monotonicity property. Numerical simulations verify our observations and the gain from transmission mode selection is observed.

Thermodynamical and dynamical properties of Charged BTZ Black Holes

We investigate the spacetime properties of BTZ black holes in the presence of the Maxwell field and Born-Infeld field and find rich properties in the spacetime structures when the model parameters are varied. Employing the Landau-Lifshitz theory, we examine the thermodynamical phase transition in the charged BTZ black holes. We further study the dynamical perturbation in the background of the charged BTZ black holes and find different properties in the dynamics when the thermodynamical phase transition occurs.

Entanglement Entropy and Complexity for One-Dimensional Holographic Superconductors

Holographic superconductor is an important arena for holography, as it allows concrete calculations to further understand the dictionary between bulk physics and boundary physics. An important quantity of recent interest is the holographic complexity. Conflicting claims had been made in the literature concerning the behavior of holographic complexity during phase transition. We clarify this issue by performing a numerical study on one-dimensional holographic superconductor. Our investigation shows that holographic complexity does not behave in the same way as holographic entanglement entropy. Nevertheless, the universal terms of both quantities are finite and reflect the phase transition at the same critical temperature.

Photoresponse of Natural van der Waals Heterostructures

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures consisting of two dimensional materials offer a platform to obtain material by design and are very attractive owing to novel electronic states. Research on 2D van der Waals heterostructures (vdWH) has so far been focused on fabricating individually stacked atomically thin unary or binary crystals. Such systems include graphene (Gr), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and member of the transition metal dichalcogenides family. Here we present our experimental study of the opto-electronic properties of a naturally occurring vdWH, known as Franckeite, which is a complex layered crystal composed of lead, tin, antimony, iron and sulfur. We present here that thin film franckeite (60 nm < d < 100 nm) behave as narrow band gap semiconductor demonstrating a wide band photoresponse. We have observed the band-edge transition at ~ 1500 nm (~830 meV) and high external quantum efficiency (EQE~3%) at room temperature. Laser power resolved and temperature resolved photocurrent measurements reveal that the photo-carrier generation and recombination are dominated by continuously distributed trap states within the band gap. To understand wavelength resolved photocurrent, we also calculated the optical absorption properties via density functional theory. Finally, we have shown that the device has fast photoresponse with rise time as fast as ~ 1 ms. Our study provides a fundamental understanding of the optoelectronic behavior in a complex naturally occurring vdWH and can open up the possibilities of producing new type of nanoscale optoelectronic devices with tailored properties.
