Multi-Stage Holomorphic Embedding Method for Calculating the Power-Voltage Curve

The recently proposed non-iterative load flow method, called the holomorphic embedding method, may encounter the precision issue, i.e. nontrivial round-off errors caused by the limit of digits used in computation when calculating the power-voltage (P-V) curve for a heavily loaded power system. This letter proposes a multi-stage scheme to solve such a precision issue and calculate an accurate P-V curve. The scheme is verified on the New Eng-land 39-bus power system and benchmarked with the result from the traditional continuation power flow method.

Centers of probability measures without the mean

In the recent years, the notion of mixability has been developed with applications to optimal transportation, quantitative finance and operations research. An $n$-tuple of distributions is said to be jointly mixable if there exist $n$ random variables following these distributions and adding up to a constant, called center, with probability one. When the $n$ distributions are identical, we speak of complete mixability. If each distribution has finite mean, the center is obviously the sum of the means. In this paper, we investigate the set of centers of completely and jointly mixable distributions not having a finite mean. In addition to several results, we show the (possibly counterintuitive) fact that, for each $n \geq 2$, there exist $n$ standard Cauchy random variables adding up to a constant $C$ if and only if $$|C|\le\frac{n\,\log (n-1)}π.$$

A brief discussion on the chiral magnetic effect

The prerequisite of the chiral magnetic effect is the existence of net chiral charge in the quark gluon plasma (QGP). If we assume the quarks and anti-quarks contribute equally to the net chiral charge, the CME will induce a flow of the quark chemical potential and will cause the QGP having three distinct layers along the strong magnetic field characterised by distinctive compositions of quark chemical potentials. This phenomenon may bring new observable outcomes and help us test the existence of CME.

Distributed Optimal Vehicle Grid Integration Strategy with User Behavior Prediction

With the increasing of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in recent years, the impact of EV charging activities to the power grid becomes more and more significant. In this article, an optimal scheduling algorithm which combines smart EV charging and V2G gird service is developed to integrate EVs into power grid as distributed energy resources, with improved system cost performance. Specifically, an optimization problem is formulated and solved at each EV charging station according to control signal from aggregated control center and user charging behavior prediction by mean estimation and linear regression. The control center collects distributed optimization results and updates the control signal, periodically. The iteration continues until it converges to optimal scheduling. Experimental result shows this algorithm helps fill the valley and shave the peak in electric load profiles within a microgrid, while the energy demand of individual driver can be satisfied.

Evidence for interacting dark energy from BOSS

The result presented by the BOSS-SDSS Collaboration measuring the baryon acoustic oscillations of the Lyman-$α$ forest from high-redshift quasars indicates a $2.5σ$ departure from the standard $Λ$-cold-dark-matter model. This is the first time that the evolution of dark energy at high redshifts has been measured, and the current results cannot be explained by simple generalizations of the cosmological constant. We show here that a simple phenomenological interaction in the dark sector provides a good explanation for this deviation, naturally accommodating the Hubble parameter obtained by BOSS, $H(z=2.34)=222 \pm 7 ~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}~Mpc^{-1}}$. By performing a global fit of the parameters with the inclusion of this new data set together with the Planck data for the interacting model, we are able to show that some interacting models have constraints for $H(2.34)$ and $D_\mathrm{A}(2.34)$ that are compatible with the ones obtained by the BOSS Collaboration, showing a better concordance than $Λ$CDM. We also show that the interacting models that have a small positive coupling constant, which helps alleviate the coincidence problem, are compatible with the cosmological observations. Adding the likelihood of these new baryon acoustic oscillations data shows an improvement in the global fit, although it is not statistically significant. The coupling constant could not be fully constrained by the data sets used, but the dark energy equation of state shows a slight preference for a value different from a cosmological constant.

Photoinduced valley-polarized current of layered MoS2 by electric tuning

A photoinduced current of a layered MoS2-based transistor is studied from first-principles. Under the illumination of circular polarized light, a valley-polarized current is generated, which can be tuned by the gate voltage. For monolayer MoS2, the valley-polarized spin-up (down) electron current at K (K') points is induced by the right (left) circular polarized light. The valley polarization is found to reach +1.0 (-1.0) for the valley current that carried such a K (K') index. For bilayer MoS2, the spin-up (down) current can be induced at both K and K' valleys by the right (left) circular light. In contrast to monolayer MoS2, the photoinduced valley polarization shows asymmetric behavior upon reversal of the gate voltage. Our results show that the valley polarization of the photoinduced current can be modulated by the circular polarized light and the gate voltage. All the results can be well understood using a simple kp model.

Constraints on interacting dark energy models from Planck 2015 and redshift-space distortion data

We investigate phenomenological interactions between dark matter and dark energy and constrain these models by employing the most recent cosmological data including the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies from Planck 2015, Type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, the Hubble constant and redshift-space distortions. We find that the interaction in the dark sector parameterized as an energy transfer from dark matter to dark energy is strongly suppressed by the whole updated cosmological data. On the other hand, an interaction between dark sectors with the energy flow from dark energy to dark matter is proved in better agreement with the available cosmological observations. This coupling between dark sectors is needed to alleviate the coincidence problem.

Transmission spectra and valley processing of graphene and carbon nanotube superlattices with inter-valley coupling

We numerically investigate the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with inter-valley coupling, e.g., in \sqrt{3}N \times \sqrt{3}N and 3N \times 3N superlattices. By taking the \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} graphene superlattice as an example, we show that tailoring the bulk graphene superlattice results in rich structural configurations of nanoribbons and nanotubes. After studying the electronic characteristics of the corresponding armchair and zigzag nanoribbon geometries, we find that the linear bands of carbon nanotubes can lead to the Klein tunnelling-like phenomenon, i.e., electrons propagate along tubes without backscattering even in the presence of a barrier. Due to the coupling between K and K' valleys of pristine graphene by \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} supercells,we propose a valley-field-effect transistor based on the armchair carbon nanotube, where the valley polarization of the current can be tuned by applying a gate voltage or varying the length of the armchair carbon nanotubes.

Dynamical probe of thermodynamical properties in three-dimensional hairy AdS black holes

We study separatively the quasinormal modes (QNM) of electromagnetic perturbations around three-dimensional anti-de Sitter(AdS) black holes in Jordan and Einstein frames, which are related by the conformal transformations and a redefinition of a scalar field. We find that, in the Jordan frame, the imaginary parts of QNM frequencies can reflect the thermodynamical stabilities of hairy black holes, including the possible phase transition between the hairy black hole and BTZ black hole, disclosed by examining the corresponding free energies. Similar results are also uncovered in the Einstein frame. The obtained results further support that the QNM can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic properties in black holes.

Optimal Operation of Stationary and Mobile Batteries in Distribution Grids

The trending integrations of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS, stationary battery) and Electric Vehicles (EV, mobile battery) to distribution grids call for advanced Demand Side Management (DSM) technique that addresses the scalability concerns of the system and stochastic availabilities of EVs. Towards this goal, a stochastic DSM is proposed to capture the uncertainties in EVs. Numerical approximation is then used to make the problem tractable. To accelerate the computational speed, the proposed DSM is tightly relaxed to a convex form using second-order cone programming. Furthermore, in light of the continuous increasing problem size, a distributed method with a guaranteed convergence is applied to shift the centralized computational burden to distributed controllers. To verify the proposed DSM, real-life EV data collected on UCLA campus is used to test the proposed DSM in an IEEE benchmark test system. Numerical results demonstrate the correctness and merits of the proposed approach.

A mesoscopic approach on stability and phase transition between different traffic flow states

It is understood that congestion in traffic can be interpreted in terms of the instability of the equation of dynamic motion. The evolution of a traffic system from an unstable or metastable state to a globally stable state bears a strong resemblance to the phase transition in thermodynamics. In this work, we explore the underlying physics of the traffic system, by examining closely the physical properties and mathematical constraints of the phase transitions therein. By using a mesoscopic approach, one entitles the catastrophe model the same physical content as in the Landau's theory, and uncovers its close connections to the instability of the equation of motion and to the transition between different traffic states. In addition to the one-dimensional configuration space, we generalize our discussions to the higher-dimensional case, where the observed temporal oscillation in traffic flow data is attributed to the curl of a vector field. We exhibit that our model can reproduce the main features of the observed fundamental diagram including the inverse-$λ$ shape and the wide scattering of congested traffic data. When properly parameterized, the main feature of the data can be reproduced reasonably well either in terms of the oscillating congested traffic or in terms of the synchronized flow.

Nonlinear Modal Decoupling of Multi-Oscillator Systems with Applications to Power Systems

Many natural and manmade dynamical systems that are modeled as large nonlinear multi-oscillator systems like power systems are hard to analyze. For such a system, we propose a nonlinear modal decoupling (NMD) approach inversely constructing as many decoupled nonlinear oscillators as the system oscillation modes so that individual decoupled oscillators can easily be analyzed to infer dynamics and stability of the original system. The NMD follows a similar idea to the normal form except that we eliminate inter-modal terms but allow intra-modal terms of desired nonlinearities in decoupled systems, so decoupled systems can flexibly be shaped into desired forms of nonlinear oscillators. The NMD is then applied to power systems towards two types of nonlinear oscillators, i.e. the single-machine-infinite-bus (SMIB) systems and a proposed non-SMIB oscillator. Numerical studies on a 3-machine 9-bus system and New England 10-machine 39-bus system show that (i) decoupled oscillators keep a majority of the original system modal nonlinearities and the NMD provides a bigger validity region than the normal form, and (ii) decoupled non-SMIB oscillators may keep more authentic dynamics of the original system than decoupled SMIB systems.

Emulated Inertia and Damping of Converter-Interfaced Power Source

Converter-interfaced power sources (CIPSs), like wind turbine and energy storage, can be switched to the inertia emulation mode when the detected frequency deviation exceeds a pre-designed threshold, i.e. dead band, to support the frequency response of a power grid. This letter proposes an approach to derive the emulated inertia and damping from a CIPS based on the linearized model of the CIPS and the power grid, where the grid is represented by an equivalent single machine. The emulated inertia and damping can be explicitly expressed in time and turn out to be time-dependent.

Analytic study of the effect of dark energy-dark matter interaction on the growth of structures

Large-scale structure has been shown as a promising cosmic probe for distinguishing and constraining dark energy models. Using the growth index parametrization, we obtain an analytic formula for the growth rate of structures in a coupled dark energy model in which the exchange of energy-momentum is proportional to the dark energy density. We find that the evolution of $f σ_8$ can be determined analytically once we know the coupling, the dark energy equation of state, the present value of the dark energy density parameter and the current mean amplitude of dark matter fluctuations. After correcting the growth function for the correspondence with the velocity field through the continuity equation in the interacting model, we use our analytic result to compare the model's predictions with large-scale structure observations.

Gravitational collapse of massless scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity

We study the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar matter field in asymptotic flat spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity. In the Einstein frame of $f(R)$ gravity, an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. We find that besides the usual competition between gravitational energy and kinetic energy in the process of gravitational collapse, the new scalar field brought by the conformal transformation adds one more competing force in the dynamical system. The dynamical competition can be controlled by tuning the amplitudes of the initial perturbations of the new scalar field and the matter field. To understand the physical reasons behind these phenomena, we analyze the gravitational potential behavior and calculate the Ricci scalar at center with the change of initial amplitudes of perturbations. We find rich physics on the formation of black holes through gravitational collapse in $f(R)$ gravity.

Spin blockade as a probe of Zeeman interactions in hole quantum dots

Spin-orbit coupling is key to all-electrical control of quantum-dot spin qubits, and is frequently stronger for holes than for electrons. Here we investigate Pauli spin blockade for two heavy holes in a gated double quantum dot in an in-plane magnetic field. The interplay of the complex Zeeman and spin-orbit couplings causes a blockade leakage current anisotropic in the field direction. The period of the anisotropic leakage is critically dependent on the relative magnitude of Zeeman interaction terms linear and cubic in the magnetic field. The current and singlet-triplet exchange splitting can be effectively adjusted by an appropriate choice of field direction, providing a simple control variable for quantum information processing and a way of tailoring magnetic interactions in hole spin qubits.

Visualization of defect-induced excitonic properties of the edges and grain boundaries in synthesized monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are attractive materials for next generation nanoscale optoelectronic applications. Understanding nanoscale optical behavior of the edges and grain boundaries of synthetically grown TMDCs is vital for optimizing their optoelectronic properties. Elucidating the nanoscale optical properties of 2D materials through far-field optical microscopy requires a diffraction-limited optical beam diameter sub-micron in size. Here we present our experimental work on spatial photoluminescence (PL) scanning of large size ( $\geq 50$ microns) monolayer MoS$_2$ grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a diffraction limited blue laser beam spot (wavelength 405 nm) with a beam diameter as small as 200 nm allowing us to probe nanoscale excitonic phenomena which was not observed before. We have found several important features: (i) there exists a sub-micron width strip ($\sim 500$ nm) along the edges that fluoresces $\sim 1000 \%$ brighter than the region far inside; (ii) there is another brighter wide region consisting of parallel fluorescing lines ending at the corners of the zig-zag peripheral edges; (iii) there is a giant blue shifted A-excitonic peak, as large as $\sim 120$ meV, in the PL spectra from the edges. Using density functional theory calculations, we attribute this giant blue shift to the adsorption of oxygen dimers at the edges, which reduces the excitonic binding energy. Our results not only shed light on defect-induced excitonic properties, but also offer an attractive route to tailor optical properties at the TMDC edges through defect engineering.

Efficient implementation of RKN-type Fourier collocation methods for second-order differential equations

In this paper we discuss the efficient implementation of RKN-type Fourier collocation methods, which are used when solving second-order differential equations. The proposed implementation relies on an alternative formulation of the methods and the blended formulation. The features and effectiveness of the implementation are confirmed by the performance of the methods on two numerical tests.
